Former Coil man Timothy Lewis' work under the Thighpaulsandra alias has always been hard to pigeonhole, variously touching on abstraction, experimental electronics, modern classical, experimental jazz, space rock and industrial, usually wrapped in deliberately provocative themes or artwork. The Golden Communion, his latest full-length missive under the pseudonym, touches on all of these styles, joining them together into a two-hour journey that more than one critic has called a "psycho-musical" narrative. Peculiarly, there are moments of genuinely beguiling sweetness - see the baggy, beatless indie-pop of "Valerie" and "A Devil In Every Hedgerow" - amongst the worthy and next-level experiments. Generally, though, it's when he lets himself go - as on the 20-minute title track's wayward ambience - that Golden Communion really soars.
