Review: While Optimo are undoubtedly men-for-all-seasons musically, as anyone who's seen them in action behind the decks will attest, they're often at their best when creating a mood, delving deep into their bulging record collections to showcase sludgy curiosities, dark electronics and intoxicating oddities. Pleasingly, it's this side of their multiple personalities that's explored on Dark Was The Night, their sixth commercially available mix CD. Predictably, it's a doozy, effortlessly joining the dots between the moody deep acid house of QX-1's "I Won't Hurt You", the pulsating industrial rhythms of Carter Tutti, the icy melodies and snowy rhythms of Recondite's "Cleric", and the paranoid dubstep of Kode 9 and Space Ape.

Review: 18 years ago this month, Hospital Records launched with a deep and jazzy D&B 12" from the Peter Nice Trio, whose members included London Elektricity founders Chris Goss and Tony Colman. Nearly two decades on, Hospital is one of the biggest brands in electronic music, having cornered the market in funky, soulful, accessible, party-hearty "festival D&B". To celebrate their achievements, they've put together an impressively expansive compilation. There are two discs of new and previously unreleased tracks from the label's growing roster of artists - think Nu:Tone, High Contrast, Camo & Crooked, Netsky and Logistics - plus a thrill-a-minute bonus mix from Tomahawk. Covering most of the junglist spectrum whilst remaining unflinchingly melodic, it's a fitting celebration.

Review: Mexican festival BPM may not be that well known to British music fans, but it's steadily building an impressive reputation. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that the festival has decided to launch its own tied-in DJ mix series. Crosstown Rebels regulars Art Department are at the helm on this first installment, delivering a smooth blend of wide-eyed tech-house, stripy t-shirt friendly powder house grooves, and the odd dash of heavily percussive pump (see Boris Horel's "Wild Combinations"). It's all well judged, with deeper moments (Ripperton's nicely organic take on Baikal's "Why Don't You?") nestling side by side with humid curiosities and the duo's own tactile take on heads-down house.

Review: Having firmly established himself as Hessle Audio's go-to man for boisterous blends of UK bass music and techno, Kevin McAuley has finally been given a chance to commit his DJ skills to CD. His fabricLive mix is as entertaining as you'd expect, serving up a heavily percussive fusion of robust techno, wide-eyed, rush-inducing "moments", skittish post-dubstep darkness, and plenty of those dubstep/techno hybrids he's long embraced. There's enough blissful, spine tingling moments amongst the darkness (see Pearson Sound's impeccable "Starbust") to keep things fresh, a smattering of bona fide scene anthems (MGUN, Pev & Kowton), and a sprinkling of forgotten or little-known gems (a rare outing for Speedy J's 1992 Euro-techno classic "Something For Your Mind").

Review: Via his long-running (if frustratingly sporadic) Elaste series of compilations, former Zombie Nation man Dompteur Mooner has carved himself a niche as a noted expert on the stranger side of disco, new wave and proto-techno. This fourth edition in the series offers more proof of his crate-digging skills. While there are a few well-known cuts present - Paradise Garage classic "Love Honey, Love Heartache" by Man Friday, and Mooner's own edit of Barbara Norris's "It's Heavy" - there are more obscure or little known gems. It's these - from the mystical disco of Charanjit Singh and Rinder & Lewis's unusual "Gluttony", to the deep analogue house of Disco D's "Beat It" and C Cat Trance's druggy "Shake It" - that make Elaste Volume 4 such an essential purchase.

Review: Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint shifted focus a little last year, moving back to the dancefloor following 2012's obsession with artist albums. As part of their master plan, they released nine (count 'em) vinyl-only remix singles. Here, those tracks are collected together on CD for the first time, presented in nerd-friendly chronological order. The material - a woozy, late night blend of sparse post-dubstep grooves, heads-down techno (see the reworks from Truncate and Robert Hood), leftfield rhythms (Lee Gamble) and evocative, anthemic moments (shouts to Marcel Dettmann, DJ Friction and Legowelt) - offers depth and variety, with the tracklist offering a veritable who's who of cutting edge underground producers. For the heads, there's also a clutch of previously unreleased remixes, including Tale of Us's most unusual and underground work to date.

Review: Further proof that German producer Nick Curly is now playing with the big boys is provided by this sumptuous two-disc mix-up for house goliaths Defected. Kicking off with the tongue-in-cheek "No Requests Intro" - a kind of cheery two-fingered salute to irritating punters - Curly proceeds to slowly shift through the gears, moving through a range of typically European deep and tech-house flavours, before reaching for the bumpin' beats and US garage classics on disc two. While the first disc is deep and appealing, it's this second disc - packed with hustlin' jams from Mood II Swing,

Review: Given that Kompakt's first Pop Ambient compilation dropped way back in 2001, it must now be one of the longest running series of its kind around. Certainly, there can be few interested in dreamy, emotion-rich beatless music that hasn't succumbed to its charms at some point over the last 13 years. This year's edition is, predictably, another fine installment. There's much to admire, from the intoxicating drone textures of Wolfgang Voigt's "Ruckverzauberung" (try saying that after a few glasses of German lager) and the shimmering brightness of Ulf Lohmann's "PCC", to the lone, drifting voice and pastoral soundscapes of Simon Scott's brilliant "Fur Betty".

Review: Despite the upsurge in interest in tropical rhythms and unlikely musical styles, Haiti Direct is arguably the first detailed exploration of the hitherto overlooked Haitian music scene. Compiled by tropical obsessive Hugo Mendez (he of Sofrito fame), Haiti Direct traces the development of the country's native music scene from 1960 to 1978. Sitting somewhere between calypso, Cuban rhythms, expansive Latin jazz and tropical blues (see DJet-X's brilliant "Jive Turkey"), Haitian music inhabits a space all of its own, soaking up influences and repackaging them in new and unusual styles. It makes for a thrilling and enjoyable listen, making Haiti Direct a near essential purchase for curious listeners and tropical addicts alike.
