Having firmly established himself in the higher echelons of underground techno and electro via a string of killer releases under the Defekt and E.S.S aliases, Matt Flanagan has decided to take on a new pseudonym. His first outing as Octal Step is a typically forthright affair, with dancefloor domination his clear aim. Opener "Step To Disenchantment" is a no-holds-barred roller, with near psychedelic acid lines rising and falling over a surging, thrill-a-minute techno groove. The acid experimentation continues on the raw, rough and distorted "I'll Be Your Virtual Technician" - all manic drum machine cowbell hits, fizzing electronics and mutant TB-303 lines - while flipside "Muscle Memory" sees Flanagan make merry with booming kick drums, thrusting bass and fizzing electronic motifs.
