Review: Amnesia Scanner, the duo made up of Martti Kalliala and Ville Haimala, have quickly established themselves as important artists operating in the field of experimental electronic music, with a distinct focus towards noise, sound collage and abrasive synthesis. After last year's "Another Life", they return to Pan in collaboration with label boss Bill Kouligas, resulting in the startling, challenging and compelling "Lexachast". It's an album that veers in mood from track to track - at times intimate and furtive, other times bold and aggressive. There are whispers of beats thrown tauntingly to the edge of the mix, while elsewhere acoustic sound sources strain to be heard, but the focus is really on jagged shards of processed sound. It's a powerful, unapologetic listen from artists and a label proudly stabbing into unknown sonic territory.

Review: Mulatu Astatke is a legendary musician who is famous for his signature playing on the vibraphone. Here he blends his Ethio-jazz sounds with the Melbourne-based group Black Jesus Experience to serve up a mix of re-interpreted African folk songs and odes to his homeland. 'To Know Without Knowing' has a decidedly hip hop edge thanks to the vocal flow and 'Mascaram Setaba' is an Ethio classic. Another highlight is 'Living On Stolen Land' which is dedicated to the First Nations people of Australia and acknowledges the pain and injustice of them not being recognised as the traditional owners of Australia.

Review: Next up on Outer Place Records is the fifth installment coming from the vault of Meister Bert Ashra, a veteran from Berlin's '90s underground scene who is still active in the city today. His solo project B. Ashra has existed since 1993 as a live act, DJ, composer, sound designer and mastering engineer. He's been known to delve into ambient, experimental, soundscapes, trance and techno, as well as deep house and electronic jazz. Much of the aforementioned is explored on the Eyes In The Sky EP: from the deep 303 swing of 'Space Rock', the chill downtempo electronica of 'Give Me Contact', to the heady acid house of 'The End Of Rain' and the hypnotic techno of 'Sputnik'.

Review: Taking inspiration from the sonic lawlessness of the city they live, New York's B Boys deliver a third studio album for Brooklyn indie Captured Tracks. Described as exploring solitude and self-reflection through sharp, high-energy shouts and melodic mediations, Dudu keeps their post punk sound of lo-fi drums, jangley, distorted guitars and quick fire rhythms fresh! The music of B Boys shares a close proximity to what was coming out of the UK scene during the 2000s with "Closer", "Instant Pace" and "Another Anthem" really saddling up to this aesthetic, which should bring some nice memories to fans of bands like King Krule, The Rakes or even At The Drive In.

Review: We've been steadily teased by Bastard Jazz with a slow flow of singles but the time has come to reveal B Bravo's whole debut album... And he hasn't disappointed. A supreme cosmic boogie experience throughout, Bravo flexes around the funk/house/hip-hop axis with sunshine synths, loose swinging drums, heavyweight talkbox action and oodles of funk and timely displays of sensitivity. Highlights that really showcase the soul spectrum B Bravo explores range from the Chromeo-style party jam "I'm For Real" to the horn-hazed tinkling "LA Nights" to the dreamy west coast house struts and wriggles of "Summer Love". Sure fire summer silver lining.

Review: 2017 was the year that electronic wonk-funk saw its heyday, and uncoincidentally, it was also the year that B. Bravo (Adam Mori) saw the release of his first album 'Paradise'. 2022 is the year the genre should make a comeback, after just five years. If such were to be the case, Bravo's second album 'Vizionz' would be the catalyst. Charting collaborations with rapper Def Sound and singer Sally Green, this one points towards only the best detuned sonics, synth bass licks and Miami heat-hazed vizionz.

Review: Some seven years after first appearing on Sthlmaudio, Baaz delivers a debut album on his own Office Recordings imprint that fully sheds light on his immersive sound. There are some ambient moments such as spellbinding opener "Everyone", while the likes of "Endori" bring heavy loaded grooves into a mellow, contemplative context. At every turn the production is impeccable, the beats hooky, the atmospheres captivating. It's a fine achievement of a debut album from a producer that has long been delivering the goods for labels such as Quintessentials and Minuendo, bringing a healthy spread of intensities to bear on the ten tracks contained within. Whether you want it mellow or pumping, there's something to latch on in here.

'Prince' Billy, who also plays on the album, along with Andrew WK, Robbie Lee, Max Moston, William Breeze, John Contreras, James Lo and Liz Kessel, all of whom bring extra fullness to Dee's old-world pop sensibilities. This is such a great album, filled with deeply moving songs and sharply produced in vivid images.

Funk
Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer sleeve corners creased, product unopened & in working order***

German funkateer Bjorn Wagner launched the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band in 2007 following months spent learning to play steel drums during an extended stay in Trinidad and Tobago. 11 years on, Wagner and his trusty backing band return with album number two, "The Serpent's Mouth". As usual, the set sees them gleefully combine killer grooves - a mix-and-match fusion of funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz-funk - with a hint of humid tropical music and the distinctive melodies of oil barrel steel drums. There are, of course, nods to reggae and calypso (see "Real Hot") and a few eyebrow-raising cover versions, of which their rendition of Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme" from "Miami Vice" stands out.

Review: Burt Bacharach's legendary career as a composer is celebrated with Essential Burt Bacharach, collecting 20 of his most essential songs. Performed by a variety of artists, the album has been described as an exercise in the uncanny, opening up vaults of memory that occupy the same historic place as "nursery rhymes and Beatles songs", albeit with less identifiability. That all changes here, with the album showcasing Bacharach's incredible talent for composing quick-spreading, earworming hooks, which tend to spread through the public consciousness faster than pandemics.

Review: Before Twin Peaks and all that followed, director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti had worked together just once: on the former's 1986 mystery noir movie Blue Velvet. Lynch asked Badalamenti to create an original score inspired by both the works of Shostakovich and the smoky, clandestine atmosphere found at blues and jazz clubs. These two musical threads are explored on side A and B respectively. So, while the first side contains numerous sweeping, dark and moody orchestral compositions, turn the record over and you'll find classics from Roy Orbison and Bill Doggett, as well as Badalamenti's spine-tingling interpretation of pop standard "Blue Velvet". Featuring a mixture of simmering strings, breathy female vocals and atmospheric field recordings, it's as creepy a version of the much-covered song as you'll hear.

Review: Badly Drawn Boy returns with his 5th studio album, "Born In The UK", on October 16th. It's his first album in 2 years but is also his best to date. The first track to be heard from the album was the title track which was released on a very limited edition 7" and was playlisted at XFM and 6Music and played by the Blue Room at Radio 1. There were also great write ups in NME, Time Out and Metro among others. The first proper single from the album is one of the best songs Damon's ever written - "Nothing's Gonna Change Your Mind" comes out on October 9th, 1 week before the album which is co-produced by Nick Franglen, one half of animated sampledelic organo-dance maestros Lemon Jelly. The album will be released on CD, deluxe CD and vinyl (single/heavyweight/gatefold).

Review: The second album from Carla Oliver's solo ambient project, Badskin, the Aussie underground rock alumni ventures once more into the meditative plains of ambient, creating what can only be described as an album that is truly alive. The air rattling through pipes, the howling wind of the droning synth and the delicate percussion conjure a lone tree creaking back and forth in the night. 'Jourama' and 'Swimmer's Body' have a C418 quality to their evolving forms, though tracks like 'Blackwater' take a dark turn, and 'Critical Path' has a Kabuki theatre element to its screeching woodwind sections. The tone is otherworldly, flipping from comfort to unease at the flip of a switch. Oliver is a master at work.

Review: Music For Dreams label head Kenneth Badger was so inspired by the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to the classic Michael Mann film The Thief that he and Tolga Bo0.95yu0.95k from the Turkish band islandman decided to write their own soundtrack to an imaginary movie. They managed to write 10 tracks within 24 hours while imagining a film that told a story about two people stuck on the arctic ice cap where one tries to fool the other. Influences from Vangelis, John Carpenter, and Tangerine Dream all feature in what is a superb and escapist listen.

The Danish DJ/producer is famed for the quality of his selections, a facet that makes his occasional compilations essential listening. There's naturally plenty to admire on Balearic Biscuits Volume 2, from the sped-up African insanity of Bufiman's "Bassdrum Party", and Mehmet Aslan's fine rework of Kaprov Not Kaprov's "Mechanical Turk" (think Arabic synth melodies and rolling grooves), to the loved-up, hands-in the air brilliance of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Deo", and Grooveman Spot's low-slung "Fork Power".

As with the previous compendiums, the focus is squared purely on sonic equivalent of those idyllic balmy, hazy marmalade hues we long for during the colder months. Assuaging us from day to night, or simply straight to bed, real stand-out jams include Line Gottsche's sultry purrs on "Eyes",Christer Nahrendorf's sleazy jazz breaks on "Sju Minter Kvar" and the soft house thumps of Tuccinelli's "Can Picard" but that's really just the tip of the golden brown vista... It is one steeped in beautiful melancholy with narrative themes and a beautiful back-lit cosmic glow that makes it seem all the more otherworldly. The delicate synth craft defines the entire selection of tracks and brings thoughtfulness and tenderness to a range of rhythms and tempos. In keeping with the original spirit, the full soul range is explored but done so with a much firmer focus on the dancefloor; ZouZouElectric's dubby house glimmers on "Tropicana Flight", Opolopo's sweet shuffled jack on "Dizzy's Bounce" and Suonho's sultry piano-primed disco are just three of the nine awesome sunkissed twists crammed onto the 180 gram vinyl. Review: Together under the starry skies of the 70s, Arnaud Rodrigues and Chico Anysio made some of the most incredible music of that decade, under the name of Baiano & Os Novos Caetanos. Their legendary debut LP from 1974, under their own name, has become a Brazilian funk addict's must-have, not to mention a Holy Grail for contemporary sampling. Until now, it's been difficult to get a hold of it on viny format, so we're super psyched that the irresistibly reliable Far Out label has decided to reissue it. With 11 tracks to marvel at, there is a slice of funk for all walks of life and, of course, there is so much grooving to done! Quite simply, this is feel-good music for feel-good people, and this duo's vibes are just about the best thing we could ask on this June morning. Cop it before it's too late - we wouldn't want you to suffer at the hands of the online sharks, now!

Review: We're big fans of London vocalist Liam Bailey here at Juno HQ. He's turned out some timeless 7"s in the last few years and so this full length work is long overdue. Ekundayo translates from the West African Yoruba dialect as 'sorrow becomes joy' which is a perfect sentiment for the qualities of his own voice. Form experimental sounding openers to classic reggae via roots material, downtempo lullabies and fresh and contemporary R&B, it covers a wide range but is all tied together by his buttery smooth vocals. The record was recorded with long time mentor Leon Michels.

Review: Bait E Borghi's reputation for solid darkroom dancing material isn't going anywhere given this latest stab at crafting big atmosphere from relatively stripped back ingredients. They roll, chug, build and drive a way down futurist progressive house-techno-post punk avenues, hypnotic and heavy, like the sound of a few hundred heads masked in the blue hues of stage lights. Or at least that's a running thought amid the deep moodiness of 'Entri', and when embracing the warm bounce cushioning 'North''s monstrous thud. As 'Lapena' shows, though, there's far more than that going on here. A druggy rock epic, it makes the closing space dub of 'Fa Freddo La Sera' and the King of Woolworths-esque, espionage theme-worthy downtempo spatiality of 'Cacciatore Di Prestigio' make perfect sense. In short, a treat for electronic punks everywhere.

The sort of artist whose bandmates and peers have observed distributing gig riders among local homeless people. A musician who isn't afraid to not only put it all out for us to see, but swing the spotlight round to fully focus on and analyse herself, in public.

That's certainly the overriding feeling you get from Little Oblivions, her latest long form outing. Themes of guilt, elusive redemption, personal inconsistencies and failings are constant, as if we're being asked if we can tolerate these traits and behaviours before signing up to the fan club. Musically, it's just as memorable, Baker - largely known for her pared back approach to country-infused indie folk rock - has put everything into this, switching gears to focus on louder, larger, more complicated arrangements, and pulling it off with aplomb.

Review: Leeds' Simon Baker drops his debut full-length. As you'd perhaps expect, Traces doffs its cap to Baker's usual influences - electrofunk, old skool electro, nu-disco, acid house and classic Chicago house - within a straightforward deep house framework. It's a formula that makes for engaging and entertaining listening. There are two bubbly vocal work-outs featuring the oh-so-soulful Debukas, plenty of choice piano moments (the lovely "Someone Like" stands out), some serious peaktime tech-house pressure ("Blue Lights") and a sprinkling of classic deep house ("Traces"). A quietly impressive debut from the Baker man.

Review: Gacha Bakradze is back on the Barcelona based Lapsus Music label with a second outing in the form of his new album 'Obscure Languages.' Hailing from Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Bakradze is one of his homeland's most famous dance music exports and this album shows why. It is an album of techno that explores the outer edges of our universe with cinematic soundscapes and tiny little sonic details. IDM, electro and breakbeats all colour the rhythms and the ambient synths are things or real beauty that cannot but captivate your mind's eye. Avant-garde yet relatable, this is a high class outing.

Review: Tri Angle return with more atmospheric headphone clobber from an unknown quantity. Once again hip-hop and dubstep rhythms provide a diving board off which the emotive tendencies of the artist can spin, weave and flutter. Opening track "Welcome" is anything but a warm greeting, with its ominous tones in suspended animation, but it does make for one of the most engaging parts of the album. There are some captivating songs elsewhere - well worth checking out. The entire release is a pleasant trip through rich, melodic territories with some pleasantly surprising moments.

Review: For a man whose legendary status has long been assured - he was, after all, the original cosmic disco DJ - it would be fair to say that Daniele Baldelli's production record is patchy, at best. It's heartening to report, then, that Cosmic Drag, his first solo full-length since 2009, is arguably his strongest release to date. Typically trippy and blessed with both psychedelic electronics, and vintage analogue synthesizers, it joins the dots between experimental Italian synth-wave, chugging electronic disco, yearning drum machine funk, glassy-eyed soundscapes and pitched-down disco-funk, all the while sounding like it could have been recorded in the DJ's late '70s and early '80s heyday.

Review: Having teased the jazz fraternity with a cheeky 7" earlier on this year, Andrea assuages our ears with this super smooth full lengther. Pristinely polished and produced with a big band feeling, there's a distinct Rat Pack feeling as we stride confidently through big choruses and sassy sambas ("I Will Never Stop Loving You") before diving headfirst into mournful smoky saxophone and piano laments ("The Meaning Of Love"). A common face performing on the French Riviera, hopefully this should take Balducci to the broader audience he deserves...

It is, they say, "the product of a magma of influences, the emanation of large decade of music infused lives." It is also a deeply absorbing musical landscape with cosmic overtones, spiritual moods and elements of everything from kraut to dub to disco, funk and more. A rich array of instruments and percussion join the retro-future synth work to make each track busy and compelling, fresh and unique. It's an escapist and therapeutic listen that works both in the club, at home, in the car or on the beach.

Review: Hamish Balfour's singular take on jazz funk, soul and electronic music is a bridge between the classic sounds of Blue Note and the contemporary stylings of Sonar Kollektiv or Warp. He is a piano player, composer, producer and drummer who really excels on this debut album on Rhythm Records and is rightfully drawing plenty of plaudits. All his many influences are explored over the seven pieces here with guest vocalists such as Lyric L, Hospital Records' star Elsa Esmeralda and house mainstay Andre Espeut. From mid-tempo boogie to sultry jazz, deep fusion cuts to eastern-inspired soundscapes this is a record as broad as it is brilliant.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

BeachFreaks Records co-founder Charles Bals is a man who knows about records - and obscure European ones at that. Club Meduse, his first compilation for Spacetalk (a label with a track record for producing these kinds of killer, crate-digging comps), is loosely designed as the soundtrack to life around a mythical (IE imaginary) Cote D'Azure resort. Musically, it gathers together the kind of hazy, soft-focus and life-affirming cuts that you would have heard at resort discos in the mid-to-late 1980s. Suffice to say that Bals' selections tend towards the rare, magical and undeniably Balearic, from the glassy-eyed, cascading jazz-funk of the Keyboys and loved-up post-boogie sweetness of Gemini's "Take a Chance", to the sparkling Euro-electro of Miss' "Hip Hop" and pitched-down drum machine chug of Gigi Flag's "Nymphomaniac (Instrumental)". Essential.

Review: Blistering freshness from Sisso Studio, Tanzania; Poaa marks the start of a series of LPs from the Dar Es Salaam HQ all based around the vital emergence of hyper dance. This one comes from scene leading light Bamba Pana and hits with a heavy, insistent, hypnotic energetic fusion of electronic elements and traditional Tanzanian styles that's not dissimilar to the work of Nkisi or the emergent Shangaan Electro. Unabashed, raw and physical, sensations range from the double time hardcore style "Biti Three" to the sudden highlife twists on "Baria" via the bleep insanity of "Kusini". Singular.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for German combo Bambi Davidson, whose last full-length - the lo-fi rock oddity El Faco - dropped some 15 years ago. After a decade and a half of improvisational live performances, they return with an expanded line-up and a really rather good sophomore set for Mudd's Claremont 56 imprint. Whereas their early work was stripped-back and to the point, Brunswick is packed with undulating, expansive grooves, gentle, sun-kissed melodies, lilting pedal steel and woozy, dub-influenced production. Tracks don't so much come and go, but meander attractively, offering Balearic mood pieces that doff a cap to krautrock and dub disco. It's an impressive set, all told, and one that will appeal to Claremont 56's growing fan base.

Seemingly broader and brighter in sound and energy, the development in sound reflects their move to bigger arenas with big vital poppy moments such as the triumphant opener "Lit Up" and the anthemic riff heavy "War Story". Elsewhere we're body slammed in northern soul stampedes such as "Salvage Rites", we get woozy with a little rock sleaze ("Pony Up") and breath-taking by raw soul authenticity ("You Should've Been Mine"). Here's to another 18 years and eight albums.

Review: Southampton's own bones brigade, Band Of Skulls, return with an epic fifth studio album, delivering a sweet selection of alternative pop rock versatility. The album opens with a salvo of heavier, more motley rock sounds before hitting its catchy title track halfway through the A-side. "Not The Kind Of Nothing" and "Cool Your Battles" turns out the A-side from anything too soft, with the band serving up a cooing, more contemplative and ethereal number in "Sound of You" that opens the second disc. The slightest of country and folk inspirations waver in and out of "We're Alive", with the emotional wall of sound that is "Speed Of Light" a true highlight, alongside the jamming post-punk hit: "Gold". Like James Murphy dressed up as Nikki Sixx.

This new compendium, 'Firebird', charts the DJ and producer's latest sonic explorations, blurring the boundaries between every influence from contemporary jazz, UK electronic dance, and Latin dance styles from bossa nova to salsa. It also contains several examples of what is known as his 'East Coast' sound, which pays homage to the fusion of jazz and funk and which spread throughout UK nightclubs as far back as the early 80s.

Review: By now Banner Pilot have cemented themselves as a pillar of the ever-swelling Midwest punk scene and continue to reinforce that claim with each subsequent release. 2011's "Heart Beats Pacific" elevated Banner Pilot from a band that was notably influenced by the likes of Dillinger Four, Alkaline Trio, and Screeching Weasel, to a band with such a trademark sound and style that they were the ones doing the influencing. Their latest full-length "Souvenir" only serves to strengthen their legend. On every track the gritty vocals urgently belt out poetically penned lyrics over the top of edgy up-tempo guitars and sprawling bass lines. Pairing instantly catchy melodies with aggressive and smart instrumentation, "Souvenir" finds a way to be equally comforting and invigorating.

In true synthy, ambient and avant-garde style, Banning's track titles are new age as ever, and first up is a harp-plucking and ethereal "Everlasting Moments". Some of the wallowing textures of the former have been reduced for more acoustic, and sometimes oriental-leaning sounds in "A Sea Of Glass", which makes for a perfect listening session during those early mornings when you're in need of a mind-cleansing pep-up.

Those looking forward to more of the searing jungle instrumentals Bannon deployed on his excellent debut LP Alternate/Endings will be disappointed with Patterns of Excel a fifteen track exploration of glitchy ambient electronics and droning textures. It feels right at home on Ninja Tune.

She was talented spotted in her teenage years by a local music impresario in the town of Shiptown. The music she recorded spanned all soul styles and is now collected on this great album My Mind Holds Onto Yesterday. When disco took over as the big new sound by 1978, Strand was no longer called upon by Biggs so this remains her only work.

Review: There's a point in Sit, Sleep where you don't know whether to sit up and listen intently, or close your eyes and enjoy some time on the brink of slumber, that ambient place where realities and fantasies seem to drift into one another. Bardo Pond's lasting legacy will always be the kind of tracks that seem to blur lines between worlds, both stylistically and in terms of form. At times abstract, in other moments the perfectly formed solid wall of white noise.

This, Volume 1, was the first in a series of eight EPs that span 18 years, starting out in 2000 and then opting for one in the saga each year through to 2005. At which point things got much more sporadic. Timelines aside, the tracks here are a great introduction both the outfit themselves and the Volume concept - basically experimental improvisation that pulls you between acid rock, noise, shoegaze, and space.

Review: It's a strange magic that's driven Bardo Pond in their quarter century as a band, yet it's one that effortlessly separates them from any other band operating in similar shoegaze, drone or psychedelic worlds - the drifting, languorous soundscapes, jammed-out abstractions and Neil Young-style guitar workouts of 'Under The Pines' coalesce into a glorious soundworld of trippy rapture and trance-inducing transcendence, steered by Isobel Sollenberger's radiant and reflective voice. One might argue that Bardo Pond have a certain style they've rarely deviated from in their life, yet 'Under The Pines' is as vivid a transmission as we've yet received from this otherworldly institution.

Review: The debut album from Barker & Baumecker has been a long time in the making, but its timing couldn't be better. With techno at a point of divergence, as producers like Untold and Blawan make the move from the UK end of the bass spectrum into straighter 4/4 fare, Transsektoral seems to offer a Berlin perspective on the same theme. Although the stark, often dramatic atmosphere is that of an Ostgut Ton record through and through, the whole thing is peppered with broken rhythms and lurching bass (see "Crows"), and even some inventive R&B sampling reminiscent of the Tri Angle family. Of course it also makes its concessions to the Berghain purists with the spluttering, acid toothed techno of "Trafo" and "Silo", or the relentless "Buttcracker" but all things considered, this is one of the most vital albums Ostgut Ton have released since The Traveller - which is high praise indeed.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett returns with a third solo album that makes another assured leap forwards. The artist here sounds truly relaxed and comfortable in herself and with her art. She serves up an exquisite world of sound that is intimate and inviting thanks to the fine production work from Stella Mozgawa, who is known for her work with Warpaint, Sharon Van Etten and Kurt Vile. This most intimate and personal work has alluring groovers like 'Before You Gotta Go' and the optimistic 'Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To.' It arrives on a lovely limited gatefold blue vinyl with a spot-varnished sleeve.
