Review: After being commissioned to produce several 'interlocking' ambient pieces for an art gallery piece in LA, Brian Foote and Sage Caswell decided to take the concept of 'audience crossfading' to the next level, creating an entire ambient album using a particular sonic technique. Over five long pieces from 'Waterwheel' to 'Smiley', their aim was to evoke the feeling of bodies moving in thoroughfares. The tracks are long-exposed movements captured in ambient space, blending rhythms and soundscapes for chillout rooms that exist only in memory now.

This fifth transmission is another doozy that collects four different artists who all operate on the spaced out end of the electronic house and minimal spectrum. The Former Landlords kick off with breezy and balmy 90s tech house style sounds on 'Council Pop' then Session 4000 go 'Off' with plenty of sci-fi pads and clipped, kinetic drum programming as well as some playful vocal samples. Mop Py' 'Beskar' is a more psychedelic late night wonder with gurgling bass and lovely neon synth trails. Jad & The complete this essential slab of wax.

Review: During the early-to-mid 1990s, Nurmad Jusat released a string of now sought-after singles on Likemind that showcased an emotive, far-sighted take on techno that still sounds timeless all these years on. This fine collection features various recordings he made - but never released - as Nuron and Fuge back in 1993 and '94. As inspired by the techno sounds of his native UK as the far-sighted brilliance of purist Detroit techno and the dreamy soundscapes of Larry Heard, it's a genuinely brilliant collection of long-lost gems. Review: A new label out of Mexico, Short Attention Records launches its second release with a five track offering of proper melodic house & techno from Hector Ram with the word 'quality' stamped large upon them. 'Midnight Sounds' starts things off with the grand rhythmically-building 'Midnight Sounds', almost New Order-esque at times. 'For Our Small Parties' follows, old skool again in flavour, blending subtly employed breaks and a sturdy house framework, then 'Dear Dancefloor', probably the gentlest and most fragile effort here, opens side two. 'On The Road' boasts a more electro feel and Orbital-esque synths, and is deemed worthy of a second airing via a nicely throbbing remix from Detroit's Generation Next closing proceedings.

Review: The latest from Steve O'Sullivan and Mosaic's archive-raiding series sees the first ever airing of an unreleased extended mix of the soft and soul-drenched 'Composure', plus two choice selections on the flip - the sleek sub-bass powered 'She Don't Do Chicks' and a dub mix of the equally streamlined 'Bumper Car'. If the A-side is a luxurious period piece of sorts - it could be related to Underground Resistance's 'Galaxy 2 Galaxy' for instance - then two on the other side could have been made yesterday they're so relevant and playable, coasting along with the kind of subtly jacking framework and dubby basslines that G Man made his own. Review: If there is one thing we deal a lot in, it is stripped-back tech house. And this final drop of the year from Skip Audio on New Year's Eve is right up there with the sort of quality tackle we love. It fits a sweet spot between synthetic sound design, cerebral abstraction and machine soul. 'Mex' is a busy groover that roams around quite a bit under the similarly freeform synths. 'Freeform' comes on with a bit of extra punch and bite, the drums powering on the dusty hi-hats and bursts of radiant synth warmth. 'Trigger' comes as a glitchy and reverberating original and a gritty Silat Beksi remix.

Review: The Mysticisms label welcomes Coral D aka Duncan Stump for a debut outing here that marks the first new music to be part of the ongoing and most excellent Dubplate series. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. This one finds him bringing some dub reggae influences as 'Dissolves' is built on a chugging rhythm with smeared chords. 'DR 55' is then a masterfully laidback digi-dub groove that warps space and time and so leaves you utterly hypnotised.

That's just what this dubious duo have gone and done with 'Suck A Dick'; replacing their usual EP-cover representation of Big Ben with a giant phallus, Paranoid London have successfully drawn an astute analogy between masculine dominance and the totalitarian dominance of the state. Featuring the unmistakable vocals of regular collaborator Mutado Pintado, it's a guaranteed floor-filler, unusually humorous for the pair's austere, distorted repertoire.

Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Review: After dropping a killer three-tracker from Spiri:tual and a similarly impressive multi-artist EP, Enfasi Records returns with the label's first and only 12" of 2022: a quietly confident four-tracker from prolific producer Floog, who has previously released on labels including Mulen, Visionquest, Atipic and Tartouffe (amongst others). There's plenty of playable, peak-time-ready material on show across the 12", from the bubbly sequenced bass, kick-drum-driven beats and spacey electronics of opener 'About That', to the shoulder-swinging tech-house funk of 'Speak & Spell' (whose jaunty but weighty bassline is a treat) and the classical tece melodiousness of 'Anaris', where chiming, rising and falling lead lines and ultra-dreamy pads catch the ear.

Review: Copenhagen-based Icelander Ohm and Berlin-based Philipp Priebe mine the warmest depths of dub techno here across three stumble originals. 'Flickering Lights' is silky and muted, with smooth drums and claps gliding over a cavernous groove that is subtly lit with sustained chords. The Anton Kubikov remix is more lithe and electronic, with reflective synths and nimble leads making for a minimalistic workout. There is then a shadowy but dynamic dub vibe to 'Sacred Night' before 'Roaming' rives this EP home with a mix of deft sound designs and pillow dub drums. It's brilliantly introspective.

Review: Almost two years have passed since the first Homecuts 12", a bouncy tech-house revision of Janet Jackson classic 'What Have You Done For Me Lately', starting popping up in stores, so this belated follow-up is undoubtedly long overdue. This time we're treated to two different tracks, both of which bolt bits of classic or forgotten cuts onto sturdy, sub-heavy tech-house grooves. A-side 'Body Dance' adds spoken word snippets to a weighty, thickset groove peppered with simple late-night melodic motifs, while 'Blind Eye' places post hip-house rap rhymes atop a far sleazier and more psychedelic backing track rich in mutant TB-303 motifs, angular-but-smooth bass and clicking drum machine percussion. Like the A-side, it sounds like a guaranteed mid-set winner.

Review: Minimal Man is the legendary studio partnership between Eon (aka Ian Loveday) and Baby Ford. They cooked up some of minimal's most essential tunes some 20-odd years ago and they have become expensive and highly sought after since. This EP is one of them and it features three killer cuts that will move a dancefloor as much today as ever. 'Make A Move' has a pent-up energy and forward drive that sweeps you up and keeps you locked amongst soft hi-hats and vamping chords. Part 2 is a little darker and more mysterious, with the drum loops a little edgier and the mood that bit more mischievous. 'Stay On' closes down with bubbling drum funk and swirling abstract synth world from deep inside some distant nebula in the sky.

Review: The short-lived moniker of Kingpin Cartel comprised techno titan Mark Broom and lost legend CJ Baker. Their output spanned a 5-year period starting in 2005, on which the release of 'Moogie Nights' laid down their methodology; funky abstinations from Broom's usual style of hard, gritty techno. The 'Ghetto' EP was their second and most famous release. Best known for its lead title track, a triumphant techno-funk piece and a prototype for the bright, swanky mode repopularised by the likes of KiNK in recent decades. Also came 'Fishfunk', a wacky cut dipping its on motifs from French house to g-funk, and 'Bottle', a raspy house number replete with bitcrushed chords and domestic, found-sound samples.

Review: The highly politicised Los Angeles collective Ultra Red re-released their superb A16/A17 12" last year. Both tunes were produced entirely from field recordings made during street protests against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington April 16 and 17, 2000 and became secret weapons of DJs like Ricardo Villalobos & Craig Richards. Now, 'A16' gets remixed by underground titans Losoul and The Mole into two club-ready groovers. Losoul goes first with a dry and minimal take that is textured and deep with plenty of absorbing atmosphere. Next up, The Mole goes for a more propulsive sound with glistening tech house drums and icy pads. Both are artful reworks that take you on a mental trip.

Next to investigate that area is Amsterdam-based duo Weval aka Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers. Their new album finds them taking an expansive trip into high energy sounds that are tinged with nostalgia, rich in happy memories and laden with euphoric emotions that will take the dancefloor to a higher place. Part of that energy comes from tapping into the music of their collective youth and their various inspirations which lend this its widescreen sonic palette. Review: Almost two years have passed since M-High made his debut via the wonderfully warming, melodic and timeless-sounding 'Blue Trip EP' on DJ Steaw's House Puff imprint. It's perhaps fitting that his return to action comes via Rutilance Recordings, a label Steaw co-runs with friend-in-music Guunter. The Utrecht-based producer starts solidly with '12 OC Riddim', a dubby chunk of bass-heavy deep house goodness that boasts serious sub weight and pleasingly skippy drums, before opting for a much more spacey-sounding, tech-tinged sound on the similarly bass-heavy 'Leaving Time'. 'Lost In Translation' is a chunkier slab of deep house/dub house fusion full of echoing electronic drum hits and dreamy pads, while Paolo Rocco's remix of '12 OC Riddim' is an intricately programmed, Motor City-influenced chunk of sci-fi deep house excellence.

Review: The sixth UFOs outing is another intergalactic adventure in sonic form and this time at the buttons it's New Balaance, a Mexican artist at the heart of a new wave. Space Jungle though is an apt title for this EP, which kicks off with some stylish breaks and nimble basslines overlaid with lush cosmic arps. 'Space Jungle' (feat Parallax Modulators brings a more pensive mood thanks to the sustained chords and deeper grooves, but subtle acid and chattery perc bring it to life. 'Grantourismo' is a lively and dynamic cut with more swirling synth work while 'Redemption' closes down this quartet of excellent explorations with a mix of 90s prog, techno and breakbeats all imbued with plenty of colour.

Review: Rooting the productions of Frits Wentink in one specific style has always been tough, primarily because he makes quirky, oddball house and techno numbers that draw inspiration from the dust-encrusted, sample-rich haziness of MPC-driven instrumental hip-hop. His latest EP, which arrives on the popular Bobby Donny imprint, is another boundary-blurring affair that's closest in tone and style to deep house, but is as far from 'standard' deep house as you'd expect. It's a great collection of cuts all told, with our picks being the bassline driven, alien-sounding unorthodoxy of 'You Talk Funny', the warped, mind-mangling tech-house-jazz of 'Forestation' and the deliciously hazy, hypnotic dub-house of 'Shred Bread'.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic label is back with a second volume of its dubs series, this time on nice yellow vinyl with Sub Basics and Fletcher given one side each to shine. Sub Basics goes first with 'Mediterranean', a lovely liquid dub with bottomless depths and perfectly smooth, frictionless drums. Lovely soft melodies drift in and out as the echoing hits and icy hi-hats help oil this most heady of grooves. On the flip, Fletcher offers up 'Sludge' which is a little more tense and menacing, with darker bass and more texture as well as distant groaning pads that keep you guessing and on edge.

Review: Modeight's ever growing roster welcomes Loopdeville for this classy new Incase EP which mixes up fractured vocals, buoyant breakbeats and ghostly tech house with plenty of acid. 'Incase' opens top with alien vocal sounds and bouncing kicks next to a soulful vocal plea to make for something full of beguiling contrasts. 'Cleansing' is a smooth and deep one with muted neon chords and a coating of vinyl crackle that is warm and alluring. Review: Sidney Charles prides himself on making chunky house music that is raw but underpinned by a slick sense of swing. His Heavy House Society label is where most of it arrives but now he takes a detour to Nick Curly's long-running Cecille. 'Sonar Plexus' is irresistible European house music with razor sharp hi-hats, synth curlicues to soften the edges and precise drum work. 'Universal Highway' has a retro 90s feel - a sense of rushing endorphins and bobbing drum breaks that get hands in the air and 'Fearless' then gets liquid and funky with its effervescing rhythms and tumbling synth sequences. 'Turnover' closes out with a soulful US house feel and completes one of Charles's best-ever EPs.

Review: Fresh experimental dance cuttage from Jonathan Kaspar for Kompakt, clearly at the label's absolute vanguard for what constitutes boundary-pushing in 2023. A resident at the Gewolbe club in Cologne, Kaspar has surely flexed enough muscles to have worked out what makes the less easy-to-please dance-goer tick - and we think he's cracked it on 'Speicher 127', two tracks indulging weirdo drum-flams and crazy-emotive filter-sweeps respectively. Recalling the work of Barnt, but with perhaps an even more patient approach, the likes of 'Topper' and 'FEZ' are not to be trifled with.

Review: Accented Measures is Kofi Agyeman, an Afro-German producer from Berlin now based in the UK. He started his own self titled label back in 2021 and now its third release - second on vinyl - drops with a real splash. His particular brand of club music is fulsome minimal, with fleshy basslines and smeared cosmic synths on 'Tension' making for a warm opener. The Harry Wills Ataraxia mix is much more direct and punchy, with freaky stabs and acid prickles in a busy arrangement. 'Upfront' (Like U 2 mix) is a bouncy one with feel-good and funky bass and 'PPDB' has a rotator feel with a turbocharged bassline. Serious tackle.

The Candy Dealers get more lithe and elastic with the spraying bass and jumbled percussive house of 'Train Of Thought' and last of all, Asad Rizvi remixes Jevne's 'Moderize' with a funky little bassline and chord vamps that keep you on edge. Review: This is the first release by Taste The Rainbow, a new vinyl-only label founded by Seizun, a duo consiting of Benjamin Joseph and t.na with a string of releases on Constant Black, Aesthetic, Day Dream, Before, Moving People, Cira Groove, Peoples and Into The Woods already under theior respective belts. 'Bare Maximum' and 'Battery Gate', which effortlessly work in endless shuffles and variations between their relatively bare-bones skeletons, are examples of an unusually layered and textured form of minimal techno, while friends of the label Lizz and Kearun each remix a track in fine fashion too.
