Review: Treading an eclectic path through a twenty year career that's taken in everything from Detroit techno to vintage French ye-ye, from breakbeat-driven floor-fillers to krautrock epiphanies, David Holmes has made his name predominantly as an exemplary crate-digger and aesthete, whether soundtracking Steven Soderbergh movies or dishing our albums of his own. Thus, it comes as no surprise that this compilation - marking something of a personal journey for Holmes - is reflective of his status as an exemplary man of taste. Whether dispensing classics by the likes of David Crosby or Buddy Holly, unreleased original solo material or killer obscurities from everyone from modular synthesis cultist Keith Fullerton Whitman to Hollywood legend Jeff Bridges, this stylish nocturnal travelogue puts the listener resolutely in safe hands.

Review: The mysterious Gothenburg based collective have apparently styled this as their 'folk' album yet this is less than half the story - indeed, 'Requiem' stands as an adventurous travail through styles and headspaces, moving from the vibrant psychedelic jams of their earlier work to ritualistic acoustic interludes, and with hi-life wave-ups rubbing shoulders with grage rock grit. Their ceremonial splendour is only enhanced by this all-encompassing outlook, with the more understated moments effortlessly hitting the same revelatory dimensions as the third-eye-cleansing moments of drama. And any band who can manage to make the panpipes sound thrilling and vibrant as an ingredient in their mystical brew would appear to have strange magick indeed on their side.

Review: Having made their names respectively as a modern-day psych-pop connoisseur somewhere between Prince and Syd Barrett (Connan Mockasin) and the man behind one of the most underrated debuts of the last decade (LA Priest, AKA Late Of The Pier's Sam Dust), these two charismatic square-pegs have joined forces, and the result is as strange and beguiling as one might hope for. Mixing luminous pop hooks with experimental flourishes, and sexed-up atmospherics with cockeyed '80s sonics, 'Soft Hair' is a skewed and seductive mission statement from an odd couple hopefully built to last.

Review: Standing proud for nearly two decades as a band stretching the very shape of metal, The Dillinger Escape Plan have managed to shift and evolve whilst still maintaining the alternately frenziedly chaotic and intrepidly experimental signature style that has birthed a thousand-and-on copyists and encouraged many a musician to sort their chops out. 'Dissociation', however, is their farewell, and it's a fitting one, replete with their trademark hell-in-a-handbasket dementia yet also with considerable strength in depth and melodious appeal. We'll miss 'em.

Review: This Australian and now London-dwelling three-piece made their name by balancing out their psychedelic explorations with a somewhat Madchester-derived pop sensibility, and this second album sees them throwing this delicate balance into orbit by effectively offering more of everything - the sonic textures here are more adventurous, the hallucinogenic swirls of sound more lustrous, yet the choruses are as indelible and infectious as ever. A party album with a 'Screamadelica'-esque experimental edge, 'Every Now And Then' makes these three space cadets sound like genuine contenders.

Review: No longer simply the nearly-man egomaniac chronicled in the movie Dig, Anton Newcombe is now viewed with the kind of reverence he probably always felt he deserved, a modern master of classic psychedelia with a glint in his eye, having carved out a trademark sound that transcends retro trappings by its constantly questing and adventurous nature. The Spacemen 3-referencing sleeve of this new effort - his third work in the last two years and 15th BJM album in total - somewhat belies a sound that could come from no other maverick, its widescreen sweep locking horns with synapse-shredding experimentation.

Review: This second album from the Mercury-nominated Glaswegian sound architect may be inspired by '60s sci-fi TV classic "The Twilight Zone", but the sleeve art depicts the stairway from the flat in which he both lives and records. These however both seem peculiarly apt, as 'The Midnight Sun' has an uncanny knack for summoning the otherworldly in the everyday. Whilst his choral vocal passages and electronic soundscapes may summon a pastoral kind of chill, his melodic nous and songwriting skill memorably anchor the moody atmospherics, offering an eerie and affecting work likely to offer succour to fans of James Blake and The Blue Nile both.

Review: Hiss Golden Messenger have made their name with a Dylan-tinged brand of Americana, carving out a niche with an aesthetic homespun, wistful and soul-searching. The focus remains on his songwriting, yet here MC Taylor's outfit - containing members of Megafaun and Bon Iver's band, manage to transcend and extend their own paradigm with songs that nod to Southern soul stylings from Memphis and Muscle Shoals, whilst maintaining the rootsy charm that their mainman has made his calling card. Classicist in nature yet never falling prey to the lure of 'retro' stylings, 'Heart Like A Levee' is an elegant marriage of the intimate and the ambitious.

Review: The duo of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore first struck pop gold in 2008 with an extravagant sound that took sweet-tooth pop hooks and burnished them in a particularly '80s style radiance. 'Two Vines', partially recorded in Hawaii, sees the twosome building on their trademark kaleidoscopic flourishes, grabbing the assistance of luminaries and kindred spirits like Lindsey Buckingham and Wendy Melvolin to capture a sun-kissed and seductive sound as rich in melody and melancholy as it is in texture and production sheen. Reclaiming the pop landscape with artistic sleight-of-hand, 'Two Vines' is proof that this duo's pop smarts as as colourful as Steele's outlandish wardrobe.

Review: It's all change for this London psych quintet, following the departure of both synth player Alejandra Diez and producer Dan Carey since 2014's 'Join The Dots'. But they've taken these diversions as an impetus to expand their sound beyond the original motorik-tinged approach, embracing a darker and more song-based swagger that bears not only the atmospherics of Joe Meek and Morricone but the sullen post-punk rapture of the Bunnymen and the Chameleons. It's more than merely another chapter in the lineage of these heavy-lidded droogs, rather the moment at which their substance begins to decisively outweigh their (not inconsiderable) style.
