Review: "It's like painting with button and sliders... Melting and dripping, seeping yourself liquid into the machinery." So said Darren Cunningham when discussing the creation of R.I.P, his long awaited follow up to Splazsh. It's a compelling image that works in practice too. R.I.P creates microcosmic sound worlds within each track: "Holy Water" for instance tumbles in on itself in a melange of shimmering sinewave droplets, while the pitchshifted waves of "Tree Of Knowledge" seem to inhale and exhale like a living being, crumpling inwards on itself to repeat the same motion ad infinitum. And although it uses much the same, occasionally abrasive sonic building blocks as Cunningham's been developing for many years, the pastoral tones of "Uriel's Black Harp" and the Alva Noto styles of "Jardin" make R.I.P a surprisingly graceful album. It may not be techno as many will know it, but Cunningham has never made techno in the traditional sense anyway - and it's clear on listening to R.I.P that he's only just beginning to realise the musical forms that have been swarming inside his brain for years.

Bob Ostertag - "The Surgeon General (1977)"
Rrose - "The Surgeon General (No Child Left Behind)"
Rrose - "The Surgeon General (Her Insides Laid Bare)"
Review: The Surgeon General sees the mysterious Sandwell District alumnus Rrose launches a new imprint in typically unconventional style, once again working with iconic synth musician Bob Ostertag. Surgeon General was recorded by Ostertag a quarter of a century previously and it starts with what sounds like the forlorn whistle of a steam train, weaving its way in and out of silence for a few minutes. Then there follows a deconstructed rhythm that drips like rivulets of water down a wall and bursts of eerie ambient sounds. Despite the fact that Ostertag used basic equipment and the composition predates contemporary electronic music, it has aged extremely well. Rrose's creepily titled "Her Insides Laid Bare" remix is an atmospheric ambient arrangement, with the occasional anti-rhythm clanging away in the background. He/she adopts a different approach on the "No Child Left Behind" reshape. There, dreamy, filtered chords unravel over a skipping rhythm and pinprick beats, as a swirling but nonetheless forceful filter lends it the requisite momentum. If Surgeon General is indicative of where Eaux is heading, then he is clearly seeking to use his new label to push experimental electronic music.

Review: Pitched somewhere between the gritty, propulsive beats of Los Angeles, and the exploratory jazz of Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus's fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes is arguably the most delicate record he's ever produced. Described as a "collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies", it steers away from bigger moments, choosing instead to present an understated patchwork of breezy jazz samples, dusty hip-hop beats smeared vocals seemingly inspired by DMT hallucinations. While previous efforts were wildly futuristic at times, Until The Quiet Comes is confidently classicist - and seals Flying Lotus's position as one of our generation's visionary producers.

He Loves Me (Four Tet remix)
Cars (Daniel Miller & Gareth Jones Sunroof remix)
Review: Remixes of To Rococo Rot from Four Tet and a Daniel Miller/Gareth Jones collaborative effort line up either side of this City Slang 12"; released in anticipation of the label priming a much needed reissue programme of the three LPs the Berlin trio released with them. Both Four Tet and Mute founder Miller are long term aficionados of To Rococo Rot and their efforts here will also feature on a bonus disc of material that City Slang are releasing as part of an extensive box set, though these two remixes truly belong on 12 inch vinyl. You can tell how much of a fan Four Tet is, as his remix of "He Loves Me", a track from the band's 1997 archetypal release Veiculo, retains the trio's minimalist origins yet masterfully teases out all new glistening melodic intricacies - the unrestrained female cheer towards the end does sound amusingly out of place however. Complementing this, Miller and Jones rework "The Amateur View" into what they have quite aptly described as a "Krautrock disco truck".

Review: Robert Henke has had quite a career, starting in his early days through the now cult-like Chain Reaction label, his own impressive Monolake imprint and even engineering the best part of Ableton Live. It was about time for another full-length work from the mad Berliner, and it couldn't have been more stunning. The LP travels all corners of house, techno and all its affiliated sub-genres. It's one that won't adhere to normal structures but instead paves its own road through sparse beats, chirping melodies and all at the same time retains that irreplaceable Berlin tradition: slick, visionary and complete is all we can say.

Review: It was a good year in every respect for Spain's Semantica Records. They ticked all the right boxes and even introduced us to the power of Svreca but this EP by Arcanoid pushed all previous boundaries. It almost feels like an LP, where the tracks converse with one another to develop a glorious vision of the artist's mind. "The oppressed drum beat of "Espora" diverges neatly into the electro trickery of "Force Of Gravity"; whilst the flip introduces "Interzone", a chirping cascade of melodies and hi-hats, ending on "Zero G", a brilliant acid-powered excursion into the ether.

Review: Even by the high standards of atmosphere-obsessed leftfield heads, this 12" from new producer Wife is impressively atmospheric. Built around clicking rhythms and barely audible vocals, with all manner of drunken chords and stoned effects laden atop, it's presented as two sides of continuous music. While that evokes memories of rather too indulgent ambient releases of the past, there's little pretentious or self-serving about Stoic. There are moments of genuine beauty, and a poignancy - particularly to the semi-organic vocal cut "Circles" - that's hard to ignore. Even "Shards", the release's most ambient moment, is a thing of untold beauty.

Review: Sven Weisemann returned to FauxPas under his less-known Desolate moniker, one which he uses predominantly for more experimental investigations into sound. Celestial Light Beings opens with "Ambrosia", a quick reminder of what this guy is capable and warning off all that is to come. The LP floats gently between different moods and styles, from the broken beat rhythms of "Teariness Of Lemnia", through the haunting, noise-induced soundscapes of "Se7en" and ending up at the soothing synth waves and piano keys of "Exclusion Of Light". A wonderfully executed project and one that grows with each new listen.

Review: Ghostly International are back on the ante-up with Com Truise aka Seth Haley, a Brooklyn-based synth maverick who has made a name for himself this year. From the melancholic timbres of "Sundripped" to the Italo-disco chimes of "Slow Peels", this is a record with a one size fits all banner. "Norkuy" is also a stunner, showing off Haley's synthesiser skills but "5891" is one of those special moments, sending you swimming in a distant but reassuring world of smooth chords and spwaning cowbells.

Review: As always, great things emanate from the Scandinavian borders and Pekka Airaksinen has been in the game for a long time now, never afraid of indulging in outer-space harmonics and bizarre timbres. This has to be one of his best works to date, with every piece showcasing the artist's mastery at creating mystery and style through his experimentations. "E" opens the LP with swinging Arabic chimes, while the beauty of "Simha" lies in its harp-like dings and bells gliding aside bizarre but wonderful beat trickles. "B3" is a phantasmal parade of modular frequencies and "Simhaghosha" takes 606-like beats and pummels them through a long swell of mutating drones and tweets. On side 2, there's the standout moment, "Suvarnaratnakaracchatrakuta", a track that is a million miles away from the modern and gritty house sound but that would not sound out of place in a Ron Morelli set. This is experimental electronics at its best - highly recommended.

Review: 'Unknown' anonymously contacted lots of blogs a while back, to introduce their new 'hush hush' side project. It could be a hoax of course, but that didn't stop everybody from here to Timbuktu (including Ellie Goulding) raving about it. In fact it's the latter's involvement that's led to speculation that it's actually the work of her recent beau, Skrillex. Who knows for sure, but what isn't in doubt is the quality of the music. #001 is a slow tropical affair, with a constant thumping kick and deep-in-the-Amazon atmospherics. Elsewhere we have the warped R&G(litch) of #002 (complete with 'ethereal' female vocals, wink wink) and the Actress-aping weirdness of #004.

Review: In his younger days Lee Gamble was a jungle DJ, and it's hard not to see Diversions as an example of what the record's press release describes as an example of "cued recall", aiming to trigger latent memories in those familiar with the source material. But for those unfamiliar with the genre or the mid-90s culture surrounding it, it's the palpable sense of immersion that makes Diversions so engaging. Gamble's extensive experience in software-based composition for Entr'acte is used to draw every nuance out of the physical source material; the ecstatic stillness and oddly pitched drones of "M25 Echo" for instance recall Oneohtrix Point Never's sense of the otherworldly, but soaked in tape crackle that places you right between the spools. In a sense, Diversions feels like an album about a lost and oft-mythologised element of British culture; as Ghost Box's releases tend to present a Wicker Man-inspired take on English village life, Diversions is an album that takes mid-90s dance music nostalgia and places it the context of a damp, foggy corner of the English countryside, providing an elegy not just for jungle, but for an era of dance music largely ended by the Criminal Justice Act of 1994.

Hype Williams - "Hype Williams Meets Shangaan Electro" (version)
Review: Honest Jons are our undisputed favourites as far as bringing forth new and unexpected projects goes. One such project is their glorious string of releases which saw several contemporary electronic producers re-interpret the South African electro deluge of Shangaan Electro, a near 10 piece band consisting of wild dancers, freaky masks and ludicrously memorable anthems. This release features the experimental duo of Demdike Stare and the mysterious but wonderful pair that is Hype Williams. Demdike's remix is a sparse and sub-aqueous drone filtered through irregular bongos and melting swirls of voices, whilst the "version" pretty much reduces those already scarce drums to mere memories. Over on the flip, Hype Williams create a sublimely majestic rhythm, those vocals swaying so darn effortlessly over the rugged drum kit pouncing lazily beneath it. Their version injects a severely chopped slice of bass and concentrates primarily on the percussion - mounds of delays and reverbs present in true HW fashion.

Review: The second Aphex re-release this week, and a second time to pick up on a genuine moment of electronic history. Originally released in 1996, his fifth album in as many years meant business from the very moment the wild and whimsical opener "4" scribbled it way through the speakers. With jaunty jams such as "Cornish Acid" and "Fingerbib" running amok mid-set, Richard D James Album acted as a fine mission statement to expect the unexpected and never anticipate formula or form. And it still carries that very same message today. Essential.

Review: Sam KDC seems like a perfect fit for the Samurai Red Seal label, the UK producer having previously proved himself more than capable of crafting finely judged atmospheric soundscapes for exemplary labels such as Auxiliary and Nu Directions. Between Dreams is a natural progression for KDC, with Samurai Red Seal granting him the freedom to burrow deeper into elegant and emotive layers of sound, with the title track an all too woozy and intoxicating blend of blissful textures and contemplative moments. "Downpour" introduces an element of darkness and could quite easily be mistaken for one of Demdike Stare's more rhythmically driven moments. Superb.

Realise
Review: The second release of Old Apparatus's Sullen Tone imprint sees the first of a trilogy in which a whole record is given over to a different member of the collective. It's still attributed to Old Apparatus, but the difference audible across Realise is stark; although opener "Chicago" still growls and lurches like the alternate reality dubstep of their previous releases, its piano riff and 4/4 beat references the house music of its namesake, while the percussion of "Found" rattles like a steampunk pinball machine. "Holding" meanwhile sounds like a combination of Druqks-era Aphex Twin and King Tubby dub, funnelling tight D&B breakbeats through cavernous brass, and closer "Realise" stacks layer upon layer of atmospheric pressure on its funereal clockwork motions.

Pluto
For The Hook
Review: While stylistically different to what you might expect from People's Potential Unlimited, this seven inch from The Trash Company is another essential release from the DC based label who are so good at uncovering the forgotten stories of North American music history. The tale of The Trash Company is one too detailed to compress into the space of a record review (do check the Funky Virginia blog for a complete story) but this release represent the first material to surface from the band's creative force Max Monroe in some 30 years. Diagnosed with Synesthesia - which allows you to interpret words and sounds in terms of colour and texture, Monroe's music is undoubtedly influenced by the neurological condition which makes the two tracks here sound crazily innovative. "Pluto" sounds like Minimal Wave artist Phillipe Laurent covering Dilla while "For The Hook" is reminiscent of a lost cut from Demdike Stare's Tryptych series. Look out for a full LP later this year released on PPU and Steady Sounds.

Wings (Floating Points remix)
Review: Steadily rising indie-electronica crossover act The Invisible made their name on Matthew Herbert's Accidental imprint, but their emergence on Ninja Tune sees them tapping further into an emotive well which gets fully realised on the latest single "Wings". It's hard to deny the resemblance to Radiohead in both singer Dave Okumu's breathless delivery and the soaring guitar work, although the beats have a rough finish not found in Oxford's favourite sons. Floating Points takes the reins for a sublimely delicate remix that keeps much of the melodic content intact, while the rugged rhythms get duped for gossamer flecks of hats and cymbals and not much else.

Collin Gorman Weiland - "Curse"
Antonym - "Cinnamon Air"
Review: As part of Downwards' DO series, this 7" continues the theme of industrial, synth-wave strangeness that came to bear such a heavy influence on label boss Regis. Collin Gorman Weiland sounds as though he's been plucked from the seediest nether region of post-punk as the grainy guitar tones of "Curse" call out languidly underneath a thick blanket of distortion. This leaves plenty of room for Antonym's considerably breezier forays into synth-funk to cruise around. There's still an underlying tension in the carefully arranged arpeggios, but compared to the bleak drones of Weiland's own turn, it's thoroughly accessible. Highly recommended.

Review: As one of the landmark releases of electronic music recognised by few, it's little wonder that the self-released vinyl version of Monotonprodukt 07 from 1982 fetches astronomical prices online. When listening to the polyrhythmic studies of Konrad Becker, it's quite startling how great an impact his work had on both the experimental and dance music factions of electronica. While overtly bleak in tone, the measured maths of the industrial pulses and tones calls to mind Autechre at their most primordial, and yet overall this is an album that radiates humane warmth through fuzzy tones and distorted vocals. Don't expect this reissue to stay around for long.

Review: Minimal Wave is dedicated to resurrecting lost and priceless electronic gems from the 80s, and the latest from Shedelvreter is just near unfathomable for the time it was made: "Best" opens with off-putting crackles and distant screams, whilst "Sounding Heaven" is just the perfect incarnation of organised noise - precise, conceptual but utterly chaotic. "Effigy" is another chest-burster, with its low-slung percussion dicing away to the sound of a weird but irresistibly fantastic modular framework.

Review: It was a pleasing surprise to catch Eject Project pop up on Russia's wonderful Ethereal Sound, and even more so to see the label stranding out to great things beyond deep house. It's more of a concept EP, with the title track exchanging frantically between ghostly piano keys and rain-fuelled noise implementations. "Noir" sounds like the ancient tribal horns of civilisations lost in time and "Veld" is an intricate patchwork of sweeping sonic feedback and long, reverberating pads. The finishing touches of "Heart" are a real pleasure - soft and euphoric keys lost to a synth fuzziness only fathomable in the mind of Eject Project.
