In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
Zoetrope
Review: When it comes to a reissue such as this it can't be understated just how arresting the work of Boards of Canada can be in the right situation. This EP, that came to light in between Music Has The Right To Children and Geogaddi, represents the enigmatic duo at their most powerful, channeling their energy into four long-form tracks that draw on all of their combined strengths. "Kid For Today" is haunting and dark but utterly heartbreaking, whilst "Amo Bishop Roden" heads into more mysterious territory. "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country" is eerie in its titular invitation to join a cult, and "Zoetrope" tips its hat to Terry Riley et al in its looping phrases, but really there's no describing the magnificence of these gems, pleasingly reissued on vinyl to beat the Discogs chancers.

Review: This was where it all started, not only for arguably the most important feminist rock band of all time, but for an entire musical movement. Originally released on cassette in 1991, Revolution Girl Style Now was an incendiary squall of furious ire, set aflame by DIY spirit, rulebook-shredding rage and Kathleen Hanna's fearsomely magnetic charisma alike. To this end, this collection of mighty calls to arms has stubbornly refused to date, standing proud as more than an essential Riot Grrrl document, rather a thrilling and timeless testimony to the power of punk rock at its most righteous.

Review: Erased Tapes, London's purveyors of the new garde in ambient music, take on one of the legends in revered Oregon folk experimentalist Peter Broderick. On the Partners LP, he starts out with the spoken word poetry of the title track, then the sombre piano piece "In A Landscape", complete with eerie tape hiss lurking in the background. Other highlights include the emotional and bittersweet "Carried" and the awe inspiring closing track "Sometimes" where Broderick's vocals come gloriously come into the fold, on a price which is truly captivating and special.

Review: No longer simply the nearly-man egomaniac chronicled in the movie Dig, Anton Newcombe is now viewed with the kind of reverence he probably always felt he deserved, a modern master of classic psychedelia with a glint in his eye, having carved out a trademark sound that transcends retro trappings by its constantly questing and adventurous nature. The Spacemen 3-referencing sleeve of this new effort - his third work in the last two years and 15th BJM album in total - somewhat belies a sound that could come from no other maverick, its widescreen sweep locking horns with synapse-shredding experimentation.

Review: Any new release from reclusive Norwegian ambient colossus Geir Jennsen is cause for celebration. The Petrified Forest was inspired by a 1936 movie of the same name, the plot of which revolves around a world-weary British writer meeting a fellow idealist in an isolated diner in the middle of the Arizona desert. Jenssen's music has always been cinematic in tone - think widescreen visions with multiple related movements, sitting somewhere between icy loneliness and comforting homeliness - so it's little surprise to find that The Petrified Forest regularly hits the mark. Evocative, atmospheric and quietly melodiousness, it's a mini album chock full of brilliant downtempo electronica.

Review: Bcee hits album number four and we have many people to thank for... The result of a crowd-funding mission (in order to save label funds for his artists), this was made under more pressure and motivation than any of his previous LPs put together. And you can really feel this energy and focus from the opening salvo of vocal soul cuts "Surfacing" and "Little Bird". Much deeper into the document we dive for the densely textured jazz flurries of "Had It All" (with Logistics), soulful song strength of the Riya-fronted title track and much darker sounds such as the knee-sweeping "Dead Reckoning" and the piano-slapping jungle homage "Keep Moving On". And these are just a small handful of highlights. Bcee has yet to deliver a bad album but this takes his repertoire, energy and sense of focus to a whole new level.

Review: Together under the starry skies of the 70s, Arnaud Rodrigues and Chico Anysio made some of the most incredible music of that decade, under the name of Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos. Their legendary debut LP from 1974, under their own name, has become a Brazilian funk addict's must-have, not to mention a Holy Grail for contemporary sampling. Until now, it's been difficult to get a hold of it on viny format, so we're super psyched that the irresistibly reliable Far Out label has decided to reissue it. With 11 tracks to marvel at, there is a slice of funk for all walks of life and, of course, there is so much grooving to done! Quite simply, this is feel-good music for feel-good people, and this duo's vibes are just about the best thing we could ask on this June morning. Cop it before it's too late - we wouldn't want you to suffer at the hands of the online sharks, now!

Review: Baby Buddha is the experimental new wave duo of Charles Hornaday (vocals, guitar, electronics, drums) and David Javelosa (vocals, electronics, clarinet). Born from late night improvisations of San Francisco synth-punks Los Microwaves with a rotating cast of musicians. Live shows would include music, projections, dance and performance art in both clubs and gallery spaces. In 1980, Howie Klein's 415 Records released their first single of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man". In 1981, 'Music For Teenage Sex' was their first full length album released via Poshboy Records. It featured Los Microwaves' Meg Brazill, Poshboy boss Robbie Fields, and Kathy Peck as "Tammy Why-not", who later went on to found H.E.A.R (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers). In January 1983 Kathy, Charles and David went into the studio with a couple of Kathy's original "country" songs and began working on a sophomore album. They also incorporated songs from a live multi-track recording of a concert at the Graffiti Club on June 6th 1984. The album titled 'Everyone Is My Age' sat unreleased until 1987 due to relocation to Los Angeles and eventually found a home on David's Hyperspace Communications, the original label for the first Los Microwaves singles. For this first time reissue we've added a previously unreleased bonus song "What's Going On," a Kathy Peck original. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in the original jacket featuring a collage by David Javelosa and includes an insert with lyrics, photos and liner notes.

Review: Don't believe everything you read - the fifth Bat For Lashes album confirms this girl (or woman) found herself musically and thematically some time ago, freeing up creative energy to explore new approaches to deliver her often mournful, always heartfelt songs inspired by personal crises and private longings. On this outing there's more than a hint of 1980s pop evident in the mix. Shades of Prince ("Feel For You"), Madonna ("So Good"), Bowie's Berlin days and electro-era Gary Numan (the stunning, infectious instrumental "Vampires") cast the record in a nostalgia that suits the sense of yearning that always seems to pervade Natasha Khan's work. Simply name-checking reference points is lazy and unfair, though. This is an incredible collection of tracks moulded in the artist's own image - bold, beautiful and instantly captivating. Then again, it would be surprising if anyone had expected anything less.

Review: If you're even close to 35-years-old, the initialisation "MTV" and the word "Unplugged" likely conjures images of peak-hype Nirvana, arguably the most defining and revered of all this format's many moments. Nevertheless, Courtney Barnett's electric-free contribution to the series, recorded live in Melbourne, may well be the best conceived in the episodic series. Rather than going down the usual "Unplugged" route - hits, covers of classics and a few from the new album, sans power chords, - Barnett confirms what those paying close attention have always known to be true. Yes, she's an inspiring and inspired artist, as work like "Nameless, Faceless" shows (here turned into a duet even more resonant and chilling than the original). But she's also a community leader, a gifted collaborator who has nurtured peers - and with half this album reimagining others, she's clearly still determined to let them shine.

Review: Legendary producer Black Devil Disco Club aka French composer Bernard Fevre is back for one final album that completes one of music's most strange and enigmatic discographies. His early work like 1977's debut record was often mistaken for the work of Aphex Twin as it was so experimental and ahead of his time. 2006 album 28 After on this label disproved that theory though and now this latest offering is another spellbinding collision of styles form wave to EBM, disco to experimental electronics. A weird and wonderful ride deep into the musical psyche of a truly maverick artist, it is another timeless work that serves as a fine tribute to his past 40 years of subverting expectation.

Review: The Ninja Tune renaissance has been underway for around a decade now, with the UK imprint, founded by Coldcut way back when, firmly cementing its status in the techno, rave and future bass world post-millennia. So good is the heavier end of the stable output we really needed Julianna Barwick to come along and remind us of the imprint's more delicate moods. Known for her deep compositions that look to celebrate, explore and consider the human voice in its many facets, 'Healing Is A Miracle' is a perfect calling card for the artist in question. Utilising a spine-tingling vocal range, and taking us directly into worlds where sound itself is a form of art, not just when arranged, the record was apparently born from an improvisation session on her looping equipment, which in turn directs the construction of the individual tracks. The serene but complex, minimal but layered and heavily textured work of a synth siren.

Review: Those with a penchant for Latin disco pop will be in their element here, with the debut album from angel-faced Chilean-Norwegian falsetto Boy Pablo serving up a particularly generous helping with its title track. Accompanied by a worth-checking-out video helping tell its semi-autobiographical take of a young kid falling in love and playing football, it's enough to make some swoon.

Similarly slick, but heavier on the synths, 'I Hope She Loves Me Back' should make it clear that the overall theme here as anything amorous, wistful and smooth, with guitar licks and playful beats ensuring the artist is walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Which, at times, is more cocky than bashful - "Hey girl, do you like me? I guess that's a stupid ass question." Enough said.

Originally recorded in 1975 and produced by, who else, the great Lee 'Scratch' Perry, it rides through plenty of lovestruck laments, more upbeat and rump wiggling gems like 'I Am I Said' and slower, more heartfelt and tender tracks like 'Let Love Touch Us No.' Versatile and vital throughout, this is a richly rewarding reggae record from one of the greats.

Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. There is more energy to the busted beats and hidden vocal sounds of Celestial Crusade (E-Saggila remix) and plenty more greatness through the other tracks.

Dialogues is an accomplished artistic statement filled with virtuosos musicianship, vibrant drums and jazz chords that brim with life. The grooves are all rooted in jazz with elements of the rootsy blues and ragtime of his youth, cool 60s modernism and 70s funk fusions. Magical and mystifying in equal measure, this an immediately timeless record from a contemporary great.

Each tune is a luxuriant fusion of tight drumming and splashy symbols, glowing melodies and rousing grooves that work as well in headphones, on the car stereo or in the club. Some mad playing skills are on show from the band and the dynamics within each track, and across the album as a whole, are unreal. This is up there with some of the best albums of the year for our money.

His solo project B. Ashra has existed since 1993 as a live act, DJ, composer, sound designer and mastering engineer. He's been known to delve into ambient, experimental, soundscapes, trance and techno, as well as deep house and electronic jazz. Much of the aforementioned is explored on the Eyes In The Sky EP: from the deep 303 swing of 'Space Rock', the chill downtempo electronica of 'Give Me Contact', to the heady acid house of 'The End Of Rain' and the hypnotic techno of 'Sputnik'.

Bonobo is set to put forth yet another album from his own personal ether; 'Fragments' was born from actual sonic 'fragments' that were later repurposed into twelve full 'sonic affirmations'. A later escape into the wilds of California's deserts formed the bulk of this album's downtempo magnum opi; watch out for collabs with a foray of world-downtempo electronica acts including Jamila Woods, O'Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Review: Byron Lee was an important part of Jamaican music from his first appearance in the 60s and onwards. Amongst his bustling back catalogue is this cheery classic from 1980, which keeps the heart and soul of ska alive, with an emphasis on the soul. The rhythms are reliably skanking throughout, whether stopping by the melancholic 'Shoobe Doobe Doo' or the chirpy 'Bend Down Low'. This is ska in its truest sense, with an infectious energy which speaks universally to young and old, hip and square. You can also hear the strong US RnB roots of the music in Lee's songwriting, and it tugs at the heart strings in just the same way. Grab an immaculate album of honest, earnest songwriting magic with all the irrepressible joy of Jamaica coursing through its veins.

Review: Tshona from Pat Matshikiza, Basil Mannenberg Coetzee and Kippie Moeketsi is one of the many celebrated jazz albums to have come from South Africa. Canadian Eric Warner's Wearebusybodies label has the rights to this latest reissue of it after the last one sold out and became nearly as costly as an original. It is a joyous affair with light, airy gores, keys and drums on the title tune, and something of a reggae swagger to 'Stop & Start' with its more conversational wind leads. 'Umgababa' is another blissed out and laidback summer soundtrack and 'Kippie's Prayer' end with a nice upbeat feel.

Review: The Black Keys are back with more of that raw, bluesy-soaked rawk they do so well. The duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney wrote this new album in the studio, laying down initial ideas in Nashville before expanding the sessions to include collaborators such as Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright and Angelo Petraglia. Everything you love about the 'Keys is right here, and lead single 'Wild Child' has all the hooks and ear-snagging chorus lines you could wish for, with that dirty, overdriven guitar sound that has been their calling card since they first broke through 20 years ago.

His albums are in constant high demand and always getting reissued. This one, Samba Esquema Novo, is one of the best and not least because it is opened up by the legendary 'Mas, Que Nada' which will immediately bring sunshine to any setting. The other tunes are just as vibrant with his elastic vocals, delicate guitar work and generally good time vibes.

Review: A band that should need no introduction yet arguably never received the level of success or praise they deserved, is The Blood.

These London punk provocateurs melted down the rulebook in a bonfire on their classic 1983 debut, 'False Gestures For A Devious Public.' Smashing Oi punk, shock rock and even overtly proficient metal leaning guitar solos together in anthemic, moshing, fist-pumping fashion yet sporting major musical ingenuity shrouded beneath the smarmy veneer.

The genre-hopping abandon of opener, 'Done Some Brain Cells Last Nite' to the proto-post-punk airy backing vocals of 'Degenerate' all the way to the French iconoclastic gangster Jacques Mesrine tribute - 'Mesrine', showcase a level of intelligence and wit only made possible by the all too dynamic lightning in a bottle pairing of the self-proclaimed punk secularist Cardinal Jesus Hate and JJ Bedsore.

It's essentially a cover/updated version of ESP's track of the same name, but this 1989 version is tougher, heavier and deeper with a variety of mixes - the New York-London, acid-infused Free House and drum heavy NU Style Mix - all designed to rock big sound systems.

Bravo (Adam Mori) saw the release of his first album 'Paradise'. 2022 is the year the genre should make a comeback, after just five years. If such were to be the case, Bravo's second album 'Vizionz' would be the catalyst. Charting collaborations with rapper Def Sound and singer Sally Green, this one points towards only the best detuned sonics, synth bass licks and Miami heat-hazed vizionz.

Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

Kiko Navarro, Kaidi Tatham, Blair Frech, Ezel, Cee ElAssaad, Chris Coco and John Beltram with John Arnold all line up to do their duty, incorporating the sun kissed, percussion-heavy and exotically instrumented vibes into their more house and techno productions. Highlights include Cee ElAssaad's remix of 'Get Away', its gloriously optimistic vocal retained and re-purposed over light and nimble beats, and Chris Coco's dubby slow motion samba take on 'Linda Sau Paulo', but like the label says, it's All Good

He recorded Beat for Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz label in the Hitsville USA studio, joined by George Bohanon, Hugh Lawson, Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook and Eugene Taylor. Given the interwoven shared history of these players, Beat manifested as a cohesive fusion of hard bop and soul jazz which left a mark when it came out in 1964, and it still packs a punch in the modern era thanks to this high-grade reissue courtesy of Third Man, making this a true Motor City product.

Review: If you weren't already in love with Conor Oberst (with or without Bright Eyes) then this special outing on Dead Oceans is sure to change that tune, perhaps almost as much as the band changed theirs for a good proportion of the tracks on here. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning was the outfit's landmark sixth studio album, unveiled in 2005 on the same day as their seventh LP, Digital Ash In A Digital Urn (how's that for confidence?) and is also available in a new issue today.
Sticking with what is essentially a side note on the era that birthed those records-proper, here Bright Eyes go all out on reworking Digital Ash tracks, retaining the sweetness of the first incarnations, but adding a sense of mayhem, chaos, and outright deviance to the score. The result is folk, boozy, woozy, and heady stuff. A little like walking into a bar on a cold winter's night to find familiar friends in full song.

NAQI Mixtape follows up an impressive EP released earlier this year. With tracks like 'No Way' and 'Rise' occupying the space between Latin guitar and dancehall, while bringing an extra dreamy element (like a divine blessing from Khruangbin), it's clear that Brown is more than deserving of his indifferent looks and cool demeanour. He's earnt it.

The artist who is also known for his work in Passion Dance Orchestra and as Laurentius is a master of super cool jazz and laid-back lounge electronics that have hints of 80s nostalgia without being too slavish. The guitarist's 1967 Impulse! debut is said to be one of the funkiest and most original the late ever put out. His signature picking style is clean and bluesy and was honed while he played with legends like John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands. There is also plenty of well swung soul-jazz in the great organ work and for this version the original audio has been transferred from the analog tapes to nice heavy vinyl.

It is one steeped in beautiful melancholy with narrative themes and a beautiful back-lit cosmic glow that makes it seem all the more otherworldly. The delicate synth craft defines the entire selection of tracks and brings thoughtfulness and tenderness to a range of rhythms and tempos. This new compendium, 'Firebird', charts the DJ and producer's latest sonic explorations, blurring the boundaries between every influence from contemporary jazz, UK electronic dance, and Latin dance styles from bossa nova to salsa. It also contains several examples of what is known as his 'East Coast' sound, which pays homage to the fusion of jazz and funk and which spread throughout UK nightclubs as far back as the early 80s.

They managed to write 10 tracks within 24 hours while imagining a film that told a story about two people stuck on the arctic ice cap where one tries to fool the other. Influences from Vangelis, John Carpenter, and Tangerine Dream all feature in what is a superb and escapist listen.

Review: The second album from Carla Oliver's solo ambient project, Badskin, the Aussie underground rock alumni ventures once more into the meditative plains of ambient, creating what can only be described as an album that is truly alive. The air rattling through pipes, the howling wind of the droning synth and the delicate percussion conjure a lone tree creaking back and forth in the night. 'Jourama' and 'Swimmer's Body' have a C418 quality to their evolving forms, though tracks like 'Blackwater' take a dark turn, and 'Critical Path' has a Kabuki theatre element to its screeching woodwind sections. The tone is otherworldly, flipping from comfort to unease at the flip of a switch. Oliver is a master at work.

Review: Bobo is Mr. Burns's beloved teddy bear but it is unlikely that the same bear is also a dab hand at crafting weighty bass music. Although born in Sweden, this Bobo is now based in Manchester and this is his debut album on Erbium. It's a work that draws on all forms of electronic sound from bass to dubstep as well as ambient, house and electro. The resulting melting pot is a triumph of both dance floor clout and home listening richness. 'Beyond This Realm' is tinged with old school rave energy, 'Rebellion' is eerie and empty bass music and 'Nowhere' is a deep jungle excursion with cuddly bass pillows.

It is their first new release since their hugely successful and widely acclaimed 2020 album The Kingdom and it has a punchy, uptempo swing to it that finds them in top form. Plenty of tunes retain the band's signature moodiness with infectious hooks and big riffs detailing each of the tracks. 'Kiss Me I'm Dead' is a real standout with its heavy guitar jabs and strained vocals well as an epic chorus.

It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.
