Review: We're not quite sure about the story behind this EP - Bathurst have not made clear whether it's the first in a series, or whether there's a theme - but the music on show is well-worth checking. Zoe Leonard dons the Simmerdown guise on excellent opener 'Legitimacy', a slowly unfurling affair that craftily combines sun-kissed ambient electronics with cut-up, club-ready beats, gargantuan bass and 140 style vocal cut-ups. David Hanke delivers two contrasting cuts: the shuffling, bass-heavy, spacey-but-sleazy excellence of 'Deep Shit Part 3' as Black Soyls, and the cheerier and bouncier 'Mirrorsides' under his given name. Our favourite though is ITO's 'Citylights', a jazzy, slipped instrumental number full of beautiful piano flourishes and languid bass.

First up is a tune that deserves the title of being one of the most overlooked gems in the label's catalogue - it has been little known ever since the first time it was released in the early '80s. Terrie from the Nairobi Sisters sings on 'Left With a Broken Heart' which melts into a killer dub-wise groove with fine melodica. On the flip is one of Barrington Lvi's best tunes, 'Black Man Heart', with a killer dub from Scientist remix next to the disco-tinged original.

Review: Upstairs Asylum Recordings is one of the many seminal Detroit labels run by local legend Norm Talley. It's right in the middle of a busy run right now with no fewer superb run with three new EPs all dropping in quick succession. This one is a split EP with US duo Solid Gold Playaz taking care of the a-side. As always with this pair, their sounds are deep and dusty house with exquisite melodies tugging at the heart. On the flip, Gari Romalis steps up with the slick percussive skip of 'Detroit After Dark' then 'Panties' from Brian Neal brings jacked up analogue groves that lean into techno with a big fat bassline.

Review: The high class Melodies International reissue label co-run by Floating Points and Elliot Bernard is back with the seance in its Melodies Record Club series. This time it is blistering club DJ Ben UFO who gets his pick after Four Tet had his go earlier in the year. The two tunes he pick have long been staples in his set either though on the surface of it neither are typical club tunes. They have never before been available on vinyl for that reason but we're glad they are now. 'Drums' is off Laurie Spiegel's 1980 experimental album The Expanding Universe and is all oscillating synths and computer generated percussion while Olof Dreijer from the Swedish band the Knife offers 'Echoes From Mamori' on the flip, a more tropical and whimsical cut of new age licked house made from arpeggios and frog samples.

Review: First cropping up in 2012, the mammoth A-Sides series from the titanic Swedish techno label Drumcode charges ahead into its 11th installment (can you believe it?) while also managing to split said installment alone across seven slices of vinyl. This is the fourth record of seven in part eleven. Only gigantic-room techno could justify this waxen audacity; the music is braggadocious to boot, with contributions from Nicolas Taboada, BEC, Avision and Cosmic Boys. The tracks here are as dreamy as they are goosebump-inducing, easily seguing between massive transitions and drops to cathartic reesebound trances.

Review: Johnnie Taylor never really wrote any of his own music and he couldn't play any instrument particularly well but that hasn't stopped him becoming known as a rather accomplished soul artist. He penned an incredible 30 odd albums and more than 120 singles as a leading male vocalist in the sixties and works dunder names like 'Blues Wailer' and the 'Philosopher Of Soul'. He was a doo-wop group member initially back in the 50s but by the mid-sixties he was working with Stax as a blues artist. 'Let's Get Back On' on the A-side here is from his 1999 album Gotta Get The Groove back and is backed with a beautiful ballad from the legendary Bobby 'Blue' Bland.

Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

Review: If you're looking for an introduction into the world of original 1970s and '80s gospel funk and gospel soul, you can't do better than Tone B Nimble's ongoing Soul is My Salvation series of double A-side "45s". This is the eighth edition in the series and contains two more thoroughly obscure workouts. On the A-side you'll find Bibleway Church of God in Christ's 'Since Jesus Came Into My Life', a fizzing gospel-soul stomper that was first featured on the organisation's 1980 private press LP What Do You Say About Jesus. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Eliezer Mass Choir's 'Where He Leads Me', a more disco-tinged number that reminded us a little of the Joubert Singers' much-loved 'Stand on the Word'.

Review: Peru has enjoyed a thriving and exciting music scene since the mid-1960s. Bands such as Los Saicos, Los Shain's, and Los York's, to name just a few, released a number of brilliant records that drove young fans crazy and set an example for many to follow. The end of the decade brought about an evolution in sound and new music, as Peruvian bands kept an eye on the groundbreaking British and US artists. One of them was Traffic Sound, founded in Lima in 1967. Over a very short period of time the band managed to successfully develop their career, and by 1971 their Latin influences had overpowered the psychedelic prog vibe of their previous records. The song became a local hit and several versions were recorded by different Peruvian artists. On the other side of this single we find Black Sugar, a Peruvian band considered to be a pioneer group in Latin America in mixing funk influences with rock and Latin rhythms. In 1976, following their gig at Coliseo Amauta in Lima, opening the night for the legendary Spanish band Barrabas, they started to show a growing interest in disco music, resulting in some line-up changes with members leaving the project due to their lack of interest in the new sound and new ones joining in. Their own take on 'La Camita' was released in 1978, and adds a modern twist to the original song.

Review: Grime legends Trends, Boylan and Slimzee have made independent names for themselves over the years for their enduring contributions to the underground; the former two artists first cropped up on our radar after a string of horror-movie-themed grime bits which first proliferated virally on the internet. Slimzee, on the other hand, has been there from the beginning, co-founding the legendary Rinse FM pirate station among other things. We can't contain our excitement for this fresh, psychotic release for Etch's Sneaker Social Club; returning to the trio's penchant for oppressively trappy instrumentals, there are newer explorations in breakstep and garage, fleshing out the many teeth-gritted possibilities of the eight-bar rhythm. Review: REPRESS ALERT!: The fifth volume of their magnificent Super Spicy Recipe series finds the label's crew in full party effect, with the six tracks here crossing the borders from peak time dropping to essential warm up/down gear. First up, Vagabundo Club Social takes 'Beso Loco' featuring Tomjake Sax and turns up the controls to maximum fun, the Colombians throwing in tons of groove and Afro -influenced percussion, before Monsieur Van Pratt and Guatemalan singer Teff Brolo. This all-original track is leaded by the powerful soulful vocals, accompanied by a groove-infused piano which keeps the beats nicely anchored, followed by the ever dependable Reece Johnson who closes off this side. Flip it over for Bernardo Mota & Boogietraxx and the euphoric 'Keep On Doing Your Thing' before Sartorial takes proceedings into slightly jazzier territory on B2 and B3.

Review: Hands up all of those who thought Basement Jaxx's Simon Ratcliffe would end up making slowly unfurling spiritual jazz with famed London improvisers Binker Golding (saxophone) and Moses Boyd (drums)? Us neither. To give Ratcliffe credit, this debut single from his new jazz-wise project is simply stunning. Golding's wild sax solos and Boyd's brilliant drumming catch the ear and provide an air of authenticity, but it's Ratcliffe's contributions - drowsy sunrise electronics and meditative synthesizer motifs on A-side "Village Of The Sun", sparkling piano motifs on "Ted" and warm bass on both - that tie everything together and ensure that both tracks are worth far more than the sum of their parts. A surprise, yes, but the results are both thrilling and spellbinding.

Deep House
Review: The second release for the Inner Shift music group comes as four track various artists EP. First up is Mick Welch with his second outing, supplying some deep and Chicago rhythmic house, eloquently introducing an acid bass line later on the piece, which he then breaks down further with jacking drum patterns of the John Heckle variety. It's also Rai Scott's second outing and he opts for movie soundtrack horns, synths, and subtle tribal percussions that give "Beyon Earth's Atmosphere" that little extra push. Miles Sagnia adds some distinguished weight to the EP alongside Brad Peterson, with Sagnia flirting with trancey elements in "Tears of Saturn", while Peterson strips his mix back with raw kicks, softened by hollow tribal drums and spacey synths.

Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Review: Air Vinyl have secured a deal that allows them to reissue the seminal joint album by Benny The Butcher and 38 Spesh. The second part of the album comes later in the year, but the first one from 2018 is in the spotlight here. Review: Talk about adaptive design. Zoh Amber, Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt are anything but household names, but rank among the finest musicians in the US today. All three have carved a name for themselves as improvisational maestros, capable of working with others on-the-fly to create powerful sounds and soundtracks in a display of artistic talent you just don't get to see - or hear - everyday. Corsano and Orcutt were no strangers when Flower School was recorded, around spring 2023. Nor were Amba and Corsano - the pair had just finished a joint tour of the US West Coast. The three had never engaged together, though, but they probably should have. Review: 2017 was the year that electronic wonk-funk saw its heyday, and uncoincidentally, it was also the year that B. Bravo (Adam Mori) saw the release of his first album 'Paradise'. 2022 is the year the genre should make a comeback, after just five years. If such were to be the case, Bravo's second album 'Vizionz' would be the catalyst. Charting collaborations with rapper Def Sound and singer Sally Green, this one points towards only the best detuned sonics, synth bass licks and Miami heat-hazed vizionz.

Leather Blvd is a woozy and lo-fi late-night trip through a range of narcotic atmospheres. The raps range from slurred and drenched in reverb to more crisp and well-defined as tracks range from short and sweet to epic and sprawling. There is a real intimacy to this record as well as a borrowing from jazz as these tracks unfurl and slowly make their way into your affections. It is another great coming together of this contemporary pair.

Review: B12's 1993 debut album, Electro-Soma, has long been regarded as one of intelligent dance music's "must-have releases". Offering a decidedly intergalactic blend of otherworldly techno, ambient and deep space electronica, it remains a brilliant piece of work. Here, Warp Records give it the reissue treatment, packaging the peerless original album with a second disc of early B12 rarities and hard-to-find cuts recorded during the same period. There's naturally plenty to admire on this bonus disc, from the shimmering electro bustle of "Transient Pathways" and Motor City futurism of "Debris", to the intoxicating ambient brilliance of "Go With The Hiss". That this material is every bit as good as the tracks included on Electro-Soma is testament to the (then) duo's rarely matched brilliance.

Review: Baby Buddha was Charles Hornday, David Javelosa, Meg Brazill and Todd Rosa, a band that released just one album in 1981 then a second in 1987. Their debut is a cult classic that brought new ideas to the world of no wave and synth, electro and rock. With its chilly minimal computer beats and post-punk vocal deliveries, it makes for a still future-sounding world of sound that is danceable and atmospheric as it covers classics like 'Stand By Your Man' and 'All Shook Up' in a hugely idiosyncratic fashion. This is weirdly wonderful, playfully scary and artfully DIY music that manages plenty of reference points and ends up sounding like nothing else.

Review: American rapper and record producer Baby Keem dropped his debut album The Melodic Blue over a year ago but only now is the vinyl landing. Back then it was a rather surprise release and it finds the enigmatic rapper expanding into a wide world of sound that builds on his love of trap and melody. There is plenty of intimate writing and lots of his trademark switching between singing and rapping with fun and propulsive moments next to more playful ad-libs and goofy beats. Review: Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Bay Rose says she makes music for those that are "aimless and heartbroken". Her magnificently rich voice conveys the pain and lament everyone has felt at some point in their life of this new sophomore album Through & Through. There is an honesty to it that has defined all her work to date and a determination to really say something with her music. Unrestricted by genre though couched in hip hop and r&b, lead singles like 'Dance With Me' marry lo-fi beat work with her smoky, raw soul vocals to make for something truly impactful. There is no wonder this one has already had plenty of press praise on both sides of the Atlantic.

Review: Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the mysterious steel pan outfit from Hamburg, have amassed a cult following around the globe. With a slew of classic 7"s and three critically acclaimed full length albums, they set a high bar for themselves, one which they clearly intend on pushing to even higher heights with this new offering. On their fourth album BRSB, Bacao return with more of the same, but more of the same with them is of course inherently different. Covering songs that span genres, and range from mega-hits to underground album cuts, they make them their own with their unique approach to the traditional steel pans of Trinidad and Tobago. While part of the allure of a new Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band album is finding out what covers they choose, it is equally intriguing to see what original tunes they've cooked up alongside these, and this record is foul of standout originals. from 'In The Crosshairs' to 'Grilled' to 'Treasure Quest'.

Review: German funkateer Bjorn Wagner launched the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band in 2007 following months spent learning to play steel drums during an extended stay in Trinidad and Tobago. 11 years on, Wagner and his trusty backing band return with album number two, "The Serpent's Mouth". As usual, the set sees them gleefully combine killer grooves - a mix-and-match fusion of funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz-funk - with a hint of humid tropical music and the distinctive melodies of oil barrel steel drums. There are, of course, nods to reggae and calypso (see "Real Hot") and a few eyebrow-raising cover versions, of which their rendition of Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme" from "Miami Vice" stands out.

Review: Unfairly labelled as a novel curio when they first emerged, the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is a genuine expression of Mighty Mocambos man Bjorn Wagner's love of Trinidadian steel pan music. Their tracks - often, but not always, quirky cover versions - combined authentic funk instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar, horns) with the timeless and distinctive sound of steel drums. BRSB, the combo's fourth album, is another summery and effortlessly entertaining treat. Review: The Youth Are Getting Restless serves as much as a Bad Brains greatest hits collection as it does live album. Recorded at Amsterdam's iconic Paradiso Theatre in 1987 whilst touring, 'I Against I'; this legendary performance wouldn't be officially released until 1990, arriving after Quickness. The collection of material here is crafted from the band's first three (and arguably most definitive albums), with several classic cuts from the self-titled and, 'Rock For Light', such as, 'Sailin' On', 'Banned In D.C.', and, 'Pay To Cum', played at blistering pace with their trademark incomparable energy. There's also, of course, some space made between the hardcore punk chaos for more chilled-out reggae-indebted sequences, including a cover of Dennis Brown's, 'Revolution', as well as a rearranged medley of 'She's a Rainbow' and 'Day Tripper', by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, respectively. While the ensuing decade and projects that came with it would be steeped in line-up shifts and internal strife, this live collection is a flashback to a simpler time when H.R. was the frenetic frontman at the top of the hardcore food-chain.
