  1. Droid (6:11)
  2. Droid (Inland remix) (6:04)
  3. Droid (Cassegrain remix) (6:15)
Review: BNJMN's take on techno has never been fixed, though in recent times he's happily been focused on the more robust, forthright end of the style. Droid neatly fits into this category, with the track sitting somewhere between the dust-encrusted, distorted sound favoured by the likes of L.I.E.S and Lobster Theremin, the end-of-days intensity of Berceuse Heroique's output, and good old-fashioned techno funk. It fizzes, clanks and throbs in all the right places, with just the right amount of metallic pressure and mind-bending electronic chicanery. The accompanying remixes are strong, too. There's a bouncy, surging interpretation from Inland that should please all those who like 'no nonsense' techno, and a pulsating, EBM-influenced interpretation from Cassegrain.

  6. Poly Evolver #2 (1:36)
Review: Having earned his corn in the back office of Rush Hour's Amsterdam HQ, Olf Van Elden is now making his mark as a producer. Previously, he's released fizzing, far-sighted techno and house on Voyage Direct and Tape Records Amsterdam. Here, he delivers his most expansive - and arguably strongest - 12" to date for former employers Rush Hour. There's much to admire, from the pulsing analogue motifs and clanking drum machine percussion of "Cable 54" and semi-ambient gorgeousness of "Poly Evolver #1", to the thumping, industrial-influenced modular throb of "Poly Evolver #2". Arguably best of all, though, are his two hook-ups with Jeroen. Choose between the flitting electronic melodies, snappy beats and dreamy chords of "Prototype", and the drowsy, EBM-goes-Detroit brilliance of "Ama Driver".

  1. Blood Is Truth (Metaphenethylamine mix) (8:00)
  2. Blood Is Truth (Leaders Of The Wild Hunt mix) (6:53)
Review: Dutch imprint Bio Rhythm has been on fire of late, serving up thrillingly muscular and intense 12" singles from Africans With Mainframes, Marco Bernadi, Brassfoot and DeViere. Here, they introduce us to the previously unheralded Mirror Man, an alias for a "mean mother f*cker" who is better known under his usual pseudonym. Whoever's behind the project is clearly not happy, because A-side "Blood Is Truth (Metaphenethylamine Mix)" is a bleak treat, with stomach-churning electronics and druggy arpeggio lines riding a sturdy but hissing techno rhythm. Leaders Of The Wild Hunt go for a slightly more musically expansive approach on their remix, which boasts snappier drum machine hits, bittersweet chords, and all manner of melancholic melodies.

Don't Stop No Sleep (remixes)

Cat: NONPLUS 033. Rel: 04 Jul 16
  1. Don't Stop, No Sleep (Robert Hood remix) (6:47)
  2. Don't Stop, No Sleep (Tale Of Us remix) (7:31)
  3. Don't Stop, No Sleep (Roman Poncet & DJ Deep remix) (6:55)
Review: With releases this year from Skudge, Eduardo De La Calle, Redshape, Blawan (remixing Source Direct), and Shlomi Aber, its fair to say Nonplus have been attacking the form of techno from various angles. This latest 12" finds Boddika returning to a 2014 Nonplus highlight, Radio Slave's "Don't Stop, No Sleep" and enlist a trio of current techno heavyweights to remix it. Robert Hood understandably takes centre stage with an A Side effort that is classic booming, hypnotic techno in the M-Plant mould - definitely one for the big rooms! On the flip, Tale Of Us take the track into more pared back, spectral territory whilst Tresor pair Roman Poncet & DJ Deep rival Hood's effort with a full throttle remix.

  1. Running Dry (5:32)
  2. My Ears Hurt (4:46)
  3. Rendell Pips (4:22)
  4. Music For Two Kalimbas (5:37)
Review: It was undoubtedly a smart move by Dekmantel to ask Randomer to deliver the second installment in their UFO Series, which focuses on more the experimental, off-kilter and futuristic end of the techno spectrum. The sometime L.I.E.S, Clone and Numbers man hits the spot from the start, coming on like Aphex Twin on the IDM-goes-techno flex of "Running Dry". "My Ears Hurt" is a straight-up distorted techno throbber, while "Rendell Pips" somehow manages to fuse melodious, Artificial Intelligence era IDM positivity with African style, drum machine polyrhythms. He maintains a similar focus on "Music For Two Kalimbas", a thrillingly tropical techno stomper built around haunting melody lines.

  1. Dark Desire (7:24)
  2. Love Fantasy (4:32)
  3. No Time (8:22)
Review: If the atmospheric darkness, droning electronics and off-kilter drum machine rhythms of Earth Disorders Part 1 is anything to go by, Retrograde Youth could soon become the most famous export from Medellin since Pablo Escobar. The Colombian producer's debut 12" is quietly impressive, with opener "Dark Desire" joining the dots between mildly threatening EBM, the sparse feel of Motor City electro, and the inebriated melodiousness of classic Orbital. He gets undeniably intense on the fizzing, acid-laden moodiness of "No Time", while "Love Fantasy" sounds like classic Cabaret Voltaire brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

  1. How Does It Feel To Feel? (8:36)
  2. Object Of Interest (6:21)
  3. The Mascara Snake (5:32)
Review: In the press release to promote Ulysses' latest EP on The Bunker NYC, the producer muses at length on the definition of techno, and his desire to break the rules. So, while opener "How Does It Feel To Feel" bears many of the hallmarks of experimental, industrial-tinged techno - dark noises, throbbing kick-drum patterns, distorted electronics, and so on - it weighs in at a house-friendly 121 beats per minute. "Object Of Interest" moves further away from techno's "safe space", with intergalactic electronics and bubbling synthesizer stabs riding an out-there, IDM inspired broken rhythm. As for "The Mascara Snake", it sounds like the sort of long lost, slowed-down Japanese synth-pop jam that many would consider "Balearic".

Review: Those familiar with the Strange Life label operated by Danny Wolfers will know it's rife with CDr material worthy of the vinyl format. Whilst our personal favourite (the bizarre Portopia by Wolfers alias Satomi Taniyama) remains looked over by labels, Berceuse Heroique were responsible for a quite sumptuous double LP edition of Smackos album The Age Of Candy Candy earlier this year. Now local Den Haag crew BAKK have got their hands on 2004 Strange Life album Dark Days for an equally classy triple LP edition. Wolfers fans not familiar with this album will immediately fall in love with Dark Days, thanks to the signature blend of goofy track titles ("Lego Resistance", "An Obnoxious Affair On Tape") and music that veers from soaring, synth vistas to grotty techno via cold, primitive electronics and more.

Review: Zurich's mighty Lux Rec return with their latest offering which sees Greek producer June debut his new Prosopo alias, which roughly translated means 'face'. Fans of Tsampikos Fronas's extensive work as June will delight at the Berlin-based producer extending himself on this eponymous debut Prosopo album which is something of a creepy, ghostly, unearthly delight. The six tracks are full of post-horror electronics, metallic percussion hits, dark electro rhythms, macabre techno throw-downs, and aural visions of the apocalypse. It's hugely entertaining stuff, all told, even if the odd tracks sounds like it was sent to the mastering studio via a mid '90s style dial-up modem and a crusty old phone line.

  14. Function/Inland - "Colwyn Bay" (11:08)
  15. Silent Servant - "End/Optimism" (1:53)
Review: According to Infrastructure NYC head Function, this compilation was compiled like an album and involves not only the core group of artists but also connects the dots between the label's past, his Berghain 07 mix CD for Ostgut Ton, the legendary Sandwell District days and the respective history of the artists. Infrastructure Facticity spans "a narrative ranging from lush, ambient electronics and post-club diversions, to contemporary club techno and back again." British artist Robert McNally provides the artwork and musically the highlights are not so much the dancefloor ready bangers, which are mainly quite good, rather the moments of restraint such as Vatican Shadow's brooding and almost Boards Of Canada sounding "Swords Over Paradise", the slow burning reduced acid of Cassegrain & Tin Man's "Open Sea" and Rrose's finest moment yet, "Cephalon", which can barely be described in words!

Review: Vanguard Sound returns with a new joint from Amir Alexander in the shape of the dramatically titled 12", The Morpheus Project! According to the label, these four cuts from Alexander are "the culmination of over a decade of research into the hidden mysteries that dictate the workings of the power structure of the world we live in." In such a politically tumultuous age, such records are so very prescient. The research Vanguard Sound refer to is presented in lyrical form as Alexander references "situations and phenomenon hiding in plain sight" over some typically rugged, and admittedly rather fierce productions.

  3. Dublicator - "Souldance" (6:48)
  4. Biodub - "Napoli" (7:36)
Review: The Espectrum compilation series from AvantRoots has apparently been a year in the making, with the label striving to pull together only the finest exponents in Dub Techno. Volume 1 arrived back in April and set a pretty high bar in terms of quality, but AvantRoots have truly outdone themselves with this second edition. The label say they set out with a very precise idea for Espectrum, looking for tracks that were "carefully built with hypnotic, obscure, dense, and magical sounds with an eternal hook." It's no surprise to see the godlike figure Deepchord present and correct then, with the truly remarkable opening track "LS3/5a". From here, "Mozambique (Babylon mix)" sees Euphorion draw us deeper into the dub, whilst Duplicator's "Souldance" offers a more genteel take on the genre. Biobub rounds it out with the dancefloor cut "Napoli". Here's hoping for many more editions of the Espectrum!

Review: Chris Spero and Alex Jones really found their sound a few years ago when teaming up as Dense & Pika. Those first couple of releases on their eponymous imprint are the stuff of legend now, not to mention the ones that followed up on Scuba's esteemed Hotflush imprint. For the Calf EP, it's served up courtesy of Adam Beyer's Drumcode, a fitting home for their tough and functional techno tools. Wasting no time messing around with the peak time destroyer 'Edging Forward" which chugs through the audio spectrum like a steamtrain, there's more adrenalin to be found on the dusty and stripped industrialism of "Drag 'N Drop" which is reminiscent of the Klockworks or the Fachwerk sound. We also enjoyed the Chicago hard house sounding title track, which gives an obvious nod to Windy City legends like Relief Records or Kne' Deep.

  1. Full House (7:21)
  2. Another Way To Go (5:05)
Review: When 2016 draws to a close and we look back on Alan Fitzpatrick's year, his Fabric 87 mix will probably be seen as the UK techno producer's crowning glory, but he's also put out some fine 12"s this year. The Full House 12" (on purple vinyl no less) sees Fitzpatrick return to ESD Records and follows on from recent singles on Drumcode and 17 Steps. You know what to expect here: finely crafted DJ tools that any self-respecting techno selector will find plenty of usage in. The title cut craftily unfurls from a tightly-wound percussive groove into a dramatic dancefloor burner over its seven-minute duration, whilst the tingling, fluttering "Another Way To Go" has more than an air of Motor City futurism to it.

Review: On this latest stamped, white-label missive, Glaswegian analogue fiends General Ludd has switched the loving arms of New York's Mister Saturday Night for hometown giants Rub-A-Dub. RAD-LUDD 1 delivers a quartet of energetic, jammed-out machine workouts, from the Syclops-influenced stomp of "Fourth Wall" and intense, tribal jack of "Run, Don't Play Dead", to the loose-limbed, jazz-goes-jack vibes of "Open Back Of The Meat Van". Best of all, though, is "Cunninghame Shame", a delicious fusion number that boasts throbbing sub-bass, metallic synth stabs, bouncy pianos and Dego style broken beats. That's what it sounds like to us, at least; it's deliciously difficult to pin down.

Review: Tracks from Liam Blackburn's recent Ancestral Voices album get the remix treatment. As expected, Abdulla Rashim's take on "Invocations" is an understated dub techno affair, its deep textures threatening to seep out through the Swedish producer's heavy bass tones. In stark contrast is ASC & Sam KDC's take on "Feathered Serpent". Although it is sub-titled the 'grey mix', a more appropriate name might be the 'dark techno from Hades' rework. Over splintered beats and ticking, percussion, the pair deliver a moody, gut-busting bass and filters that churn and groan with the force of a stormy, grey sea. It's a universe away from Rashim's studied calm.

Title cut "Vegetation" sets the scene with a murky, swamped-out techno fuzz that sounds a little like the soundtrack to an apocalypse, a blur of the senses that is swiftly followed by the more militaristic beats of the equally fuzzy 'Soak" - what a tip! On the flip, "Funnel" waves its distorted bleeps through heavy kicks and snares, "Radiator" a certified Container head banger, and the final tune "Insulation" is a broken medley of bass, drums and pure grit. Sick.

Review: Johannes Auvinen aka Tin Man sure has proven himself to be the reigning acid master with a mastery over that little silver Roland box that's possibly unmatched. Back on LA home turf Acid Test, he this time teams up with Manchester duo Jozef K and Winter Son for the Fates Unknown EP for some truly soulful and emotive deep house featuring Tin Man's unmistakeable synth leads over some sombre piano and pad led deepness on the title track. Interdimensional Transmissions Erika from Detroit reworks the track into a more lo-fi and dusty rendition yet retaining Tin Man's gnarly 303 work; you could imagine them dropping this one at No Way Back that's for sure. On the flip is yet another gorgeously emotive epic in the form of "Pendle By Night" which proves to everyone just how you make a dark journey track with the perfectly executed dance floor drama.

Review: Haunting and driving techno delight with a house touch for late night movement, from Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour aka STEREOGAMOUS. Two masters of saunatechno, two icons of Australian music, two friends that make magic together on the reg. Remixers of LCD Soundsystem, Kylie Minogue and The Presets. Paul is an ARIA Award winning legend, from his ITCH-E & SCRATCH-E project to his work with Silverchair and beyond. Jonny aka Seymour Butz is half of homodisco ravesupreme KOOKY, a renowned hug enthusiast and one of Australia's most revered soundtrack curators. Together they are a supreme duo whose musical taste is beyond redoubt. Deejays par excellence, musicians who push the boundaries, this EP is the sound of a summer in love in Berlin and thought over in a Sydney winter. Pressed exclusively on 100 180g vinyl records only. This will never be re-pressed. Listen.
