Review: Still scorching from the heat of their debut album 55, Hamburg's mysterious steel pan handlers return with a dope little 45 that features one of the excellent covers from their album plus an exclusive that we guarantee will drive your next floor crazy... Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" takes the lead with its instantly distinctive break and pace. Flip for Sugarhill's "8th Wonder" that's riddled with confidently swung drums, smoky trumpets and a groove so funky you might just have to drop it twice. Give the drummer some.

Review: Since visiting Trinidad & Tobago in the mid 2000s, experienced funk musicians Bjorn Wagner and Ben Greenslade-Stanton have been obsessed with the potential of steel drums. Since debuting in 2007, their Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band project has delivered a string of killer singles that join the dots between heavy funk, steel band music, and Cuban rhythms. Debut album 55 contains a killer mix of essential cover versions (most notably a brilliant take on 50 Cent's "Pimp" and a fantastic re-imagining of Cat Stevens' electro classic "Was Dog A Doughnut"), and original compositions. The majority of these are excellent, though it's arguably the Chic-inspired "Love Like This" and rabble-rousing "Port Of Spain Hustle" that stand out.

  1. Love Like This (3:27)
  2. Was Dog A Doughnut (3:24)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band are one of the curious outfits who sound as if they're right out of the '70s, when in fact they are happily playing on their instruments in 2016, and making some serious burners. Their zesty ad energetic blend of horns, steel pan and live drums is the sort of African funk for those looking for some fresh and innovative rhythms in this day and age, with "Love Like This" providing exactly that - a bass-heavy, tripped-out kinda groove that spits quality from all angles. On the flip of this tidy 7", Cat Stevens classic "Was Dog A Doughnut" is taken on a more tropical flex, stripping down the groove and laying out one hell of a steel-pan concoction. Bless.

Review: Dallas troupe The Demands gigged for 20 years right up to the late 80s but only ever released a handful of singles. This was their first, in 1973, and its original pressings on Clem Records regularly go for triple figures. It's not hard to hear why; "Say It Again" is straight out of the Northern Soul songbook with its feel-good chorus and stomping momentum while "Let Me Be Myself" plays perfect counterpoint with a slow and smoky soul ballad that could woo the trousers off a statue. They weren't called The Demands for nothing.

Review: Shots fired from the 37th chamber... The El Michels Affair's long-standing love for the Wu legacy continues on hot 45" with two more perfect covers from their last album. First up GZA's "Shadow Boxing" gets a hazy Booker T-style shakedown with those dreamy hammonds breezing through like top-down caddies. FlipGhostface Killah's "Iron Maiden" gets the swooning, woozy treatment with a breakdown that flips like a wild dream. No one does Wu covers like Leon Michels' troupe.

From the lesser known mixtape only "Shaolin Brew" to a touching soul twist on ODB's "Snakes" via a rhythm heavy twist on GZA & Method Man's "Shadowboxing" and a spellbinding muted horn take on Raekwon's "Verbal Intercourse", El Michels Affair have composed yet another impeccable chamber excavation. Irresistible.

Review: Longstanding New York troupe El Michels Affair bite down on 2017 with two on-point left-sided soul jams. "Tearz" is a biggie, not least because it features Lee Fields and The Shacks. A warm, organ groove with loose breaks and drops into pure harmonic bliss, it's another spellbinding affair from the Wu-approved crew. "Verbal Intercourse" takes more of a slinkier, subtle approach with clipped horns spitting an insistent hook over sparse, twanging instrumental elements. Stunning, as always.

Review: 17 albums deep and Lee Fields still has something to say. Arm in arm with longstanding band The Expressions, the troupe dig deep an impeccable roll of soul: The soft harmonies and yearning horns of "I'm Coming Home", the light electronic elements on the rhythm of the hazy, laidback torch song "Never Be Another You", the swooning blues of "Let Him In", the almost highlife sparkle to the guitars on "Where Is The Love"... Each of the ten tracks hits with a freshness, energy and realness that few - if any - 70s troubled troubadours could muster. Essential.

Rolling with a real sense of momentum and cool drama, Fields and his troupe still have heaps of love to give. The feeling's mutual too.

Review: Veteran soul man Lee Fields has been touring and releasing music almost constantly since the late 1960s. In recent years, he's struck up a great partnership with the Truth & Soul label's house band, The Expressions. Their latest collaborative single, "Special Night", is something of a cinematic soul treat, with Fields wringing every bit of emotion out of his cracking, heartfelt vocal. The sumptuous A-side (subtitled 'Part 1') is joined on the flip by a sparser, stripped back version ('Part 2') that somehow manages to further emphasize the brilliance of Fields' lyrics and vocal. Both versions feel like future end-of-night classics.

Review: 1970s soul survivor Lee Fields has struck up a pretty special relationship with The Expressions, the house band of Truth & Soul writer/arranger/producer Leon Michels. The veteran vocalist has now released a trio of brilliant albums with the combo, as well as some killer singles. "Coming Home", a sweet-natured slab of '60s soul complete with brilliant musicianship and authentically fuzzy production, is another must-have. B-side "Precious Love", a torch song with a backing track that sits somewhere between punchy Southern Soul and laidback funk, is also superb. In other words, if you love soul, you need this in your life.

Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has reinvented herself in recent years, swapping the contemporary, radio-friendly '90s R&B of her youth for a sound heavily influenced by vintage, 1960s and '70s soul and funk. It's a blend that was explored on last year's superb Queen Alone full-length. The two tracks showcased on this 7" were both featured on that album. "Underneath My Feet" is particularly potent, with Wray offering a rasping, impassioned vocal that seems to soar above the triple-time backing track. "Guilty", with its sweet guitars, harmony backing vocals and rock solid funk breakbeat, sounds a little like some of Sharon Jones' more poignant moments.

Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has enjoyed an up and down kind of career, moving from hotly-tipped late '90s R&B chart-topper to well regarded backing singer in the space of a few short years. She returned to the limelight in 2013 alongside Terri Walker in Lady, and here delivers her first solo set for some time. Queen Alone has an undeniably retro-futurist feel, with Wray cannily combining hip-hop style drum breaks with songs and instrumentation that mine 1960s soul for inspiration. It's a formula that guarantees thrills throughout, from the shuffling, head-nodding beauty of "In Love (Don't Mess Things Up)" and organ-laden slow-jam "Make Me Over", to the righteous, Dap Kings style dancefloor brilliance of "Bad Girl".

Following her last project with Teri Walker, she's now rolling solo on Big Crown with a new album - Queen Alone - due in September. Here's a taster of what to expect: "Do It Again" swags with the deft fusion of early 90s Soul II Soul swagger and timeless Nicole Willis-style investigations while "In Love" is a much more stripped back guitar-based track that's reminiscent Macie Gray's breakthrough hits.

Review: Leon Michels and Danny Akalepse only set up Big Crown Records this year, but it's been off to a veritable flyer with a slew of cross-format releases that canvas the constellations of soul, funk and international flavours. The latest act to be anointed with the Big Crown are Okonkolo, a band led by Abraham Rodriguez whose soulful voice is the perfect foil for the bata drums and voices soaring through the horns and guitars of Jacob Plasses's production. The musical prayers that make up Okonkolo's debut EP Rezos (Prayers) are some of the most complex and beautiful that any classical tradition has produced. They are also some of the oldest, addressing Obatala, the creator of the world, Ochun, the goddess of love and beauty, and Chango, God of the drum. The beauty and otherworldliness of these prayers endures, the rhythms and chants reimagined in a way that is somehow both ancient and new.

Review: Throughout the 1960s and '70s, Sunny and the Sunliners were one of Texas's most successful groups. They specialised in "Tejano music", a Tex-Mex fusion of popular American and Latin American styles. "Should I Take You Home", which was first released on 7" single in 1969, is arguably one of the group's "straightest" tracks; a sweet, laidback soul ballad full of Stax style horns, close harmony backing singing and a sublime, emotion-filled lead vocal. Flipside "My Dream" is similarly heartfelt and saccharine in feel, with bandleader Sunny Ozuna's vocal alternating between impassioned sweetness and world-weary melancholy.
