  4. Gabula (5:52)
Review: Just over a year ago Phil Lauer teamed up with Fab Mammarella for the Italo-German disco delights of Black Spuma with Mark Barrott's International Feel label a perfect home for their debut transmission together. Thankfully it was no one-off as Intl Feel find some room in a busy 2016 schedule for some fresh Black Spuma produce from the pair with this Onda four-tracker. Fans of crystalline, glistening house music will be in raptures when they hear lead cut "Metallo Nero" which brings to mind Max D's LARJ classic "Polo (Extended Version)", albeit doused in Balearic dust. From here the duo gently amble through mid-tempo Wally Badarou does Beat Down Acid on "Hundred Fingers Man," before a notable upturn in tempo for the effervescent house bliss of the title track. To close, Black Spuma introduce some breakbeats into the mix for the delicious off-kilter "Gabula" which should appeal to fans of Hashman Deejay.

  4. Push (feat Tanaya Harper) (5:51)
Review: Irish tape throb enthusiast The Cyclist adds Bristol house bastions Hypercolour to his discography with this fine four-track 12", Pressing Matters, which features a remix from Pampa and Kompakt legend Robag Wruhme! The title track is a fine example of The Cyclist's warped charm, conjuring bendy bass lines, faltering breakbeats and wavy synth lines over seven delightfully heat-treated minutes. The Robag Wruhme is just as epic, sounding like a lost breakbeat artefact dug up for gleeful 21st century consumption. "Born In '92" adds plenty of pirate radio chatter into it's deep and spectral house bump, whilst Tanaya Harper's vocals lend a palpable edge to the brittle garage swing of closer "Push."

Review: It can be hard to predict what Fort Romeau will do next. While he's always excelled at making evocative, melancholic blends of vintage deep house, instrumental synth-pop and glistening electronica, he's prone to frequent stylistic shifts, as his eccentric 2015 outings on Cin Cin and Running Back neatly demonstrated. For this EP on Live At Robert Johnson, he's back to his deep and emotion-rich best, laying down a trio of tracks that emphasise mood, melody and simple beauty over the demands of the dancefloor. "Facing The Sea" is the most obvious club-friendly of the three - think chugging, hissing rhythms, winding melodies and Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys chords - though it's the intensely beautiful "Seventyfour" that really stands out.

  1. Romance (vinyl only) (9:17)
  2. Supersonic (7:07)
  3. Sine Harmonics (7:06)
Review: Fuse offshoot Infuse returns with a 12" transmission from Bivolaru Iulian, an increasingly influential producer on the Romanian scene under his IULY. B name. Arriving with a wonderfully evocative title, the three-track Harmonics EP impresses from the off with hazy lead track "Romance" pairing up warm and snuggly textures with deep, subdued bass and scratchy percussion. Things do get tougher on the flip with "Supersonic" dominating by a bold flighty synth Carl Craig would be proud of, whilst "Sine Harmonics" is a minimal-flavoured gem that wouldn't sound out of place on a Perlon record.

Review: Aus Music are proud to present another wonderful deep excursion by the artist formerly (well...still, actually) known as Marcus Intalex. This legendary Mancunian producer always had a distinct knack for all things soulful and emotive, even when he was experimenting in breakbeat science. It is no wonder he fits into four to the floor grooves like a glove, as shown on great releases for Klockworks, The Nothing Special and 3024. "Casino" gets the EP of to a fine start with uplifting piano chords lifting you higher and higher over a subtle backing arrangement while the dub version injects more adrenaline into it, complete with a stomping beat and haunting dub chord resonations: well steely! Finally "Contact" is definitely more in line with the label's sound on this fluid and sombre tech house groove that's smooth as silk!

Review: Oakland's finest is back. Aybee returns on his always reliable Deepblak imprint to give us another dose of the real proper deep stuff! Just one side on this release from the man now in Berlin, but it's quality not quantity we say. "The Heart Of The Sun" is a raw and tunnelling cut with eerie synth melodies, a killer bassline and dark analogue drums giving this track its momentum and its edge! A fine taste of a long-mooted new Aybee album due on Deepblak in the coming months.

  2. Lovelee Dae (Bicep dub) (7:05)
Review: Given their well discussed love of vintage U.S house and garage, it's little surprise to see Bicep taking on the potentially tricky task of remixing Blaze's 1996 New Jersey classic, "Lovelee Dae". Wisely, the Belfast boys have retained many of the original's sumptuous elements -sweeping strings, rich chords and summery vocal included - and expertly fused them with carnival-friendly drums and a deliciously tactile, Italian house style bassline. The fine vocal mix is accompanied by a similarly impressive Dub, where the duo makes merry with floating, delay-heavy vocal snippets, filters, and their own dense, party-rocking rhythm.

  4. Zombie Zombie - "The Beach" (4:31)
Review: France's Versatile Records is a truly impressive label. They've been going string for over twenty years, and everything on its wonderful catalogue is worth a listen, whether you're a house fanatic or a jazz-funk head. They've been busy releasing vinyl EP's of this year's comprehensive 1996-2016 compilation, and this latest nugget forms part of the most recent years, where they've teamed up particularly closely with the likes of Sex Tags' DJ Sotofett. The opener is I:Cube's masterfully punchy and supremely executed "VVV" house bomb, followed by Sotofett's and label boss Gilb'r's "Foliages" - remixed here by Sotofett into a loose and jazzy version. I:Cube remixes John Cravache's "Le Desir De Rester Petit" on the flip under the Cubo name, the producer conjuring a dark and hypnotic tune, and Zombie Zombie make an appearance with their fuzzy electro house monster take of "Blue Monday" by New Order, entitled "The Beach". Solid.

  3. Mexican Cola Bottle Baby (Peaking Lights remix - instrumental) (6:15)
Review: Ahead of the release of his much anticipated debut album on ESP Institute, Moscoman delivers a top-notch teaser of what we can expect. Perhaps riffing off the Edwin Birdsong track that Daft Punk famously sampled, "Mexican Cola Bottle Baby" is undeniably atmospheric, with starry, whistling synth lines tumbling down over a dense, African-influenced, live-sounding tribal drum groove. Arguably even better are the accompanying Peaking Lights remixes. While the hazy, tactile instrumental is quietly impressive, we're much preferring the original remix, where trippy female vocals combine impressively with acid-influenced bass, undulating electronics, dreamy melodies and copious amounts of dub delay.

Review: Detroit's Kevin Reynolds made a name for himself through Berlin's Nsyde imprint with the all-conquering Liasions 12" from 2011 which still sounds 100% fresh five years on! We are glad to see Reynolds back on wax and this 12" for Osunlade's Yoruba Records comes as a mooted taster for his debut LP! Four tracks deep, Fembehyaget is just what we needed for this late-summer heat wave. "Dodging The Clip" is a bouncy, driving house chugger with a deep, dubby and almost Flo Po feel, but the title track "Fembehyaget" is much more in line with Osunlade's usual bag of Afro-tribal tricks. On the B-side, "Travelled" sees a mid-tempo 4/4 beat engulfed by a sea of gorgeous synth sequencing, while "Vibe Samba" goes deep, minimal and explorative thanks to a glitchy drum sequence and sporadic layers of bass swarming the place. Recommended.

Review: The latest Sex Tags Wania missive is a 10"-shaped soundclash between Phil Sherburne/Pitchfork agitator DJ Sotofett and a true legend of the Sydney scene in Carlos Zarate aka Zarate Fix (Thug/Sweet Chilli). On the A side, Zarate serves up "Sands Of Time," a smooth low-slung groove carried by exotic vocals reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard; a nice touch. On the flip, Sotofett takes it down to grinding and slow-burning pace with the lysergic EBM styles of "Coiled (Acid mix)" which is one gutsy groove indeed; with a seriously nasty arpeggio covered in the right amount of rust and dust as we like!

Review: Canadian disco don and deep digger Eddie C has certainly come a long way since his days as a local DJ in Banff, Alberta. Now based in Berlin and joining a huge community of expat producers in the city, the On The Shore LP was indeed influenced by his new hometown. His studio being located right on the River Panke in Berlin's growing Wedding district; an area still not fully in the grasp of gentrification yet and it was these lovely and relaxing surrounds, being surrounded by fellow artists in the studios which fuelled inspiration for this release. Expect a mixed bag of all things slo-mo, low slung, deep and above all funky, for sure!

Review: It's that time again people: Kompakt rounds up the usual (and not so usual) suspects on its label roster for the year's most definitive collection of dreamy and emotive electronic music for Total 16. There's a lot to get through on here, but as usual; it's all quite brilliant! Starting out with the return of Spanish minimal hero Alex Under on the gloriously uplifting journey track, "Llaman A La Puerta", The Modernist is back also with the sublime deep house of "The Price Of Love" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals. And of course, the regulars: Jurgen Paap with "Eden"; a true highlight which really nails the label's trademark sound, Matias Aguayo with the bleepy and bumpy retro leanings of "Komm" and label bosses Voigt & Voigt with the rather dark and gloomy epic "Denken Sie Laut".

Review: The fifth release on the ever-improving Church label comes from Chaos In The CBD, a duo who switched from sweatier, bumpin' flavours to deeper, jazzier pastures via a fine recent EP on Rhythm Section International. The three tracks here are similarly blazed and musically expansive, beginning with the stargazing chords, intergalactic melodies and zippy rhythms of "Constraints of Time Travel". It's a little different to what we've come to expect, but no less thrilling. The duo cover more familiar ground with the Theo Parrish influenced bossa-house loveliness of "Phantom Melodies", and the deep, Rhodes-laden broken-house haziness of "Similar Stories".

Last year saw the storied purveyor of richly melodic Detroit house and techno refocus attention on his Natural Midi label, issuing the excellent archival collection of "should've, would've, could've" productions on limited cassette and CDr. It's now great to be able to grip some Scott Grooves Natural Midi produce on the 12" format and well read scholars of the producer's work will no doubt recognise the lead track on Another 500, which is an update mix of the much in demand 2007 joint "Only 500". Complementing this are two B Side gems in the shape of the wall rattling, raw techno jammer "Decimal" and the wonderfully haywire soul laden grooves of "Deeply Uncomfortable".

  4. Nitty Gritty (5:12)
Review: Natural Midi has been one of the primary homes to Scott Grooves' tunes, easily the most underrated producer from the Detroit area, and he's back on his own label with four new beauties. Grooves has been churning out exquisite deep house bangers since the 90's, a very specific brand of dance music that incorporates everything from jazz, to disco and funk; his basslines are always warm and soothing, while his percussion is dusty and the synth lines musical. In an age where 'outsider' house rules, his grounded approach is always a breath of fresh air to us. The opener "Finished" is a funky house swinger choc-a-bloc with gorgeous claps and stuttering toms, and "Inspiration Sound" scratches the 4/4 off for a bit of broken trip-hop - a certified winner. On side B, "The Sauce" is moody, spaced-out and offers subtle keys, while "Nitty Gritty" slams out a dicing little percussion with a lo-fi feel. Absolutely terrific.

Review: Will Long has been missing in action for a little while. Since 2013 to be precise, when he released an EP for basic_sounds. He's back in the game with the onset of a new series for DJ Sprinkles' Comatonse label, a fine doublepack of leftfield house excursions called Purple/Blue. Long's "This Time Has Come" is a classic deep house chugger complete with travelling pads and a dubby bass tone, but Sprinkles' overdub mix is what really brings out the low-ends and - how should we say - ties the room together. "Chumps", on the B-side, is as deep and its predecessor but much more beat-centric in its approach, and the second Sprinkles overdub on this fine EP comes in the form of a gorgeous, aqueous haze of bass, placid tones and a touch of spoken word. If you want deep, then you won't be disappointed.

Review: Melodie is Cristi Tudorache from Bucharest, an artist who has made quite a name for himself through the 2 highly acclaimed releases on Raresh's Metereze and French label Rora in 2015. This is his latest EP, Alderaan, named after an extinct planet in Star Wars. ALMA01 includes the much sought-after Acid Saturday, the track that has had threads dedicated to it all over the web after RPR Soundsystem played it at Weather festival in 2015.

The EP debuts the Almanah label, a new Romanian label under the curatorship of the Origami Sound / Interval crew.

Review: We Play The Music We Love is an Italian and Uk based party that after 7 years of activity has decided to start with its own vinyl only label. The first release comes from one of the founders and resident DJ of the collective: RILLS. He clearly stamping his mark on the label with two solid tracks to launch things with some claut.

The two original tracks, one featuring Sinderesi, explore some dubby house territory with mesmerising chords that will be appreciated on any demanding dancefloor.

The additional remix is from the producer of the moment: Samuel Andre Madsen a.k.a. S.A.M. (Oscillat, Delaphine, Mandar, Fathers and Sons).

Review: Japan's Hokuto Sato is back on his own Aura Music with three dubby and colourful waves of deep, minimalistic techno-house. "Deja Vu" is the sort of thing that DJ Qu would conjure up, except that Sato strips things back even further, and in the same vein as the Villalobos school of thought. On the flipside, "Solarization" spews glitches from all angles amid its icy folds of sound, and "24/60 Sec" adds a similar layer of impenetrable aqueous sonics to a tight snap of drums and percussion.

Review: Following their recent release on the One Records VA, core family members
Yamen & EDA are the next offering on the label with the ‘Temporis EP’. The
sophisticated EP offers four dance floor tracks journeying through
mesmerising grooves, intricate percussions and quirky sound effects.
“We are very happy to return on One Records, it’s really like a family. Adam
and Ash believe in our music and we really feel being part of a crew. That’s
why it’s always special to release on One.” - Yamen & EDA
Having first become part of the label back in 2012 as part of a VA, French duo
Yamen & EDA have since been an integral part of One Records with their EP
‘Planet Brooklyn’ and a remix of Acid Mondays plus a debut gig at fabric as
part of a One Records showcase.
Over the past few years the pair have been hard at work in the studio refining
their style and becoming more confident in their production and DJ gigs. Their
release last year on Early Dub and this latest offering on One demonstrates
this clearly, which has gained them support from the likes of Appolonia and
Raresh amongst many.

Review: Prism was one of many aliases used by legendary Japanese producer Susumu Yokota before his untimely passing. Fallen Angel LP was originally released in 1997 on Japanese techno label Sublime and features more amazing works that we will hope get greater recognition the second time around on this re-issue. The album flows through a variety of captivating moods and grooves; there's the emotive deep house of "Flicker" or "Decalogue", critical beats worked to perfection on "Tears Of Nymph" or "Black Or Color" (drum and bass was all the rage back then) plus the breathtaking ambient excursion that you'd usually attribute to Yokota like on the wonderful "Crystal Mist". Essential listening.
