  1. Silver Satin (5:22)
  2. Runaway Love (4:58)
Review: Outside of record collecting circles, few have heard of Axis's 1984 cut "Silver Satin" - though given that it was only ever released as a private press single (some 200 or so copies were apparently pressed), that's hardly surprising. Here, new record label Ice City gives it the reissue treatment. The track is a brilliantly spacey chunk of slap-bass propelled, P-funk era boogie full of eyes closed guitar solos, impassioned vocals and swirling synthesizer chords. On the flipside you'll find a previously unreleased track, "Runaway Love", which was written, produced and performed by main main Byron Bordeaux in 1986. Closer to '80s soul but with guitars and bass reminiscent of electrofunk-era jazz-funk jams, it's almost better than the A-side, and that's saying something. In other words, this is an essential reissue.

  1. Back To You (2:54)
  2. Don't Let Love Walk Out In Us (T Groove mix) (3:47)
Review: Paul Craver's smooth strain of jazzed-out house music has been MIA since 2013, and we're glad to hear some of it back on our charts with such fervor. The man returns to Sundae Soul Recordings with two fine-ass cuts, the first of which is an edit of a certain track called "Back To You" (unnamed for legal reasons), and it's one of those seductive soul ballads that sounds just perfect on the dancefloor. On the flip, T Groove drops a mix of "Don't Let Love Walk Out In Us" and, once again, we have a lovely blend of disco-leaning soul on our hands - perfect for just about any situation involving lovers and the moonlight. Gorgeous.

Review: Following the success of 1980 disco classic "I Like What You're Doing To Me", Young & Company ended up in a long contract dispute with their label, Brunswick. Co-producer Buddy Hankerson used the time to record a set of tracks with a new collection of musicians, the Shine Band. Sadly, none of these recordings were released at the time, making this Time Capsule 7" from the Super Disco Edits camp something of a red-hot exclusive. Rescued from reel-to-reel tapes found in Hankerson's brother's loft, both "Try Your Love" and "Close To You" are superb. While the latter - a leisurely chunk of boogie-soul that sits somewhere between two other Hankerson produced acts, Aurra and Slave - is impressive, it's the livelier, jauntier A-side (very Young & Company) that makes this 7" so desirable.

  1. Take Time (vocal) (4:40)
  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

  2. Give Me A Reason (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) (6:54)
  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

  4. Shelter Me (7:20)
Review: Late Nite Tuff Guy bursts through RSD 2016 with a hot selection of disco-flavoured house chuggers, and we'd been waiting on a comeback from both the dude and label - all boxes ticked from our side. "Hold Tite" is the perfect summer blazer, all luscious vocals and dripping beats, and "I Don't Like Acid" takes that same soulful spirit but strips the groove right down to a bopping little rhythm that is likely to be enjoyed by both hip-hop and house fans alike. The flip's "One Night In A Disco" is a sample-heavy, string-infused floor-melter, whereas "Shelter Me" goes all balearic and feet-up - the perfect lounge cut.

Review: Following excellent releases from Skatebard, Les Crocodiles and Lunar Concept amongst many others, Pleasure Unit turn to Cut The Rug crew member Mike Misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. "Do What You Need" sports a Metro Area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. The dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is B2 jam "Love Talk". With its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it's an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

Review: Animals On Psychedelics snaps up a debut appearance from Miro Sundaymusiq for its second release, delving further into the label's mission statement of "the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music." Miro opens up proceedings with "This Is Not Butter Carolin", a twinkling roller with subtle disco undertones and a cheeky nod to electro rubbed into the rhythm. So far, so psychedelic. "Creamy Dreams" is no slouch in the cosmic department either, loaded with bubbling arpeggios aimed skywards and using a sprightly set of drums to help the mellifluous tones along.

  2. Natasha Kitty Katt - "Cosmic Bitch" (7:17)
Review: Edinburgh's Ghetto Disco Records are back with their second release, a label run by Natasha Kitty Katt and her father. When two creative minds join and bring a modern take on disco, this is the result. Kitty Katt & Twisted Soul Collective 'have aligned forces to bring you an array of ideas, thoughts, sounds and feelings.' Definitely for the disco dancers, you can visualise grooving to this number under a mirror ball. "Twisted Katt" on the A side brings the funk, complete with liquid bassline and breakbeats (hear the drummer get wicked) assisted by a tough four the floor beat for dancefloor dynamics. On the flip is "Cosmic Bitch" with its Salsoul Orchestra style strings section looped up to perfection, over another reliable house rhythm and some nice filter sweeps.

Review: Canoe is the new label from Nyra that finds him indulging his personal musical preferences while still retaining his club-ready tendencies already established on labels such as Never Learnt, Elastic Dreams and more. For the second Canoe release Noface has been invited along to deliver the A-side track, and it's a killer slice of jazz-laced bumping house replete with sax and vibes. Where "Young Larry" plays things fast and loose, Nyra's "Sisco Visco" on the B-side is an unabashed disco burner with a tight-as-you-like beat and plenty of filter-swept samples to keep the party sizzling.

Review: The UK's favourite disco, boogie and house explorers Midnight Riot serve up another compilation entitled 'Le Spank' featuring a host of legendary producers from the scene, alongside some of the hottest rising stars from the underground. There really are some great jams on here: NYC act Odyssey receive brilliant extended edit by Glaswegian legend Al Kent on "Inside Out", a neon lit boogie down version of Tonbe's "Saturday" by London duo Yam Who? plus a deep down and dirty remake of the legendary Detroit anthem "Shari Vari" by Uomnamas: remixed by Hifi Sean and being the standout track on the B side.

Coming with extended unreleased versions, the originals were collected from sought after EPs, an obscure compilation LP and fiishes with a never before released song - this is history. Licensed and remastered for aural pleasure.

"You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. Review: With artists like DJ Nature and Admin taking Boogie Cafe's 'Black' series on a deep house ride, it was high time they presented you with the second in the 'Neon' series. These will focus on new, hot-of-the-press, original disco numbers. Rising star Saucy Lady drops a brand new boogie-down jam with "Together"; This is an up-tempo percussion heavy disco treat, featuring U-Key in the mix. On the flip, keyboard impresario E. Review: REPRESS ALERT! Best Record Italy take the time machine all the way back to 1979 to revisit the wonderful Italo-Disco delights of Adolf Stern, whose "More... I Like It" represents the strangest end of the genre as it was taking shape. With heavily processed vocals injecting some serious strangeness into the chirpy disco backdrop, it's the kind of track to turn heads without a doubt. "Twenty Seven" on the B-side is equally magical in its capturing of the era, with the more obvious surface elements underpinned by a truly intoxicating line in synth arpeggios. Once again Best comes up trumps refreshing the history of Italian music of all shapes and sizes.

Spearheaded by Stuart Leath, Emotional Rescue is a label committed to unearthing forgotten gems and giving them the exposure they richly deserve, with all releases officially licensed by the artist and remastered in full. This 12" sees two classic tracks by the world music collective Suns of Arqa take pride of place. Incorporating elements of raga and dub, "Brujo Magic" is a much more straightforward dancefloor number than its description would suggest, with its rolling bassline and vocoder effects fusing irresistibly with its psyche-rock styles. On the B-Side, "Ananta Snake Dance" combines traditional Indian percussion and harmonium with conventional drumming to create something completely unique. A strong start to what will no doubt be an indispensable label.

Review: For the latest volume in their Ltd Dance Edition series of 12" singles, Analog Africa has decided to mine the back catalogue of Trinidadian Afro-Caribbean fusionist Brother Valentino. On the A-side you'll find sought-after 1978 single "Stay Up Zimbabwe", a passionate plea for change recorded amidst the bloody civil war between Ian Smith's white minority government and the black majority. Musically, it sits somewhere between Afrobeat, soca and disco, with heavy horn lines rising above a killer groove. On the flipside you'll find the equally as impressive "Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution)", a killer 1980 calypso-disco workout laden with jazzy guitar solos, William Onyeabor style Moog lines, extended drum breaks and typically punchy horns.

Review: On its initial vinyl and download release late last year, Cherry was proclaimed by critics as being one of Chromatics' strongest albums to date. Given that the Portland band have now released seven acclaimed sets, that's some claim. This first "deluxe" CD edition adds previously unheard cuts and alternative versions, but it's the core set - featured on the first half of the CD - that really sparkles. As you might expect, it's not only full of the atmospheric, slow motion synth-pop with which they made their name, but also a swathe of cuts heavily influenced by the cinematioc soundtrack work Jonny Jewel has been concentrating on since their previous full-length dropped back in 2012. In other words, it's quite possibly Chromatics' most evocative and rounded set to date.

Review: While it was Cliff Martinez who eventually wrote and produced the score for acclaimed movie Drive, it was Jonny Jewel and the Italians Do it Better crew who were originally slated to do it. It's perhaps fitting, then, that Jewel has decided to celebrate the film's fifth anniversary by putting together this brilliant "companion piece". Like the brilliant Symmetry album of a few years back, it's effectively an alternative soundtrack, featuring a combination of soundtrack style compositions originally slated to appear in the movie, and Italians Do it Better material written, recorded and released in the same period. It goes without saying that it's a stunning collection of tracks.

Review: Last year, Italians Do It Better's premier "mystery act" Twisted Wires - recently revealed to be Richard Durham and IDIB main man Jonny Jewel - returned to action for the first time in seven years. Half Lives is the duo's debut album, though it's more like a longer-than-average EP. It includes a combination of fresh songs and previously released material (the jangly, bubbling synth-pop-goes-electrofunk brilliance of "Struck Twice", which is also featured in the even better "Club Mix" form, and the melancholic slo-mo brilliance of "0000"); throughout, the set brilliantly joins the dots between darkwave, Italo-disco, synth-funk and the kind of glistening, radio-friendly fare that Jonny Jewel, in particular, does so well.

Review: Given how long David Mancuso continued to run Loft parties in NYC, it's perhaps unsurprising that the crew behind the Loft Classics compilation series have yet to run out of music to showcase. This 16th volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together a mixture of stone cold dancefloor classics (Dinosaur L's "Go Bang!", Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa", Loose Joints' "Is It all Over My Face"), lesser-known gems (the dubbed-out house brilliance of "Notice Me", proto-house oddity "Instrumental Voice" and surging disco epic that is "212 N 12th") and hazy, laidback groovers (The Congos' Lee Perry produced "Congoman", the jazz-tinged soul warmth of "Shifting Gears").
