Today Is The Day (Hot mix) (3:17)
Today Is The Day (Shadow Hills mix) (3:19)
Review: Massive boogie joint from 1982, Frazelle's "Today Is The Day" packs the same punch it did 35 years ago; stomping beats, salubrious guitars, widescreen production and gutsy vocals from Ken Frazelle himself. Powerful in the lyrical, technical and party dynamics this is a huge dancefloor record... This reissue is long overdue. You know what to do.

The Likely Pink (8:56)
Unidentified Robot (5:17)
Megaeditofanedit (7:41)
Mental Tribe (3:34)
Review: Jonny Rock has been doing it for years, from landing on Music For Freaks and Playhouse in the 00s through to charming the likes of Futureboogie and Oye Edits just last year. His muscular synth sound is a perfect fit on Bahnsteig 23, dealing in an impeccable encapsulation of 80s production principles to make killer dancefloor tracks that transcend the ages. "Unidentified Robot" is a particularly fun and freaky jam, while the "Megaeditofanedit" turns up the schlock factor to a devastating degree. This is party music as slick as it is silly, making for an irresistible combination to get the party started.

Acid Whump (6:09)
Bostitch Time (8:33)
Review: Chicago batboy Jamie 3:26 is one of the few Windy City producers who is still waving his city's flag up high; alongside other house and techno artists like Hieroglyphic Being, they are defining the Chicago sound of today. This particular producer's style is suave and supremely sleek in its execution, a quality that is clearly audible from this second instalment of Basement Edits. The first, "Acid Whump" couldn't be from anywhere else and, although the UK also has a long tradition of heavy acid house, this particular tune sounds like it really is from the source of it all. "Bostitch Time", on the other hand, is more leftfield in all senses; there's a jazzy percussive beat pushing it forwards, but the track's sonic coating is filled with strange and wonderful synth sounds that render it something of a misnomer. Excellent cuts.

Back To Life (Scrimshire Waaait For It edit) (7:21)
African Dance (Scrimshire Afro-Trance edit) (7:17)
Review: Scrimshire's pedigree for edits last year was in a league of its own. Monthly dispatches designed to do nothing but tickle, tease and thrills dancefloors, each one of his edits took on lives of their own with heaps of additional musicianship and groovecraft. These two Soul II Soul edits say it all... "Back To Life" gets a powerful tease on the pay-off while "African Dance" gets brand new drums and a whole new boogie section. Damaging.

The Feeling Is Strong (7:36)
Long Time Dancing (7:34)
Review: The latest volume in Kolour LTD's popular ten-inch series comes from Dicky Trisco, a producer arguably better known for his impeccable scalpel jobs than his original productions. The two tracks here sit somewhere between the two, building tasty dancefloor tools out a swathe of samples and a handful of new musical elements. Rahaan style A-side "The Feeling Is Strong" peppers a rubbery, bass-heavy disco groove with jammed-out electric piano lines and razor-sharp guitars. On the flip, Trisco adds weighty new drums to a looped-up old disco/boogie fusion jam. So while the vocal-heavy samples scream disco, the alien synths and mutant funk electronics are closer to vintage electrofunk.

Vivian Reed - "Don't Start Something You Can't Finish" (GU Remaster) (5:57)
Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes - "A Chance For Peace" (GU Timestretch) (4:53)
Review: Chicago house badman Glenn Underground kicks off 2017 with a fiery trio of edits, written and packaged in his inimitable style. Coming straight through his own GU Classics imprint, the man gets down and dirty on his sleazy edit of "Gotta Get A High" by Made In The USA, packing a mean punch of boogie bass tones and lazy disco strings. The B-side gets down with a GU Remaster of Vivian Reed's "Don't Start Something You Can't Finish", while the GU Timestretch of "A Chance For Peace" by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes is a true burst of wonder and soul, magnetic as the original but just a little bit more dancefloor-prone. So ill...

Always (7:12)
Band Jive (4:57)
Brand New Lover (8:36)
Review: Having spent much of the last couple of years dropping original productions, Alkalino returns to his first love: the humble re-edit. Typically, Reworks Volume 1 is a varied affair, containing subtle revisions that tend towards scalpel re-arrangements rather than tooled-up remixes. He begins with "Always", a smooth and sun-kissed rearrangement of a dusty old reggae-soul number guaranteed to put smiles on faces. "Band Jive" is a largely instrumental re-edit of RInder & Lewis's druggy cover version of "Willie & The Hand Jive" - a track famously sampled by Padded Cell for their superb "Piccadilly Line Strut" some years back - while closer "Brand New Lover" offers a straightened-out rearrangement of a sparkling, Italo-disco classic.

Stop Your Lies (vocal) (6:13)
Stop Your Lies (instrumental) (6:23)
Review: Best Records' own luminary Claudio Casalini was at the helm for this one-shot studio project that captures Italo disco at its most exuberant and organic. Originally released in 1984, the bassline on "Stop Your Lies" is a quintessential slice of synthetic throb from a golden era, but the electronic elements are wonderfully offset by rich instrumentation and a brilliantly camp vocal performance from the unnamed boy-girl combo. The vocal mix on the A side is strong enough for a single-sided cut, but the instrumental on the flip widens out the reach of the record and really lets Casalini's superb production shine through.

Hey Benji (5:52)
Hey Benji (Prins Thomas remix) (10:10)
Review: Gop Tun are a Brazilian label and party crew operating out of Sao Paulo, and they stride into their third release with a pair of tracks that are likely to establish them on the map even more than they are already. This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

Tamiko Jones - "Can't Dub Without Your Love" (6:18)
Sharon Jones - "Tonight's Dub Night" (4:31)
Damon Harris - "It's Dub Music" (5:31)
Review: It's the fifth edition of Japan's Edit & Dub Recordings, and already we're feeling the love in the air. This wondrous little imprint is providing us with some truly fine beats recently and, whether it's disco or anything dub-related, they've got that sleek touch to kill. Tamiko Jones' wonderful disco sensation gets a re-lick and is renamed "Can't Dub Without Your Love", while Sharon Jones' own party-ready slinger is dubbed "Tonight's Dub Night". Last but not least, Damon Harris lights up the scene with the rolling, bubbling boogie bass of "It's Dub Music", a tune that has the potential to take you right back to '79...

Sondrio (5:02)
Review: Bahnsteig 23's productive run shows no signs of letting up as we round off 2016, with the label following up on Albion and Etbonz by turning to the considerable talents of Alexis Le-Tan under his Le-Fan guise. The Les Edits Du Golem regular turns up the heat on this wildly inventive record, touching on all kinds of styles in the process. "Swiss Cottage" is a slow swinging slice of new wave on a mission, while "Bruzzano" fires off samples in a mad cap Art Of Noise fashion. "Den Tempst" is a more bombastic kind of stomper, and then "Sondrio" veers off into moody soundtrack territory.

Sfire 2 (Timothy J Fairplay insturmental) (4:50)
Sfire 3 (Willie Burns remix 1) (5:35)
Sfire 3 (Willie Burns remix 2) (4:11)
Review: The pairing of Jeffrey Sfire with Samuel Long (aka PC Music producer Sophie) produced some discoid synth-pop manna for the CockTail d'Amore label when it first appeared back in 2013. Now the duo have been handed over to [Emotional] Especial, who have tasked two choice remixers with turning out some fresh versions of the tracks from the original EP. Timothy J. Fairplay keeps the wave dark and cold on his remix of "Sfire 2", using noirish synth lines to interplay with Sfire's on-point vocal. Meanwhile Willie Burns ramps up the atmospherics with some heavyweight pads on his first remix of "Sfire 3" before turning the original into a cheeky peak time burner for his second.

Another Day (6:45)
Eazy Breezy (6:49)
Review: Danny Worrall goes by the name of 80s Child, and it's kind of apt given his label's persistent use of disco-house thrills that have something subtly italo-leaning about them. The Masterworks Series is the third instalment, and it comes as a nice pre-xmas treat courtesy of the Masterworks Music imprint. Disco deviant The Silver Rider is on the case a two-part stunner: "Another Day" is a mid-tempo, house-not-house charmer that rolls its delightful groove over a bed of jazzy nuances and percussive muscle, whereas "Eazy Breezy" heads further down the house trail thanks to a dusty 4/4 rhythm, and a glorious succession of playful harmonic that are tailor-made for the opening sets.

Perfection (4:54)
Love In Motion (4:46)
Review: The good feelings continue... When Jay W McGee returned after almost 30 years in 2015 most assumed it would be a one-off special album but the silver fox's signature falsettos still have plenty of steam to go as we're treated to two sides of his soulful coin. "Perfection" is a fervent uptempo disco cut with stacks of energy while "Love In Motion" is much more smouldering and reflective (think Faze O) and reminds us of Jay's lower, sexier vocal range. Perfect.

Groove Of Midnight (James Rod re-edit) (6:24)
Review: In the autumn of 2016, Spanish buddies Rayko and James Rod released a trio of digital-only re-edit EPs under the title Classics of Arrikitaun. This EP gathers together four of the best-loved re-cuts from those download releases and presents them on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally much to admire, from the cosmic disco/nu-disco/psychedelic boogie fusion of Rayko's "Bamboo", and Rod's Love Unlimited Orchestra re-imagining "Groove of Midnight", to the subtly acid-flecked disco-rock strut of the same producer's "The Name of Love". Rayko's heavyweight Midnight Starr re-rub, "Headline", completes an excellent package.

Astrolook (7:41)
Space Future (8:03)
Review: Longstanding Adult Contemporary affiliate Chilean Dorado returns with two blissful exercises in cosmic disco. "Astrolook" is neatly restrained as we strut lightly into foggy cosmic synthetic atmospheres. Coming on strong like a Silver City jam 10 years ago, there's a subtle dubby charm to both the FX and live drums. "Space Funk", meanwhile, is sci-fi to its very core with its ricochet arpeggios and broadscreen synth textures. Loaded and coded with a sense of adventure and steeped in dubbed out disco FX, this will blow minds in any dance scenario.

Review: Dailysessions Monchan lets rip with a second volume in his "East Village Edits" series. Once again and it's a full spectrum adventure that will leave you puzzling over what to drop first. Will it be the lolloping bass and vibraphone jam that's "Groove Go Around" or the tightly plucked, siren-soaked percussive disco bubbler "All U Need"? Perhaps you'll go for the big string dynamite of "You Are My Superwoman" first? Or maybe, just maybe you'll freak out with the block-rocking b-boy jam "Wrecked Train Disco"? One thing is definite: this EP really is the bee's knees.

Syfilis (5:41)
Review: We know little of Ajvar Soundystem, but we always like an artist who comes through uninvited and accompanied by a new label. That's the way things should be. What we can say about Take Away 001 is that "Freak Hodja" is a glorious disco number with the perect balance of Arabic vocalism - a blend that is unfortunately not heard too often around these parts. "Roki" is faster, nuttier, and focusses more on the percussion elements, a zesty, freaky blend of drums and funked-out samples, while "Syfilis" is an absolute crowd-pleaser - a tune that you'll be singing along to without knowing a word or its meaning (unless you speak Arabic, of course).

Review: Clara and Armand are the two producers behind the new Agar Agar project, and the French duo clearly intend to take electropop back to its golden days... we have absolutely no problems with that. This is their first release, and it comes courtesy of the Cracki label, a Parisian collective formed in 2010 that has been putting out nothing but fire since its birth; moreover, the imprint has scouted a lot of new talent from the streets. We would dub this sort of music disco-not-disco, a slow and mellow blend of slo-mo dance moves that often verge towards the utterly abstract. Most importantly, these are tunes that will be enjoyed by indie fans, and they should certainly not be looked at as mere 'dance' tracks. There is plenty to explore in here, and Agar Agar will surely pop back up on our radars very soon. Recommended!
