The Rhythm People EP
Cat: RNV 09. Rel: 10 Jun 24
Marc Cotterell - "96 Is Back" (6:45)
Jason Ward - "The Meaning" (4:48)
J Erazo - "The Pulse" (5:34)
Paul French - "Jump" (unreleased dub) (6:00)
Review: Rhythm N Vibe treats us to four different and equally brilliant garage cuts here from four different and equally brilliant artists. Marc Cotterell opens up with the slinky and dusty drums of '96 Is Back' powered by a rasping bassline. Jason Ward then brings some fresh 90s sounds with a neon baseline and diva vocals on 'The Meaning' while J Erazo keeps it deep and paired back on the sublime 'The Pulse' which is a real late night warmer. Paul French then layers up nice fresh and bumping drum funk on his lovely number 'Jump' (unreleased dub). There is lots to love here on a very useful EP.

Wanna Be With You (6:33)
Let’s Dance (5:59)
Donny (6:12)
Show Some Love (6:44)
Review: The Plastik People label is a great repository for deep house that is timeless but never tired. Katermurr is next up to prove that point with an EP that transcends the ages. It opens with a lovely throwback Chicago vocal over fresh modern drums. After 'Wanna Be With You' gets you going, 'Let's Dance' brings the party vibes with some busy lead melodies that will get hands in the air old school style. 'Donny' then keeps it deep with some languid grooves and a nice smoky soulful vocal drifting above. Last of all is the more bumping and dusty drums of 'Show Some Love' to close out a classic EP.

Checkpoint (5:30)
The Going Is Rough (5:38)
Beat 93 (5:33)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: If you're reading this then you will know that Instinct is one of the UK's powerhouse garage labels. Run by Burnski aka James Burnham it deals in serious tackle for rude boys and nasty girls. The drums hit hard, the reversed bassline burn goose old school cool and there gun finger salutes come thick and fast throughout this EP from Mance. 'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

Follow Me (6:34)
Frequency (5:14)
Underwater (6:30)
Review: Burnski and Kelper are two of the hottest artists in the game right now - their output is relentless, and their quality is always high. It is now on the former's Constant Sound that they appear with three fresh new collaborative cuts aimed squarely at the floor. 'Follow Me' has nice hooky drum loops and subtle synth stabs under a seductive vocal. It's fun and functional in equal measure and on the flip things get more naughty with hints of a dirty speed garage bassline under 'Frequency'. The vibe flips again on closer 'Frequency' which has disco-tinged loops and more laidback groves that bring a little warmth and sunshine.

Review: A Grand Don't Come for Free is a poignant narrative crafted by Mike Skinner, transcending typical hip-hop tropes with its intimate exploration of everyday life and relationships. Skinner's awkward yet charming delivery, paired with a minimalist musical backdrop, draws listeners into a story of loss, love and self-discovery. From the mundane to the profound, Skinner captures the essence of human experience with bare honesty and endearing intimacy, evoking both laughter and tears - quite literally in the case of its biggest hit, 'Dry Your Eyes'. With its focus on the minutiae of life and the importance of connection, A Grand Don't Come for Free remains a timeless and compelling album that is worth revisiting often and now is offered on a new reissued for 2024.

Move To The Groove (7:21)
Review: Plastik People boss Mark Cotterell keeps up the good form he sowed in 2022 with his first EP of 2023. It comes on Rhythm Vibe and features two more of his well-designed and well-swung garage-house groovers. 'Take You For A Ride' has choppy drums and hits with fresh piano stabs and soulful vocals and 'Move To The Groove' then gets a little deeper but with similar ingredients. A Ross Couch mix takes it into more airy and floaty territory while Mike Millrain's mix of 'Take You For A Ride' brings the 90s vibes.

Review: The Full Circle label is building up a fine head of steam early on and this third EP is a throwback garage classic. It's a re-release of a cult gem from Danny J Lewis with the steamy vocals of Danielle Gaga. 'Spend the Night' has it all - the hooky and soulful vocal, the dry percussive drums, the infectious swing and the lush chords. As well as the H-Man dub, there are other versions including one from tech house tian Archie Hamilton, a super smooth VIP dub and a Disco Edit that layers in some cosmic arps and leaves the great original vocal intact.

Next Millennium (2000 Tribute mix) (4:22)
Review: Reissue of in demand classic.Dubtraxx was new on the scene back in 2019 when they dropped this EP which has since become something of a mini-classic. It came on their own label Rhythm N Vibe and now this is seriously heavyweight gear gets reissued. 'Soundbwoy Request' is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. 'Towards '99' is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous A-side. The "2000 Tribute Mix" of 'Next Millenium' meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you'd expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

Review: Following previous drops from Lukey, Enzo Leep and dot13, Into The Wizard's Sleeve welcomes David G Tronic and Reboot for a taut trip through high-end electro for all razor-sharp selectors. 'Leave Your Body' is a bouncy affair with an ear-snagging snatch of toasting certain to get the floor loosened up good and proper. 'Loose' meanwhile is anything but, revolving round a punchy beatdown and choice vocoder licks. Review: DJ Crisps is starting to make some handy garage moves after a couple of various artists' appearances and a fine EP on Time Is Now Germany in July. Now they link up with Oldboy who appeared on Burnski's other label Vivid back in 2022. As you should expect these are four hardcore and rudely garage cuts with plenty of swagger, naughty samples and bass-face potential. 'On My Way' is the standout with its shuffling one-two drum punch, distant police sirens and warped basslines underneath a timeless and irresistible female vocal full of soul. A summer scorcher for sure alongside three more very useful weapons.

Review: Long time underground UK stalwart Zed Bias dropped this - one of his many seminal cuts - back in 1999. Now, the dark garage classic 'Neighbourhood' gets reissued alongside some remixes. In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

Check One (Pavilion mix)
Energy Rush
Review: The trip makes no bones about this new EP on Tessellate. It's called UK Business and that's what it is all about. 'Big Buzz' kicks off with some brilliantly dry garage grooves and old school piano stabs while 'Who Got The Funk?' taps into a deeper, darker sound more akin to US garage with plenty of trippy synth details. 'Check One' (Pavilion mix) is a vital UKG cut with all the signifiers - revered stabs, are whistles and more. Last of all comes 'Energy Rush' which is a naughty one to get the gun fingers at the ready. To sum up, super good tools with plenty of character.

Review: Zed Bias's superb recent single with Shumba Youth is a modern fusion of dancehall and ragga that is perfect for loud deployment on top sound systems. Here though it comes in four different versions, all of which tap into different aspects of the UK hardcore continuum. The 4x4 Garage mix is just that and perfect for grotty warehouses, the 4x4 VIP Refix has a more prominent baseline feel and the Jeftuz UKG remix is a broken beat killer with wub-wub goodness. Last of all is the restless and kinetic 2-step mix to close out a high grade 12".

Review: First released way back in 1994 on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label, Dionne Warren's Brian Hall-produced deep house gem 'Feel Da Rain' gets a new lease of life thanks to Windsor, Ontario imprint Collective Rhythm Network (CRN). While the original 12" also featured rubs from Alton Miller and Stacey Pullen, it's D'Pac Patel's dub . a warm, rolling, US garage influenced deep house workout rich in tactile organ stabs, superb grooves and short samples of Warren's vocals - that has become the most sought-after version. On this 12", we get Patel's full-length dub (it was edited down on the original 12") and a previously unreleased 'Rhodes Dub' that adds extra electric piano action for added warmth and flavour.

The reissue comes on Digital Tape Recordings and sounds as good as ever, especially given the current revival of original garage. Reminiscent of their iconic 24hr Experience and GOD releases, it opens with the gritty and low slung sounds of '1 2 Luv', features the more thumping 'Sampler', diva vocal cries of 'Groovement' and stripped back version 'Dubment'.

Those skills are two fold - he famous fomented this own style of garage with quick beats and cut up vocals used like an extra instrument in the mix. But he is also a badass DJ who can slam through house and garage with high energy and plenty of charger. As such, he is rightly celebrated here with an overdue entry into Defected's long running House Masters series. Review: The Time Is Now label single-handed ushered in a new era of garage if you ask us. That was a few years ago but the label continues to lead from the fort here with a new EP from Samurai Breaks & Napes who make their label debut in explosive fashion. They are skilled studio talents who are nudging at the boundaries of the current UK bass sound and here they hybridise bassline, jungle and garage. You won't easily be able to fit these into one stylistic box but they will do damage on the floor, from the ghetto restlessness of the opener to the manic melodies of 'Correct Technique' and onto the turbocharged 'FrogMob'. Opener 'Reverse' taps into a US garage vibe - dusty low slung drums with a four to the floor pattern, plenty of swing and a well treated vocals all finished off with a melodic bassline. 'Loose Ends' is raw warehouse music with irresistible bounce and then the soulful vocal smoothness of 'Gonna Make You' might just steal the show at the end. Timeless tackle.

For its 15th release, the tech and minimal focussed label welcomes Robin Graham who opens up with the lively and colourful synths of bustling groover 'Check Me Out'. 'Spark Plug' is more business-like - the dry drums and hits overlaid with retro chord stabs that amp up the crowd and 'For You' then gets loose and funky with some twisted and sugar synths over garage-flecked beats and 'What's That' (Refix) offers a jumbled percussive sound full of dynamism.

The Chunky EP
The Chunky EP (limited heavyweight vinyl double 12")

Experiment 727
Review: The Mancunian tones of Swamp81's resident MC Chunky are well known to those who tune in to the label's Rinse FM show on a regular basis. However, this debut EP, forwent any kind of vocal showcase for the kind of hefty, refined fusion of garage and techno we've come to expect from Loefah's empire. Arriving as a 12" doublepack featuring four tracks, The Chunky EP shows Chunky to have the production chops to match his skills on the microphone, showcasing a wide range of influences channeled through a uniquely dark mood; "Decca" is a straight up piece of rolling deep house with a shadowy basement vibe, while "Experiment 727? recalls the syncopated techno of Bambounou or Boddika's leaden beats, while on the second 12?, "Thang" is a masterclass in stripped back garage mechanics, and "Rugged" provides a lo-fi beat that ploughs the darkest recesses of instrumental grime for inspiration.

Last Forever
Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

Room On Top (7:23)
Fares Please (6:13)
All Change (6:57)
Hold Tight (7:22)
Review: Back in the late 90s, first time tech house was still booming, and Nathan Coles and Terry Francis were right at the heart father sound's best material. Some of it came as The Delinquents, who now get proper and worthy reissue treatment thanks to the always vital Mint Condition label. Their Room on Top EP from 1998 showcased the best of their sound - there's the dark and driving "Room On Top", then the more tripped put and late night "Fares Please". "All Change" gets back to bouncing, punchy drum led business and "Hold Tight" offers a perfectly gooey and woozy downtempo track to get things started or end them in stylish fashion.

Perception - "Oh Yes" (D Jason remix) (6:38)
Review: The Practical Rhythm crew are back with a third vital new release here. It's another trip back to the old school days of 90s garage but with a sufficiently stylish modern update. Sky Joose & DJ Perception are two of the scene's finest players and both come through here with a new single each. Sky Joose's 'Skin Teeth' is a dry, stripped back and minimal cut with darkened bass that becomes even more naughty with the Interplanetary Criminal SPZL remix. Perception then brings some light to the EP with his 'Oh Yes', a soulful cut with a magic lead and loose, tumbling drums. DJ Jason then flips it with some smeared, reversed bass and skeletal perc.

Review: Time Is Now is one of the most prolific, but also on point labels out there right now. Dealing in bumping nu-garage sounds, they have a wealth of talent other roster - as well las cheeky white label off shoot for the more playful slammers they put out - and now welcome rising UKG act Y U QT for a fine collection of dance floor heaters. 'Be Real' is a breathless groove with noodling keys and retro stabs, 'Keep On Lovin' Me' is a real banger with great height and drop in the kicks and face melting bass. For darker, more late night and menacing vibes check the thrilling 'Hardly Keep It Inside.' Tip!

Myumax (6:43)
Review: IRIS are also known as IRIS Soundsystem, made up of Eric H and DJ Joseph. They recorded a clutch of tunes back in 2000 and 2001 which capture the magic of the UK garage sound in a raw and ruff form, and now they've been unearthed and pressed up by the good folk at Bubblin Fresh. 'One Eye' is a skippy 2-stepper with a nu jazz undercurrent (just check that bassline), while 'Beabay' takes a more melancholic trip through minor Rhodes chords and minimal beats. 'Shastic' has a little more fun with the bass, getting properly wobbly underneath more of those atmospheric keys, and 'Myumax' locks into a spooky little shuffler which fans of El-B should absolutely take note of.

De Nata (4:40)
Review: Burnski's Instinct label serves up some fresh platters from a new name, Papa Nugs. These are of course naughty as you like garage tinged late night gems for cosy dance floors. Opener 'Gemini' is a high speed affair with exotic strings and neck-snapping hits. 'Kilo of Filo' is a super heavy wobbler with a fat as fuck bottom end oscillation. 'De Nata' closes out on more super crisp breakbeats that recall the genres hey day when artists like Ali B were knocking out killer mixes for Fabric. All killer no filler, as ever with this label.
