SUPERVISION 02
Cat: SUPERVISION 02. Rel: 24 Feb 23
Bon - "Coal Mining" (5:44)
Mjog - "Whition" (4:50)
Glockta - "Here Come The Pretzels" (5:37)
Max Casebolt X Raynor - "Adversary" (3:30)
Groovy D - "Tell Me" (7:03)
Oldboy - "Fast Track Funk" (4:39)
Review: A six-track UK garage smorgasbord comes courtesy of Supervision, making it very clearly known that their artists are masters at replicating the time-honoured practice, at least in garage, of 'not overthinking it'. From the off - BOn's 'Coal-Mining' - we're struck by the charmingly loose rhythmic quality of this EP, which rails against the glossy pomp of 'nu-garage'. Familiar names such as MJOG crop up with dark breaks-inflected fillers, while further highlights include the bassliney 'Here Come The Pretzels' by Glockta and the glitchy, sultry, stop-starty wobbler 'Tell Me'.

Closer Than Close (Mentor club mix) (7:31)
Closer Than Close (Tuff Jams Even Closer) (7:01)
Closer Than Close (Frankie Classic club mix) (10:20)
Review: Rosie Gaines will also be synonymous with her smash hit single 'Closer Than Close' (also the name of her fifth album) which now gets reissued by the Demon Record Singles Club. Gaines actually started her career back in 1985 when she perfumed and recorded with The Curtis Ohlson Band but it was when she was a member of Prince & The New Power Generation that she really got noticed. Her Closer Than Close album came in 1995 and soon after she was dropped by Motown, but a remix of the title track a year so so later arrived in club land on bootleg and sold over eight million copies around the world.

Inside Your Mind (5:41)
To The Beat (5:33)
Morgans Vibe (6:17)
Review: Back in 1994 UK garage was still in an embryonic stage, with the bumping US sound still defining the style even as a darker, moodier strain was starting to come through. From the legendary Nice n Ripe crew came this 12" of heavyweight pressure, and while the G.O.D. tag wound up being used by other producers, on this Limited release it was the work of Grant Nelson and Si Firmin. The A side cut 'Inside Your Mind' is an intense, heads down workout which nods to the likes of Chez N Trent, while 'To The Beat' bring a rougher vibe with mammoth subs and manic sampling that points to the future in no uncertain terms.

Check Me Out
Cat: PILOT 15. Rel: 11 Mar 24
Check Me Out (6:52)
Spark Plug (6:58)
For You (6:58)
What's That (Refix) (7:05)
Review: It's hard to keep up with the hugely prolific output of UK don Burnski and his several different labels these days but one thing is for sure - Pilot keeps on serving up the goods. For its 15th release, the tech and minimal focussed label welcomes Robin Graham who opens up with the lively and colourful synths of bustling groover 'Check Me Out'. 'Spark Plug' is more business-like - the dry drums and hits overlaid with retro chord stabs that amp up the crowd and 'For You' then gets loose and funky with some twisted and sugar synths over garage-flecked beats and 'What's That' (Refix) offers a jumbled percussive sound full of dynamism.

Soul 'N Mind (hand-stamped 12")

Soul 'N Mind (Brokenstep main mix) (5:15)
Soul 'N Mind (Drop & Pop dub mix) (5:17)
Soul 'N Mind (Brokenstep instrumental) (5:17)
Review: Groove Chronicles are as legendary as it comes when you're talking about garage acts. They have such a rich legacy and it dates as far back as 1997. The dup known as Noodles & Dubchild are now back with another 12" that is going to fly off the shelves and offer up their much sought-after Brokenstep edits. These have been getting big time plays from influencers like Gilles Peterson and Bradley Zero and take in sax-led good time grooves, bustling broken beats and blissed-out instrumentals.

Time Is Now Allstars Volume 3
Cat: TIN 024. Rel: 10 Jun 22
Y U QT - "Pick Me Up" (4:22)
Cortese - "Regatta" (4:58)
Prozak - "Next To You" (4:46)
Yosh - "To Me" (5:31)
Main Phase - "Pull Up Tool" (6:18)
Groovy D - "Wun4Me" (5:26)
Review: The Time Is Now crew are just unstoppable, and as if you needed more proof here's a new batch from their Allstars series. These 12"s give serious bang for your buck, with six heaters packed in, all guaranteed to get the dance going buckwild. Y U QT leads in with the sneaky stepper 'Pick Me Up', followed up by the slender, sophisticated 2-step delights of Cortese and Prozak's bright, bold and bouncy 'Next To You'. On the flip the prolific Yosh drops some dexterous breakbeat damage like only he knows how, Main Phase gets into the cheekiest of club smashers and Groovy D offers up something moody and soulful.

Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.
