Review: Adesse Versions returns to Numbers, following the runaway success of last year's Pride 12". "That's What Friends Are For" is a sturdy late-night builder, with the German producer gradually ratcheting up the tension via sleazy, spoken word vocals, carefully placed effects, and a muscular, Sound Factory style groove. The latter gets more space to breathe on the accompanying dub. Flip for the deeper, breezier "In The Sticks", which adds African percussion to a Ron Trent and Chez Damier-style house groove. The Afro influences and shimmering chords take pride of place on the alternative "No Kicks" mix.

Review: For the first time VIBRAPHONE RECORDS is releasing a record by an artist other than THE TRUE UNDERGROUND SOUND OF ROME. For such an exclusive event there could have not been a better choice than Italian DJ/PRODUCER, Nick Anthony SIMONCINO. For the production of this record, ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO (Sunset Islands) Simoncino uses a selection of strictly old school analog synthesizers, and drum machines, which takes you on a charming magical journey through the Mediterranean Sea with pulsating minimal deep bass lines, oneiric harmonic textures, exotic tom tom patterns, hypnotic sexy and catchy grove beats. ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO is a record that connects and combines the essential elements and spirit of deep house music along with providing its visionary future...

The A Side provides prime driving stuff while B Side take the mood to a more profound level.

Review: Art Crime was responsible for two of 2015's most overlooked 12" singles, the fine Renessence EP on Creme, and the Phonica released Obsession EP. Still Life marks his first appearance on the mighty Pinkman imprint, and contains four distinctive chunks of melodious deep house/Detroit techno fusion. The title track is particularly potent, featuring as it does a relentless piano riff, dreamy pads and unfussy house beats, but the more cosmic, heavily electronic "Distant" isn't far behind. Elsewhere, "Hectic" combines the rush-inducing bliss associated with early Italian deep house, with the rhythmic surge of techno, while "Dead Carnation" is simultaneously oddly bittersweet and deliciously hypnotic.

Review: French legend Ludovic Llorca is back under the Art Of Tones guise for the always impressive Local Talk. Acid soul funk? You bet! Take a listen to I "Just Can't (Get Over It)" and you'll believe there is such a thing. On the flip, the smooth and soulful groove continues on "Dirty Stories" which has an undeniably French touch about it, with good use wonky synths, emotive strings and SP1200 style vocal cut ups. Deepness in the vein of Pepe Braddock or Chateau Flight.

  3. Anyway (Christopher Rau remix Forte) (6:53)
Review: Bastian Volker aka Baaz has appeared on both Quintessentials and Slices Of Life, but his releases for Germany's Office Recordings are what caught our attention to his work. The man has put out two EP's and an album for the label, the latter being Red Souvenirs and apparently up for grabs on the old remix front at present. Corner dweller Dorisburg (Northern Electronics, Bossmusik) rewires "Endori" and comes away with an eerie house nugget filled with glitchy sonics and moody keys; SAM Downtown jacks up "Your Wardrobe" into a deep and spacey Chicago number; Smallville's Christopher Rau goes for the minimalistic touch on "Anyway", a lo-fi house cut for the warm up hours.

  3. Bazz & Iron Curtis - "KMS" (Soulphiction remix)
  4. Whatabouttalkabout
Review: Baaz's fledgling Office Recordings returns with its second release and a second edition of the What About Talk About series. "Owl's Theme" sees Baaz at the buttons, swiftly aligning to a vigorous bassline that provides the momentum whilst the Berliner shows his palette of classicist 909 rhythms and pumping piano chords. Complementing this, "Those Things" sounds more vibrant and colourful, with the drums less prominent amidst the magic inducing textures. On the flip Soulphiction turns in a wondrous remix of the Baaz and Iron Curtis track "K.M.S.", all glowering, emotive synth flourishes and subtle kicks, whilst "Whatabouttalkabout" showcases Baaz's talent for more esoteric sounds, eschewing the need for kicking drums to focus on a luscious electronic arrangement.

Review: Lars Bartkuhn is the co-founder (alongside brother Marek Bartkuhn and Yannick Elverfeld) of revered Frankfurt label Needs Music. The Nomad EP features the absolutely sublime "Nomand (Full Experience)" a bittersweet and emotive journey through techno-soul that's reminiscent of Jazzanova via John Beltran; this track is pure ecstasy and when that Spanish guitar comes in, it's one of those 'wow' moments! The reprise of the track is pure bliss, focusing in on that guitar sound and some immersive ambient atmosphere. On the flip we've also got the uplifting deep house vibes of "Tokyo Burning" which sounds more on the Ron Trent tip; this one's great too!

Review: It's always unwise to judge a label that's still taking its' first steps, but Banoffee Pies has barely put a foot wrong since launching a couple of years back. Here, the Bristol-based imprint continues with its' successful split release formula, gathering together a quartet of tracks from up-and-coming producers. Beaner kicks things off with the bumpin', low-slung deep house grooves and delay-laden guitar samples of "It Takes Two", before Philou Louzolo raises the temperature with the looped horn samples and thumping beats of "Alter Ego". Flip for the dreamy Balearic house goodness of Ron Wilson's "Albino Turtle", and the bongo-laden, after-party deep house shuffle of Mome's "Assatta".

Review: Hailing from Australia but based in East London, Rohan Bell-Towers has become one of the artists most readily-associated with Marvin and Valentino's Public Possession label. I'm Coming Up is the seventh PP release bearing the Bell-Towers name and the title cut sees him whipping up some forthright club tackle. There are plenty of sliced up soul-enriching samples licking about the jam, but the focus is on straight up house rhythms that scream out for peak time play. There's a more esoteric lilt at work on B-side cut "I'm Always Down For You", which slows things down a touch and works in some choice vocal choppery and a bassline to die for and is complemented by a remix from rising talent Kris Baha.

Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

If you checked Byron's prior 2016 releases for Sound Signature and Wild Oats, you'll know to expect a diverse range of styles all produced with consummate expertise and that's exactly what we have on the Euphoria EP. There's some dusty hip hop joints like on "Intro", Coming To Detroit" and "The Essence" but there's also some real proper deep house. Like when we get treated with the wonderful "The Love Below" which is reminiscent of Fresh 'N Low and the rather KDJ sounding collaboration with S3A "Nights In Tokyo".

"Juok" strips things back to percussion and an ominous sub driving tension before the big kick drum release. Finally we land with "Levare" that adopts a classic dancehall/breakbeat arrangement for its structure while accordions woozily wheeze gently in the background and dubby horn textures float heavily in the foreground.

Review: Cain has already appeared once before for the Highlife Edits label, the Huntleys & Palmers offshoot that has been significantly promising since entering the scene not too long ago. The Scotsman returns with "Bakhtin" on the A-side, dripping its neat tribal percussion over a steady house beat that spews a mystical sort of energy from its cinematic synths. "Gordito", the opener on the flipside, is a much nastier affair, one with a dastardly bassline ready to bounce with each kick of the 4/4, while "Cajal" strips it all right down to a halt, offering instead a desolate, Eastern jam that recalls a lonesome night in the desert. A fine EP, and a highly recommended one, indeed....

Review: Carlo Troja aka Don Carlos was active during Italy's golden days, the years that saw the likes of Beppe Loda and the rest of the 'cosmic' crew pave the way for what was to then become house music as we know it in Europe. Although he was an influential DJ as far back as the 1970s, Troja only released his first EP in 1991, the beautiful Alone that is reissued here with the help of Groovin. The Paradise mix in any house-heads dream come true, a bass-heavy club nugget that contains just the right balance between funky and deep; the Flute house version adds in a layer of beautiful chirps for added sexiness; and the Sax Ambient mix is perhaps the best moment on here, keeping those starry synths well in the mix alongside cool piano keys. Hot and warmly recommended.

Review: Last year, Bastien Carrara joined forces with Rawthenticity boss Fulbert on Mont Cenis Tapes 01, a cassette of collaborative explorations in the experimental end of dusty deep house. This outing for Funkineven's Apron imprint marks his solo debut, and it's something of an action-packed hit. A-side "Summer Breeze" is something of a slammer, with dreamy pads and swirling synthesizer chords riding a thumping, distorted drum machine groove. "Diskother" sees him change tack to deliver a loved-up, pitched-down instrumental '80s soul edit, before he brings out the drum machines once more on the tactile, late night oddness of leftfield deep house gem "Kinda Late".

His unmistakable vocals are supported by Blaze's timeless production across all five brilliant versions. "Baby Love (Asia Iman)" is full of uplifting house pianos, brass section and swing fuelled rhythms, as does "Elan Imari" but for many its all about the dub version which gets properly deep and Baby Donovan's Mix which gets more tough and street sounding.

Review: Man of many pseudonyms Natal Zaks brings his Central project to Dekmantel, with the first of a series of EPs entitled Political Dance. It's an expansive affair, with the Danish producer delivering a quintet of tracks that meld distinctive Detroit techno, early US deep house, broken beat and deep space ambient influences into attractive new shapes. Highlights abound, from the rolling, loved-up grooves of the starry "Keep Love On Me", and Motor City deep house shuffle of "Body Issue", to the horizontal bliss of "Longest Way Between Two Points", and tech-jazz swing of standout "This Is Hand". Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: Natal Zaks is a talented chap. To date, he's released a large amount of very good material, under numerous pseudonyms, for a wide variety of labels. Here he returns to Dekmantel with the second part of the Political Dance series, under the now familiar Central guise. Just like its' predecessor, it's a deliciously positive, melodious and atmospheric affair. The brilliant "Detour King" sounds like Space Dimension Controller, Vincent Floyd and Boyd Jarvis jamming on Mars, while "Political Dance" is a deliciously loved-up journey into early New Jersey deep house, with some distinctively spacey flourishes to boot. Zaks also doffs a cap to ambient house era intelligent techno on the luscious "Convenient Departures".
