A Tribute To Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
 Añadir al Carro
 in stock $13.21
Cat: 574439 4. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Moanin' (4:59)
  2. Night In Tunisia (6:03)
  3. Politely (6:38)
  4. The Drum Thunder Suite (6:43)
Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

Leaving You (limited 12" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: DECENTINTERNATIONAL 01. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Uganda Futura 1 (2:27)
  2. Leaving You (5:51)
  3. When Koaa (6:41)
  4. Uganda Futura 2 (2:30)
Review: Helpfully, there's little information about the mysterious artist - or artists - behind this first, four-track missive on the Decent International imprint. Musically, though, there's much to admire - not least the anonymous producer's penchant for combining Ugandan, Liberian and Ghanaian percussion with vintage drum machine hits and humid electronics. While there are some more purist offerings - see the looped indigenous samples, trademark guitars and fluid percussion of "Leaving You", and horn-heavy, vocal rich "When Koaa" - it's the more adventurous offerings that really hit the spot. Both "Uganda Futura 1" and "Uganda Futura 2" are delightfully out-there, pairing original African rhythms with the far-sighted electronics of Motor City techno - it's just a shame they both last no longer than 2 and a half minutes.

Abeja (7")
Cat: OR 001. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Abeja (4:47)
  2. Black & Decker (4:53)
Review: First up on the freshly minted Olindo label is a tasty, two-track 7" single from Venezuelan outfit Monsalve Y Los Forajidos, which is fronted by bassist Raul Monsalve. A-side "Abeja" is a punchy chunk of musically expansive Latin funk, with jazz style horn and woodwind solos wrapping themselves around a killer groove and righteous chanting. It sounds like the kind of cut that will excite both funk DJs and jazz dancers. Flipside "Black & Decker" sees the band move further towards Azymuth style South American jazz-funk territory, with killer guitar and organ lines crowding around a shuffling Afro-Cuban rhythm track.

Teu Sapato (limited hand-numbered 7" + signed post card)
Cat: MAD 006. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Juan Muro - "Teu Sapato" (2:38)
  2. Juan Muro - "Por Meu Amor" (2:09)
  3. Loeme - "Sou Do Samba Chuva Pau" (3:05)
  4. Loeme - "Chuva Pau" (2:17)
Review: Spanish saxophone player and producer Juan Muro first release the Teu Sapato EP way back in 1977. Amongst those who know, the unusual, four-track 7" single has become something of a sought-after item. Here it gets the deluxe reissue treatment via Madmua Records, a label specializing in showcasing overlooked gems from the Spanish musical underground. On the A-side you'll find the gentle bossa nova of "Teu Sapato" - all tango accordions, jazz guitar licks and shuffling rhythms - and the up-tempo, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Por Meu Amor". Flip for two tracks from Muro's Loeme alias: the sun-kissed, Azymuth-down-the-beach samba vibes of "Sou Do Samba Chuva Pau" and the tango-flecked shimmer of "Chuva Pau".

Review: While many avid Mulatu fans will no doubt already own a copy of the master's first - and perhaps most ingenious - work from 1972, one can certainly rely on the mighty Strut to put together a fine reissue. Of note, unlike the many versions which have been retrained by Worthy Records over the years, this new take includes many little extras that are special enough to tempt even the most munitioned Mulatu collectors; aside from seven tracks from Mulatu Of Ethiopia, an utterly inimitable psychedelic jazz journey that defined Ethiopia's entire sound in relation to the genre, this new version includes a whole selection of previously unheard cuts. There are mono album mixes of all the original tunes plus a wide selection of 'takes' from the original recording session, so this LP should have no problem in working up a bit of hype and hysteria from the original-pressing-junkies. This is an essential, highly recommended!

Review: According to those with more knowledge than us, Mulatu Astatke is one of Ethiopia's most influential musicians. He left the country to study abroad in the early 1960s, eventually settling in New York. It was there where he recorded the legendary Mulatu of Ethiopia, a set that helped define what the musician called "Ethio-jazz". Here Strut Records have given the 1972 set - original of copies of which change hands for phenomenal sums of money - the reissue treatment, delivering both stereo and mono mixes of the album's seven sparkling tracks. Although influenced by his Ethiopian upbringing and a deep love of Latin jazz, the album's major inspirations - think jazz-funk, psychedelia and Blaxploitation soundtracks - are all American.

Review: The funk dust from Bahama Soul Club's fourth studio album Havana 58 has barely had a moment to settle and along comes an equally timeless collection of versions. In keeping with the original spirit, the full soul range is explored but done so with a much firmer focus on the dancefloor; ZouZouElectric's dubby house glimmers on "Tropicana Flight", Opolopo's sweet shuffled jack on "Dizzy's Bounce" and Suonho's sultry piano-primed disco are just three of the nine awesome sunkissed twists crammed onto the 180 gram vinyl. Perfectly timed for the summer, too...

Review: By 1988, South African producer "Om" Alex Khaoli had left his Afro-rock and Afro-soul past behind and was focused on his pioneering, synths-and-drum-machines-laden "bubblegum" project, Umoja. It was at this point that the ever-changing collective released 707, a mini-album whose four tracks all reached number one on the South African pop charts. As this Awesome Tapes From Africa reissue proves, it remains a fine set. We're particularly enjoying the bold synth riffs, elastic bass and breezy vocals of "Take Me High" and Fairlight-driven synth-pop wooziness of "Special Night", though eccentric opener "Money Money (Bananas)" - the set's most obviously South African sounding tune - is also brilliant.
