Fayah Pon Babylon! EP (white vinyl 12" + stickers)
Cat: FAYAH 001. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Crosby - "Bad Mind Character" (Ruffftec & Thebanktella original) (4:23)
  2. Crosby - "Bad Mind Character" (Violinbwoy remix) (4:32)
  3. Crosby - "Bad Mind Character" (Blue Hill remix) (4:18)
  4. Longfingah - "Caught Inna Dem System" (Ruffftec original) (3:58)
  5. Longfingah - "Caught Inna Dem System" (Subactive remix) (4:01)
  6. Longfingah - "Caught Inna Dem System" (Phantom Warrior remix) (4:44)
Review: For this debut release, the Munich-based crew behind Fayah Chords has turned to two experienced vocal talents: South African dancehall mic man Crosby and veteran toaster Longfingah. Crosby delivers a trademark vocal on the skittish but soulful, reggae-influenced dubstep pressure of "Bad Mind Character", which was produced by Fayah Chords crewmembers Ruffftec [sic] and Thebanktella. It's accompanied by two jaunty digital reggae reworks by Violbwoy and Blue Hill respectively. Ruffftec returns to the controls on Longfingah's cheery, breezy and soulful dubstep bumper "Caught Inna Dem System". In this instance, the killer remix comes from Phantom Warrior, who weighs in with an interpretation that looks to ragga-fuelled drum & bass for inspiration.

Review: It's the Dizzee album many of us have been waiting over 10 years for. Forthright, heavy, inventive and barbed with incisive observations and wry humour. Don't expect many big sing-alongs, don't come crying for big pop cameos, Dizzee has returned to his outpost in 'da corner' and honed some of the most provocative tracks of his career. Highlights include the orchestral theatrics of "I Ain't Gonna Lie", the flute-snapping "Ghost" and the pure venom of "Sick A Dis". The futuristic, bass-heavy beats carved by the likes of Valentino Khan, Cardo and Paul Salva ensure Dizzee rides in style.

Mad Night (12")

  1. Mad Night (4:17)
  2. Melkweg Bass (4:40)
  3. Medium Core (4:40)
Review: No one does it like Joker; that wry balance of supreme funk and dirty, aggy, ugly bass energy, with one hand he's caressing you, the other he's slapping you raw. This EP is no exception... "Mad Night" is a furious piece of bass energy with riff that fluctuates so hard it feels like its jumping off the record, "Melkweg Bass" follows suit with a P-funk lead, another grave-waking bass and one of the best one-word vocal sample you'll hear on a bass record this year. Finally the wryly titled "Medium Core" closes with more of a venomous sandpaper bass texture while retaining all the purple finesse we know and love him for. Powermoves.

  4. Nurve - "Silentium" (3:52)
  5. Nurve - "Amazon Bleep" (4:51)
  6. Nurve - "Best To Just Ride It" (4:29)
Review: Flexing across his two more prominent aliases, Raff AKA Demon AKA Macabre Unit AKA Nurve b2b's himself hard in the kisser at the behest of professor Nomine. Three tunes a-side, his 140 dubstep-inspired Macabre Unit guise takes the lead with drama and dark humour; "Darth Vader" is a theatrical skanker, "Mash Up Da Place" is a woozy, toxic jam with a bassline that spirals into paranoia while "Man Up" gets all stiff upper-lip with its rising bass hook that flips between textures with a nervous twitch. Raff's slower, tech-inspired Nurve constructions complete the story with glacial glee... "Silentium" is a sparse, deep space twist on halftime and alien jungle, "Amazon" is a swampy triplet swinging riddim while "Best To Just Ride It" sends us packing off to space on a rocket of off-grid drums and raw man-eating bass. Immense.

  2. Black Puppet
Review: Dat Pressure keep digging back into the archives of main man Noodles with some of the highly sought after heat that has been fetching silly money on the second hand market. When it comes to the darker end of the garage spectrum, some of these jams are right up there with the best and so getting a chance to lay your hands on a stone cold jam like "99" is a dream come true for any true 2-step head. Beats and bass just don't come sicker than this. "Black Puppet" meanwhile lays down the law as far as wobble bass goes, proving just how pioneering Noodles was with his work as Groove Chronicles.

  4. Dr Hugo - "Warrior" (5:36)
  5. Polonis - "Slice Roll 3" (3:58)
  6. Sir Hiss - "Blood Diamond" (3:58)
Review: This debut release from the Dream Eater label is little less than a statement of intent. It features cuts from no less than six members of the extended crew crammed onto one action-packed 12". Proc Fiskal kicks things off with the thursting sub-bass, cut-up hip-hop yelps and full-throttle grime beats of "Come Here", before Charlux shows his melodious side on the jaunty goodness of "Riposte". There's some ghostly synths and aggressive grooves from Nights, a deep dive into sparse and heavy dubstep territory from Dr Hugo, and a touch of glacial, post-grime brilliance from Polonis. Best of all, though, is Sir Hiss's "Blood Diamond", which effortlessly underpins marimba style melodies with a punchy, post-dubstep beat.

  1. Slimzee Vs As.If Kid - "Judgement Day" (4:16)
  2. As.If Kid - "Shooter" (DnB mix - DJ Garna remix) (10:01)
Review: Following their razor edge four-tracker earlier this summer Rinse co-founder and foundation grime pioneer Slimzee and new partner in crime As.If.Kid maintain the heat as they declare "Judgement Day" once and for all. Bell-chiming brutality with a rugged slo-mo jungle charm, there's almost a rock-like looseness to the drums and grunting bass as it rolls out with unique energy. Flip for a remix from fellow OG DJ Garna who reinforces As.If.Kid's "Shooter" with an authentic jungle rinse-out.

  1. Life Through Sepia (6:26)
  2. 68 (4:45)
Review: With the label's 50th release celebrations done and dusted, Osiris Music begins a new chapter. They're keeping quiet about the identity of the producer behind The Things They Left Behind, though the smart money's on it being another alias of boss man Simon Shreeve (who released a track under the title as Kryptic Minds some years back). "Life Through Sepia" is quietly creepy and hugely atmospheric, with meandering spoken word samples, horror movie chords and poignant strings rising above a deep and bass-heavy dubstep groove. The freshly baked late night vibes continue on the flip, where "68" offers an attractive and dubbed-out fusion of skunk-infected beats, clandestine noises and contemplative electronic melodies.

  1. Vibes Deh Bout (5:31)
  2. Dedicated (5:32)
  3. Unite (5:55)
Review: For much of his career, publicity-shy producer Tremble has operated on Osiris offshoot Ruff Cut. Here he goes it alone on freshly minted imprint Safari Art, in the process delivering a trio of atmospheric, floor-friendly dusbtep workouts. The title track sets the tone, with spine-chilling audio textures and echo-laden rasta-man vocal snippets enveloping a deep sub bassline and rolling, hot-stepping beats. Flip for "Dedicated", a more straightforward chunk of tribal-infused dubstep science, and the percussively layered heaviness that is peak-time cut "Unite". Like the other tracks on the EP, it combines the producer's usual deep and creepy vibe with some seriously soulful reggae vocal samples.

Review: New Zealand sub-loaders Truth unleash their fourth album Wilderness Of Mirrors to wax on their own DDD imprint. Taking some of the album's many highlights and reframing them into a sizzling six pack of sonic contrast and grimy gully, it's beef from the off as Strikez gets smoky on "Monster" and "D Double E" flexes bear murderation over an industrial strength before the title track takes us deeper into the abyss. Flip for the swaggering grunter "The Moon" (one of Truth's heaviest bassline cuts to date), T Man's militant preaches on "Soldier" and the lush velvet Portisheadian soul of "Inside Your Thoughts". Welcome to the wilderness...
