Shadower
Sanctum
Review: Throwing Snow's latest effort heralds the start of the Sneaker Social Club imprint. Whispering to life on an ectoplasmic synth line, "Shadower" continues the producer's penchant for ghostly ambience, while the beats are positively direct and simple. The gently building melodies blossom into soaring chimes with the pastoral quality of early Four Tet. On the flip, "Sanctum" takes just as long to reveal its true colours, letting the melancholic vocal interplay ride out before an Irish-jig kind of cello signals the drop. Driven by a fulsome bass line and a lean 2-step shuffle, this could certainly get some rumps shaking in the right setting.

Maelstrom
Review: Following releases earlier this year on Mordant Music and Further Records, Ekoplekz returns with this intriguing release on Peverelist's Punch Drunk. Taking its cues more from 70s library music and the early radiophonic experimentation of Delia Derbyshire than it does from Bristol's bass scene, this collection of claustrophobic terrors nevertheless displays an undisputed debt to the sounds of contemporary dubstep, particularly on "Soviet Drum Brain Attack", where mangled samples are held together with a tolling bass. For the most part the mood is distinctly avant-garde, with highlights including "Rogue Circuits", which can only be described as the sound of a seasick dial-up modem shifting through a number of increasingly darkening moods, and "Devil Mixture" which is reminiscent of the sound of fearful analogue synthesisers trapped in a gathering storm. But it's final track "Maelstrom" where the influence of dance music is most obvious, as metallic tones brush against skittering snares in a track that isn't unlike a more pastoral approximation of Aphex Twin.

Full Throttle
Slow Down
Review: Rising French talent F aka Florent Aupetit continues to do good things via the 7even imprint, ably following his acclaimed Energy Distortion long player last year with Full Throttle, his debut release of 2011. The two tracks here see F swerve away from the canny mixture of techno and dubstep explored on his LP for a more defined 808 flex that sits comfortably alongside some of the more futuristic endeavours of the Swamp81 camp. The title track especially so, which the keener observers of internet movements will have heard in LWE and FACT mixes from 2562 and Bok Bok respectively. There are few rhythmic kinks in its bass heavy electro deviations, but it's a potent weapon all the same. The flip is more adventurous by far, a veritable downpour of intricately slipped percussion playing off the straight toms and scattergun kicks amidst a background of cascading sonics. Sickness!

Badness (feat Skream)
Trouble In The Streets (feat Mark Pritchard)
Review: Complementing the release of Biasonic Hotsauce: Birth of the Nanocloud , the new guest heavy album from UK bass innovator Zed Bias, Tru Thoughts lift two tracks to place either side of an impossibly pink illustrated picture disc. "Badness" is Bias' suitably titled collaboration with Croydon lynchpin Skream, cocking a snook at the preponderance of the all too polite productions that swamp the 'don't call it post dubstep' age with some vintage sub bass shudderations. Check the flip for the more percussive tropical rave flex of "Trouble In The Streets" which sees Bias ably assisted by the legend that is Mark Pritchard. Also included is a drop card with unique code to grab the downloads for these tracks, leaving little reason not to indulge.

Ultraviolet
Blue Monday
Review: The latest offering from the mighty Hemlock sees a new producer enter their stable: Toronto based Nautiluss, whose brooding take on garage provides a more than worthy addition to their catalogue. "Ultraviolet" is a collaboration between Bertie and former Simian and Black Ghosts vocalist Simon Lord under his Lord Skywave alias. As you'd expect from such a collaboration, it's undoubtedly one of the poppier things that Hemlock have released, as Lord's maudlin vocals float atop metronomic handclaps and symphonic pads not unlike something out of a 70s sci-fi soundtrack. Instrumental track "Bleu Monday" on the other hand is far more what you would expect from the label, as swampy bass sits underneath stuttering drums with definite garage leanings. It's nicely accented by a bright kwaito-style melody which rears up at the halfway point before the rhythm rolls into a cyclone at the end.

Aggy
Mangled Riddim
808 Vybzin
Skrilla
Review: Hyperdub reach out to Manchester for their next release, securing the illuminating debut release from young gun Walton, whose youth betrays no lack of understanding of both nascent sounds like UKF and grime as well as older, more established genres across the four tracks here. "Aggy" is what you might call a certified banger, splicing the raw nature of grime with the tight syncopations of UK Funky, but most importantly brandishing a murderous 8 bit bassline that snakes with intent around those killer drum hits. Alongside it "Mangled Riddim" is an aptly titled excursion into f*cked-up 808 land, a territory well mined in recent times though Walton's production skills ensure this is far from a mere pastiche of Swamp 81 sounds. Turn over for the slick, smooth and soaring "808 Vybzin" which has a nice mid 90s bounce to it, whilst "Skrilla" marries a killer nowaday flex with early 90s Sheffield sounds. Bigness!

Lions On The Beach
Bastion
Review: It's a testament to the success of R&S 2.0 that the imprint's release schedule can quite happily swerve between the heavy dancefloor artillery of Blawan and Lone and the more intricate and delicately layered musings of acts such as Cloud Boat. The work of Tom Clark, this two track debut 10" demonstrates his strengths as both a songwriter and crafter of bass laden swing. "Lions On The Beach" showcases the latter, with a clacking 2 step rhythm engulfed by flushed piano touches, foggy vocal swirls and the sort of bass that comes to life on the right system. Clark's vocal talent is much more apparent on the gently coaxing "Bastion", which subtly slips into a cavernous thump midway through. It's too easy to proclaim Cloud Boat the new pretender to the throne of Blake, though fans of the swept fringed one will find much to like here.

Goodbye Girl (Kuedo remix)
Earth A Killa Ya (Mala remix)
Review: With his own album twitching at the gates, Kuedo brings his synth-laden delirium to King Midas Sound's "Goodbye Girl". He starts proceedings on a tart melodic line underpinned by some monolithic bass tones. The mournful quality of the original wafts through, acting as just the right counterbalance to Kuedo's day-glo styles. Mala opts for a bleak, dread fuelled take on "Earth A Kill Ya". A menacing, drawn out intro peppered with ghostly tones kicks into gear with a minimum of fuss over a persistent sub stab. If you appreciate music written to conjure up demons then this track has everything you need.
