  2. Ne-Decline A (121 Roland MC 303) (7:43)
  3. O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

  2. Endless Horizon (8:58)
  3. Walk Below The Waters (7:13)
  4. Wandering Aimlessly (6:56)
Review: Between Northern Electronics, Semantica, and Dimensional Exploration, techno deviant Acronym has built himself quite a reputation for conjuring the coldest, most mechanical sort of techno. In case you didn't get it, we think he's a master at the genre, and he's right up there on our list of favourite contemporaries alongside the likes of Abdulla Rashim. This new EP comes courtesy of the fledgling Auxiliary label, and it starts off by setting a cinematic scene through the hollow sounds of "Final Descent", a placid glow of harmonies which transform into an apocalyptic chain of metallic percussion on "Endless Horizon". "Walk Below The Waters" continues this mood on the flipside, thanks to a jittering artillery of drums and hi-hats that have been glued together by the raucous, minimalistic melodies suspended in the mid-end of the tune, only to be washed-out in the comparatively more diluted and tranquil whirlpool called 'Wandering Aimlessly".

  4. Technoid (5:12)
Review: Apart from a fabulously 90s style website and a few YouTube videos, Activ Analog remains a pretty mysterious name. Could it be a him, a her, or even a them? We're not sure. However, we are and have been continuously impressed by their music over the past fifteen or so years. That's right, Activ Analog was first spotted in 1999, and the artist(s) has continued to release sporadically ever since, with the last two years seeing a sudden rise in new material. Assemble Music is the label to host these cold and utterly palatable techno cuts; four killer tunes that contain a distinctly analog sound to them. "Undertow" is a chilly warehouse driller with subtle waves of acid, while "Traction Time" is coated in a much more vivid 'house' framework. The B-side features another two tunes, the bouncy, militant industrial techno joint named "Lifeline", and the deeper, more pensive sonic landscapes of "Technoid".

Review: Despite the fact that Adam 'X' Mitchell has two high-profile projects on the go - ADMX-71 and Traversable Wormhole - he has still managed to craft this hard-hitting release under his own name. Bedeviled starts with "Antagonistic" which yields pile-driving kicks; hissing piston percussion and horror chord stabs. "Psychological Tormentor" comes next. Like Traversable Wormhole on steroids it certainly lives up to its title thanks to its gut-busting bass and malignant stepping rhythm. Rounding off this display of techno ferocity is "Breaking Thru Your Force Field" where Mitchell pits a murderous grungy bass against cold trance riffs for a ride through the darkest alleys of cyber-punk terror.

Review: For the third release on their admirable Melliflow label, Vera and Alexandra have turned to newcomer And.Rea, AKA debutant Andrea La Pietra. As first outings go, it's pretty darn good, with the previously unknown producer offering up eight impressive cuts over two weighty slabs of wax. After opening with the off-kilter, intergalactic funk of "Low Connection", La Pietra variously turns his hand to deep and spacey techno ("15 Ways To Make A Record"), bubbly Detroit futurism ("Microcosm"), bruk-influenced electro warmth ("Monday To Sunday", "Bubble Motion"), bleep-heavy jack-tracks ("Why On Earth"), and deeper, woozier fare ("Mutual Attraction"). Throughout, he manages to get a near perfect balance between spacey dreaminess and punchy, dancefloor-friendly grooves.

Review: Famously, Joey Anderson delivered the first 12" on Acid Test's experimentally minded offshoot, Avenue 66. That was Under The Cherry Moon, one of the lauded New Jersey producer's finest releases to date. Happily, Anderson's belated return to Avenue 66 is equally as impressive. There's much to admire throughout, from the rising and falling synthesizer refrains of "If One Cares, They Act Different", to the deep, mystical and wonderfully picturesque deep house thrills of B-side cut "Vase", which is undoubtedly one of Anderson's most beautiful tracks to date. The track in between, "Peace There", also impresses via metronomic kick drums, dreamy chords, and crystalline synthesizer melodies.

Review: Italy's Andrea is now a trusted member of the Ilian Tape collective, having only released for the German label thus far. But, why would he go elsewhere? These guys are on fire, and releasing some of the most interesting shades of industrial 4/4 these days. This is his fourth EP for the throng, and "Floating" starts off with a beatless, wide-eyed landscape of soft pads to introduce the twisted, shifting, break-driven tech of "Timed". "Queue A", on the flip of the disc, is a driving pile of rusty kick drums and oceanic pads that head into the deeper end of the techno sphere, while "22:22" goes all-out on the jungle patterns with its broken groove that recalls the likes of LTJ Bukem or Dego at their more pacy moods. A killer of an EP!

Review: Greek experimental techno producer in Berlin ANFS is a staple of the Inner Surface Music collective and presents another excursion in difficult greyscale listening. Starting out with the ultraviolence of "Blood Trophy" with its body bashing bass assault and overdriven drones washing over you with blatant fury, there's then the broken beat industrial techno onslaught of "VPA" which will appeal to fans of Talker or Simon Shreeve. By the way Repitch man D. Carbone aka Honzo steps up to deliver a seething and slow burning remix. Finally, strap yourself in for the abrasive soundscape of modular abuse on "Zevra".

  4. Stars (Tin Man remix) (6:39)
Review: Ukrainian techno duo Animous have grown fast over the last few years, and they've set themselves a pretty high bar thanks to some excellent EPs. We now expect the best from them, and that's precisely what they give us here with these four warehouse fillers. "Avers" is slow and could be associated to the house end of the dance spectrum, but its sounds are dark and convoluted enough to make it a tune that would appeal to the darker DJ minds out there, and the same can be said for "Revers" and its perfect balance between calm and frenetic. "Stars" features Vladislava Lefor on the vocals, and its a magical acid house number on a truly deep vibe, but bid don Tin Man brings the acid out in the best way possible through his remix and, of course, with his trademark style. Don't snooze on it.

Review: Perc Trax has commissioned some of techno's most respected artists to rework tracks from Ansome's debut album. First up is the titan tag team that is O/V/R. In James Ruskin and Regis' hands, "Snake Eyes" turns into a cavernous broken beat track laden down with haunted vocals. For his part, Perc keeps a straight focus for the heads-down techno version of "Bad Blood", while Randomer turns "Back Alley Sally" into a labyrinth of doubled up drums and shuffling rhythms. The last remix is left to the newest artist but Ossian doesn't disappoint and his take on "Blackwater" is a wild, analogue acid workout that recalls the wild sonic excesses of Woody McBride.

Review: Bari, Puglia based SUBOSC is helmed by producer Kaelan and presents four excursions through the more hypnotic and cerebral strains of techno. Berlin's Artefakt starts off on the A side with with the trance inducing reductionism of "Curvature Of Mind", while Italian Alan Backdrop returns after what seems like a long absence from the scene, but he's back in form on the exquisite sound design of "Quaraman". On the flip there's Kiwi Ben Gibson with the Millsian touch of "Floating Shadows" which will certainly draw you down into the abyss, while local duo Tripsolate & Redundaent offer up something a bit more different on the electro/dub techno crossover of "Akay" and as unusual as this hybrid must sound, it really works and is truly a highlight. Tip!

Review: Asusu is of course a founding member of Livity Sound alongside Pev and Kowton, yet we've not been graced with some material from him on the label for something approaching three years! He's not exactly been silent with Asusu setting up his own Impasse label last year, but we are always going to be happy at the sight of a new Livity 12" from the producer. "Hallucinator" is particularly impressive, with Stennet lacing woozy, psychedelic, acid-flecked motifs over a bouncy, electro-influenced techno rhythm. Flipside "Sendak" explores similar sonic territory, with droning, Eastern-influenced electronics shuffling across the sound space. This is underpinned by a dense but surprisingly fluid rhythm track, which rolls along impressively whilst emphasizing the producer's weighty kick drums, skittish snares and arms-flailing swing.

Review: The YAY Recordings label has only been around for one year, but we're already feeling the heat from all angles. We love imprints that come up with new and exciting talent, especially when they're releasing techno as loose and heartfelt as this four-tracker from newcomer Audri. "Droid" kicks things into motion with a blurry haze of washed-out electronics, but it's "Smashin'" that spins our heads around and gets us nodding up and down to its minimal yet pulsating groove. On the flip, "Indeed" is closer to the electro end of the spectrum thanks to its metallic percussion and brittle arrangement, whereas "Ain't No Shit" unleashes a devilish little techno number that sits just right with us. More YAY, please...

She does that well, re-casting Avery's upbeat original as a clanging, clandestine chunk of trippy, feverish, late night techno full of infected electronics, creepy pads, and soft-focus rhythms. Fellow experimentalist Abdulla Rashim picks up the baton on the flip, delivering a version of "Clear" built around dense, pulsating percussion, ghostly electronics, and occasionally confused offbeat kick-drums. It's far bolder and more obviously club-ready than the A-side, but a little less intriguing.

Review: Armon 'Aybee' Bazile is undoubtedly one of electronic music's most consistent performers. He's barely put a foot wrong since making his debut in 2004, and continues to deliver high-grade material on a regular basis. Predictably, there's plenty to get excited about on this 12", too. "Man Over Machine" is a winding, constantly building gem, with rising and falling, spaced out melody loops riding an off-kilter techno rhythm. On the flip, you'll find the deep space chord progressions, delay-laden electronics and deep tech-house grooves of "Build Them (Solstice Mix)", the intricate pianos solos and Soichi Terada style deep house vibes of "Legacy", and the off-kilter deep house/IDM fusion of "Melted Chains".
