Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

90's
East To West
Phone Line
90's Reflex
Review: FINALLY! We've been scheming for Eglo to drop Phoneline since the dapper hat wearing Funkineven dropped in the midst of his Boiler Room set late last year! Our favourite Eglozoid and Fatima are no studio strangers, each sharing credits on the others previous Eglo releases but this is without doubt their best work together to date. Eglo could have just dropped "Phoneline" as a one track 12" and we'd be singing it's praises to anyone that can hear, so kudos to all involved for complementing the track with further examples of Funkineven and Fatima's obvious studio chemistry. "90s" echoes the satin dipped RnB antics of TLC at their most sultry, whilst it's complemented by that killer swinging boom bap arrangement from Funks, whilst "East To West" crosses LA boogie vibes with some off the scale rhythmic subtleties that would do Maurice Fulton proud, with Fatima showing the breadth of their vocal range over the elastic groove. This 12" is dominated by the brilliance of "Phoneline" however, with Fatima and Funkineven indulging in flirtatious chatter over demented yet slick as f*ck MPC manipulation. It's one of those tracks that tops the charts for months to come in the bizarro world we'd rather live in - I guess we'll have to make do with jamming this in every dancehall possible.

Samuel Andre Madison aka Rev S - "This Thing"
2400 Operator - "NWS PT 1" (feat Rev S)
DJ Jus Ed - "Let's Groove" (beats)
DJ Jus Ed - "Let's Groove" (Medley mix)
Review: Jus Ed gets another slew of like-minded deep house heads together for the latest double-pack venture from Underground Quality. Samuel Andre Madison dominates the first disc with his Rev S moniker serving up a thoroughly bumpy jam anchored by an almighty kick on "This Thing", while he appears on 2400 Operator's more shuffling but equally mellow "NWS PT 1". Ed himself takes care of disc two with the smacking "beats" cut of "Let's Groove", which features some walloping drums off-set by tasty filtered synths in that plain and simple Jus Ed style. The "Medley" mix on the other hand features a bizarre reprisal of "I'm Coming" amongst other elements over the same "Let's Groove" track. Highly recommended.

Dazed & Amazed
Everybody's Beautiful
Everybody's Beautiful (Acid mix)
Review: Hypercolour offshoot Hype Ltd reach release number seven and get a round of applause from the Juno office for reaching out to one of Chicago's most venerated vanguards of underground house music in Amir Alexander. His Hype Ltd debut Everybody's Beautiful EP follows noted outings on highly respected Atlantic hubs such as Hakim Murphy's Machining Dreams, Deep Vibes and Plan B and continues to display Alexander's finely crafted brand of body music that's in truth indebted as much to Detroit as it is Chicago. "Dazed & Amazed" sets the tone, greedily occupying the A Side to send out sumptuous swirls of smeared textures that intertwine with the rough and tough kicking groove as distant voices get lost deep in the mix, yet still retain their crucial rhythmic poise. On the flip "Everybody's Beautiful" proves to be as inviting and intoxicating, with relentless and precise drum programming swamped in ethereal harmonies that subtly increase in intensity as Alexander's own vocal musings usher forth. The accompanying 303 laden acid dub version of the same track only proves how adept an operator Alexander is. Big release!

See More Days (feat Jacob Korn & Gustaph)
Still Serious (Summer tool)
Er Komt Nog
Review: Damn! The Toch Al De Vijfde EP makes for a long overdue return to the solo release game for We Play House main man San Soda! We're not quite sure what the title means as we skipped Flemish A Level at school (Yet already the fifth?) but San Soda is truly on form here, dropping four fully fledged deep house gems - one of which features a certain Dresden dynamo called Jacob Korn! As soon as those oven warm keys spiral out in tandem with a classic house harmony on "You Hear Me" we expect this release will be on your want list but do check "See More Days" which features the aforementioned Korn as well as Hercules & Love Affair singer Gustaph, who belts out some Red D penned lyrics over the Korn Soda production with the sort of aplomb that obviously impressed Andy Butler.

Under The Bunker
I Teach You (original mix)
I Teach You (Hardcore version)
Review: After debuting the Professor Inc project with that refined four track release on the consistently good Boe Recordings, Parisian house mainstay Frederic Poix expands his discography with a record for the recently established label Phonogramme. Under The Bunker is the Paris label's fourth release, and sees Poix collaborate with MB aka sound engineer Mathieu Berthet across three tracks that are described quite succinctly by the label as "using a drum machine and a keyboard on a sequencer with enlightenment". The drum machine is the most prominent element of the title track, as the combination of thick kicks and tinny hits provide the requisite forward momentum upon which the duo squeeze out some foggy freeform keys - it all bounces along like a slightly less saturated Restoration jam. On the flip "I Teach You" appears in both original and "hardcore remix" form, with the former's strident rhythmic base allowing Poix and Brechet the space to playfully embrace the melodic aspect fully, drawing on rich layers of sound that spiral brilliantly (watch out for the unannounced classic house vocal that arrives midway through). The latter version implements the vocal from the off, making it a great set opener, while the key lines have an almost Larkin-esque luminescence to them.

We Came To (house mix)
We Came To (dub mix)
Review: Arguably the connoisseur's DFA artist of choice thanks to his seminal album Days Of Mars, produced with Delia Gonzalez, and acid house inspired Black Meteoric Star alias, Gavin Russom is preparing to unleash the full force of The Crsytal Ark with a forthcoming album. A collaborative project with vocalist Viva Ruiz that's been in operation since 2010, the Latin-tinged approach to analogue driven dancefloor psychedelia in album format promises much on the basis of We Came To (Versions). Both the house and dub versions invoke the spirit of the rave in the way only Russom can, and are quite aptly described by DFA as "a dance music rally cry - profound in its bare bones and raw production". For us it's the House Mix that steals it, leaving percussion at it's simplest and most repetitive, Russom and Ruiz look to the ever increasing circles of throbbing psychedelia that are analogues and vocals in perfect harmony to suck you right in.

Dead Rose Music Company - "Your Kisses"
Pixelife - "Mystery Clock"
Bicep - "Echo Vibes"
Midnight Magic - "Same Way I Fee Lt"
Review: Since launching last year, New York's Let's Play House imprint has delivered a string of nigh on essential releases. Given the background of those involved (Jacques Renault, Nik Mercer, James Friedman), it's perhaps little surprise that LPH releases tend to span a range of styles. They're at it again on this excellent EP. There's a delightfully melancholic, out-there chunk of tear-jerking disco/house from Dead Rose Music Company, live leftfield disco from the brilliant Midnight Magic, a thrilling fusion of Balearic nu-disco and acid house from Pixelife, and a decidedly E'd-up tribute to "Your Love" from Bicep. As ever, the quality threshold is high throughout.

Review: For anyone with an interest in the history of house music, this excellent compilation from Jerome Derradji's Still Music imprint should be essential listening. It focuses on the output of two long forgotten Chicago labels, Mitchbal and Chicago Connection Records, during the early to mid 1980s, when electro, new wave and boogie were morphing into house. As such, 122 BPM offers a mix of rare, largely overlooked cuts that bristle with analogue dancefloor intent. There's proto-jack in the shape of Jeanette Thomas's "Shake Your Body" and Z Factor's "I Am The DJ", dubbed-out Chi-town proto house from Mitchbal and Larry Williams, and some terrific bodypoppin' electro from McGhee.

Crooked Man - "Preset" (Luke live revision)
Kink & Neville Watson - "Metropole" (Luke Acid revision)
Crooked Man - "My Machine Kills Me" (Luke 8 Minutes Of Funk mix)
Kris Wadsworth - "Lime & Pink" (Luke Bass revision)
Review: Regarded by those in the know as one of the UK's most underrated selectors, Luke Solomon swiftly follows up his excellent Cutting Edge Mix CD for Sao Paolo's iconic D-Edge club with this affiliated 12" sampler on his own Little Creatures imprint. The newly minted endeavour will apparently see Solomon curate all manner of limited and lovely vinyl only projects and he sets the bar high with this delightful 12" that has him tweaking four cuts from the aforementioned mix CD. Two of the certified jams that have marked the return of Sheffield hero DJ Parrot under his fraudulent disco name Crooked Man feature get a brilliantly psychedelic revision here. Alongside this, the robust jacking brilliance of KiNK and Neville Watson's Rush Hour classique "Metropole" gets the acid treatment and Kris Wadsworth's "Lime & Pink" gets hollowed out brilliantly. Consider this a must for those that play that proper house business.
