Review: For his last outing on Hospital Productions, Nine Inch Nails collaborator Alessandro Cortini utilized just two pieces of equipment: a Roland MC-202 and a delay pedal. For this follow-up, he's expanded his toolbox a little, supplementing those hardware pieces with two further machines: a Roland TR-606 and TB-303. Musically, Risveglio inhabits a similar space to its predecessor, with Cortini creating blurry, fluid dreamscapes built around semi-rhythmic loops, distorted chords and fuzzy ambient textures. Listeners may struggle to spot the TB-303 - most often used to create ragged waves of intense electronics - such is the unique way in which Cortini manipulates it. Regardless, the Italian's post-industrial, half-awake soundscapes are thoroughly mesmerizing.

Review: Milanese percussionists Ninos Du Brasil were a surprising choice for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions a few years back: an imprint more usually affiliated with new wave industrial and power electronics. Their rhythmic backbone said to be derived from Brazilian carnival music where they fuse influences of punk, tribal techno and batacuda. Anyone fortunate enough to witness their electrifying live shows can attest to these disparate influences colliding wonderfully. It's yet more powerfully hypnotic, wall of sound rituals on offer with their third full length entitled Vida Eterna; however there are a few pleasant surprises too, such as on "No Meio Da Noite" where their trademark rhythms are meged with a fierce warehouse techno stomp. It calls to mind the polyrhythmic futurism of James Ruskin and Oliver Ho back in the late nineties. Speaking of which "A Magia Do Rei II" sounds like Gymnastics era Regis gone to Carnival. Elsewhere, the powerful wailing on "Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido" resounds through layers of feedback and delay that reminds us of Baile funk and there's also a collboaration with the legendary Arto Lindsay.

Review: Believe it or not, but Dominic Fernow's Prurient project has been circling the cassette scene since the late 1990's. The man behind other projects like Vatican Shadow has continued, at pace, to develop his main alias, however, and 2016's Unknown Rains were another wild and twisted bric-a-brac of gnarly power electronics spanning all sorts of waves. Luckily for us (or some?), Fernow has decided to give this badboy of a cassette its own vinyl reissue, leaving us with some pretty menacing noise to review here. "Let Your Mind Free (Whip The Corpse)" is a pretty terrifying affair, glitching its distorted drones like nuclear missile over the West Pacific, and "Before Rain Becomes Snow" doesn't exactly calm the waters either. On Side B, "In The Ruins Of My Brother" is a construction of eerie background fuzz with plenty of twists and back-door screams, while "Red Poppy Laughter" blasts out a non-stop fountain of gargling noises from the depths of the inferno. A classic Prurient joint.

  1. A Slave Boy That Died An Awful Death For Not Keeping His Owner’s Horses, He Helps People Who Are Looking For Lost Things (10:01)
  2. An Old Hag That Wears Shoes & Stomps Over People's Stomachs At Night Making Them Breathless (10:01)
Review: Dominic Fernow's Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement project might not be the most productive of the man's monikers these days, but it is certainly not forgotten or overlooked by any team member of the Juno HQ. In fact, this reissue of 2011's Green Amulet Crafts Supernatural Qualities, out once again through Hospital Productions, has been missing from our shelves for quite some time, and we have to say that its reappearance is very much welcomed. Here goes - "A Slave Boy That Died An Awful Death For Not Keeping His Owner's Horses, He Helps People Who Are Looking For Lost Things" is a classic slice of RSE nastiness, where distant remnants of techno drums are overshadowed by vast plaines of rich power electronics and ghostly noise infusions of the deadliest variety; while this isn't exactly your classic, stand-up techno, it is very much a journey in its own right. On the flip we have another poem called "An Old Hag That Wears Shoes & Stomps Over People's Stomachs At Night Making Them Breathless", which is essentially a continuation of the prior track's descent into the fiery depths of the inferno, or rather, a casual studio session in Fernow's ever tenebrous mind. A hot tip, indeed!

Review: How one appropriates themselves is allegedly what Guy Brewer looked inwards and asked himself regarding his current penchant for techno and experimental music and covering up a somewhat secretive past as part of drum and bass duo Commix. The Appropriation Stories LP addresses this subject head on, for his second full length release on Hospital Productions since 2013's Under A Single Banner. The Berlin based producer conducts experiments merging the worlds of harsh and textural techno (as heard on his respected Avian imprint) with industrial noise mayhem as executed under his Covered In Sand or Alexander Lewis aliases. All in all a compelling listen that provides moments of cerebral listening with adrenalised dancefloor fodder.
