Count On Me (3:41)
Magic (3:35)
Review: Although operative in the early 1980s, the quality of B & The Family's boogie-era soul recordings only became evident five years ago when the Super Disco Edits label unearthed and issued a couple of their previously unreleased recordings. These two never-before-released jams come from the same period. A-side 'Count on Me' is simply superb: a squelchy and soulful electrofunk number of the kind that were frequently released in the early '80s by the Solar System and Salsoul labels. Flipside 'Magic' is a little fuzzier and hazier - in part because it was probably transferred from a partially damaged tape - but no less impressive, delivering an attractive blend of dewy-eyed male lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer sounds and dreamy chords.

B Beat Classic (5:47)
B Beat Classic (instrumental) (5:52)
Review: B+'s B-Beat Classic is originally from 1983. It is an early hip-hop and electronic fusion with some great talk-box vocals and a loose-limbed mix of percussion and drums. It moves slowly and purposefully, with scratches over the top and unhinged funk soon permeating your body. Leftover tape was used to create the effects and original copies have a note that the tune was dedicated to a first generation Boston disco DJ named Jim Stuard whose career was cut short by the Everard Baths fire in New York City in 1977.

Listen To Me (0:30)
Review: Powerful belters from soul supernova Baby Huey. The only solo 45s he cut for Curtom Records before he passed away aged only 26, this was released posthumously and OG copies regularly go for over 200 pounds. Now reissued on Soul Brother, the two sides give you the full fat Huey; "Hard Times" hits with a raw Lee Fields style gravelly, story-telling delivery while "Listen To Me" shows Huey's deft ability to band-lead an all-out rock jam. Raw and emotional, Huey left this world far too soon.

Was Dog A Doughnut (3:24)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band are one of the curious outfits who sound as if they're right out of the '70s, when in fact they are happily playing on their instruments in 2016, and making some serious burners. Their zesty ad energetic blend of horns, steel pan and live drums is the sort of African funk for those looking for some fresh and innovative rhythms in this day and age, with "Love Like This" providing exactly that - a bass-heavy, tripped-out kinda groove that spits quality from all angles. On the flip of this tidy 7", Cat Stevens classic "Was Dog A Doughnut" is taken on a more tropical flex, stripping down the groove and laying out one hell of a steel-pan concoction. Bless.

Review: This collection of the Aussie funk and soul band The Bamboos' favourite cuts is a celebration of their 20 year anniversary. It culls cuts from 2007's Rawville and 2010's 4 and is a limited release with a full colour gatefold sleeve. Led by guitarist and main songwriter/producer Lance Ferguson, The Bamboos have been hugely prolific over the years, putting out no fewer than nine studio albums, two live albums, twenty-seven singles, and all while serving up many incendiary shows. They draw in elements of funk, pop, rock, psych, hip-hop, indie and soundtrack music into their own unique sound.

Living Disco Club (Tonico70 Reloved) (4:24)
Review: Banda Male was a collective that formed in a home studio in Salerno, one of the historic districts in the South Italy. It was the initiative of composer and keys man Peppe Maiellano and rapper, DJ and producer Tonico Settanta. The rest of the cast is ever rotating and the music they make is a lively mix of disco, funk and soul with signature Italo melodies. This new single is taken from their June 2021 album UFO Bar and is a low slung number with a steamy vocal and a somewhat sleazy bassline. 'Living Disco Club' (Tonico 70 Reloved) then slows it down further with even more twirling melodies.

Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Review: Canadian recording sensation Gary Beals dropped his new single 'All of Me' back in summer ahead of his latest new album The Melody Within which arrived in autumn. It's another joyous and uplifting single that has big claps and shiny keys all topped off with his soaring and super sweet vocals that carry an infectious energy and capture the spirit of summer. On the flip is a more downbeat soul slow burner with sentimental lyrics and pained acoustic guitar lines that really tug on the heartstrings. He says, "All of Me is just another extension of the feelgood music I've always desired to make" and we agree.

Geriatric Dance (3:04)
Review: Dedicated to the Hammond-heavy 1960s soul-jazz sounds of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Grant Green and Reuben Wilson, the Beat Bronco Organ Trio are a fresh outfit with classic inspirations. The Madrid threesome's debut single is something of a retro-futurist treat. We're really enjoying A-side "Easy Baby", a loose and languid fusion of ear-pleasing Hammond licks, laidback, breakbeat-driven drums and flanged jazz guitars that impressively increases in intensity throughout, culminating in a frenzy of sweaty drums and eyes-closed guitar solos. "Geriatric Dance", meanwhile, is even more up-tempo, with high octane Hammond and jazz guitar solos stretching out over a feverish funk drumbeat.

As such it is the perfect moment to drop a new recording of music from one of their many session for the BBC. In all, the band cut over 300 tunes for the Beeb and most of them in 1963 when they were in the corporation's studios almost weekly. Review: We go all weak at the knees and starry-eyed simply at the mention of the words 'Athens of the North'. The label has one of the best catalogues out there and adding to that richness now is this glorious Memphis funky 45rpm. It comes from Ben (Benjamin Robinson of Ben & Coco) and the Tight Squeeze Band and features two unreleased tunes from the tape archive. The A-side is a real dancefloor heater with lovely frayed, lo-fi production and tight, quick drums. Neat guitar riffs, distant chords and lively vocal ad-libs bring the energy then on the flip things get gorgeously deep and vibey on 'Summer Rest'.

Review: Vancouver-based DJ and producer Nick Bike here recasts lyrics by East Oakland rapper Too Short's 'Blow The Whistle' in his own fine and inimitable style. The original - a hyphy track aimed right at the floor, with bubbling synth bass - came in 2006 and was produced by Lil-Jon and here is returned to its 70s funk roots. Donna Summer's 1979 chart-topping hit 'Bad Girls' gets sampled and dropped int this new version with extra whistles, chanted mantras plenty of sure fire, disco-ready energy. It's a reinvigorated hip hop anthem destined for hardcore spin backs once the clubs reopen.

His progressive bassline nails you to the floor and brings plenty of house music feels while the hip hp swagger makes it all the more dance able. Nick Bike, resident mainstay of the label, is an all-rounder. A self-described open-format DJ, his sole purpose is to please the crowd, and the crowd only. He does it with some big old boom bap drums and some busy and funky horn stabs, while the original vocals from Ed OG bring that old school flavour over the new school sound with plenty of added scratching for extra flex. Let's Go (4:26)
Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North imprint has provided soul and disco DJs with some killer 7" reissues since launching earlier this year. Here, he uncovers another obscure but oh-so-good gem. There's little information available about Bileo, aside from the fact that they released just two singles between 1979 and '83. "You Can Win" was there debut. It's a deliciously loose and celebratory chunk of disco-soul featuring spellbinding horns and a cheery, wholeheartedly positive vocal. It's the sort of disco-soul gem that makes us want to hug complete strangers before running into the sea fully clothed. The more low-slung disco-funk flipside, "Let's Go", is almost as good. Recommended.

This Is What You Are (The Brazilian Rime) (4:53)
Review: "This Is What You Are" is undoubtedly Mario Biondi's most celebrated work. He first sung it for original composers Was A Bee in 2004, before re-recording it for his debut album (alongside the High Five Quintet) in 2006. Since then it has been reissued or remixed on numerous occasions. Here it gets reissued on a tidy 7" single, with a punchy radio edit - a swinging, Sunday afternoon style chunk of Latin soul-jazz rich in jaunty grooves, soaring orchestration and smooth vocals - being joined by the "Brazilian Rime" rework. This tasty re-recording re-casts the song as a breezy, samba-fired slab of early 1970s style Brazilian MPB. It's an inspired interpretation and could well become the definitive version of the track.

There's much to admire across the two tracks, which combine memorable grooves with some stellar musicianship and a wealth of addictive melodic hooks. The pick for club plays is A-side 'Kakra Kakra', a subtly Afro-influenced nu-jazz workout rich in rubbery bass, loose-limbed drums, hazy horns and energy-packed electric piano solos. They simmer things down on the B-side, where 'Eastbound' joins the dots between the languid, sun-down jazz-funk of Roy Ayers' most laidback moments and the head-nodding shuffle of instrumental hip-hop.

This re-cut version of Markie's classic ode to unrequited love has been remixed and remastered to sound better than ever. Released in 1989, far before the concept of the "friendzone" had crystallised and become a popular meme, we can hear its nascent stirrings in this subversion of original-era hip-hop, in which Markie crudely and comedically spans disgruntled, dejected raps and twinging croons, all expressive of the pain of rejection.

There are strong James Brown vibes on this one with The Black Dove' 'I'm Telling' being a deep cut, soul infused roller. 'Break Free' in particular was produced with the intent of "challenging people (everyone) to wake up and at the very least-give some thought to breaking themselves free from the chains of the mental incarceration, all the while ridding ourselves from the illusion that we reside freely on what many of us ultimately see as a slave plantation." Musically it is dark, intense, involving stuff that layers off-beat jazz keys with a driving deep house beat.

With the instrumental version also appearing on the B-side, the single sallies forth in bold fashion as a limited edition never to be re-pressed again. Blade, nominally pre-dating the Wesley Snipes vampire flick franchise by nearly a decade, was a super early player in the early London rap scene, which might sound strange given that he’s flowing in an American accent. Evidently, Blade’s music charts such early days in the UK Britcore sound that it details an earlier juncture at which point American primacy hadn’t yet worn off. Even so, ‘Mind Of An Ordinary Citizen’, first released on the label 691 Influential, is a shining example of Britcore’s early sound, coming laden as ever with whistling scratches and huge brass bursts.

Review: You've got to hand it to Jazzman Records; their dedication to unearthing and releasing killer funk and jazz is simply unsurpassed. With this issue of Barbados group The Blue Rhythm Combo, the label plucks selective album and singles tracks for a triple pack vinyl edition that introduces our ears to rare Caribbean funk gems infused with tropical tight rhythms, fatback drums, heavy bass and punchy brass stabs. There are dope jams galore, most notably a superb version of "Black Water Gold" penned by Louis Villery and made famous by Africa Music Machine back in 1973. A mixed bag of instrumental and vocal tracks and an essential purchase if you have a healthy interest in funk.

Take Me With You (3:25)
Take Me With You (version) (3:30)
Review: With sunshine becoming a regular occurrence again just in time for summer, two of France's more soulful producers have decided to join forces and offer up something suitably warm and relaxing. With the assistance of vocalist Kahina Ouali, Blundetto and Booker Gee have recorded a killer, Hammond-laden version of Lyn Christopher classic "Take Me With You" that sits somewhere between the organs-and-lo-fi-drum machines flex of Timmy Thomas' "We Can't We Live Together" and the soulful reggae grooves of 1980s lovers rock. The fine A-side original mix, which boasts Ouali's full vocal, is our pick of the pair, though the flipside instrumental "Version" mix, in which Booker Gee gets busy on the organ, is also superb.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Review: Scott Hendy's Boca 45 project has remained committed to the craft of funky-as-hell cut up breaks and beats in the time-honoured hip-hop tradition. From the early days on Grand Central through to his recent drops on B-Block Music, the quality has never dipped. In the wake of this year's Boca 45 Digs Cavendish LP, he's back with this lush, limited yellow 7". You should know the drill by now - boom bap drums, sweet and sultry licks and plenty of crafty edits to keep the dancers on their toes. Both sides are primed for party people, so get busy and drop it on the platters tout suite.

Review: Boca 45 has more than earned his stripes as one of Bristol’s foremost experts on sizzling grooves, and now he’s plying his trade on this new series of party tools pressed to 7”. The focus is on cut and paste techniques that keep the vibe rough and raw, and ‘Bang Ya Head’ is a wild style patchwork which will raise the temperature wherever it gets played out. Anyone break digger or hip-hop head worth their salt will recognise the classic hook running through the centre of ‘Uptown Party People’, and Boca knows how to ride it and make the classic key refrain all his own.

Review: Not to be confused with either the album of the same name nor a prior 7" single with different music on it, this limited cut contains four outtakes and demos recorded by T. Rex's Marc Bolan in 1966. Later in 1981, backing instrumentals were recorded and added to Bolan's vocals, under the watchful eye of his trusted former manager Simon Napier-Bell. From 'Mustang Ford' to the later hit 'The Perfurmed Garden...', Bolan sounds all but overdubbed here; he is at one with each rollicking, slick backing, freewheeling and near yelling on this rock altarpiece.

Review: Bolla's Afrikan Basement debuted with a warm welcome in 2008 as a limited 7" and is one of the many essential projects Joe Clasusell has been involved with over the years. Now it gets revisited on this tasty 7". The a-side is a special edit of "Makkusa", a steamy, spiritual, deeply layered and emotional house track that is lead by a standout sax line. Joaquin's Sacred Rhythm dub is just that on the flip-side, a punchy rework with groaning vocals and a tribal feel, marching drums and plenty of the steam and sweat that makes his music so unique and powerful.

Review: One of Canada's most influential hip-hop protagonists Jorun Bombay returns to local Halifax label Black Buffalo, an imprint that launched in 2005 with a white vinyl limited 45 issue....Following his recent edit series comes this fantastic cover of RA in the form of "Revisiting The Sunshine". Authentic to its soulful core, the release is perfectly timed as we're all beginning to miss the summer moving into the colder months. It's backed by an equally sunny shakedown version of "Funky Sensation" getting a precision Bombay treatment. Sensational.

Review: True school hip hop producer Jorun Bombay is a master of the edit and always brings classic '80s and '90s approaches to production. He's had a busy year in 2020 but has still found time to turn out one more 7", this time on Canada's Back Buffalo. First up he takes his decision tools to 'Comin' Like A Rhino', layers in the big stabs, draws out the breaks and generally ensures maximum destruction. 'The B Side Won' is another high impact weapon with plenty of mad effects, rolling beats and big hits that come with fresh raps primed and ready to detonate the floor.

He kicks off the first instalment in the series with 'NBTT', a head-nodding, toe-tapping gem that elements of Biz Markie's 1987 single 'Nobody Beats The Biz' with tough-but-bouncy new beats and subtle instrumental samples. Review: To mark the fifth anniversary of Black Buffalo Records, Jorun Bombay has decided to remake some of the earliest mash-ups and remixes he released on the imprint, with this "45" boasting a fresh take on 2016 single 'Concrete Jungle (Boogie)' - a genuine dancefloor killer that peppers a punchy, up-tempo hip-hop beat with elements of Kool and the Gang classic 'Jungle Boogie'. Arguably even better is A-side 'Celebration in the Heart', a borderline genius fusion of two of the best-loved party classics of all time: Dee-Lite's 'Groove is in the Heart' and Kool and the Gang's 'Celebration'. Like mixing peanut butter and jam, it just works.

Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

Review: Canadian Jorun Bombay is a long time remix master who now lands on Soundweight Records with his latest cut up and reworking efforts. The A-side finds him take on Blondie's legendary 'Rapture', which mixed slick raps with post-punk guitars. Here it becomes sweet rolling funk gem with molten chords and plenty of soul. The flip-side is a tropical rework of 'Don't Pay Any Fuller' that ups the bass and beefs out the drums, while layering in steamy chords and percussion that brim with character. These are two more classics in the spotless catalogue of Jorun Bombay.

Review: Having spent much of the recent portion of his career crafting high quality mash-ups and sneaky Jackson family re-edits, former hip-hop beat-maker Jorun Bombay has flipped the script a little of late. Like his previous release, "The Space Jazz-Funk Experience", "The Planets Edit" sees the Canadian producer getting busy with an all time intergalactic jazz-funk classic. A-side "Planet Edit 1" sets the tone, rearranging a space funk workout that's light on drums but heavy on Moog solos, drowsy electric piano chords, warm bass and hazy guitar riffs. You'll find a more floor-friendly outing on the flip, where "Planet Edit 2" underpins deep space synth solos with crunchy, head-nodding hip-hop style funk beats.

Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Review: Boo is a solo Japanese boogie vocalist who was largely active in the noughties; his most eminent album 'Post Soulman' was released in two volumes, and did thrilling justice to Boo's soulful vocals and faux-Philadelphia street beatstyle. Now rereleased as a single (originally one of the tracks from the album), 'BOOGIE DRIVE 678' gets a good look back on. With a busy mix and lyrics reflecting on the butterflies one feels when encountering someone who makes us feel "high inside", this reissue also comes with the venerable steel pan mix on the B.

Review: Mother's I'd Like To Funk shows off their reissue credentials once more here with a real sizzler from Danish pop group Boulevard. The tracks are from their little-known 1981 album American Dream and have been fully licensed here. A-side 'Ready For Your Love' is a sweet street soul gem with snappy drums and fleshy arps next to the aloof male vocals. 'Still Ready' on the flip is a Synthphonic Dub that has a very similar rhythm and sound but with some more native chords over the top and an extra bounce and talk box vocals.
