Party Edits
Cat: BUMPE 000. Rel: 30 Nov 23
Sample This Piano
DJ Spun vs The Jack Squad - "Track 2"
Can You Feel The Beat (DJ Spun Bass mix)
Acid Man (edit)
Review: Spun's Party Edits is real catnip for DJs who like to work the floor hard. Next up, the scalpel maestro, DJ and West Coast legend lands on a new sub-label from Blkmarket Music label with another hard-hitting 12" that really brings the party. First up is the iconic 'Sample This Piano' with new low sling beats but the haunting lead melodies left in place. DJ Spun Vs The Jack Squad's 'Track 02' is an ice cold minimal house cut with lo-fi pads and amercing vibe and 'Can You Feel The Beat' (DJ Spun Bass mix) is a trippy analogue jam with dusty breaks and emotive vocal hooks. 'Acid Man' closes with a raw ghetto feel. A fine start to life for this new label, then.

Review: Aussie larrikin DJ WHPRSNPR is back on his very own Nerang Recordings with a motley crew of upstarts on this one. Fittingly titled Freaky Friends 2, it features DJ Swagger with some off-kilter UK bass on 'Hotice Water' and Low Tape with the NSFW booty bass of 'So Delicious' on the A side, followed over on the flip by Ole Mic Odd's sci-fi electro funk jam 'In The House' and Berlin's Nasty King Krule doing his best Dopplereffekt impression on 'Stop Talkin Boy' among others.

Review: Incy wincy Walid El Barbir dons his DJ Web guise for this stark set of analogue fusions. Blurring the lines between every genre this side of 1990s hardcore, Traditions 16 is a melting pot exploration that brings in elements of new romantic pumps ('Nos Noctium Dominarium'), swampy big beat drama ('Chaosophia777') dense, acidic new beat ('Extinction For The Psychic Sustenance') sleazy rock ('616 The Number Of The Beat') and plenty more in between. A truly unique experience, if you enjoyed Wilid's output as Les Points, you'll be all over this.

Review: Mechatronica are a Berlin-based promoter, label and collective, whose main screed is enthusiasm for the joining of man and machine. Driven by a passion for the connection between humans, mechanics and electronics, their parties center on such cultural centres as Sameheads and Griessmuhle. DL-MS is their latest nonhuman addition to the roster; a dystopian electro soundscape in which not even the minutest cluster of organic life can escape its artificially intelligent clutches.

Ambient Freak (4:00)

Blue Blob (5:01)
Clean The Stylus (Ashley Break) (4:07)
Review: The next electro exploration from the infamous DMX Krew comes in the form of 'Blue Bob', which scours the genre's less bangerific backwaters. The four tracks on this new EP her for Further Electronix centre on everything from the weezy, to the gaseous, to the strange. 'Ambient Freak' does what it says on the tin, working as one of Krew's most minimal cuts to date; its noir synth strings and piquey melodic motifs sound like the soundtrack to a space-age murder mystery, as we try to decipher who killed Zog with what; a laser-blaster? a lightsaber? a photon torpedo? 'Clean The Stylus' and are 'Blue Blob' further sci-fi pleasantries, with icy blue notes and propulsive FM basses gluing it all together.

Review: From Permanent vacation to Hypercolour, Furthur Electronix to Under The Radar, Ed DMX's music pops up all over the place these days. That's primarily because the electro hit machine just can't stop producing pure gold from his gear, and this latest joint on Peggy Gou's Gudu label proves the point - his second for the label after 2019's Don't You Wanna Play? EP. From the jubilant vintage techno sound of the title track to the cheeky 90s house bounce of 'Altered Chords', 'U Ain't Really Down's wild-eyed jack to the joyous machine soul of out and out tribute tracks 'I Love Juan', this is DMX Krew laying some major influences bare and making magic out of his pure passion.

Review: Ed Upton - the electro gift that keeps on giving. For someone so prolific, the man like DMX Krew never misses and it's frankly astounding. Take this new clutch of tracks for a new label entitled Operation Madness, which leads in with the synthetic fantasy ride of 'Trigger Warning' before sliding into the sprightly 80s flex of 'Local Off' and on to the quintessential machine funk of 'Software User Guide'. The styles are distinct, but the quality is just immeasurable. In these times of electro abundance, it's not easy to make well worn tropes truly sing, but DMX Krew sounds as rich with inspiration as ever, and there's a generous six portions of this goodness on offer on this fulsome 12".

Parasite (6:27)
Tree In Space (4:09)
Unbelief (6:25)
Meltdown (4:18)
Review: You can't get more reliable than Ed DMX frankly. The veteran artist can do all electro styles imaginable and all with equal elan. This month, for example, is dropping a disco and boogie fried 12" as well as this more classically inclined electro outing on the fine Shipwrec label out of the Netherlands. 'Parasite' has a perfectly elastic and rubbery baseline under celestial melodies, 'Tree In Space' is a twitchy rhythm and 'Unbelief' then settles into a deeper groove with smeared synth chords. 'Meltdown' ends with a darker and more atmospheric sound for the late night hours.

Still Got It (dub) (3:51)
Paranoia (4:01)
Cold (dub) (4:09)
Review: The legendary DMX Krew is as accomplished as they come when talking about electro innovators. Each time he steps out he proves that and this new one proves it, quite knowingly so given the title. The title track 'Still Got It' is a stomping electro sizzler with lashing of disco goodness and a catchy vocal hook. The dub fleshes out the low end while 'Paranoia' picks up the pace on the flip. It's a high speed cut with dazzling melodic sequences riding up and down the scale. Cold then shuts down with boogie energy and more lush Casino keys.

Jupiter Jack (Jupiter mix) (5:17)
Review: Since making his bow as Donald Dust six years ago, Tom Banks has codified a signature sound rich in jacking, Ron Hardy style drum tracks, surging Italo-disco melodies, late '80s European house sounds and 21st century nu-Italo tropes. All these ingredients - and more - can be heard on his latest EP for Bordello a Parigi. Opener 'Nausea', for example, audibly doffs a cap to Koto and Bobby Orlando, while the more percussive, sweat-soaked 'Sick Your Own' remix of the same track provides an energetic, peak-time ready alternative. There are two mixes, too, of 'Jupiter Jack': the new beat-meets-Italo-disco throb of the 'Groovy Mix' and the breathless mid-80s Chicago house flex of the 'Jupiter Mix'. Chiming, synth-pop-goes-electro number 'Noise in the Stairwell' completes a fine package.

Programmable Organism (5:31)
Entity From Tetraspace (4:58)
Tachyon Intelligence (3:59)
Computronium (6:03)
Review: It's no wonder Dopplereffekt named their latest EP 'Inifinite Tetraspace'. For starters, a tetrahedron is a 3D triangular pyramid of equal lengths per side. A sine wave, meanwhile, is in auditory form considered the purest, most basic sound - it is also the graph produced by plotting all the ratio points between two sides of a triangle. The logical conclusion is this: infinite tetraspace might be considered the ultimate form of repetitive sound, carrying on forever, triangulating constantly in all directions, never ceasing. For all its vivid imaginings, Dopplereffekt's dualistic, stereo-effected sound carries on in full force on their latest EP for Curtis Electronix, tetra-scribing four icy, unsettling entities that may only be encountered in this special extra-conscious zone.

Eukaryotic Chromosomes (3:35)

Mitosis (6:07)
Review: Detroit electro legends Dopplereffekt return to Leisure System for their fourth release on the Berlin based imprint. Athanatos is named after the angel of the planet Mercury in ancient Greek mythology, but that isn't so much the theme. Here the duo again explore subjects related to genetic conditions and chromosomal influences that define mortality across the EP's five tracks. After the brooding sonic landscapes of the title track , it's classic Mitchell & Nhan all the way on the majestic electronic funk of "Hayflick Limit" while devilishly enchanting slow burners like "Telomere" or "Mitosisin" lock you in with their hypnotic grasp. Raster-Noton founders Carsten Nicolai (who did the artwork) and Olaf Bender are said to have collaborated with the pair on this release.

Stalking Merlin (5:46)
Review: Now this is the kind of house we live for. Mired in the rawness of post-punk and making use of never-heard-before drums and basses, DOTT hails from the underrepresented dance scene extant in Bangkok, Thailand. Her unusual palette reflects a slapdash vibe that could only come from an individual mind. The tracks on 'Deep Soi', were they to act as sonic guides for deep-sea adventures, cover every depth from abyssal trenches to sprawling coral reefs. 'Stalking Merlin' is our highlight: nothing more is needed in this minimal, grainy, chromatic stew.

Review: Milan-based label The Villains Inc. is back this week with a new EP by Dr Boomer, a collaboration between label owner G. Aquilini (Gab.Gato) and Jack Bags aka La Sabbia. Time To Go Back begins with the cybernetic body beats of 'Man Of The Future' reminiscent of early Model 500, followed the heads-down, four-to-the-floor stomp of 'No Permission'. Over on the flip, the brooding dystopian electro themes continue on 'Darkness' and the computer funk of 'The Bad Place'.

Track 4 (6:46)
Review: Dubtil has only very recently launched his own superb new label Infrequent. He did so with a top new EP but has clearly been hard at work in the studio because this outing on Ruere is another doozy. It comes on nice spattered vinyl and has four untitled tunes. The first is a warm one with pads swirling round to bring colour to the tech beats, then the second has a more urgent mission through the cosmos with its wispy pads and tight, twanging bass and prickly drums. On the flip is the more stripped back and minimal roller of track three and then the compelling rubbery rhythms and futuristic pad work of the final cut.

Stop & Stall (6:41)
First In Motion (4:50)
Specialized In Anything (6:38)
Lowest Perceived Legitimacy (7:04)
Review: French electro innovator DynArec is on a rampant run at the moment, with new releases popping up nigh-on everywhere right now. It makes sense to see him link up with Cultivated Electronics, one of the most on-point electro labels in action right now. 'Stop & Stall' opens proceedings with a limber and lithe romp through pinging, shuddering leads and hard as nails drum thumps. 'First In Motion' has a 4/4 strut which aligns it more with Italo, although the synths are far from retro endeavours. 'Specialized In Anything' is a sinewy workout which nods to the early 00s electroclash era and 'Lowest Perceived Legitimacy' slips into something sleeker, making for a varied and highly effective dispatch of machine funk from a singular voice.

Review: Twilight Expanse is the latest reissued EP from New York producer Ebeats, who originally released this great breaksy classic in the early noughties. A crude minimalist exploration in breaks and dub effects, we've got the ultra-wally zoner 'Helion', which is like a hyper-compressed version of an ambient Aphex perambulator, and the comparatively jazzy and surreal 'Twilight Expanse'. On the B also come remixes by Radioactive Man and Voicedrone, which are far less playful, but make up for it with a modern heat which still respects the original's direction.

My House (On The Nile) (long version) (10:27)
Review: Anyone who has seen one of Egyptian Lover's riotous live shows will confirm the role that classic cut "I Need a Freak" plays in proceedings. During performances, he attempts to get female members of the audience going by altering the lyrics to suit the occasion - a tactic that usually gets a rapturous response. Despite being recorded in the '80s (and eventually released in 1994), the track has lost none of its energy or appeal; it should be in the collection of any genuine electro enthusiast. There's another treat on the flip in the shape of the rarely seen extended version of 1984 cut "My House (On The Nile)", which is every bit as essential as the A.

Review: Egyptian Lover is celebrating 40 years of releasing music in 2024 AMD 'Emotions' is the first track from his upcoming album titled 1987. It's a classic 80s inspired west-coast electro style cut - a style that Egyptian Lover is pretty much responsible for creating, harking back to his classic material like 'Egypt, Egypt' and 'I Need a Freak', his use of the Roland 808 along with Kraftwerk and hip-hop influences making the artist synonymous with the origin of the electro sound. Also included is 'Emotional' which is the instrumental version of the title track. For the B-Side 'Dirty Passionate Yell' is featured again, along with the instrumental version (Dirty Music). Review: It's 2016 and Egyptian Empire Records is still going strong over thirty years form its first 12". It's creator and master, Egyptian Lover, is as active now as he was on the launch of his timeless and genre-defining 1984 LP, and this new remix of "Killin' It" shows us that the man hasn't changed a pair of socks since the mid 1980's - the tune is a dirty, utterly on-point electro scorcher with twisted vocals and that eerie, inimitable sound of the Nile. "Tryin To Tell Ya" is another mean-spirited, highly strung electro dominator with a powerful bassline to blow your jaw firmly out of place. A huge 12" and one that will become rarer and rarer as the years go by, so you know what that means...

Review: Still no one makes electro quite like the OG that is The Egyptian Lover. He helped pioneer the genre back in the day and for proof look no further than 'Franky Girl' from way back in 1986. It still very much sounds future today with its ice-cold drum machine sounds, creepy, mystic bass lines and sci-fi synth leads all topped off with his own inimitable mic work. Extended and album versions are included with the flipside featuring 'We The Freaks'. It's a more crisp and raw cut but one that still makes you want to pop that body on the dance floor.

The Egyptian Lover & Hanky Panky - "Computer Love (Sweet Dreams)" (3:16)
Jamie Jupitor - "Computer Power" (previously unreleased version) (4:49)
Review: Mr Bongo take this next one back to 1984 and 1985 with a tasty little split release from The Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupitor. Both tunes offer unique takes on the famous electro funk sound and cult Los Angeles-based producer, vocalist and DJ The Egyptian Lover goes first with seminal track 'Computer Love (Sweet Dreams). It's a deep space exploration with melodic bass and slake drum work. The Lovers's disciple Jamie Jupitor heads up the reverse with the more high speed and edgy style and angular beats of 'Computer Power.' Both tunes make for irresistible body music.
