I Thought You Wanted To Dance (full length Midtown mix) (7:32)
Call Me (3:00)
I Thought You Wanted To Dance (3:32)
Review: The first ever Athens of the North 12" is a real pearler, presenting the unreleased full length mix of Symbol 8's classic disco burner "I Thought You Wanted To Dance." The track was originally pressed on 7" back in 1978, split down the middle with one part on each side, but it's a track that was made for the full 12" format and is done so here on a Full Midtown Mix. Charlie Adams versatile vocal flipping into falsetto with ease while the band holds the solid groove is a special thing. On the flip-side is a Shock Version of "I Thought You Wanted To Dance," which surfaced later and sounds very different, sitting pretty alongside a personal DJ Fryer favourite "Call Me". Essential as always.

Pedre Son Eclat (6:20)
You Feel It (5:55)
Pedre Son Eclat (Man Power remix) (6:57)
Tears (5:21)
Review: Ron & Neil is an all-star collaboration between old buddies Jim "Ron Basejam" Baron (Crazy P), and Rack 'N' Ruin boss man Neil Diablo. Pedre Son Aclat marks the project's first appearance, with the three original tracks sitting somewhere between shimmering nu-disco, sparkling powder house, and disco-influenced grooves. The title track sets the tone, layering up colourful synthesizer chords and melodies. While tasty, Man Power's bubbly, Balearic style revision - all analogue synths, cheap drum machine hits and sleazy vocals - is arguably more satisfying. "You Feel It" is a creepy, low-slung deep house/disco hybrid blessed with killer percussive flourishes and a weighty punk funk bassline, while "Tears" is a glassy-eyed fusion of warehouse-friendly electronics and disco-funk hedonism.

Black Magic
Black Magic (Mascaras remix)
Review: From the label: Jakarta based Jonathan Kusuma delivers a new EP on Cocktail d'Amore Music. After his European debut on Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliche, followed by a successful EP on Berlin's imprint Love On The Rocks, the Indonesian artist keeps carrying the vessel of the Far East sound. The title track Black Magic is a fat disco-tribal inspired groove that builds fast, eventually climaxing with a cloud of acid synths and mystical vocals. Japanese duo Mascaras, Chida and Cos/Mes' 5ive, straighten up the groove giving a 4/4 beats restyling. The result is a Proto-Techno, Trance influenced soundscape, for foggy late-night dancefloors. Urban Sorcery is an Italo inspired maze of proto-acid synthesizers, sounding like an enchanted concrete-covered forest. 90's house inspired Redvox is an experiment of cosmic influences. As the vocal becomes part of the groove, the long pads fuel this spaceship pushing it to the borders of time and space.

International Track
International Track (Max Essa remix)
Review: "Lizards are Lee Forster (1/3 Last Waltz) and James Hadfield (the mainstay of the Elizabeth Collective). Taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, Anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. It's one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable. International Track lives up to it's name, seeing the North Eastern English producers channel the Japanese take on the Balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as CosMes. Ironically, with his remix, Japanese based Max Essa lends a Euro Pop lilt to the track, softening the beats and adding delicate 80s digital melodies."

Can't Give It Up (original mix) (6:11)
Can't Give It Up (instrumental mix) (6:12)
Can't Give It Up (Dicky Trisco mix) (10:34)
Review: Longstanding party partners in crime, New York's JKriv and The Disco Machine team up once again for another late night hip-shake session. Adeline Michele shouldn't be a stranger to you, too... She's worked with JKriv before on "Another Night" five years ago. The rasping Nightmoves electro feel to the synths is complemented by Kriv's own live bass while Adeline delicately purrs in the groove's well-placed spaces. Version-wise, the instrumental lets you hear all the little details while Dicky Trisco's take just plain knocks your head off with its obscenely overweight kicks. Impossible to give up.

Son Of The Sun (4:21)
Jungle Melody (5:49)
Fool Like A Child (5:59)
Review: Moscow's Arsenii is up next on New York City edits imprint Razor N Tape. Following up the great Allegria on Basic Fingers last year, he's back with some more obscure oddities spliced to perfection once again. He takes the razor to "Son of the Sun," which the label themselves describe as "the Shaft-in-outer-space drama" (and we agree completely) to the 'proto-balearic lilt' of "Jungle Melody" by Pierre Dalmon and of course the big band funk of "Fool Like A Child"; more commonly known to some as Christian Gaubert's "Sweet And Fool Like A Child" from 1979.

Mango Moon (Dicky Trisco mix) (11:18)
Review: Big Terje vibes on this instant summer smackdown of a track. Sprightly synths, dubby chugs, a lolloping live bassline and confident guitar washes on the final climax. If this doesn't have your crowd grinning like lunatics then there's something critically wrong. Dicky Trisco adds even more euphoria to the fire with a piano line so strong you could be convinced it's 1990 and we're in Italy. Heavenly.

Review: Stone cold disco boogie classic from 1981 with arguably the finest slap bass solo Sam Records ever pressed to wax gets the five star treatment from premier league editor Kon. Arresting our attention in all the right places on both the clean cut edit and the dubbier "Caserta Can Have It" version, once again Kon reminds us of his matchless craft. Also included are the original 12", instrumental and acapella. What a package... This beat is yours.

Dra Te Haelvete (Todd Terje disco dub) (5:35)
Dra Te Haelvete (Prins Thomas remix) (6:18)
Dra Te Haelvete (Todd Terje acid remix) (5:11)
Review: Comedian Espen Beranek Holm might seem like an unlikely Norwegian disco pioneer, but his 1981 single "Dra Te Haelvete" - a sweary, guitar-laden Italo-disco chugger about a man's efforts to get high - has long been a favourite of adventurous Norse DJs. Here, Todd Terje's Olsen Records has decided to give it a re-release, with the man himself providing a trio of reworks. There's a delay-laden, radio-friendly Edit, a strutting, stripped-back Disco Dub, and a thrillingly alien and out-there Acid Mix (which, typically, also features a Clavinet breakdown). This 12" also includes a dubby, punk funk flavoured interpretation from Prins Thomas.

Review: Yes, yes, yes! People's Potential Unlimited come through with a timely new white label edition of Minority Band's Tasty Tune 12" which was one of the very first releases from the DC archivalists back in 2009!! Both tracks on this 12" originate from the sole record Jersey Shore act Minority Band released at the time they were active, the Journey To The Shore LP issued on local New Jersey label JSR Records back in 1980. It goes without saying finding that LP is akin to stumbling upon gold dust, so let's make do with this 12" which PPU state features two of the best cuts. Prime Jersey Shore boogie.

Sleazy McQueen - "The Wrong Virrey" (7:11)
Dicky Trisco - "And The Groove Goes On & On" (6:53)
Labor Of Love - "After Dark" (6:16)
Review: Is there room in the realm of vinyl only disco edits labels for another operation? Labor Of Love certainly proved there was with the inaugural bout of edits that dropped on their much loved debut 12" earlier this year. Whereas the scalpel artists on that 12" remained uncredited, Labor Of Love reveal all on this second transmission with edit regulars Sleazy McQueen and Dicky Trisco joining the fray alongside the label owners themselves. It's the drunken disco styles of Whiskey Disco man Sleazy McQueen that kicks things off on horn-laden, dubbed out groover "The Wrong Virrey" which is a solid A-side dancefloor pleaser. Down below, "And The Groove Goes On & On" finds old Dicky operating at more of a funked out slo-mo pace, whilst Labor of Love's "After Dark" is reminiscent of early Mark E and features some resplendent disco string arrangements.

BT Express - "Peace Pipe" (DJ Nori edit) (5:26)
Review: Taken from original Paradise Garage resident DJ Nori's Take The N Train mix CD, Octave deliver two rarities on one 45" for the discerning selectors. Maryann Farra & Satin Soul's hooky disco soul stomper from 1976 is displayed in all its original illustriously orchestrated glory while Nori provides floor-firing edit of BT Express's equally hooky, equally sweaty, equally epic "Peace Pipe". Both guaranteed to fire up the most jaded of floors, don't sleep on this one.

Fernandez (5:30)
Fernandez (Red Axes remix) (8:56)
Review: Disco Halal overseer Moscoman has built up a solid clutch of 12" releases away from his own label these past few years with appearances on ESP Institute and I'm A Cliche and these have been complemented by the odd compilation outing too. One of the more memorable of these was "Fernandez" which originally appeared on the orange edition of Eskimo's colour-coded compilation series last year and now gets a timely physical release in 12" format. Excitingly, the Belgian powerhouse have called on Moscoman's celebrated and endlessly prolific compatriots Red Axes to remix the track. In the Tel Aviv duo's hands, "Fernandez" is subtly stripped of some of its drum machine bombast with that trademark Red Axes psychedelia added in its place. A great club 12".

Sunburn (4:59)
Review: More superlative digging action from Chicago's Nimble and Albumz. "Tsunami" certainly does whip up a storm with its insistent kickdrum thrust and dense layers of keys, guitar, flutes and strings. Sitting somewhere between LA and Wigan, it will please northern soul and straight up funk fans. "Sunburn" lives up to its name, too. A sizzling Afrofunk scorcher with blisteringly tight horns, soft vocals and just a mild disco edge, it's the sound of Lagos mid 70s with a subtle touch of modern editing muscle. Party on.

Recollection Echo is an album of previously unreleased cuts from the jazz funk icon which was originally trailed last year by a blinding 12" on Rush Hour and then released only in Japan through Shout Records on CD. It now appears on the format disco and soul selectors everywhere have been craving and boy does it sound good. Funked up from the off, there are some delicious moog touches to "The Love Song" whilst the laidback soulful cuts like "Space Walking" and "I've Got Your Love" are truly complemented by the moments where Mason embraces the dancefloor - "Cool Out" and "Up Jump" being highlights of this.

Say Yea (3:49)
Review: Last spotted on AOTN in November 2015, DJ Fryer addresses the final two nuggets in Billy T'Spoon Bruner's short-but-perfectly formed with the final collection of tracks from Billy's own Oil Capital imprint. "If You Dance Tonight" is unashamed boogie fusion with fun lyrics and a slap bass line so rude it will make you blush. "Say Yea" is a classic 80s ballad delivered with Lionel levels of smoothness. A proper end-of-night, grab-your-coat gem. Limited to 500 copies, no represses.

Review: Following BBE's release the Chicago troupe's Devil Made Me Do It earlier this year, Athens Of The North ensure the criminally over-looked/under-paid band continue to remain in the spotlight with an entire album of unreleased material. Recently excavated from a Chicago warehouse, complete with masters, the songs were written and recorded in the mid '70s not long before the band eventually split. If you know their material, you'll already know how funky the band are. If not, dig deep at the soonest opportunity. From the toxic-levels of cosmic funk on "Boogie" to the dreamier, space ballad "Dark Moon", this is the sound of a super-tight, incredibly talented funk band who really should have been up there with Cymande or Average White Band.
