Farmer God
The Touch
Review: One hand-stamped 7" from Edward of C's Red Motorbike label, two totally different stories... "Farmer God" is a yarn of unfettered Balearic proportions. Languishing somewhere in the Wild West, 150 years ago, it's a lolloping composition where each nylon string weep is echoed by an equally mournful organ flurry. The chips-are-down soundtrack to any great western, it's Eddie at his most sedate and contemplative. "The Touch" brings us back to the present day by way of a sexy mid-tempo strut. All disco bubbles and overlayed pianos, this should really be a 10" just to accommodate the feel good vibes.

Closer
Review: A fourth release on the Sunshine Sound label arrives and is likely to prove as irresistible as previous trawls from the acetates of some of disco's finest acts. TS Monk will need no introduction for anyone that considers themselves a scholar of the disco movement; formed by New Yorker Thelonious Monk Jr. the group served up three sublime LPS for Mirage during a prolific early '80s run, bridging the gap between disco and funk in the process. The four cuts included here predate TS Monk's break out tracks such as "Bon Bon Vie" and "Candidate For Love" and have never been released before. Disco collectors should not sleep!

Do It Do It Disco (Tom Noble Remix)
Do It Do It Disco (J Roc Re Edit)
Do It Do It Disco (Unreleased extended mix)
Review: Bay Area soul/funk duo Myron & E's 2013 debut album for Stones Throw, Broadway, was something of a surprise hit. Here, one of the LP's genuine highlights - the authentic '70s disco-soul gem "Do It Do It Disco" gets the remix treatment. The standout mix comes from PPU regular Tom Noble, who delivers a synth-heavy disco-boogie version that nudges the San Francisco duo's original further towards roller-disco territory. As with most of Noble's mixes, there's a celebratory feel that's nothing less than delicious. Elsewhere, Myron & E deliver an extended, 12-minute take on the four-minute album version - with a little help from backing band the Soul Investigators - while J-Rocc drops a delay-laden, filter-heavy re-edit that makes more of the original's brilliant disco drums. In a word: essential.

Review: Here's something of a treat for disco diggers: an essential collection of little-known, hard-to-find and downright essential Brazilian disco and boogie. Put together by Brazilian digger Junior Santos, Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds is full of must-have material, from the familiar bounce and punchy horns of the Teena Marie-ish "Moral Tem Hora" from Cristina Camargo, to the sweet shuffle and carnival-friendly swing of Carlos Dafe's "Escorpiao". With quality material throughout picking highlights is tough, though we're particularly fans of the jazz guitar-laden boogie of Famks' "Labrinto" and Sandra De Sa's thrilling "Negra Flor".

What You Did
Come & Get My Lovin'
Review: Active since the early 90s, London selector and producer Johnny Miller commands a reputation as a DJ that can spin across the board, is an expert in Ableton and probably possesses a record collection that is the envy of any budding vinyl addict. Given his knowledge and talent, Miller is in theory a perfect candidate to lay down some edits for the KAT label, and in practice this was proved right with the JM Edits #1 issued through the imprint earlier this year. Miller's on form again with Vol. 2, with "What You Did" a quite sublime Chaka Khan recasting which really displays his prowess at classic edit skills - re-arranging, chopping and filtering the track with aplomb. On the B side, the style switches from disco to early house with Hacienda classic "Come Get My Love" by Dionne getting some subtle boosts in all the right places.

Time Capsule (Andras remix)
Cascade
Solar Eclipse
Review: Welcome to the dusty white sands of Balearic Russia. After their breakthrough release on Mellophonia earlier this year, A Vision Of Panorama make their wax debut on Manchester's Aficionado. Luxury synth work a la mid 80s, if you didn't know any better, these four originals have been unearthed in a secret vault Jan Hammer didn't know he had. From the gentle melodic bobbing and major key overlays of "Cascade" to the languishing star-gazing allure of "Solar Eclipse" via the liquid-like woodblock rhythm of "Southern Breeze", each one of these will whisk you somewhere warm in seconds. For a more modern, dubbier disco touch jump on Andras's remix of "Time Capsule". Bliss.

Sleepyhead
Dunk
Review: What? Beautiful Swimmers on PPU? You know this is a combination that will just exude excellence from every pore of its black vinyl DNA. It makes perfect sense as well because Beautiful Swimmer Max D has been an irregular source of edits and remixes for PPU over the years - the "Go Bananas" refix being a favourite here. Sleepyhead follows fare of a more contemporary nature from Legowelt and Pender Street Steppers and Future Times completists will most definitely want this 12" in their collection. The Dolo drums and sweet new age sounds are present on the title track, which is filled with all manner of little edits and interesting rhythmic kinks but don't sleep on the blunted Go-Go vibes of "Dunk".

Eric ''Dunks'' Duncan - "Nerve Control"
Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco - "Disco De Chocolate"
Review: You may not have heard of the Mareh festival, but apparently it's the Brazilian equivalent of Croatian favourites such as Garden and Electric Elephant. The people behind the festival have decided to spread their wings, and here launch their offshoot label with a little help from Eric Duncan, Pete Herbert and Tricky Disco. The former kicks things off with "Nerve Control", a chugging fusion of Italo and analogue house that's reminiscent of his collaborations with Rhythm Odyssey on Golf Channel. Flip for Herbert and Trisco's "Disco De Choclate" a kind of Balearic disco/reggae disco hybrid that makes excellent use of punchy horn samples. Both tracks are undeniably "floor-friendly", and sound like they could generate serious heat over the next few months.

Old Spice - "Pieniadze"
Old Spice - "Chce Ci Powieziec"
Jazxing - "A Moze By"
Mental - "Unicaj Zdjec"
Review: Zambon's The Very Polish Cut-Outs label has stumbled on a genius-like formula: delivering on-point re-edits (mostly from Polish producers) of forgotten, unknown gems from Poland's communist past. It's an approach that has consistently delivered killer material. There are four more gems to be found on this third vinyl sampler for the online series, with Old Spice's edits of "Pleniadze" - a hustling disco-reggae bomb - and the wild disco screamer "Chce Ci Powieziec" hitting home hard. Flip for the languid Balearic soft rock of "A Moze By" (re-edited by Jazking) and the curious, post-punk, new wave-era brilliance of Mental's rework of "Unicaj Zdjec". In other words, it's another essential selection.

Back Door (Gettin Down) (6:09)
Review: Tom Noble teams up with Mystic Pleasure on this must have Superior Elevation 12" issued with the assistance of Peoples Potential Unlimited. If you were one of those that indulged in the Tom Noble edits of "Africa Bump" and "Party Together" for PPU back in 2009, then you know this combination of artist and label equates to dancefloor gold and will need little further wooing to indulge here (PPU have just repressed that 12" for those didn't btw). Everything Noble touches drips with disco authenticity and that's the case here with "Back Door (Gettin Down)" a sublime funk addled floor burner of the highest quality. One Sided and comes hand stamped with the PPU logo.

Track 2
Review: Having previously restricted their output to one record per year, the Secret Squirrels posse have been very busy in 2014 with this fifth 12" their third disco transmission since #3 dropped in February. Somewhat cunningly still shrouded in mystery, the Secret Squirrels crew present another two extensions for the intended delight of disco selectors everywhere. The more scholarly DJs out there will most likely nod knowingly as both the tracks here play out, with the B Side a particular string laden gem in the disco canon, but it's how the squirrels use their scalpels that matters most when it comes to this record, some 1210s, a mixer and a willing dancefloor. Cut loud for optimum play.

Tapper Zukie - "Visions Of Love"
Tapper Zukie & The Warriors - "Love Dream"
Review: During the late '70s and early 1980s, Jamaican-in-London Tapper Zukie was responsible for a number of killer dub disco cuts, most of which have been irritatingly hard to find ever since. It's fair to say that "Visions Of Love", now re-released on his own Stars imprint (or repressed sneakily to make it look official) is one of those must-have cuts. Blessed with the heavy pulse of dub, the synth-laden shimmer of electrofunk and the open-minded dancefloor attitude of post-punk disco, it should be an essential purchase. As with the original release, it comes backed with the thrillingly Balearic "Love Dream", an instrumental dub that makes more of the original's wonderful synths and tactile bassline.

Running (The Chase) (4:27)
Kalvier (6:02)
Bonobobeat (6:30)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Jan Schulte and Diskoking Burnhart McKoolski's Bufiman project - two years, in fact. After previously plying their wares on Verein Freir Menschen und Musik, the eccentric Balearic/disco duo have been snapped up by Gilb'r's Versatile imprint. "Running (The Chase)" is something of a killer - a driving chunk of clavinet-laden disco fuelled by a seriously heavy post-punk/dub disco bassline. "Kavalier" is deeper and spookier, with new age synth melodies riding a loose, Afro-influenced groove. The slower "Bonobobeat", meanwhile, is a low-slung delight, with snaking synthesizer lines wrapping themselves around dense, head-nodding disco percussion.

Review: From DVAS to "DZE", Jex continues his solo adventures with this crystalline instrumental disco 12".Sumptuous lounge instrumentals soaked in juicy synths, each cut shimmers with just the right amount of jazzy narratives and layered arrangement. We lead with the piano-primed "DZE" which features legendary Italo pianist Steve Galante! Tim Blake - "Last Ride Of The Boogie Child"
El Coco - "Coco Kane" (Frasier edit)
Delia & Gavin - "Revelee" (Carl Craig remix)
Review: Tim Sweeney is pushing the boat out to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his weekly Beats in Space radio show. As well as a two-CD mix, the 15th anniversary comp is being stretched over five slabs of vinyl: a triple LP and this double-pack sampler. Like the other formats, this includes some previously unheard material in the shape of Frasier's edit of El Coco's disco classic "Coco Kane". The rest of the tracks could be accurately described as Beats in Space classics, from the Latin IDM shuffle of Plaid's hard-to-find 1992 gem "Scoobs In Columbia" and Balil's deliciously positive "3/4 Heart", to Carl Craig's epic rub of Delia & Gavin's DFA anthem "Revelee".

Je Na' (Mario Boncaldo original 1983 special mix)
Pagaia (Mario Boncaldo original 1983 special mix)
Review: Archeo Recordings is a reissue record label that regenerates old, lost, obscure (and forgotten) rare gems of Italian music of the 70s and 80s, and not only. All outputs are licensed by the artists and the vintage labels; audio tracks are remastered in their original form; the sleeves and center labels are graphically recreated for today but all based on the original images. Archeo would like to make the music available to a wider audience of collectors, DJs, music lovers of a forgotten time.
All releases are hand-numbered limited edition vinyl. The first 100 copies of each release are pressed in coloured vinyls. This first release is dedicated to the sought- mix "Je -na / Pagaia" by Tony Esposito 1983 - cult record and more and more "expensive" - which is a rarity of Afro-cosmic Italian music. A very popular piece at the time and fortunately returned in vogue today thanks to many followers, DJs and lovers to the great "Balearic" family. The music of Tony Esposito is inspired by sounds from many countries around the world, mixing tribal rhythms with Neapolitan melodies, well represented by the track "Je -na", where the wide range of styles is manifested in its hypnotic sounds and rhythm in his percussion. The two tracks were born in 1983 after a trip to Jamaica and were composed together with Pino Daniele. The style and sound of these two pieces reflects the influence of Bob Marley and his group, with whom Tony Esposito has worked both in Italy and in Kingston Town, Jamaica .

Like many of the greatest Italo-disco records, Tony Esposito's 1983 double A-side "Je-Na'"/"Pagaia" is ridiculously rare. Put it this way: if you fancy nabbing yourself an original copy, it will make a serious dent in your wallet. This welcome reissue presents both tracks in their original 12" glory, mixed with clubs in mind by Mariano Boncaldo of Klein & M.B.O fame. It's the A-side that's arguably the pick of the pair, featuring as it does a Balearic-friendly blend of dense, bongo-laden rhythms, tribal chants and delay-heavy guitars. There's a bit more of a hazy disco bounce to "Pagaia", which sounds a little like a long lost Tullio de Piscopo record - all jazz-fusion scat singing, sunny horns and shuffling rhythms.

Review: Malmo-based scalpel fiend Sergio Rizzolo describes his style as "stoner disco". Having previously delivered two typically baked collections of edits for Joe's Bakery, he brings his brand of redeye-friendly dancefloor haziness to Amen Brother. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the winding Euro synth-rock of "Four Twenty" and Rare Earth-goes-psychedelic "The Odyssey" (probably our pick of the bunch), to the laidback, dubbed-out swing of "Strangers World". Also rather impressive is opener "Stoned Apes", an attractive and floor-friendly cut-up of an old stoner funk track blessed with cosmic synths and a killer bassline.

Get Down
Review: The Funky Saturday label is an intermittent concern associated with the club night of the same name, France's longest-running funk monthly no less! Some five years after the label launched with an 1" of edits from resident DJ Pharoah, it's back for more on this 7" funker featuring him and fellow selector Moar. Lead track "Gimme Some" feels wedged in that warm spot between latter day funk and early forms of disco (check those Philly horns) and is blessed by a killer vocal. Whilst "Get Down" leans on a '80s boogie funk vibe. If you've not attended a Funky Saturday dance, this 7" acts as a fairly good reflection of what to expect.

Review: Ahead of the second Bombay Disco compendium, Cultures Of Soul tease us with two show-stopping Brother Cleve edits. As with the inaugural album, this collection celebrates the subcontinent's more obscure cinematic soundtracks and what's known in India as the item number, the cabaret style dances performed in Asian cinemas. "Jab Chaye" remains in its original incarnation with mild touches on rhythm and arrangement while "Dance Music" has been given a complete flip-around with chunky jacking beats that complement the frenetic tabla drums consummately. Album teasers don't get much more exciting than this.

Review: Given the infamous depth of Nick The Record's vinyl collection, you'd expect this contribution to Z Records' excellent Under The Influence series to be packed to the rafters with unheralded gems. Predictably, it is, delivering 22 cuts that should be thrillingly new to all but the most dusty-fingered collectors. Picking out highlights from such an excellent and in-depth collection is tough, but try the steel drums-laden celebration of Boogsie's "Can't You See Me", the synth-laden jazz-funk badness of "Keep Your Shoes" by MC and His Great Googa-Moogas, and the fizzing, melody-rich 808 electro of Ronnie Jones "Video Games". Review: Having kept his powder dry for some time, Danny Krivit seems to have got back into the re-edit game in a big way. Following his recent reworks of Cerrone comes another 12" of expert scalpel works. On the A you'll find "Corazon", a vibraphone-heavy rework of a disco-funk cover of the track made famous by LTJ Exchange, laden with brilliant disco breaks and parping horns. "Deep Sky" is an altogether more intense affair, with dense percussion and curious noises jostling for position alongside murky chords and intoxicating vocal chants. It's arguably the pick of the two tracks, and has all the makings of a leftfield disco dancefloor smash.
