A Strange Celestial Road: My Time In The Sun Ra Arkestra by Ahmed Abdullah
Cat: 971863 Rel: 05 Oct 23

A thrilling account of life with Sun Ra's Arkestra and New York's avant-garde jazz scenes of the 1970s-90s.
Notes: A thrilling account of life with Sun Ra's Arkestra and New York's avant-garde jazz scenes of the 1970s-90s. In this memoir, Harlem-born trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah recounts decades of national and international touring with the Sun Ra Arkestra and charts the rise of the New York loft jazz scene, offering a fascinating portrait of advanced music in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan from the 1970s through the 1990s, including thrilling stories about the politically important Bed-Stuy venue The East and the author's tutelage under composer and long-time Archie Shepp collaborator Cal Massey. Along the way, Abdullah covers his spiritual development as a Buddhist, battles with addiction, tribulations as a father, lessons from Sun Ra and working life as an educator and cab driver. Trumpeter and educator Ahmed Abdullah was born in Harlem in 1947. An important figure in the New York loft jazz movement, in 1972 he formed a group called Abdullah, two years before joining the Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom he played for more than 20 years. He is a founding member of the bands Melodic Art-Tet, The Group and NAM, and of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. Abdullah is the music director at Sistas' Place in Brooklyn, and teaches music at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan and an elementary school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

Big Bad & Heavy
Big Bad & Heavy (hardback book)
Cat: 663235 Rel: 26 Sep 17

Hardback book featuring the story of jungle DJ Jumpin Jack Frost
Notes: Big, Bad & Heavy is the story of legendary jungle DJ Jumpin Jack Frost; a man who lived his life at the break-neck speed of the music he played.

Raised on the tough south London streets of Brixton, Nigel Thompson was saved from a life of crime and punishment, by music. A pirate DJ on Passion FM, when acid house broke down virtually every cultural boundary in the UK, Frost was right there at the forefront of the British rave revolution. Then, when hardcore splintered into jungle in the early nineties, Frost became one of the figureheads of this uniquely British phenomenon; releasing many of the tunes that defined this scene, on his and fellow DJ Bryan Gee's hugely influential record label V.

V would go on to break artists such as the Mercury-Prize winning Roni Size, a success story that saw Frost travelling the planet on his quest to take jungle global. A life of sex, drugs and drum and bass followed as Frost became established as one of the hardest working DJs on the circuit.

But no matter how hard he tried to evade the criminal lifestyle that had taken many of his friends down, prison, guns and violence were never far away. And when his drug use started to spiral out of control, Frost faced a battle that threatened to take everything he had.

Featuring contributions from Goldie, Roni Size, Congo Natty, Bryan Gee, Jazzie B, DJ Ron, Tipper Irie and many more, Big, Bad & Heavy is the compelling story of one man's bruising journey through the deepest, and darkest, jungle of all...

Circles: The Strange Story Of The Fleur De Lys
Notes: As part of their successful 'Rare Mod' series, Acid Jazz have once again turned their hand to book publishing with 'Circles: The Strange Story Of The Fleur De Lys', Britain's Forgotten Soul Band. Following on from the number one bestselling biography of the Small Faces by Paolo Hewitt, this time, as a companion to the forthcoming Fleur De Lys EP 'The Two Sides of The Fleur de Lys' the label shines a light on one of the legendary and perhaps most unsung mod bands of the 1960s. The book charts the Southampton group's journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first British band signed to Atlantic Records. Hits with Sharon Tandy as well as their astronomic version of The Who's 'Circles' and their own psyche masterpiece 'Mud In Your Eye' (both of which sell for well over £600) have earned The Fleur de Lys their rightful place in the mod pantheon. Authors Paul Anderson and Damian Jones have interviewed every surviving member and tell a fascinating story of sublime talent, missed chances and mismanaged business opportunities. Names like Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Aretha Franklin and The Who weave in and out of the story and the result is a must for 60s fans, soulboy and mods as well as anyone with an interest in youth culture.

Electronic Resistance, By Nigel Ayers (limited hand-numbered 160p hardcover book + print)
Cat: 872342 Rel: 28 Apr 22

Hardcover book
Notes: Since the late 1970s, Nigel Ayers (b. 1957, UK) has cut a bracing, subversive path through the contemporary underground, bridging DIY industrial enthusiasms with multimedia experimentation to form a singular body of work. Co-founder of the groups The Pump and Nocturnal Emissions (along with brother Daniel Ayers and then-partner Caroline Kaye), Ayers has been a contributor to and proponent of industrial music's high-water marks, his Sterile Records imprint disseminating not only NE sides but also defining work from Lustmord, SPK, Maurizio Bianchi, and others between 1979 and 1986. In 1987, Ayers inaugurated the Earthly Delights label with the now-canonical Caroline K recording Now Wait For Last Year, and the imprint has since served as Ayers's primary outlet for releasing new work, whether as Magnetizdat, Spanner Thru Ma Beatbox, or Nocturnal Emissions, a going concern to this day. Published, designed, and produced by Ross Waitman and Amaya Productions in collaboration with the artist, ELECTRONIC RESISTANCE compiles mail-art, collages, assemblages, flyers, slides, video stills, ephemera, record and tape covers to present an arresting cross-section of the genre-sundering art Nigel Ayers created between 1980 and 1992. It features an introductory reflection from Ayers, as well as an essay entitled "Bleeding Images: Antipsychiatry, Death, and Mind Control" by art historian and critic Nicholas Ballet (Universite Paris-1 Pantheon-Sorbonne), contextualizing Ayers's work and extensive career

Entry Points Resonating Punk Performance & Art
Notes: During the late 1960s and early 1970s, as members of the performance art group EXIT, Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher turned to creating outside of the gallery system and artistic conventions. Taking inspiration from eastern philosophy, particularly Buddhism and Taoism, they searched for ways to push beyond the boundaries of Western art practices and rationalities. This resonates with Redza Piyadasa and Suleiman Esa's 1974 manifesto and exhibition Towards a Mystical Reality, which likewise sought to find a way out of the limitations of modernist art practices and rationalities. Entry Points takes up Piyadasa's statement that art does not exist in time but only has entry points. What entry points might we find in the resonances between different attempts to utilize conceptual and performative gestures as a way to escape from the constraints one is faced with, aesthetically and politically?

Contains an essay by Stevphen Shukaitis, a dialogue between Shukaitis and Penny Rimbaud, and a recording of an improvised performance by Dharma and Awk Wah, "There is no authority but yourself... and there is no self", responding to footage of the Stop the City Protests.
52pp risograph printed artist book with CD. Edition of 200.

Bios: Stevphen Shukaitis is a cultural theorist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Essex. Penny Rimbaud, is a writer, poet, philosopher, painter, musician and activist. He was a member of the performance art groups EXIT co-founded the seminal anarchist punk band Crass. Dharma was the guitarist of The Observatory for the first 7 albums. In 2013, he released his solo debut, Intergranular Space.Awk Wah is the solo project of Shark Fung, a prolific Mandopop songwriter in his youth who later spent time playing drums in band like Engineered Beautiful Blood, Amino Acid Orchestra and I\D.

Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes To A Tribe Called Quest (by Hanif Abdurraqib)
Cat: 722513 Rel: 05 Mar 19

216 page paperback book
Notes: The first chronicle of A Tribe Called Quest - the visionary, award-winning group whose jazz-infused records and socially conscious lyrics revolutionized rap in the early 1990s.

Hanif Abdurraqib is a visiting writer in the MFA program at Butler University, an acclaimed poet, and cultural critic whose work has appeared in the New York Times, MTV News, Vulture, and other outlets. A nominee for the Pushcart Prize, he is the author of the highly praised poetry collection The Crown Ain't Worth Much and the essay collection They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us.

How does one pay homage to A Tribe Called Quest? The seminal rap group brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces such as The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Seventeen years after their last album, they resurrected themselves with an intense, socially conscious record, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which arrived when fans needed it most, in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib digs into the group's history and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself. The result is as ambitious and genre-bending as the rap group itself.

Abdurraqib traces the Tribe's creative career, from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Their work is placed in the context of the broader rap landscape of the 1990s, one upended by sampling laws that forced a reinvention in production methods, the East Coast - West Coast rivalry that threatened to destroy the genre, and some record labels' shift from focusing on groups to individual MCs. Throughout the narrative Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact. Whether he's remembering The Source magazine cover announcing the Tribe's 1998 breakup or writing personal letters to the group after bandmate Phife Dawg's death, Abdurraqib seeks the deeper truths of A Tribe Called Quest; truths that - like the low end, the bass - are not simply heard in the head, but felt in the chest.

Jackson C Frank: The Clear Hard Light Of Genius
Cat: 554319 Rel: 05 Nov 14

250 page paperback book detailing the life of musician Jackson C. Frank
Notes: The story of Jackson C. Frank is tragic. The victim of a school fire in his youth, struggling with homelessness and mental illness throughout his life, half-blinded in old age before his death in 1999, Frank met continuous obstacles. And yet he enjoyed a shining moment with the release of Jackson C. Frank on Columbia Records in 1965. The album would go on to be seen as one of the greatest folk albums of the decade - maybe of all time - and its opening track "Blues Run the Game" has become a standard covered by hundreds.

Jim Abbott's book is the result of years of research piecing together evidence, relations and apocryphal stories from Frank's life. It is also part memoir, as Abbott cared for Frank through the final decade of his life. Their friendship was fraught with difficulties, which Abbott portrays with the honesty of a journalist. In doing so, he draws a portrait of a uniquely gifted songwriter, blessed with talent and besotted by demons. At 250 pages, Abbott's memoir shows a flawed and caring individual whose struggle was best depicted in his songs.

Following the release of Jackson C. Frank: The Clear, Hard Light of Genius, Ba Da Bing will release three volumes of Jackson C. Frank: The Complete Recordings in early 2015, compiling work from throughout his life, including unreleased material.

Join The Future: Bleep Techno & The Birth Of British Bass Music (by Matt Anniss)
Cat: 750622 Rel: 27 Nov 19

The history of 'bleep & bass' - 324-page paperback book by Matt Anniss
Notes: The previously untold story of British dance music's first sub-bass revolution, tracing the origins, development, impact and influence of bleep techno, and the subsequent musical styles it inspired, on UK club culture.

Since the dawn of the 1990s, British dance music has been in thrall to the seductive power of weighty sub-bass. It is a key ingredient in a string of British-pioneered genres, including hardcore, jungle, drum & bass, dubstep, UK garage and grime.

In the Join The Future book, dance music journalist Matt Anniss (Resident Advisor, DJ Magazine, Red Bull Music Academy) traces the roots, origins, development and legacy of the sound that started it all: the first distinctively British form of electronic dance music, bleep techno.

A mixture of social, cultural, musical and oral history, Join The Future reveals the untold stories of bleep's Yorkshire pioneers and those that came in their wake, moving from electro all-dayers and dub soundsystem clashes of the mid-1980s to the birth of hardcore and jungle in London and the South East.

Along the way, you'll find first-hand accounts of key clubs and raves, biographies of forgotten and overlooked production pioneers, stories of bleep outposts in Canada and the United States, and the inside story of the early years of one of electronic music's most iconic labels, Warp Records.

Based on five years of research and hundreds of hours of new interviews, the book is a radical alternative history of the rise of British dance music during the late 80s and early 90s.

About the author:

Matt Anniss is a journalist and author specializing in electronic music, DJing and club culture. He began his career on internet magazines in the late 1990s before joining the staff of IDJ Magazine as Music Editor in 2000, later becoming Editor. Since leaving the magazine in 2008 he's become a regular contributor to Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy Daily and DJ Magazine, specializing in historical aspects of dance music culture.

As an author, Matt Anniss has written over 50 non-fiction books for children and young adults, including a number of "how-to" books on DJing, podcasting and music production. In 2017 he co-authored The Vinyl Owners Manual (with Patrick Fuller) for iconic British brand Haynes Publishing, which became one of the brand's best-selling titles of 2018. He is an obsessive record collector and mix maker. He lives in Bristol, England.

People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm (by Shawn Taylor)
Notes: One of the finest hip-hop albums ever made, A Tribe Called Quest's debut record (featuring stone-cold classics like "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum") took the idea of the boasting hip-hop male and turned it on its head. For many listeners, when this non-traditional, surprisingly feminine album was released, it was like hearing an entirely new form of music.

In this book, Shawn Taylor explores the creation of the album as well as the impact it had on him at the time - a 17-year-old high-school geek who was equally into hip-hop, punk, new wave, skateboarding, and Dungeons & Dragons: all of a sudden, with this one album, the world made more sense. He has spent many years investigating this album, from the packaging to the song placement to each and every sample - Shawn Taylor knows this record like he knows his tattoos, and he's finally been able to write a fascinating and highly entertaining book about it.

This 320-page A4 book also covers other zines that Karren produced in Manchester and Leeds between 1984 and 1994, capturing an era where DIY was de rigueur and indie actually meant something.

You'll be able to read original interviews with the following bands (in chronological order).

Eyeless In Gaza • The Membranes • The Stone Roses • The Inca Babies • Tools You Can Trust • The Bodines • Inspiral Carpets • The Pastels • The Janitors • Happy Mondays • King of the Slums • The Dust Devils • The Shamen • Cud • Sonic Youth • Dinosaur Jr • The Pixies • Throwing Muses • The Sundays • Thrilled Skinny • Rapeman • UT • Dog Faced Hermans • Edsel Auctioneer • Mudhoney • AC Temple • fIREHOSE • Band of Susans • Henry Rollins • Live Skull • Kilgore Trout • The Sun and The Moon • The Breeders • Happy Flowers • Silverfish • The Keatons • The Stretchheads • Pregnant Neck • Mayomberos Alive • Fluff • Archbishop Kebab • Nirvana • Pale Saints • Mercury Rev • The Heart Throbs • Babes in Toyland • American Music Club • Hole • Pavement • My Bloody Valentine • Shudder To Think • The Wedding Present • Leatherface • Nation of Ulysses • Tsunami • Poster Children • Sugar • Moonshake • Hood • Polvo

Notes: We can be the new wind: The interaction of punk, hardcore punk, power pop and neo-garage with alternative rock in the 1980's.

The hardcore punk scene had two major crossovers, one with heavy metal and one with pop influenced independent rock. A significant number of early hardcore punk bands incorporated more melodic, challenging and experimental elements in their music while retaining their punk backbone and by doing so, they went on to create something new.

Alex's first book, 'Crossover' focused on the the metal hardcore crosover, this massive new book focuses on the crossover of Punk, Hardcore Punk, Garage Revival and Power Pop with the Alternative Rock scene and reports on many of the main bands in the genre.

With more than 160 bands interviewed and even more reviewed, the result is a total of more than 1000 essential 'pop-punk' bands covered in this book. 826 pages packed with information, photos and gig flyers from all your favourite bands, and all wrapped up in original cover art by Brian Walsby - this is an essential, if not comprehensive guide, to 80's alt-rock.

Wildstyle: The Sampler
Cat: 281653 Rel: 25 Sep 07

Photography book of behind the scenes photos and commentary from the classic hip-hop film "Wild Style", with commentary from Lee Quinones, Busy Bee, Lady Pink, Fab 5 Freddy and others (212 pages, colour, hardback)
Notes: Like a child who has been through high-school, four years of college and about three years in the work force. That's how long it's been since seminal Hip-Hop film, Wild Style, first hit the film market. 25 years to be exact. To commemorate this glorious quarter of a century, Charlie Ahearn, the film's director, gives us a big photography book of behind the scenes photos, artwork and commentary from the young New York City pariahs who were the originators of this pivotal movement. Wild Style The Sampler (Powerhouse) is a swell, fresh memento. The book does not merely regurgitate pictures from scenes from in the movie. No, the book features photos from the shooting of the film but that have been not widely published. It also includes commentary from the film's main anchors like Lee Quinones, Busy Bee, Lady Pink, Fab 5 Freddy, and others, as they look back on the great era of pioneering Hip-Hop. The book also sashays photos of folks relatively unknown then but who are now either either really famous or literally immortal icons. There's a picture from the set of Blondie's Rapture of Jean-Michel Basquiat chilling in the background as well as a random polaroid of a girl named Angie B who would later would become neo-soul chanteuse Angie Stone. To put it plainly, floss with this book. Many serious Hip-Hop heads know Wild Style the movie, frontwards to backwards, in and out, but few of them have seen photos of Lee and Lady Pink on location at the amphitheater before shooting, original hand drawn storyboards, or write-ups about the whole Wild Style experience from Sacha Jenkins and others. This photo book makes Wild Style a whole new movie. Add the current pictures of Busy Bee rocking the crowd older, wiser, and with a hair full of dreads and Wild Style The Sampler is a bona fide collector's item. Charlie Ahearn shows us how a little subculture that started in The Bronx is now the reason why cats are rhyming in Japanese and Swahili. On behalf of Hip-Hop's eclectic offspring, Happy 25th birthday Wild Style!
