Review: Techno punk Ayarcana has appeared previously on noisy imprints such as Parachute Records, South London Analogue Material and PLS.UK: so you can get a pretty good idea of where he's coming from!. The Venezuelan producer takes a short break from his newly inaugurated Deathcrush imprint to serve up some more grinding and guttural techno for the newly realised Omen Recordings out of Los Angeles. On the impressive Despite Everything EP, the title track's slamming EBM groove lunges straight for the jugular from the very beginning and will appeal to fans of Alexey Volkov or Terence Fixmer. Next up is the rather Nine Inch Nails sounding industrial melodrama of "Direct Realism". On the flip, Britsh enfant terrible Manni Dee lends his deft hand to a typically furious and body bashing rendition of "Despite Everything" and finally the legendary Dave Foster aka Huren delivers his trademark abrasiveness and sheer terror to truly hammer the message home.

Review: In the press release accompanying the delivery of this debut album from mysterious duo Belief Defect - two "established producers" who wish to remain nameless - the set is described as, "a soundtrack for this apocalyptic time [and] an uncompromising reflection on the state of mankind and its uncertain future." Of course, such dystopian themes are nothing new and have long been part of the aural fabric of industrial music, which is the major musical inspiration for what is an impressively moody, paranoid and, at times, utterly bleak collection of tracks. Stylistically the duo's various dark and mind-altering textures are underpinned by bustling and redlined beats that variously touch on techno, electro, dubstep, IDM and EBM. The result is an impressively singular set that's low on joy, but high on entertainment.

  4. Dance Less (feat Flores Feias)
Review: Hugo Capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on Gomma Records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. Nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, 'no label' transmission. The artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of "Top Less". Guy Debord is no less cut throat in delivering a "Disco Punish" remix of "Lap Dance" on the B-side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then "Dance Less" rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

Review: This Bristol based imprint is onto its third edition after smashing previous 12"s from homegirl Shanti Celeste and the mysterious Fred. Not much is known of next debutante Chekov either but if this EP is any indication: he's certainly on to great things. He could be a Bristolian, if the slowburning and bass heavy roller "Bierce" is any indication: it has a gritty industrial aesthetic to it too. "Rotlicht" (which translates into red light from German) is a dirty, late night house jam powered by dusty analogue elements and a lo-fi vibe. On the flip "Toothru" is the most mellow offering on the EP, where a woozy arpeggio is set adrift above a broken beat and some hypnotic pads letting this less is more approach really shine.

Review: In 1981 the Dusseldorf band Die Krupps (Jurgen Engler, Bernward Malaka, Ralf Dorper) released a seminal album which wrote its own chapter in the history of music. The Stahlwerksinfonie (Steelworks Symphony) was a near thirty-minute musical monolith of metal guitar sounds with scattergun saxophone and shouts, held together by a monotonic bass line and stoic beat. The album proved a worldwide sensation, a nucleus of EBM and industrial rock. It stood as a direct descendent of Cluster's early works, although Krupps mastermind, Engler was as yet unfamiliar with the output of his purported antecedents. 35 years later, a new version is upon us: recorded with Engler's kindred spirits Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru), Jean-Herve Peron and Zappi Diermaier (Faust), Pyrolator (Der Plan) and US post-rock musician Scott Telles.

Review: Spanish producer Jasss it seems is closely affiliated with Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani; often supporting him at his label nights in Berlin in addition to carving out a name for herself in the city as a fine selector playing everything from electro and techno through to industrial. It's all those influences that are brought together as a cohesive whole on her debut album m: Weightless for Swedish noise cognoscenti Ideal. Featuring many of the tracks as previewed during her electrifying live show at Berlin Atonal 2017, it runs the gamut from moody and brooding imaginary soundtracks ("Every Single Fish In The Pond") through to body bashing analogue noise terror ("Oral Couture"/"To Eat With Dirty Hands"), to mesmerising exotica ("Danza"), free jazz ("Cotton For lunch") and new wave EBM mutations. A riveting listen from start to finish and a cohesive effort. Recommended.

Review: Florian Kupfer and Luke Wyatt (Torn Hawk) met through the Ron Morelli Long Island matchmaking service that has done such a global favor by producing relationships and collaborations between previously isolated weirdos all around the world.

As solo artists they have produced work for some of the most adventurous labels around, including LIES , Technicolour, and Rush Hour's No 'Label' imprint.

Now they join forces for this haunting and darkly hilarious trip.

Candy-mongering ghosts of Halloweens past drag chains down dim hallways, punctuating the gloom with the clank of metal on wet concrete.

Who's that knocking on your door? Just a couple of 16 year-old boys wearing face paint with fake blood coming out of their mouths...hungry for candy.

Review: Milanese percussionists Ninos Du Brasil were a surprising choice for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions a few years back: an imprint more usually affiliated with new wave industrial and power electronics. Their rhythmic backbone said to be derived from Brazilian carnival music where they fuse influences of punk, tribal techno and batacuda. Anyone fortunate enough to witness their electrifying live shows can attest to these disparate influences colliding wonderfully. It's yet more powerfully hypnotic, wall of sound rituals on offer with their third full length entitled Vida Eterna; however there are a few pleasant surprises too, such as on "No Meio Da Noite" where their trademark rhythms are meged with a fierce warehouse techno stomp. It calls to mind the polyrhythmic futurism of James Ruskin and Oliver Ho back in the late nineties. Speaking of which "A Magia Do Rei II" sounds like Gymnastics era Regis gone to Carnival. Elsewhere, the powerful wailing on "Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido" resounds through layers of feedback and delay that reminds us of Baile funk and there's also a collboaration with the legendary Arto Lindsay.

Review: Believe it or not, but Dominic Fernow's Prurient project has been circling the cassette scene since the late 1990's. The man behind other projects like Vatican Shadow has continued, at pace, to develop his main alias, however, and 2016's Unknown Rains were another wild and twisted bric-a-brac of gnarly power electronics spanning all sorts of waves. Luckily for us (or some?), Fernow has decided to give this badboy of a cassette its own vinyl reissue, leaving us with some pretty menacing noise to review here. "Let Your Mind Free (Whip The Corpse)" is a pretty terrifying affair, glitching its distorted drones like nuclear missile over the West Pacific, and "Before Rain Becomes Snow" doesn't exactly calm the waters either. On Side B, "In The Ruins Of My Brother" is a construction of eerie background fuzz with plenty of twists and back-door screams, while "Red Poppy Laughter" blasts out a non-stop fountain of gargling noises from the depths of the inferno. A classic Prurient joint.

Review: Italian twosome Tale of Us last collaborated with Vaal - London-based daughter of Sting - way back in 2013. While that EP contained a couple of much-played tech-house rollers, this latest two-tracker explores different influences. A-side "Monument" is particularly alluring, thanks largely to rising and falling synthesizer arpeggio lines, momentum-shifting percussion, foreboding electronics and a spine-tingling vocal from Vaal. Flipside "The Hangar" is an altogether more forthright affair. Underpinned by a relentless kick-drum pattern, it's a moody, angular and mind-altering concoction that looks towards industrial techno for inspiration.

Review: Public System presents a monster collection of the grubbiest, punked out lo fi deviant electronics from the true underground. Some names are more familiar, such as the excellent Templeyard Studios with the uneasy clatter of "Take66", while Buttechno brings a blistering array of tones to the forefront for some truly adventurous acid abstractions. There's a lot of lesser known delights to revel in though, from the boxy beatdown of IXVLF, the darkwave electro thrust of Kluentah and the intricate percussive science of Meze. This may be dirty dance music for wayward souls, but there are some seriously fresh ideas lurking on this ludicrously valuable package.

Review: Aside from introducing us to artists like Walls and Not Waving, the wonderfully off-kilter Ecstatic imprint has provided the music community with all shades of wavy electronic music from around the globe. While new releases used to be their speciality, they've started dealing in the second-hand market, putting out rare and illustrious music that is hard to find in original format. Trax Test: Excerpts From The Modular Network dates from the years between 1981 and 1987, a time when industrial and post-punk were spiralling into dance music. There's a whole wealth of familiar faces on here, such as The Cop Killers, Colin Potter, Merzbow, Die Form and I Nipoti Del Faraone, but the focus seems to be on the Italian wave of power electronics, a slice of history that is often overlooked, much like the rest of Italy's hidden electronic past. For L24.99, this is a true bargain seeing as most of these tunes are nearly impossible to find on their original cassettes, and there's a booklet inside, for the heads. Masterclass.

Review: Gothenburg based artist Johan Zetterquist delivers his debut album for the Swedish iDEAL label, unravelling three extended sound sculptures. Drone metal in the vein of Stephen O'Malley that was recorded on a Gibson SG, amplifier and effects: all live with no overdubs. Zetterquist certainly makes the most out of his his limited set up, taking us from blissful/contemplative moments to savage grinding metallic drones. This all aided by Boris Wilsdorf's excellent and detailed recording that lends itself to attentive, immersive listening. Zetterquist has been involved in the local experimental music scene for the better part of over twenty years, as a both a musician and photographer.
