Review: Chicagoan soul man Lou Pride's 1972 debut, "I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un", has long been sought after by collectors. With original copies fiendishly difficult to find, this new pressing - the latest in a long line of occasional reissues of the Northern Soul style favourite - is a boon for all those who have long wanted a piece of the action. Pride's heartfelt vocal delivery is superb, while the backing track - heavy bass, stomping drums and razor sharp horns - is an absolute beast. For those wanting to revel in its driving goodness, you'll find a contemporary instrumental cover from Southside Wind Symphony on the B-side. This replaces Pride's vocal with some killer piano and organ solos, and is almost better than his original.

  4. Obsolete Music Technology - "Comb Freq" (7:12)
Review: With its festival, International Series, DJ Directory and Soundsystem: Dimensions has become a leading name in the underground. In only a mere six years of existence thus far, that's quite impressive we must say! Now, they extend their influence with the start of a new label: Dimensions Recordings. It launches with a 12 track compilation across three separate discs. Where the first disc delved into the exotic and explored world music and soulful vibes, this edition features some cutting edge electronics from legends and new heroes of the scene alike. Electro heroes London Modular Alliance appear with their best impression of purist Detroit electro on "Crosstalk" while the A side also features the glacial dub techno tones of Upwellings' "Soft Shadows". On the flip, Fachwerk boss Mike Dehnert gives us the very Robert Hood sounding "Tokio"and Windy City legend Steven Tang aka Obsolete Music Technology appears with something harder than you'd usually expect from the man: on the gnarly analogue techno of "Comb Freq".

Review: Lucerne based Prasens Editionen was founded in 2011 to give home to Zweikommasieben Magazin. Ever since, a bunch of magazines, books, zines, records, tapes and oddities have been published. After digging deep into their vast archive, they found two gems that are particularly striking: a live recording from a collaborative project (on Side A) in the form of the the textural industrial/noise journey by Nilbog entitled "Liverecording 02/11/16". On the flip Mr Pena's "TMC" (The Markt Chronicles) is a three minute gabba onslught. Mr. Pena lets loose, aiming at hardcore dancefloors while balancing between fight-or-flight terror and pacifying joy. Edition of 300.

  2. Subway Beat (Kenny Dope edit) (3:07)
Review: Back in 2014, Kenny Dope's Kay-Dee label released a sumptuous 7" box set featuring killer re-edits of the breakbeats and groove tracks that were originally recorded for Charlie Ahearn's pioneering 1983 hip-hop movie Wild Style. Since that box now goes for serious money online, the Masters at Work producer has decided to reissue two of the set's most potent rework. On the A-side you'll find his version of Fab 5 Freddy's "Down By Law", where impressively deep and woozy synths ride a low-slung post-punk bassline and punchy funk break. On the flip, the Dope one serves up a DJ-friendly extension of Grand Wizzard Theodore's "Subway Beat", where woozy Moog lines wrap themselves around a snappy drum machine beat and rubbery slap bassline.

Review: What type of collabo-devilry is this? DLR and Hybris are two of the most respected technicians, mix engineers and sound designers of our time. Combining science with funk on every release as individuals, it's no surprise their collaboration EP is no exception... "Every Day Is A New Tomorrow" comes on strong with a creepy classic molten steel tech groove that spaces out like an acid casualty on the breakdown before necksnapping you into oblivion. Elsewhere both parties provide solo heat in the form of the fast-lane racer "Panoramic View" and the hurricane stepper "Lately". Fierce enough to make the devil blush.

  4. DJ Aakmael - "Transit" (5:58)
Review: Given that Croatia's Dimensions Festival is one of the most consistently on-point electronic music events around, it figures that their new off-shoot label should regularly hit the spot, too. Certainly, the early signs are good. This second sampler single impresses from start to finish. Occasional L.I.E.S artist Marcos Cabral kicks things off with a fine chunk of fluid, underwater deep house ("Prochainement"), before Byron The Aquarius reaches for the talkbox on the sumptuously deep, soulful, jazz-funk influenced house bliss of "Full Moon". Lady Blaktronika gets things going on side B with the groovy, late night Detroit deep house bump of "Can We Still Be Friends". Arguably best of all, though, is the dreamy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth of DJ Akmael's "Transit".

As the label best describe themselves "An Introduction Part 1 calls upon artists from different corners of the globe who share the similarity of undeniable soul and expression in their music." From the Swahili sung harmonies on Mim Suleiman's lo-slung boogie down groove "Pole Pole", to the afro influences of Swiss collective Alma Negra's "Onga" whose spiritual life music reaches near tribal moments. On the flip, there's Istanbul's Kerem Akdag with "Getdownsoclose" a soulful jazzy and downright dusty deep house groove. Maryland's James Tillman's soulful vocals on "Wander" rounds off Part 1 with a dose of the soul.

Review: Fresh from charming the pants off us with the verdant Echoes From The Southern Place 12", Italian producer Piero Paolinelli is back as Sofa Talk with a new single striding out on the ever fantastic Tusk Wax. This 12" comes steeped in different shades of party music, from the bouncy organ chords and Motor City leads of "Disquiet" through to the slickly diced up boogie tones of "Elastic". As well as Paolinelli's mighty fine originals, the remixes come from some big hitters. AD Bourke gets on board to turn "Disquiet" into a energised, bubbling house burner while Posthuman brings some of his trademark tough acid touches to Elastic".

Review: The TK Disco reissue series continues with a fine EP of classic cuts from label stalwart Timmy Thomas. This time round, the singer and keyboardist's most famous outing, the fuzzy and impassioned organ jam "Why Can't We Live Together", is relegated to the B-side, with 1977 cut "Africano" taking pride of place on the A. It's something of an overlooked gem, all told; a killer chunk of Clav-happy Afro-funk/Afro-disco fusion full of chanted vocals and Thomas's own killer electric piano flourishes. Also featured on side B is "Funky Me", which was originally featured on the B-side of "Why Can't We Live Together". Equally fuzzy and underpinned by the same sort of clicking drum machine percussion, it naturally features Thomas showing off his impeccable organ skills.

Review: Frankfurt deep house producer Sascha Dive released his second album Dark Shadow in 2014. The German producer released the record through his own Deep Vibes Recordings label and it arrived three years on from his first album, Restless Nights. Funnily enough: three year's on from its release it only now gets a bunch of remixes: but they are certainly worth the wait. A fellow local tech house legend appears first: "SQ8" receives the Reboot Chainsaw rework and it is particularly epic by fusing Latin rhythms, sleek tech house aesthetics and trippy techno elements. On the flip, another esteemed hero of the German underground in the form of Tobi Neumann appears: his energetic remix of "Thunderstorm" has the sound of Sunday morning up at Panorama Bar in mind. Finally, staying in line with the label's usual sound is the deep, dubby and emotive tones of "Inner Circle" (Hooved dub remix) ending out this great remix collection in style.

Review: Coming straight out of Austin, Texas with the party squarely in their sights, the Whiskey Pickle crew have spent a fair while building up their repertoire before leaping to vinyl last year. P Sol mark the third wax offering from this crew, and the chopped up disco house of "Water" makes for a sterling way to draw you in to this four track EP. "Don't Wanna Be" is a low slung, sleazy groover with plenty of filtered guitar licks and weighty bass, "Moods" takes things in a smoother downtempo direction and "Your Dance" pitches somewhere in the middle with a divine slice of soul jazz re-edited for the dancefloor.

Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

"Part 1" is a wonderful opening gambit powered by lightly pattering percussion, while "Part 7" enlists the help of Nick Ossia to float off into the swirliest of liquid synth baths. Ossia is also on hand to help with the more abstract sonic shapes of "Part 5", while "Part 3" provides a wonderfully energised, drum-rich ending to a truly standout EP.

Review: Defected's disco-minded Glitterbox offshoot has decided to dip a toe into the choppy waters (sorry) of the re-edit scene. The man at the control is fun-time rework specialist Dr Packer, an Australian scalpel specialist who has spent the last few years contributing tidy edits to a variety of well-regarded labels. First, he adds a little late '80s house shuffle to a soul-fired, boogie-era disco classic, before turning the equally familiar "Still in Love" into a bouncy, club-ready chunk of disco-house full of swirling strings and Chic-style guitars. On the flip the good doctor gets his hands a much-sampled electrofunk workout, retaining the drum delays while adding a touch of nu-disco swagger, before brilliantly dubbing out and tooling up the synth-heavy swagger of 1985 hit "I'll Be Good".

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues to march ahead with further musings on the mysterious creative realm between deep house and techno, which is a natural home for Tomoki Tamura. The Holic Trax boss man steps up with the solid four track Quiet Air Gun EP, and from the get go the quality is unmistakable. "Quiet Air Gun" is an alluring yet undeniably strange jam, with vocals from Moo only adding to the eerie, sensual tension. "Foggy Jungle" is more upfront with its tough beats n' bass exoskeleton, but between that scuffed combo there's ample room for subtle atmospheric touches as well. "DSC House" then brings the real peak time heat with its smoking samples and heavyweight rhythm section, but there's time for one more trip out with the sublime "Stars In The Morning".

Review: TK Disco flashbacks are always welcome at Juno HQ: Here we find some of the label's later cuts in the form two 1980s jams: Wizzdom's 1980 bass-slapping, face-shaking boogie jam "Free Bass" and the funkier, more disco-aligned (and brilliantly titled) "Is It In". Completing the release is Herman Kelly & Life's "A Refreshing Love". Not originally released on TK, it landed on Electric Cat in 1978, but it provides sweet closure and context. Stripping back the groove and energy, it's a sublime sunny side soul piece that's still played heavily by DJs such as Scrimshire, Ash Walker and Andrew Ashong. Beautiful.

Lapien's remix of "Lights Go Out" is the perfect starting point for this EP, riding on thrumming acid bass and haunting pads with a rock solid beat thundering away in the middle. "#dub4 (Tape Mix)" meanwhile ploughs a much deeper furrow into, as you might well have guessed, dub techno, but that's just a foil for the powerful thrust of the original version of "Lights Go Out" which spreads itself across the whole B-side.

With this release on the esteemed R&S, we wonder if this will bring a wider recognition of the niche sound in the electronic music community? Real name Iulian Cuculea, he helms the eponymous imprint which, although mainly devoted to his own works, has also released tracks by emerging Italian talent Christopher Ledger and local legend Sepp of UVAR Records. On "Palatul De Clestar" he serves up more of his trademark grooves: all rolling, cavernous and esoteric. Merging Romanian folk music aesthetics effectively with surreal field recordings and modular blips and bleeps over its eight minute duration. "Devotare" works with more subtle elements to create a dreamy and hypnotic vibe, assisted by exotic percussion, woozy pads and syncopated metallic textures for added trance induction. There's some great remixes: All Inn Records boss Laurine Frost's version remains in the same realm, but Bucharest homeboy Cosmin TRG makes a surprising appearance too. He gives the track a Berghain style techno makeover.

  2. On The Scene
  3. Freaksta
  4. Right Now
Review: The Difusion crew turned some heads last year with the low-key release of their first grip of cult edits, and now they're back with a second installment that keeps the source material obscure, the treatment respectful and the vibes pure and positive. "Someday" is a killer simmering slice of disco funk, while "On The Scene" slows things down and turns up the 70s bombast with Philly strings and brass blasts aplenty. "Freaksta" takes things in a more cosmic direction, while "Right Now" aims right for Studio 54 indebted flamboyance, all stirring diva vocals and bold production to get everyone freaking the right way.

Review: "Travelling" was the single that really put Quentin Harris on the map, receiving support from the likes of Louie Vega, Timmy Regisford, Danny Krivit, Kenny Dope, Joe Claussell, Frankie Feliciano and Kerri Chandler to name just a few. It also won song of the year at the 2005 4th Annual Choice Awards in New York. "Travelling" has been out of press for nearly a year now so this is your chance to stock up on it once more.

  2. Madar Komakam Kon (3:40)
Review: A project by two Iranian brothers based in Brooklyn and Tehran, Saint Abdullah create sounds largely inspired by the religious, political, and cultural history of Iran. With The Sounds of Evil, the duo revisit the roots of their childhood in war-torn, post-Islamic revolution Iran. These are family stories of martyrdom, loss and war tragedies all pieced together through aggressive sound collage, cultural sample archeology and rhythmic structure. On the A side, the beautifully haunting repetition of "Madar Komakam Kon" will hypnotise you into submission while the bass heavy B side cut utilises charming vocal hymns and layers of exotic percussion. Formed out of a deep frustration of Western perceptions of the Islamic faith, they hope that through their music they can build compassion around issues surrounding race, religion & culture.
