Lose It (12")
Cat: ACRE 062 . Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Lose It (6:34)
  2. Wrong Move (5:57)
Review: Ayman Rostom has really taken to The Maghreban, with a succession of singles for Versatile and his own Zoot label that have shown him fully capable of bringing his sampling talents to the realm of house, disco and techno. The latest missive from The Maghreban comes on Black Acre, a label Rostom has previous with after that superb library music LP as Dr. Zygote a few years back. Two tracks deep, Lose It presents all that we love about The Maghreban; the title track sees a classic "girl I'm starting to lose it" phrase lifted off an early jungle classic from Boogie Times Tribe assembled with a monstrous analogue bassline and plenty of feverish effects tweaking in the mix. "Wrong Move" is just as smart, delving into the darkest depths of rugged breakbeat science.

Iron Lungs (12")
Cat: TIMEDANCE 005 . Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Iron Lungs (6:45)
  2. Number 24 (5:42)
  3. Footprints In Solid Rock (5:37)
Review: Ploy is a new project from Bristol-dweller Sam Smith, who previously impressed as Samuel via 12" singles on Idle Hands and Not So Much. This EP for Batu's increasingly impressive Timedance comes hot on the heels of a stellar Ploy 12" for Hessle Audio. He begins with the jazzy cymbals, spooky textures, heavy bass, ghostly electronics and metronomic techno pulse of "Iron Lungs", before exploring African style tribal rhythms on the ethno-techno drum workout "Number 24". Another superb three-tracker concludes with the blazed, bass-heavy broken techno shuffle of "Footprints In Soil", where Smith makes great use of quietly weighty sub-bass and pleasingly crispy snare hits.

Cat: OTON 96. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. LAGEOS 1 (5:56)
  2. Nucleon (7:56)
  3. Helios (6:50)
  4. Spectrum V (6:05)
Review: Given his usual productivity and regular release schedule, it's something of a surprise to find that Helium Sessions is Tobias Freund's first solo single for two years. Typically, the Ostgut Ton man is in a bleak mood, expertly fusing dense, high-octane drums, horror-influenced electronics, creepy textures and paranoid field recordings on superb opener "LAGEOS 1". "Helios" increases the tempo further via seemingly sped-up drum patterns and grandiose, room-filling chords, while closer "Spectrum V" throws a little industrial attitude into the mix - alongside skittish, pitched-downm jungle-style breakbeats - to complete the paranoid, dystopian mood. This latter track is particularly bold, suggesting that Freund has found his voice again after a period away from the limelight.

Nervous Sex Traffic (12" reeditado)
Cat: DKMNTL 033. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Nervous Sex Traffic (9:04)
  2. Mount Grace (5:57)
Review: Call Super first met the Dekmantel crew last year, one of many high profile DJs to play their summer festival in Amsterdam and it wasn't long before the esteemed Dutch imprint asked him to supply them with an EP. Impressively, Nervous Sex Traffic is one of his strongest 12" singles to date - no mean feat given his track record - with the title track, in particular, delivering thrills in spades. Stretching out over nine mesmerizing minutes, it overlays snappy, analogue-sounding beats and cowbell hits with alien bleep melodies, synthesized horn stabs, rich bass, and pads that recall Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls". It's a melodious, eyes-closed treat, all told. Flip for "Mount Grace", a deeper, more metallic affair that draws inspiration from vintage Detroit techno, blissful electro, and the morning-after confusion of ambient house.

Acido 22 (12" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: ACIDO 022. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Track 1 (12:11)
  2. Track 2 (11:06)
Review: Any new 12" from Gerard Hanson is worthy of note, but there's something extra-exciting about this one. Fantastically, it sees him don the familiar Convextion alias - first used way by in 1995 - for the first time since 2007 for the latest 12" on Dynamo Dreesen's ever excellent Acido label. Boasting two long, slowly unfurling concoctions, Acido 22 is up there with his greatest work (and that's saying something). Thrillingly, it eschews the deep, spacey electro sound with which he made his name, instead turning to beat-less ambience; kind of Convextion does Pete Namlook, if you will. Both tracks are suitably sublime, with stretched-out chords, classical-style melodic movements, and memorable tunes that develop organically over the course of 11 or 12 minutes. Making great ambient music is hard, but Hanson knows exactly what he's doing.

Review: The next release on Subject Detroit is the result of two Techno Titans joining forces.

Label head DJ Bone presents a Subject Detroit first, a split-release with none other than the mighty Deetron. The two have been fans of each other's work for many years so this seemed like a most logical idea.

Side D (D for Deetron) sees Deetron in impeccable form with 3 uniquely different versions of his masterpiece "The Core". The Core takes you on a deliberate journey from Deetron's Swiss roots straight to Detroit, one foot in the House realm, the other firmly planted in the funky domain of Techno. Strong, driving rhythms escort you through the vibe to an amazing crescendo and back. There are three versions to choose from, each creating a different energy for the floor.

Side B (B for Bone) houses DJ Bone's "Black Patterns". Black Patterns is a true advancement and update to the Detroit Techno model. The main mix starts off in true DJ Bone fashion, hitting you right in the face, with a succession of beautiful piano stabs. A voice chanting "Black Patterns" echoes in announcing what is about to unfold. Uptempo, rhythmic, untamed drums arrive to complete this immense vibe. All three versions tell their stories and indicate that DJ Bone's upcoming album is going to be one hell of a release. If Techno, House and Jazz had a baby...his name would be Black Patterns.

This is the first in a series of releases by the duo. And to further enhance their endeavor Deetron and DJ Bone will begin touring together in 2016. They will be playing solo as well as back-to-back and will debut several unreleased tracks during their sets.
