Review: Who'd have thought, some 54 or so years ago, that the Birmingham four piece called Black Sabbath would not only go on to enjoy success long into the next millennium but also create a style of music - heavy metal - that would spread globally and become one of culture's most dominant forces for decades to come. That's what happened though, and the strength of the material captured for radio broadcast at the iconic Olympia Theatre in Paris on December 20 1970 is a big clue, at least with the benefit of hindsight. As well as their genre-defining eponymous debut, the band dropped the Paranoid album this year too, showing not only how inspired but also prolific they were at the time, and naturally that anthemic song is present here, alongside colossal tunes like 'Iron Man', 'War Pigs' and 'Black Sabbath'. They sound uttterly unstoppable here, and, certainly for a fair few years to follow anyway, that's what they proved to be.

Sounds Of The Sea originally came out in 1981, and it's never been reissued since. Making its first ever appearance on vinyl, this captivating, mysterious album remains wholly out of time and place, existing in its own sphere inhabited by flute, drones and whale song alike.

Review: Incredibly powerful stuff, Blazing Worlds - AKA Justin Wright & Grant Corum - recorded their self-titled latest album over a long summer in the US Midwest. Evidently inspired by what conditions were like, the official release information here opens with a reference to J.G. Ballard's landmark science fiction, The Drowned World, which, for all intents and purposes, could become a reality in the next few centuries. A planet so scorched lagoon waters that have flooded cities seem to burn by midday, there's a sense of rising temperatures about this truly hallucinatory album. Drone, ambient, use whatever label you prefer, this feels like you're either orbiting the sun itself, or looking out on lands that have long since succumbed to desertification, wondering when the scorching dunes might give way to some place more liveable. Atmospheric, futuristic, and deeply effective.

To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. And this is before we even mention the fact The Rolling Stones were also involved, only beaten to the top of the bill by The Beatles. On the day, Liverpool's Fab Four were presented their award by none other than Roger Moore, and then proceeded to play their first live show in 15 weeks. 'She Loves You', 'You Can't Do That', 'Long Tall Sally', and 'Can't Buy Me Love' were among the highlights, with an audience of 10,000 packing out the Empire Pool in Wembley for the entire day. Once again the sonically inquisitive pair mix up analogue synths with electro-acoustic experiments, epic and adventurous soundscapes and plenty of raw texture, hooky pop melodies and innocent rhythms. Along the way the duo take influence from their heroes including Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter and Kraftwerk on a record that was laid down in the back of Smith's synthesizer repair shop. Each one is deftly detailed with myriad synth sounds, and atmospheric motifs and they all add up to a perfectly deep, dreamy and immersive listen.

Review: Two years after Marc Richter released his most widely available album Back To Comm album, Alphabet 1968, on the ever amazing Tape imprint, he delivered another landmark with Earth. Originally, the music was conceived to accompany two screenings of the video Earth by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen. First commissioned for the Sydney Festival 2011, the visual work was scored by Melbourne's Oren Ambarchi for the grand unveiling, but then toured the planet, with different musicians invited to reimagine the soundtrack for different locations. Germany's Black To Comm was enlisted for Berlin and Krakow, and as the smart money was always on, he offered up a strange, beguiling, abstract but highly visceral score. Almost impossible to describe, at once witty but incredibly sad, troubling and intriguing, traumatised but honest, it might be the perfect accompaniment to a film in which several frames are dedicated to landscapes piled high with human corpses. Following the two live performances, the producer opted to make these 'tunes' his next record, which is now finally getting a reissue.

Review: When Black To Comm's staggeringly powerful Alphabet 1968 first landed, rather confusingly in 2010, it stood out on a burgeoning ambient and drone landscape for several reasons. Firstly, it was rather short. Certainly in comparison to similar sounding releases of the day - less than 45 minutes. Secondly, it managed to cram, or rather delicately introduce, myriad sub genres and styles within the relatively brief run time. Each track comes across as though it is autonomous, yet the collection really needs to be explored as a whole to get the full impact. So while 'Trapez' has this stunning, purposefully naive quality to it - like a music box fed through various levels of distortion, chimes straining through the muffled playback - preceding number 'Forst' is this grand, palatial overture of refrains and background marching drums, taking up a full quarter of the entire album on its own. Elsewhere, 'Traum Gmbh' brings fret and chaos to the equation, shrill notes invoking horror movie scenes, while 'Musik Fur Alle' invites us into an aural realm that owes much to candlelit folk tales.

Review: Italian composer Caterina Barbieri has enjoyed a walloping career so far as a contemporary experimental electronic music composer and producer, in part thanks to her rather mind-melting explorations in computational and generative methods, which have aided her creation of icy, god-playing deconstructed 'scapes. It was hardly expected she'd stop at her Mego debut Ecstatic Computation or the more recent Spirit Exit, though, and now comes the curt six-track statement Myuthafoo. A new effort via Barbieri's own label light-years, this one was actually written at the same time as her debut, and contains an array of modular-modelled sequences in similar fashion, backed up by intensely spiritual augmentations (such as ultra-deep reverb and clever portamentos) on the production end.

Review: Tel Aviv-based band Boom Pan marks their 20th anniversary with an album that mixes up cinematic atmospherics and high-powered surf rock. It is their first for the Batov Records label and has eight tracks of global sonic tripping that go from Middle Eastern exotica to scores to an imagined Spaghetti Western and on to sandy beach parties by the Mediterranean. It's all made with a mix of catchy guitar riffs, tuba basslines and big drums that immerse you in engaging sounds and great musicianship that is always pushing at the traditional genre boundaries.

Review: Discom continues to unearth genuine gems from the former Yugoslavia. The dusty-fingered reissue imprint's latest pick comes from 1983. It's the sole, self-titled album from Boom Selekija, a relatively short-lived eight-piece made up of funk and soul musicians from other Belgrade bands, who disbanded shortly after the LP was released. Musically, the album pairs vibrant and authentic disco-boogie instrumentation - with some Eastern European flourishes - with impassioned Serbian-language vocals. It's a quietly impressive set all told, with our picks including the spacey and loved-up stomper 'Studentski Stan', the rubbery bass guitar, rock-style guitar solos and intergalactic synth textures of 'Vladina Gitara', the subtly jazz-funk-infused, slap bass-propelled 'Juljaz Me', and the almost beat-free jazz-funk sleaze of 'Frizerka Naja'.

Review: David Bowie's legacy lives on years after his death - that is if it hasn't even grown since the great artist's sad passing. This unique live album was recorded in 1990 at the Milton Keynes Bowl and saw the cute singer performing songs on his Sound+Vision tour. This gig was the first leg of his return to Europe so found him full of energy and vitality and turning in superb tunes like 'Rebel Rebel', 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Life on Mars'. She was talented spotted in her teenage years by a local music impresario in the town of Shiptown. His name was Noah Biggs and he swept her up and had her in the studio on and off over the course of eight years from 1970. The music she recorded spanned all soul styles and is now collected on this great album My Mind Holds Onto Yesterday. When disco took over as the big new sound by 1978, Strand was no longer called upon by Biggs so this remains her only work.

Review: The Mellophonia label offshoot Fusion Sequence won us over with its well-presented and great-sounding first EP, and now a quick follow-up does the same. This one is another various artists affair that starts with some nice futuristic robot disco from Vanity Project. There is more organic and lush Balearic from Bobby Bricks and Pacific Coliseum follows that spine-tingling Ibiza sunset vibe. On the flip side, there is everything from late-night electronic house to lazy disco via Sorcerer's blissed out 'Just For Love' which would entrance any dance floor. There's as much quality as there is variation on this one, which makes it a useful EP indeed.

Review: Always brimming with partystarting energy, Brooklyn Funk Essentials' motto "funk is what you make it" has carried them for three decades. Coming up in Brooklyn and finding a local fanbase for their electricity on the big smoke's live stage, said electricity later translated to a deluge of full-length LPs showing off the best way to represent funk in the present day. Intuition is their latest album, released by fellow fun-lovers Doraodo. Review: Lo Borges arrived in 1972 as the debut solo album for Brazilian songwriter Lo Borges. He was recording Clube da Esquina with the legendary Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes in the same year and there are plenty of shades of that alaric here. It's a record with lush texture and lots of superbly intricate guitar playing that brings the heat and transports you to a scorched earth world in South America. The vocal arrangements are lush, too, with lots of confounding instrumentals and clever progressions that you will enjoy trying to unpick. Add in melodic brass and jazzy organs and you have a real pearler.

Although born in Sweden, this Bobo is now based in Manchester and this is his debut album on Erbium. It's a work that draws on all forms of electronic sound from bass to dubstep as well as ambient, house and electro. The resulting melting pot is a triumph of both dance floor clout and home listening richness. Review: Raincoats' bassist Gina Birch may have delivered the alternative rock 'n' roll song of the year in 'I Play My Bass Loud', title track on this, her debut album, and the record's opener to boot. There's always something to be said for saving the best for a little into an LP track list, but when you're making such bold and unforgettable statements of intent we also appreciate the need to dive right in. A low slung - and fittingly bass heavy - downtempo plodder that oozes cool, swagger, pithy observations and witticisms, it almost feels out of time with today's world, invoking the stoned end of 1990s garage heroes in all the best ways. From thereon in, it's hard to fault anything here, with songs ranging from the weird, jerky 'I Will Never Wear Stilettos' to the ultra-minimalist experimental offering 'I Am Rage', dub wise 'Digging Down' and tortured soul grit of 'Wish I Was With You'. A phenomenal release you need in your life.

Review: The second album from Carla Oliver's solo ambient project, Badskin, the Aussie underground rock alumni ventures once more into the meditative plains of ambient, creating what can only be described as an album that is truly alive. The air rattling through pipes, the howling wind of the droning synth and the delicate percussion conjure a lone tree creaking back and forth in the night. 'Jourama' and 'Swimmer's Body' have a C418 quality to their evolving forms, though tracks like 'Blackwater' take a dark turn, and 'Critical Path' has a Kabuki theatre element to its screeching woodwind sections. The tone is otherworldly, flipping from comfort to unease at the flip of a switch. Oliver is a master at work.

They managed to write 10 tracks within 24 hours while imagining a film that told a story about two people stuck on the arctic ice cap where one tries to fool the other. Influences from Vangelis, John Carpenter, and Tangerine Dream all feature in what is a superb and escapist listen.

Review: Mel Brown's Chicken Fat album is the latest to get the reissue treatment by the good folks at Verve. The guitarist's 1967 Impulse! debut is said to be one of the funkiest and most original the late ever put out. His signature picking style is clean and bluesy and was honed while he played with legends like John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands. There is also plenty of well swung soul-jazz in the great organ work and for this version the original audio has been transferred from the analog tapes to nice heavy vinyl.

Tracks like the lush 'Pulse' are gloriously airy and spring-like montages while there is a little woozy romance to 'Before It Enters My Mind'.

Review: Max Guiget under his well-established Blundetto guise is one of France's more soulful producers. He dropped a great soundtrack back in February and now returns with the second volume of his superbly emotive dub work. It is infused with all sorts of knowing references from jazz funk and soul to the best of Italian Library music. 'Count Duke' opens with horizontal sounds, 'Mama Genso' is a playful and flute-led jaunt, 'Capuche' has a darker soul to its mellifluous chords and rolling drums and 'West Highland' is the most spaced out of the lot.

NAQI Mixtape follows up an impressive EP released earlier this year. Review: Roy Brooks was a staple of Detroit's jazz scene - a gifted drummer who worked with Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver and more besides. He recorded Beat for Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz label in the Hitsville USA studio, joined by George Bohanon, Hugh Lawson, Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook and Eugene Taylor. Given the interwoven shared history of these players, Beat manifested as a cohesive fusion of hard bop and soul jazz which left a mark when it came out in 1964, and it still packs a punch in the modern era thanks to this high-grade reissue courtesy of Third Man, making this a true Motor City product.

Review: If you weren't already in love with Conor Oberst (with or without Bright Eyes) then this special outing on Dead Oceans is sure to change that tune, perhaps almost as much as the band changed theirs for a good proportion of the tracks on here. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning was the outfit's landmark sixth studio album, unveiled in 2005 on the same day as their seventh LP, Digital Ash In A Digital Urn (how's that for confidence?) and is also available in a new issue today.
Sticking with what is essentially a side note on the era that birthed those records-proper, here Bright Eyes go all out on reworking Digital Ash tracks, retaining the sweetness of the first incarnations, but adding a sense of mayhem, chaos, and outright deviance to the score. Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. Review: A decade after Blockhead dropped his seminal Interludes After Midnight album it gets a deserving reissue on Ninja Tune. Blockhead is of course an alias of the revered New York producer Tony Simon who is reissuing all his albums at the moment. This one set a blueprint for the broken beat and nu jazz scene, with elements of trip hop and downtempo also colouring the grooves. Some tunes like 'Never Forget Your Token' have a Latin feel thanks to the keys and breaks, others are more psyched out late night store jams like 'Hungover Like Woah.' All are great.
