Although this Illinois-birthed phenomenon of American Football has largely become known as an essential building block in the lineage of 'emo', its origins were extremely disparate, rising from the jazzy post-rock and hardcore of Cap'n Jazz and Joan Of Arc yet taking on board both the minimalism of Steve Reich and the gloomy songcraft of The Smiths and The Cure to form a dreamlike and impressionistic sound whose cult-status has grown exponentially in the seventeen years since it first saw the light of day. Still possessed of a freshness and deftness of touch that have made its sparkling guitar lines and jazzy inflections fit for the ages, 'American Football' is less a wistful look backwards as an album that remains a blueprint for the future.
