Review: The second album from questionably spelt Canadian five-piece Alvvays doesn't see them straying too far from their comfort zone, but only because they don't particularly need to. Stylistically, the band are good at what they do, snugly nestled in the ethereal pop sound we've come to recognise from groups such as Best Coast, Beach House and Camera Obscura. Clocking in at just over half an hour long, the follow-up to 2014's self-titled debut is kept short and sweet, providing a lean and sentimental album full of jangling guitars, satisfying chord progressions and relatable emotional intelligence that will continue to please current fans, and more than likely enamour a swathe of new ones.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface mark on the record, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

Adia Victoria makes a thoroughly welcome return with her third album, A Southern Gothic. From her unmistakable vocal twang to the scratchy tone of her guitar and the bottleneck lurches behind her, she embodies the south of the USA with undeniable flair. Doubling down on that idea for her third record, she conjures up another stellar run of blues with acerbic wit and confessional intimacy woven together in potent fashion. Featuring the likes of Kyahona and Margo Price on 'You Was Born To Die' and Stone Jack Jones on 'My Oh My', this might just be her best album yet.

Review: Australian folk-indie-pop set Angus & Julia Stone, appropriately led by brother and sister Angus and Julia Stone, have been making waves Down Under for almost 20 years now. One listen to their output is enough to convince you they're a cut well above the rest, and the panel charged with deciding on the ARIA Awards obviously agree. They've now won lots, and received nominations for countless more.
Life Is Strange certainly reflects their oeuvre quite accurately. Somewhere between contemporary country, blissful indie and romantic, soft and sweet artsy indie, the project itself also reflects their forward-thinking attitude, with this one of a growing number of video game scores that are actually albums in themselves, rather than the kind of straight up soundtracks we're mostly used to.

Review: The blissful, heart wrenching, emotionally captivating Sufjan Stevens teams up with one of California's finest lo-fi indie artists, and a chap who has warmed up for him on a number of occasions; Angelo De Augustine. No doubt you can already picture in the mind's ear what this collaboration will sound like, and you'd be right. But it's far more difficult to figure out where they're coming from with this release.

Allow us to divulge, then. Beginner's Mind is a record at once inspired by some excellent movies, and then also some not-so-excellent ones. Each track on here owes something to the world's foremost visual culture (sorry, gamers), from 'Reach Out' referencing Wings of Desire to 'Lady Macbeth in Chains' nodding to All About Eve. In every case the link is nuanced, rather than direct, but this is only testament to the staggering songwriting at play.

Review: There's no rock frontman quite like Greg Dulli, and even in middle age his melancholy and morally ambiguous loverman persona appears to be maturing like the proverbial fine wine. Moreover, the blend of soulful heart-on-sleeve balldeering and gritty rock-outs finds new vistas and moments of intensity on 'In Spades' - lurking somewhere between the testosterone bluster of Springsteen and the slinky grooves of Motown, yet with the addition of noisy electronic grooves, as on the opener 'Birdland,' only bolstering their arsenal. It's a treat to have this louche rogue back.

Review: The Afghan Wings serve up their ninth album here and it is one that finds them in top form throughout. The sounds here are brilliantly thrilling and high octane across a first record in five years. 26 years after this group formed they still find new heights and fresh sounds as they reference greats like Warren Zevon, Prince, and Zeppelin while also adding their own love of soul and R&B. Frontman Greg Dulli is in typical swaggering and dynamic form on the mic as he leads this one from the front.

Review: It may be open to debate how ironic that title is - the New Zealand-born singer-songwriter Harding insists that it's not. But the fact that this record isn't overburdened by elated atmospherics takes nothing away from a quietly powerful, reflective and charismatic piece of work. PJ Harvey comparisons (particularly in relation to 'White Chalk') are bound to present themselves, especially with longtime Peej collaborator John Parish on board, but 'Party' is a dark gem with a lustre all its own. not to mention brio, humour and subtlety to spare.

Review: A Certain Ratio's core trio of drummer Donald Johnson, bassist/vocalist Jez Kerr, and multi-instrumentalist Martin Moscrop make ACR Loco a perfectly fluid and funk album. In fact, on this, their first album in more than ten years, the Manchester post-punk outfit are as funky as they have ever been. Their tried and tested sound gets nicely updated with modern beat driven sounds and plenty of redefines to today's political strife in the lyrics. There are plenty of smooth and cool synth led grooves like 'Get A Grip' and messages of unity on 'Family' that we can all relate to.

Review: Sometimes bands just drip good vibes. Take Los Angeles' Allah-Las for example. We challenge anyone to find a groovier troupe, these guys boasting more infectious qualities than many viruses we know of. This, their self-referential latest album is like the culmination of all that has come before, not so much changing tact from the shimmering, delightfully loose and jangly strain of indie rock we have come to know them for but rather presenting the most finely tuned and honed interpretation of that sound to date. There are tones of Grateful Dead and Love peppered throughout this collection, which comes with moments such as the hands-held-aloft, sermon-like "Holding Pattern", the intensity of "Houston", and the journeyman instrumentation of Portuguese language country rocker "Prazer Em Te Conhecer". The result is something you're not going to forget in a hurry, as trippy and floaty as it is funky and dirty.

Review: Appearing as both a standard edition and purple-coloured 'Nightmare Edition' - going for a trademark 'corona effect' with variant artwork - Alt-J here present their most emotionally harrowing and difficult album yet, dealing directly with a series of traumatic experiences experienced by the band's members both in childhood and over the course of the recent pandemic. Hooting, flatuing and honking comes the lead single 'U&ME', in which Joe Newman sings of personal oppression and stress - "pressing down on my face" - to the tune of woodblocks, metal pangs and strong bass licks. Watch out for this Blood Records exclusive edition.

Review: The Alarm lead singer and songwriter Mike Peters set up The Twenty First Century Recording Company in Prestatyn, North Wales in 1994 as a way of allowing his band to express themeless freely away from the conventional restrains of other labels. It remains the band's primary home and is where they land now with a remarkable 20th album. It comes after a time of illness and more than 40 years of writing big and anthemic rock tunes but still finds him serving up more of the same with plenty of epic riffs and singalong choruses. Get ready to be punching the air non-stop with this one.

Review: The ever prolific Alexis Georgopoulos makes a welcome return to Mexican Summer with his Arp hat on, continuing the ZEBRA trilogy he started with the album of the same name in 2018. You might well associate his work with more pastoral, Fourth World-indebted styles, but on this second chapter of a considered narrative, he switches stance for a vivid, 80s strain of synth-pop electronica. It's a sound which speaks to the most visionary pop pioneers of the era - Vince Clarke springs to mind - but of course Georgopoulos has the benefit of modern methods to make those intricate, interwoven synth patterns even more vivid and dazzling. It's like the best 80s synth record you never heard.

Review: It's safe to say that Aqualung's eponymous debut album was very much a product of its time. A period when alt-leaning rock-y balladry packed with a forlorn, almost melancholic atmosphere and off-key melodies had taken over the mainstream in a fevered clamour to resurrect an indie scene that had been running out of ideas since the waves of Britpop began to recede.

None of which is a criticism, but rather a prelude to hearing this spectacular record again, at which point you're likely to be transported back to watching the VW Beetle ad that used the track 'Strange and Beautiful', and the first season of Skins (which featured 'Good Times Gonna Come'). Stadium sized quiet bleeding romance, heartbreak, and an introverted attitude, it's no wonder this record catapulted Matthew Nicholas Hales - as the artist was born - into the upper echelons of producers, songwriters and collaborators (the list of who he's worked with is, to put it mildly, impressive).

Review: A Place To Bury Strangers arrive at their sixth album in the form of their career. The songwriting is strong and brave, the rebooted line-up featuring vocalist and guitarist Oliver Ackermann plus drummer and vocalist Sandra Fedowitz and bassist John Fedowitz really works across the 13 tracks, which were all recorded in seclusion. But these are tunes to be heard in the midst of a writhing, sweaty crowd with its swirling guitars and rampant rhythms. In finding new ground and exploiting it other full, A Place To Bury Strangers have reached new heights here.

Review: Owen Ashworth is Advance Base and his 2015 album Nephew In The Wild gets a reissue here. It was his second of what has now been six albums since he left his Casiotone for the Painfully Alone bedroom pop project and it pairs gentle indie songwriting with melancholic themes and a lo-fi production style. His often simple arrangements pair a heartfelt melody and gauzy guitar line with minimal drums as he shares the joys of married life and parenthood and the folly of youthful recklessness.

Part of Sony's latest reissues motive for weirdo champer pop songstress Fiona Apple, When The Pawn... is said to have broken the record for longest-ever album title, a record we're sure has been broken more recently by a much more obscure netizen we're not particularly fain to track down. Review: Given Tornado Wallace's impeccable Balearic credentials, you'd expect his new A.S.O project - a collaboration with Berlin-based singer-songwriter Alisia Seror O'Neill AKA Alias Error - to tend towards the dreamy, immersive and emotive. It does, of course, with the pair conjuring gorgeous slabs of downtempo leftfield pop variously influenced by the layered textures of shoegaze, the wide-eyed bliss of 80s dream pop (Seror O'Neill's vocal delivery is at times reminiscent of Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser), the blazed Bristol beats of Massive Attack, the flat-on-your-back day-break headiness of ambient, the hard-to-pigeonhole brilliance of the Duratti Column and the late-night-on-AM-radio atmosphere of Kelley Polar and Morgan Geist's similarly inspired Ai Suisse project.

Review: Is it really 10 years since Alt-J burst into the open with the barnstorming success of their debut album An Awesome Wave? The band set out their stall as something a little different from the get-go, but the vital essence of the band is in their ability to bridge the gap between widely appealing indie songwriting hooks and unusual touches which make everything sound new, even a decade later. It's fair to say they inspired a fair few artists in their wake, especially with the likes of 'Something Good', but none of these imitators match up to the sheer inventiveness spilling out of this incredible debut album. In the wake of their latest album The Dream, it's a treat to be able to go back to the beginning of their remarkable journey.

The Drugs Don't Work (5:37)
Review: It's been three whole years since we last encountered a new album from the man like Richard Ashcroft. The guy who once told us how the drugs no longer worked, only to then explain how lucky he was. In many ways, Acoustic Hymns Vol.1 is an extension of all that, a record that has come along at a time when he's clearly ready to reflect on the heady days of the Britpop and UK indie explosion detonated in the 1990s.

Whether you'd call this album a covers collection or original, new work is definitely down to opinion. Ashcroft has opted to turn his hand back to tracks released with his seminal band The Verve, and a few of his own solo bits, only reimagined and reappropriated. The latter word is the most accurate, though. Here genuinely new life is breathed back into the likes of 'Bittersweet Symphony', which, considering the scale of that particular hit, is no mean feat.

Review: Originally released in 1982, A Flock Of Seagulls' eponymous debut album heard them burst on to the new wave scene with advanced songwriting and catchy guitar laps and lyrics. With Phil Spector hailing the album as 'phenomenal', perhaps for somewhat conforming to his wally production technique, the band ended up being venerated near-timelessly for their quasi-electronic synth tunes like 'I Ran' (clock the use of early electronic drum pads in its breakdown). This is new wave at one its best pop-centric peaks.

The Car is epic on every level with its adventurously designed tunes, lots of grand orchestration and plenty of easy-to-enjoy and enigmatic songs of love but also doubt. The Sheffield outfit's seventh long player was written by frontman Turner at his home in LA and mixes indie and psychedelic rock, baroque, glam and orchestral rock with production largely taken care of by frequent collaborator James Ford. The title is a nod to the fact that there are many references to cars throughout the lyrics.

Review: Alvvays is one of the indie rock scene's most treasured acts and now they are back with a third album that will please fans old and new. There has been a five-year wait since the last LP but it was worth it as Blue Rev reasserts what made the band great while also bringing new sounds. This is the band's longest album to date and maybe their best with big riffs, driving drum rhythms and plenty of great lyric work. It will be supported by a big tour this fall so tune in and get to know.

Review: A lot can change in two years or so. Not least if 2021 saw you release one of the most celebrated records of the current decade, tackling the mental health crisis head on in the midst of a global pandemic. An album that despaired and threw its hands up, declaring that we, collectively, are not alright and something needs to change, all via staggeringly poetic prose, at times bordering on spoken word. Returning from that triumphant episode, Arlo Parks follows up with The Soft Machine, an LP that lands after most of the dust from that global emergency has settled, and she's relocated to sunny Los Angeles to live with partner and alternative rapper, Ashnikko. To say the result is something that sounds warmer, more appreciative of what you've got rather than focussed on what isn't would be an understatement, but the exquisite songwriting and willingness to speak honestly about major issues remains.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Albarn's latest offering to the musical gods comes in the form of a conceptual record that looks to prove, beyond doubt, that you really can paint pictures in the eyes of minds everywhere through sounds. In this case, it's the picturesque, poetically bleak volcanic landscapes of Iceland - where the former-Blur man now lives - which are vividly rendered through notes, chords, keys and lyrics.

If you've ever been to the island of fire and snow then alongside hot springs and remote cliffs you probably picked up on its sparseness. That's certainly a theme here, with beautiful instrumentation opting for an 'only what's needed' aesthetic, rather than 'more is more'. Opening on the meditative title number, as the journey unfolds we get strange lo-fi indietronic folk, cacophonous walls of shrill sounds, and mournful, ambient strings, all of which sound incredible.

Review: Fiona Apple's fourth studio album, originally released in 2012, features 'Werewolf,' 'Hot Knife,' and opening track 'Every Single Night'. Now reissued via Sony, we're reminded again of Apple's surrealist, melancholic fantasy; from the opening breakup single, which stops and starts with virtuosic restraint and metric indeterminacy; to 'Valentine', which continues Apple's preference for huge chords and piano-bound ballads, as she laments her inability to resist tarrying in youth; this is quite literally a run-on sentence in album form, with Apple compellingly putting across a restless persona, unable to settle into contentment.

It is a full throttle 13 track rock workout with dense and gauzy guitars layered up into impenetrable walls as the vocal wails fight your attention. It is a raw fusion of indie, grunge and shoegaze all the way from Santiago that will remind of classic bands from the late 90s.

Review: Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artists Allie X - real name Alexandra Ashley Hughes - is a great representative for the resurgent live electro-synth scene. Emerging from the Toronto indie circuit in the mid-2000s, it was a relocation to Los Angeles, a heartland for neon sounds, and early work with producers Circuit and Billboard that first saw an identity begin to form, which is as retro as it is futuristic, picking up scores of fans along the way, including Katie Perry no less. Girl With No Face is her latest long form, and sees the artist again stick her flag confidently in the ground. Tunes bounce, track, soar, step, pump and - at times - fall apart, emotionally speaking, with clear references to the likes of Ladyhawke, Madonna, Kraftwerk, Cocteau Twins and a-Ha, among others. Definitely one to watch, if you're not already.

Review: This sixth studio album by Arcade Fire is as anticipated as any in the seminal indie band's long career. It was produced by esteemed Radiohead associate Nigel Godrich in many different locations around the world from El Paso to New Orleans. The band say it was the longest they have ever spent writing together and is focused on the forces that threaten to pull the world apart and how we must resist. WE has a big narrative arc that makes for a real rollercoaster of seven tunes that go from light to dark and back and with plenty of joy expressed amongst the tensions.

This is just one of the albums of his that Mute and Young God Records are reissuing with Other People also set to drop soon. Carefully balancing between contemporary odysseys ("Jomsvikingarimur"), dense futuristic electronic weaves ("Last Remnants"), fuzzy 22nd century pop ("A Noise") sludgy cosmic funk ("Jasmine") and introspective soul ("Our Love Comes Back"), Olafur blows wave after woozy wave of soft sonic conjurations in a way that's broad, detailed and cleverly considered. Good night.

Review: The world has long needed more Fiona Apple. An artist with a relatively slim body of work - 'Fetch...' is only her fifth album since debuting in 1999 - nevertheless her impact on music has been significant, spending a quarter century within corridors of the industry itself. Moreover, she represents all that's right about the business' uncompromising eccentricities, although sadly this now serves to remind us of all that's been lost in the sanitised and corporatised 21st Century model. Few who remember her MTV Video Music awards acceptance speech, calling bullshit on an entire industry, will be surprised at this latest work, then. From erogenous piano numbers, to percussion played with the bones of a dog, it's hardly by-numbers, never safe, and always on her own terms. Employing background clatter, worksong rhythms and alternative acoustic rock, the finished article is well worth the wait.

Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. It comes with plenty of powerful drums and big-ass basslines as well as yelping vocals and fuzzy textures that take in a range of emotions and even bigger riffs. This issue features a special insert and comes across four sides of vinyl so it's nice and loud, just as intended.

Review: Fiona Apple's 2005 album, Extraordinary Machine, is a unique blend of alternative and pop sounds flaunted from the upbeat 'Not About Love' to the gentle 'Parting Gift'. Coming a whopping six years after her incendiary sophomore When The Pawn... album, the release was notably shafted for two years after its intended release in 2003, inciting some speculation around the album's - sigh - commercial appeal. The impetus to release the album was ultimately fan-led, and led to a full-blown re-record by Apple, not to mention an all-out frenzy on the P2P and Torrenting scene.

Review: Dan Auerbach is best known for his role in The Black Keys and you only need to give his 2009 solo album the quickest of spins to make the connection. But Keep It Hid is no straight clone of the 'Keys sound, as Auerbach leans in on a scratchy, scuzzy solo outlet for his songwriting. The title track is a sluggish end of the night bar prop, while 'Heartbroken, In Disrepair' doubles down on tripped-out tremolo for a more psychedelic affair than you might normally associate with Auerbach's better-known work. It's a knockout slice of dirty south blues rock given a shot of something spicy - and now it's being repressed as a limited orange and black vinyl with a bonus insert.

'The Stuff' sets out their stall on Zuma 85 in no uncertain terms, as their crunchy 70s guitar tone meets with a subtle electronic pulse and some wry vocoder touches. From their devout psych-rock roots, the band have evolved to take in kosmische, art rock and even a touch of prog in their quest for new strains of sonic enlightenment.

It's Rough Trade that have taken up Amyl and The Sniffers for their debut album recorded in Sheffield with Ross Orton towards the end of 2018. Six months on and the four piece are rattling the walls more than ever with a raucous ballyhoo of garage-punk that sees the band's ferocious Pouges-y mix of Irish drunkenness hit the wall with the Californian sounds of Pennywise and Australia's own Frenzal Rhomb. With thrashings of guitars, unique and raw Australianisms, and sweaty, smashing drums: Amyl and The Sniffers are popping off.

Tori Amos' debut album, which finally saw the light of day in 1992, reaching 14 in the UK long form charts at a time when competition in the Top anything was ridiculously fierce, the record stands up very well on its own, trapped in your own listening capsule. More so, it marked the arrival of a truly unique voice who would go on to inspire a bunch of alt-pop sirens.
Of course, the finished article garnered praise from across the critical board, proving that what label executives don't know is often what the rest of us do - originality has far more longevity than a guaranteed number one. Producing timeless singles like 'Silent All These Years', 'China', 'Winter', and, of course, 'Crucify', it's a joy to hear again.

Review: Fiona Apple's debut album, Tidal, was released in 1996 and has since gone down as one of the foremost examples of the experimental pop artist's style-unto-no-other. Bringing the likes of 'Shadowboxer', 'Sleep To Dream', and standout 'Criminal' to the forefront of the contemporary imagination, the album functioned personally as a proof of talent: in Apple's own words, she was "proving myself, telling people from my past something. And to also try to get friends for the future." If Apple's pre-emptive lonesomeness wasn't assuaged after this album's release, we'll eat our hats. Its ten tracks singles portray Apple's young-adult angst against a predominant trip-hop backstyle, flaunting her palmy and present vocal delivery in particular.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It was two in two for Alabama Shakes when they first unveiled this bonafide swamp rock masterpiece. Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.

It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

Review: The latest album from Alice In Chains, and the first to be released in five years (following up 2013's The Devil Put The Dinosaurs Here), Rainier Fog was released in 2018 and now already hears a full reissue via their label BMG. Nominally and in content, the album was inspired by the volcanic Mount Rainier, which overlooks Seattle and looms large like a geo-musical behemoth over the seattle Music scene, from which the band first emerged alongside the likes of Nirvana, Screaming Trees and Soundgarden. A paean to the band's hometown, Rainier Fog lands as a heady mixture of oral history, suspense, together with all the signature hallmarks of AIC's grunge-sludge. It now comes reissued in coloured vinyl 2xLP form.

Review: A Flock of Seagulls may be best known for their hit song 'I Ran (So Far Away)' but the band's influence on synthpop and new wave, outside of that claim to fame, is actually much greater. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1982, features the iconic track as well as other memorable cuts such as 'Space Age Love Song' and 'Wishing', adding extra far-out elements to the formula already cut out by The Cure. The band's distinctive hairstyle, featuring asymmetrical cuts and a gravity-defying swoop, became known as the "Flock of Seagulls haircut," even refernced in the film 'Pulp Fiction'. Cleopatra US's reissue of the album is a reminder of the band's lasting impact on 80s pop culture.

Review: A re-pressing of a classic album that's been on plan for over 15 years, we're delighted that Air Formation's Daylight Storms has finally landed in store. And trust us, taking the form of a special limited edition sunburst red and orange vinyl, it's well worth the wait. Receiving a swathe of categorisations from dream pop, dream gaze, to post rock, one thing's for sure - this album is definitely of the dreamy variety. Journeying through a collage of surreal, gently enveloping noise and held against a backdrop of choir-like vocals and picturesque melodies, this is an album that floats into view. Sounds you'll want to sink into time and time again.

Review: Having just reformed earlier this year for their first headline tour in almost a decade, what better time to revisit the criminally underrated and often overlooked fourth full-length from power-pop-punks The All-American Rejects? Originally released in 2012, and following on from the mega successful yet sonically safe When The World Comes Down, the band strived to push themselves further out of their comfort zones than they'd initially ever thought possible. Channelling everything from 60s mod garage rock to orchestral big band jazz, yet all coalesced within the whimsical, sardonic and endearingly earnest penmanship of primary songwriter Tyson Ritter, Kids In The Street is that curious project that offered fans an entirely new, static-shattering chapter that they weren't at the time ready to digest. A decade on, what was once considered their swan song might not clasp onto that title for too long more, yet is in dire need of reappraisal either way.

Review: Nana is a Japanese manga created by Ai Yazawa and first published in Cookie magazine in 2000. It tells the story of two young women, both called Nana, who meet on the train to Tokyo and, despite their different personalities, become roommates and friends. The manga was a great success with readers, thanks in particular to the quality of its plot, its characters and its soundtrack, which includes several original songs written by Ai Yazawa herself. It was published in 21 volumes in Japan and has been translated into many languages, including English and French. In 2006, the manga was adapted into an anime by the Madhouse studio, under the direction of Morio Asaka. This 47-episode adaptation brought Nana to an even wider audience, and was also praised for its quality. This first-edition anime soundtrack is the result of the collaboration of various artists, including Tomoki Hasegawa, Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia Lufkin. Their unique compositions and interpretations capture the emotions of the characters and the essence of the world of Nana. The album brings together iconic songs that amplify the impact of key moments in the story, creating a memorable musical experience.
