Review: Majestic album from Calibre, who has long been heralded as a genius in D&B circles. His sixth studio album does nothing to dispel this belief and signals a return to his early noughties heyday when he knocked out sublime and understated but fully formed musical gems for fun. "Condition" has a slightly sunnier disposition than his 2010 long player Even If, but still retains the beautifully melancholic touch that has become Calibre's trademark. Standout tracks "Who's Singing" and "Mirage" are both haunting lessons in liquid and the tougher edged "Garbage Man" and "Schlager" are built for maximum impact. A must have.

Solina
How We Used To Live
Review: To drum and bass connoisseurs of a certain vintage, uttering the name Peshay is likely to elicit fond memories of the genre's golden era. A name synonymous with some of the finest tracks in D&B history, news that Peshay is currently working on a new album is both surprising and exciting! Forthcoming on the equally seminal V Records imprint, a taste of what to expect is afforded by this twelve inch double drop. Lead track "Solina" drips with epicness, steadily rising from the orchestral ether, aligning with a vintage steppahs beat building a head of steam that explodes into the main thrust. As good as "Solina" is, the old skool crowd will head straight for the B Side annihilator "How We Used To Live". A darkside roller of the highest pedigree, dread vibes abound over the ruffest of drum sounds which fully demonstrate how devastating Peshay can be!

The Upbeats & Trei - "Wear & Tear"
The Upbeats & Dose - "Raiders"
Review: Veteran New Zealand duo The Upbeats finally unleash "Wear & Tear", their devastating collab with Trei, which has seen plenty of airtime from the likes of Noisia, Ed Rush, Optical, DJ Hype and DJ Die in recent months - a fact that's only increased the public clamour for its release! Those unfamiliar with the track, beware its potency when unleashed, rising from glitched beginnings into a all encompassing combo of wall shattering bass and stadium sized drums. It's backed with the equally rowdy "Raiders", a collab with Dose that twists down a darkly dystopian junglist tunnel but is still dominated by a screechingly effective bassline.

Tower Of Love (feat Paul Randolph - extended 12" mix)
Keep Me Down (feat Angel Johnson - full length mix)
Review: Former Good Looking lynchpin and chief Japanese D&B exponent Makoto lifts two tracks from his third album Souled Out. Lead track "Towers of Love" expertly melds a soulful big band sound to the rhythmic template of drum and bass, sort of like Ronson choosing D&B as the destination of his next bandwagon jump, but, you know, good. Furthermore it features the iconic hollerations of Detroit musician Paul Randolph - whose tones have featured on any number of labels over the years. On the flip "Keep Me Down" burns with late melody before bursting into life, Angela Johnson's sweet harmonies drawing out a vintage rolling liquid groove.

Footnotes
Review: In advance of Dom's hotly anticipated forthcoming long player, he has offered up this taster and all bodes well. Having been at the forefront of the darker strain of D&B for many years, he continues the theme with this pair of absolute smashers. "Flux", meanwhile, is simply nasty. Relentless, pounding drums and all manner of dirty growliness mark this one out as a real darkside anthem. "2084" is no less forgiving, an almost gentle intro reeling you in before giving way to a monster drop which will have you checking under the bed. Just keep the lights on and you'll be fine.

Trespass
No Justice (Jubei remix)
Review: Scene stalwarts and undisputed D&B legends Total Science head over to Blackout Music for their next release, which comes in the form of "Trespass" - a tough, menacing cut with acerbic breaks, hissing hi hats sitting on top a rumbling b-line and disorientating ragga vocal sample and cooing SFX adding a touch of old skool jungle to the proceedings. Then it's over to Metalheadz's finest, Jubei, who goes in on the remix of "No Justice" with just the aplomb you would expect - sweeping synths, crackling SFX and the gnarliest Icicle-meets-Enei-esque bassline. Killer!

City Of Lonely Runaways
Dischord
Review: Disfigured Dubz continue their rich vein of release form, as Exit boss D Bridge joins the likes of Skream, Instra:mental and Phaeleh in adding to the label's double figure catalogue numbers. Operating at his beloved 170bpm, D Bridge manages to draw out a level of pensive emotion across the two arrangements here that is rarely matched by his peers, with song titles to match! "City Of Lonely Runaways" brushes silently into action as a lolloping liquid bump picks up the complex chord sequences and deep orchestral touches that hit you in heart. Check the flip for the more intrusive percussive nature of "Dischord" with swinging syncopation challenging your attention aside warm chiming chords and kaleidoscopic melodic flourishes. As usual, it's left to D Bridge to fully explore the crevices of the genre left untouched by the formulaic masses.
