Review: Between the mid 1970s and the late 1980s, Cameroonian duo J.M Tim and Foty recorded a string of killer Afro-funk albums. This superb compilation from Africa Seven shines a light on the best of the duo's early work, with each of the ten tracks recorded between 1977 and '79. There's much to set the pulse racing throughout, from the crunchy Clavinets, punchy horns and heavy grooves of opener "Douala By Night" and the rubbery disco-funk of "More and More", to the swirling, celebratory vocals, sun-kissed guitars and dazzling analogue synth solos of "Ale". Elsewhere, check the Bee Gees-in-Cameroon flex of "Funky Boogie Love" and "I Love Youande", a breezy affair with a touch of country-funk swing and an a sublime bass guitar riff.

Review: It's been nearly ten years since the first release of Orlando Julius and The Heliocentrics' first ever collaborative album, Jaiyede Afro, which did thorough justice to the creative possibilities of Nigerian Afrobeat that arguably haven't been represented so well since Fela Kuti's last releases. Deft rhythms, and loosely-laid-down layers of guitar and horn, ride over each other like harmonious, health-giving backings for life across this short statement of nine tracks. Now reissued via Strut, we're reminded of its spiritual mood of tricky electronics and wahhing ambiences, as it slowly expands outwards into a holistic psychedelia, more than the some of its easily discernible parts.

Review: As an Afrobeat-influenced band, you know you're onto something when Tony Allen starts singing your praises. Dutch nine-piece Jungle By Night has received plenty of plaudits from the Fela Kuti sticksman over the years, and it's easy to see why. Although there's very little straight-up Afrobeat on their latest must-have LP, "Livingstone", there's plenty of rasping, Fela-style horns, polyrhythmic grooves, Highlife-esque guitar riffs and vintage synthesizer motifs. Combine these with an impressive range of influences - boogie, jazz, Giallo horror movie soundtracks, jazz-funk and disco - and the result is a wonderfully expansive, impeccably played and produced set of tracks that entertain and inspire in equal measure. They might be hard to pin-down, but the Amsterdam band is at least consistent: consistently good, that is.

Review: Los Angeles 12-piece Jungle Fire rarely fails to deliver the goods, offering a heatwave-hot fusion of Latin and African rhythms, rousing horns and infectious instrumentation. This was evident from their earliest releases, particularly debut album Tropicoso, which has now been given the reissue treatment (on pink vinyl, no less) after being out of print for the best part of eight years. It's packed to the rafters with inspired workouts, with our highlights including the glistening guitars and punchy horns of Afrobeat workout 'Comencemos (Let's Start)', the Fela Kuti-esque brilliance of 'Firewalker', the pitched-down dancefloor tropicala of the superb title track, and the toe-tapping, sweat-soaked heat of Afro-funk bomb 'Village Hustle'. In a word: essential!

Review: The late, great Walter 'Junie' Morrison may be best known for his contributions to killer records by Parliament/Funkadelic (whose 'One Nation Under a Groove' he wrote) and Ohio Players, but between 1975 and '84 he released a string of mostly excellent albums. Arguably the best of the bunch is 1976's Suzie Super Groupie, which has now been given the reissue treatment courtesy of Be With Records. Musically, it's a thrill-a-minute ride through P-funk, Ohio Players style flash-fried funk fusion, Sly Stone style funk-rock, synth-laden proto-boogie and cheery, soul-fired dancefloor workouts. That's there's no filler, just a string of killer cuts, is testament to Morrison's immense, sadly missed talents.

The Funky Worm - Live at Dooley's is a unique recording that occurred during Junie's mid-70s Westbound solo period. It has only just been recently discovered and is a real treasure trove of funk gold. There are eight tracks in all, one of which is a high impact medley of tunes which make for a potent brew of funk with hard hitting drums.

Review: Junie Morrison was a member of both Ohio Players and Parliament-Funkadelic, and on many occasions he carried the torches of these pioneering ensembles into his own, solo live settings. The Funky Worm: Live At Dooley's 1976 captures Morrison's performance at Dooley's club in Columbus, Ohio in 1976, where he played songs from his solo albums like 'The Funky Worm', 'Super J' and 'Suzie Thundertussy'. There's an incredible medley with what sounds like a keytar on there, as well as beautiful versions of 'Fopp' and 'Super J', capturing Morrison's sweaty, many-octaved input on the mic and guitar.

Review: Almost entirely ignored at the time of its original release, Nigerian drumming maestro Remi Kabaka's legendary original LP Son Of Africa has gone down in legend as the defining solo statement of an incendiary drummer, whose contributions to music across the jazz and rock spectrums is credited and felt strongly to this day. A founding member of Afro-jazz band Osibisa, Kabaka is credited for his work with many a Rolling Stone and Beatle, but it's his solo work on this Afro-funk rare gem that really gets the least easy to please among us going. Review: Headed up by Benin-born Kaleta - a guitarist who has previously worked with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Lauryn Hill - Super Yamba Band is a New York collective whose decidedly psychedelic fusions of Afrobeat, Highlife and Afro-funk have been getting rave reviews. "Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. With Kaleta's variously fuzzy, sun-kissed and flash-fried licks to the fore, the band trips its way through nine mostly dancefloor-friendly workouts that wrap heavy funk instrumentation, rousing horns and Afrobeat style organ riffs around polyrhythmic drums that recall the distinctive swing of Tony Allen. It's a stylistic blend that guarantees results, as the sheer volume of highlights triumphantly proves.

Review: This is a new record of unearthed delights by Leon Keita, a longtime singer and multi-instrumentalist from Mali. On the eponymous 'Leon Keita', we hear Malian music fused with sensibilities from Sudan-Guinea and Burkina Faso, with modern pop and electronic influences, impeccably played in a smattering of crisp guitars, love-sung lyrics and laboured rhythms.
