THREADS 006
Cat: THREADS 006. Rel: 12 Jan 23
A Virgo On The Moon & Paolo Mosca - "Mattherhorn" (6:05)
Kebab Traume - "Nova Trance" (4:52)
Mario Liberti - "Treat Me Good" (5:59)
Matteo - "The Truth Was Out" (feat Lourene) (6:39)
Review: Muddy, dreamy and dubby new dance cuts from THREADS, who invite four of their mainstays to the fore with a dry and entraining take on trance. Kebab Traume (in English, 'Kebab Dream') wafts a mouth-watery cylinder of sonic meat under our noses with 'Nova Trance', which melds stabs, basses and kicks with all the certainty of a honey badger. Meanwhile, Mario Liberti's 'Treat Me Good' urges us to do just that via the mode sultry sampled vocals and funk bass whirls.

Stay At Home The Dogs Are Out
Cat: SAH 003. Rel: 13 Sep 23
Aline Umber - "Satisfied"
Adrien Calvet - "The Foil"
Latent - "Interstellar Object"
Karaba - "Loop Da Loop"
Ilyes - "Last Organ I Promise"
Review: Adrien Calvert is building up a presence in that cheeky, chunky 90s revival happening around minimal tech house at the moment, and his Stay At Home label is becoming a hot bed of fresh and fruity house jams. Take this VA release as a fine case in point, welcoming the bulbous acid strutter 'Satisfied' by Aline Umber to shake its shoulders next to Calvert's own playful deep house joint 'The Foil'. Latent takes things space-wards on the B side with 'Interstellar Object' before Karaba completes the picture with the crafty beats and synapse-tickling synth delights of 'Loop Da Loop'.

Kai Alce - "Love Exists" (6:40)
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Soul Expression" (7:35)
Hector Ram - "Morning Sun Vibes" (6:39)
Review: Short Attention has more than grabbed ours with its first two EPs and this third one keeps up that good early form. It's a heavy-hitting mix of pivotal house talents starting off with prolific Windy City player Boo Williams. The big man's 'Transformation' is a smooth and chord-laced house roller that has a more reflective vibe than his usual party-starting offerings. Atlanta don Kai Alce's 'Love Exists' is a heartfelt house romance then the long-time partnership of Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana douse us in star-gazing chords on 'Soul Expression' that leave you feeling refreshed. Hector Ram's 'Morning Sun Vibes' then uplifts with beautifully gentle piano chords.

What I Want

What I Want (5:55)
This (6:16)
Lucid State (6:56)
Review: Is there anyone in the game that has been turning out such essential club sounds in so many different styles for such a long and consistent run as Burnski? Whatever he has on his cornflakes, we want some, because he's done it again here, this time with pal Kelper. 'What I Want' takes up the whole of the a-side and is mix of everything from deep house to minimal to Chicago jack. It's a busy, restless tune with a hooky vocal that keeps you locked. 'This' is a more tripped-out 5AM groove with warped deep space sound designs and airy drums that float. 'Lucid State' taps into a dreamy 90s tech house vibe that is utterly compelling.

Ghoroob
Ghoroob (hand-stamped 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: GORKY 1. Rel: 12 Jun 23
Ddrhode - "Ghoroob" (Conversation) (7:37)
Kolony Gorky - "Orange Sky" (7:09)
Review: Kolony Gorky launches a new self-titled label with a special hand-stamped 12" that is mad limited. It features Ddrhode's 'Ghoroob' (Conversation) - another version of which has been previously released digitally on a Dial compilation. It's a loose jumble of drums and hits with a dusty deep house feel that makes you want to shake your bones. Gorky then steps up on the flip with the subtly joyous chords of 'Orange Sky' which dance in a trance-like fashion over organic house drums. A very tasteful way to kick off a new label, that's for sure.

Techu - "Promise " (9:12)
Kpo - "Psithurism " (8:27)
Origins Of Time - "Disturbed System" (8:04)
Review: Spanish label Bohrium are back with the second volume of Empirical Test, a release that showcases new musical visions, deep grooves and minimalistic bangers. The first side begins with Italian veteran Fabrizio Maurizi, aka Dorothy's Dream, who hypnotises you with 'Awarawati', a blend of minimal bass, futuristic ambience and simple beats. This is followed by Techu, the rising star of Rominimal, who delivers the ethereal tech house of 'Promise'. Over on the flip you have Origins Of Time from Morocco, who ends the vinyl with 'Disturbed System', a powerful late-night banger with spacey vocals and Detroit vibes. 180g & limited copies.

DVS1 - "Lower Wacker Drive" (6:25)
I:Cube - "Folie Noire" (5:48)
Marko East & Jordi Chu - "Go Kart" (4:25)
Like A Tim - "Wonderline 1" (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (5:45)
Katerina - "Meet Chu In My Dreams" (5:44)
Review: With acid sounds once again being all the rage, Running Back has decided to launch a new series featuring previously unreleased, TB-303-heavy cuts. The versatility of the machine - which, after all, was initially designed to create basslines - comes to the fore across the EP, from the throbbing, acid bass-propelled techno-jack of DVS1's 'Lower Wacker Drive' and the low-tempo early morning creepiness of I:Cube's 'Folie Noire', to the excitable acid house funkiness of 'Go Kart' by Marko East and Jordi Chu's, and the colourful dreaminess of 'Meet Chu In My Dreams'. Best of all though is Prins Thomas's remix of Like a Tim's 'Wonderline 1', whose TB-303 squelches ride a cowbell-rich disco-not-disco groove rich in the Norwegian's usual loose-limbed, live-sounding drums.

Groove Access Presents: Chicago Is Home Vol.2
Cat: GAREC 005. Rel: 21 Nov 22
Ed Nine & Kid Enigma - "Bandleaders" (5:40)
JSquare - "Get Wicked" (6:18)
Geto Mark - "Move" (4:11)
Steve Noah - "The Hater" (6:31)
AFTR - "Undercover" (5:59)
Review: It's coming home, it's coming home - house music is coming home! A second instalment of the Groove Access: series Chicago Is Home offers us five fresh tracks from the windy city landing in a glorious cavalcade of razor edged snares and hypnotic jack house. Ed Nine & Kid Enigma's 'Bandleaders' opens side one in spectacular fashion with spoken mantras lying deep in the mix, distinctive phasing arpeggios, poking keyboard riffs and ringing cymbals. JSquare's 'Get Wicked' kicks with even more power, tribal rhythms bouncing of bleepy melodies, before 'Move' by Geto Mark rounds off the side with the strutting, beautifully brutal 'Move', a proper 3AM peak time pleaser. Steve Noah's 'The Hater' opens side two, a wily acid line worming its way across a raw, stripped down backing before exploding into serious gnarliness when you least expect it. AFTR's 'Undercover' rounds things off with another knuckle duster of a tune, leaving no doubt that Chicago is still the place to be when it comes to house.

Review: Both a fan of the number and the machine, Michigander Music boss Brian Kage has always related eight to the paths we take in life - and being on the right one. For the label's eighth release, Kage pays homage to electronic music's futuristic past by bringing it up to speed with the present, including reimagining one of his own releases from when net labels were a thing.

Oversleep (7:00)
Snore (7:12)
Dodoitsu (9:52)
Review: Cough & Laugh might be an odd name for a label, but so too is the music it has thus far put out wonderfully unusual. Kai Kan's opening cut here 'Oversleep' is a glitchy and abstract minimal rhythm with scraping, scratchy sounds and scattered hits over a warped low end, busted bass blasts and plenty of malfunctioning machine sounds. 'Snore' is another freaky late-night sound track for narcotic after-parties that features samples of people snoring. Last of all is 'Dodoitsu,' a more elastic rhythm but one again peppered with paranoid sounds, whispers, hums and distant hits. Inventive stuff.

Shadow Of Jaguars (7:22)
A Siege Of Herons (6:48)
A Klank Of Robots (6:17)
Review: Shadow Sanctuary label head Dexter Kane steps up here with a first volume of a new series entitled DK Wax. It is all direct to dance floor club tackle for the minimal and tech house world but all with Kane's own style. 'Shadow Of Jaguars' opens with silly drums looping down low and nice raw perc. '
A Siege Of Herons' then picks up the pace with a bumping groove fleshy out with fat bass and cosmic chords and the brilliantly entitled 'A Klank Of Robots' is all buffed up with a subtle garage shuffle, tripped out and sci-fi melodies and a groove that won't quit.

Fantas (Jhobei's Jiggle) (5:54)
Review: Italian newcomer Matt Karat brings his breezy and sunny house sounds to BinarySound with this future facing four tracker, the Choco Fantasy EP. It shows he has a love of tech house but a passion for cosmic soundscapes. 'Magic' is first up and is built on snaking basslines and blissed out Detroit chords. 'Ghi' is a more freewheeling rhythm with thudding kick and rippling melodic radiance and 'Fantas' then layers up bleeps and sonar pulses with driving deep house cuts. Last of all is a remix of 'Fantas' called Jhobei's Jiggleand it sure is a tight, punchy and kinetic tech cut with bright melodies and playful vibes.

Ya Dig (Kaytronik Revision) (5:29)
Feeling Rite (8:17)
Review: For his latest trick, Karizma has decided to revisit 'Ya Dig', a killer cut from his 2013 album Wall Of Sound. Donning his Kaytronik guise, an alias often used for more tech-tinged (but no less soulful) productions, he delivers a remake rich in woozy, staccato synth sounds, lo-fi electronics, looped vocal snippets, flashes of soulfulness and beats as rubbery and righteous as you'd expect from the master of infectious rhythms. Over on the flip we get the previously unheard 'Feelin' Rite', where pal Osunlade's delay-laden vocals ride a crunchy, loose-limbed Afro-house beat and woozy, warming chords. It's the kind of track that you can get lost in, sonically, but is infectious and dancefloor-friendly enough to encourage proper heads-down dancing.

Topper (5:49)
FEZ (7:00)
Review: Fresh experimental dance cuttage from Jonathan Kaspar for Kompakt, clearly at the label's absolute vanguard for what constitutes boundary-pushing in 2023. A resident at the Gewolbe club in Cologne, Kaspar has surely flexed enough muscles to have worked out what makes the less easy-to-please dance-goer tick - and we think he's cracked it on 'Speicher 127', two tracks indulging weirdo drum-flams and crazy-emotive filter-sweeps respectively. Recalling the work of Barnt, but with perhaps an even more patient approach, the likes of 'Topper' and 'FEZ' are not to be trifled with.

Flash Point (8:35)
Transposed Sky (feat Paul Brenning) (5:34)
Review: Jonathan Kaspar returns to Damien Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels for another round of captivating and melodic techno by way of his latest EP 'We Come'. Already having graced the discographic annals of Cocoon and Kompakt, Kaspar's sound is now well established; his pushes and pulls adeptly between big room, dubby trance and broken-down electro and house, never quite placeable in the intermediary spaces between them. One could call it progressive house, but that would be underselling it; 'Flash Point' is the highlight here and the case in point, making masterful use of ducking and distortion to really flesh out the central syncopated stab as a focal point of the track. Nor should Paul Brenning's version of 'Transposed Sky' be missed for a second.

Review: Kassian never hurries his release rate which means that when the Shall Not Fade and SB Jamz producer does drop new music you need to tune in. This latest comes six months after his self-released and self-thief versions 003 back in January and arrives via the esteemed K7. 'X-303' is twisted and textured techno for late night warehouses with 'Tabla' a more layered up jumble of percussion and loopy drums. 'Prelude' burrows deep on a prying lead and bulky but rubbery drum loops and 'Patterns' rounds out with an edgy vibe, clipped vocals and uneasy synths that keep you locked.

Tape Display (7:50)
Review: The Meld label continues to establish itself and its sound in the murky minimal and tech house undergrowth with another fresh EP. This platter comes from Londoner Kawaii San who kicked the year with a fine outing on Magic Carpet and now builds on that with four more aqueous and innovative grooves. 'Poetry In Motion' is a thumping cut in the mould of the early Eddie Richards sound. 'More & More' has a dubber low end a little more room for trippy details and zippy synth motifs. 'Aqualand' is a smooth and serene cosmic viber and then proving he has real range, San's final cut 'Tape Display' rides on a nice broken beat.

Kerwins Nirvana (7:53)
Review: Minimal is a vast world of musical intrigue with endless different styles explored by artists all over the global scene. Kawaii San comes at it from a tight, tense and abstract perspective on the opener to this new EP. It has searching synths spraying across the face of hunched-over beats while fractured spoken words and glistening sci-fi sounds all keep you on edge. 'Ding A Ling' is a retro 90s prog and techno fusion and 'Get Up & Go!' brings shiny synth motifs to silver tech house beats. last of all is the more psychedelic edge of 'Kerwins Nirvana'.

Nathan Boost - "Swingy Swang" (4:50)
Review: The New Year has brought with it an influx of many new labels that are all eager to get your attention. This one, BinarySound, is well deserving of it as it offers up this cosmic tech house exploration courtesy of Kawaii San and Nathan Boost. It is San who opens up with his retro-future and fulsome cut 'Roller Derby' before getting a little deeper and bringing some subtle acid to 'What U Got.' Boost shows a different side to tech house with 'Whale Stuff' having a more playful feel and wispy pads that shine bright. 'Swingy Swang' closes out with clipped, kinetic tech funk and garage percussive patterns that are super nice.

Review: Tunisian imprint Danzha made an impressive debut with the first volume of this series but then went rather quiet. Now, more than two years later, it is finally back with a second volume. Maieutics II is another various artists affair offering up plenty of new names. Denis Kaznacheev's 'The Banach Tarski Paradox' is a dubby minimal marcher with alien life forms weaving in and out in the dead of night. Matt Star's 'Elephant Chair' then gets more trippy with its wonky motifs and daubs of synth. On the flip, Root's 'Palomino' is deep, tight, clipped and frictionless tech and then the machines take over for the futuristic soundscape of Amin Ravelle's 'Vaila.' Plenty of occult musical personality makes this an EP well worth checking.

Review: Clean-cut Scottish producer Kerr Slaven has been touted as a rising star for some time, though it's only since joining Toolroom in 2019 that he's come close to fulfilling his immense potential. 'Cold Light', his latest single for Mark Knight's much-loved imprint, has all the makings of a genuine crossover hit, with Leo Stannard's evocative, emotive vocals rising above an attractive blend of funk-fuelled house beats, rubbery electronic bass, dreamy chords and jaunty synth stabs. This accessible, radio-friendly blend is given a big room makeover on the accompanying 'Club Mix', a boisterous, sub-bass-heavy affair rich in jacking tribal drums and big builds, while the '6am Mix' re-casts the cut as a melancholic, soft-touch Balearic pop treat.

The late US house heavyweight has a huge legacy behind his various aliases, and now Chiwax are looking at the Beta 12" from 1999. Opening cut 'Left With Nothing' is a powerful dose of deep house with a vocal turn from David Walker, while 'Nastiness' shows how gnarly and experimental Kelley could make his productions when he wanted to. 'Armageddon' is a hot and heavy worked with pumping compression creating the kind of locked in, sweaty atmosphere basement raves are made for.

Review: Dutch DJ/producer Kennedy returns with another installment in the Dream series, on his Dream Machine imprint no less. This second musical manifestation is the latest in a unique series of thoughts, sensations and sounds occurring from his mind, translated by machines. On the A side we have some serious hi-tech jazz in the form of 'Lifeforms' strongly taking its cues from the Underground Resistance style of Detroit techno. Over on the flip, the interstellar journey into hi-tech soul continues with the evocative 'Orbit' where a rich tapestry of visceral pads play centre stage, underpinned by syncopated 313 style rhythms. Review: Sometime Constant Sound regular Kepler has released some terrific music over the last few years, not least last year's debut album 'Freedom Mills' (a set named after a venue in his home city of Leeds). He continues this fine run of form on 'Sense', his first outing on Breakfree. The title track is suspenseful, forthright and pleasingly psychedelic, offering an energetic, sub-heavy take on tech-house, while 'Confusion' pairs the swing and low-end pressure of UK garage with the glassy-eyed sonics of contemporary UK tech-house. Elsewhere, 'Feeling Hazy (Chugging Mix)' cannily combines crunchy drums with bleeping electronics, dubby bass and ghostly aural textures, and closing cut 'Breathe' doffs a cap to ambient techno and hip-hop influenced mid-90s IDM.

Review: The cultured underground outlet that is Brouquade squeezes out one last release of 2023, this time from the enduring man of the moment, Kepler. He brings his usual cosmic touch and mastery of celestial melody to a trio of tasty tech house cuts. The first is a busy one with clacking drums and snappy snares on 'Enter The Void' that takes you through the cosmos at a great pace. 'MRF' then rides a nice bumpy low end and has delightfully deft astral melodies peeling off the beats before 'Event Horizon' shuts down with a hurried and snappy rhythm and more dark and unsettling synth explorations.

Kepler looks to the future with his cosmic synths and neon melodies, pumping electronic grooves and driving sense of energy, whereas Ruh has always operated more in smoky basements, with dusty drums and moody heads-down atmospheres. And so it proves here with 'Moments' taking you on a slick trip to the stars, and 'Free Game' (extended live take) a delightfully analogue and melancholic exploration of the deep for the wee small hours.

Kepler - "Dream Plant" (5:14)
Midge Thompson - "Two Shy Crew" (8:01)
Nikol - "Leon" (5:32)
Keefy G - "Tools For Le Car" (5:20)
Review: The first release on the freshly minted MASS label is a smorgasbord of nostalgic, retri-futurist delights that showcases cuts from a quartet of artists old and new. Kelper kicks things off by adding warming chords, squelchy synth bass and far-sighted electronic motifs to a punchy electro beat, before Midge Thompson joins the dots between spacey, early '90s deep house and the sub-heavy sound of bleep techno. Nikol's 'Leon' is a fine tribute to early '90s UK techno full of clattering drum machine beats, moody motifs and stabbing 'LFO' bass, while Keefy G's 'Tools For Le Car' sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Kraftwerk, Sweet Excorcist, the Nathaniel X Project and a restless scratch DJ. As label debuts go, it's an impressive first outing.

Review: The Spanish outlet Coming From Returning To made its debut more than three years ago now with an EP from Jorge Gamarra that soon sold out, and finally after way too long it is back with a second offering, this time from KG Beat. Opener 'Breathing Engine' is a twisted and cosmic tech-funk pumper for psyched-out floors, then 'Full Moon Escapade' ups the ante with a prickly and percussive peak time workout. 'You Can Fly' then pulls back for some steamy tribal grooves and chunky house funk and last of all is the delightfully deep, low slung and mid-tempo allure of 'The Spys Are Among Us.'

KG Beat - "The Breathing Engine" (6:52)
Cosmic Soup Sound System - "Eddie De Boing De Boing" (7:01)
Review: Mineral Cuts is back with more otherworldly tech house offerings, this time in the form of a split 12". KG Beat is up for with a well constructed and prog-tinged track that is always on the move; always giving you the feeling that it is going somewhere big. It's the synth sequences that convey that feeling and mean you remain locked in throughout. Cosmic Soup Sound System then styes sup to twist melons a little more with 'Eddie De Boing De Boing,' another track that gives you a dancefloor rush with waves of warm synth over old school tech house drums that are perfectly clean and punchy.

My House (7:09)
In Waves (8:00)
The Demonic Screen (7:43)
Turkish Camp (7:59)
Review: Dutch label Daro carried a release from Can Oral's Khan alias back in 2021, and now they've tapped up the veteran techno legend for another suite of high-quality minimal techno from a true original. This isn't the kind of tepid, uninspired after party fodder you can find in most places - Oral's experience speaks through his machines and we get treated to a wayward kind of club music that bursts with personality. 'My House' is tough as hell and just as freaky, dealing in tightly clipped stabs which come on like SND making actual party music. 'In Waves' by contrast is a gloopy, bong bath of an ambient techno piece, while 'The Demonic Screen' flips the script once again with fragmented, stop-start beats working according to an unusual internal logic. 'Turkish Camp' completes the picture with a squashed and grubby transmission from the underworld, with more than enough low-end heft to keep a late night crowd locked on.

What You Want (Son Kota remix) (6:55)
Granular Lights (Doradice remix) (6:45)
It's So Real (Pynewood remix) (7:09)
Review: Kashatskikh makes it to release number 15 here and decides to do so with a selection of four kicking tech house remixes. Ali Demir is first and flips 'Long Distance' into a nice leggy cut with snappy snares and balmy arps softened the beats. 'What You Want' (Son Kota remix) has lush harmonics layered up over deeply buried kicks and bass that bump along nicely and 'Granular Lights' (Doradice remix) switches up the energy levels with a more driving but no less supple and seductive sound. Last of all is the super serene and dubbed out tech roller 'It's So Real' (Pynewood remix).
