Selador Decade Vol 1

Minimal House/Tech House
3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Zobol - "Data Wars" (5:01)
Review: Exit Planet Earth continues its exploration of the world of electro universe with an expansive, extended six track EP, featuring The Advent x Zein Ferreira, DeFeKT, London Modular Alliance, Konertymi and Zobol. The Advent, whose weekly Gardening Club residency in the mid-90s helped to drag electro out of the realms of the retro and back into the future, team up with Zein Ferreira for a Kraftwerk-on-speed extended mix of 'CarpeDiem', before London Modular Alliance's more moderately paced but still squiggle and bleep laced 'Lump of Coal' plus a 'beats' breakdown for the DJs. The B-side brings us the acid-powered 'Pulssi' by Konerytmi, the bouncy, breakdance-friendly 'Radar' by DeFeKT, and the relatively pure, optimistic sonics of Zobol's 'Data Wars'. Thumbs up all round.

Open To Close (dub) (4:39)
Fake Action (5:05)
Lover (4:54)
Review: Age of Rage aka the studio powerhouse pairing that is Dubbyman and Dan Piu is back on Sole Aspect with a third outing. The title of this one, Credo, is from the Latin word for a "firm set of beliefs and principles." It finds the duo serving up deeply soulful spirits and romantic atmospheres with dusty house beats as the vehicle. 'Open to Close' is balmy and gentle, with the dub even more warm for you to sink into. 'Fake Action' brings shuffling grooves and lush cosmic designs and 'Lover' is a smoochy closer that echoes Sade. Lovely stuff as always from this accomplished partnership.

Review: Curing what ails you, Dokta Venom slaps down a full prescription pad at AKO HQ with four marvellous medicines. Following the heavyweight 'Dreadnox' on 'AKOizm Vol 4' last year, each of these tracks reveals a different side to this brutalist quack; 'Sound Lord' is pure 3am slammage, all bulldozer breaks and such, 'Eden's Rise' is a breezy pad-heavy goosebump bonanza while the title track 'The Artistic Truth' flips things with much more of a jazzy, abstract twist. Finally 'Speed Jazz' finishes the dosage on a mellow cosmic soul touch. Get well soon.

Mosaik Kollektif - "Twisted City" (5:49)
Dj Laurel - "Let The Good Time" (4:29)
Lego Edit - "Party Freaks" (Lego party dub) (5:59)
Review: You can always count on the Legofunk crew to bring you disco and funk edits from less mined sources that will absolutely rock it on the floor. On this instalment we have five different joints to get stuck into, from the slow Afro house throw down of Alexny's 'Meneao' to Siggatunez's slinky, soulful groover 'Boogie'. Look out for the low tempo seduction of DJ Laurel's 'Let The Good Time', which will get a warm-up slot thoroughly juiced for the night to come. The Lego Edit 'party dub' of 'Party Freaks' heads more explicitly towards peak-time house, but as ever it's delivered with heart and soul thanks to the vintage source material powering the track.

Review: Organ-filled ambient house courtesy of a four-way collab between AP, DJ Tjizza, Eversines and Michelle, who all form parts of the UK dance music collective Picnic. Refractive acid, dreamatic plastics, stoic echoics... every possible corner of trance-inducing dance heaven is scoured on this all-encompassing EP, the highlights of which, in our humble opinions, are 'Nyxation' and 'Panther'.

Aron - "Shift"

Idana - "Sunday"
Vern - "Orizont"
Review: Italian label Micro Orbit takes its bow here in the form of a various artists' EP across a nice heavyweight 12". Aron opens up with 'Shift' which is a bubbly minimal house cut with aqueous synths and popping drums. Distilled Noise's 'Trenta' then layers up more silky synth sounds with underlapping bass waves lifting you off your feet. Idana ups the ante with more uptempo and quickened drums and bass loops that are detailed with gorgeously wispy melodies on 'Sunday' before Vern closes down with 'Orizont' which is the most sleek and tech-y cut of the lot. As far as first releases go, this is one that bodes well for the future.

Review: Drum n' bass picture discs are a rare treat, and a sensitive medium at that. Laying our grubby hands on one of these could be like touching a fortress made of feathers, but it's all worth it for the music contained therein. Suburban Base welcome four pushers both old and new to their latest V/A EP here, opting for dry, jump-up drum n' bass emphasising clean subs, filtered guitar lines and summer-of-soul vocal licks.

Toby O'Connor - "Low & Slow" (4:53)
Review: Tropical Disco Records rolls out more of their sun kissed goodness on an impressive 21st volume of their self-titled series. As always there is a devious selection of disco dons taking charge of the course cuts, with Dominic Balchin getting the party started with big trumpet stabs and soul train grooves. Da Lukas slows things down and goes for a more deep, swinging cut with his 'Get Disco Vibes' and then scene veteran Moodena's 'Who Got The Keys?' gets more jazzy, with some fantastic keys and funky bass. Toby O'Connor closes out with a steamy and romantic slow jam, and in doing so rounds out an EP packed with the sort of positive vibes we all need right now.

Restore My Soul (DJ Rush remix) (4:29)
Review: Two right legends of techno unite here for the latest release on Drumcode. Label chief Adam Beyer presents 'Restore My Soul' featuring Chicago hard techno veteran DJ Rush, their relationship stretching back nearly three decades from when they both started out in the' 90s. The title track is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor; a seething, mental groove featuring Rush's stern vocal delivery atop, before taking the energy levels into the peak time on the adrenalised thrasher 'Control'. Over on the flip, you are treated to a rework of the title track by DJ Rush himself in his typically stomping and orotund style.

Restore My Soul (Hi-lo remix) (7:37)
Control (Anna remix) (7:21)
Review: Next up from the leading label in the world of so-called Business Techno are a couple of contemporary remixes of some Adam Beyer classics. His Restore My Soul EP was written with DJ Rush and now gets reworked by modern day greats ANNA and HI-LO. The latter, a regular on the likes of Filth on Acid, goes first and flips the title track into a bruising and panel beaten techno roller with coarse drums and peak time intent. Brazilian talent ANNA then offers a more subversive and slow boring take on 'Control' that has twitchy synths and firmly rooted techno drums.

Review: For those with their ear to the ground, 'Make Me' has been an underground monster hit for Borai and Denham Audio for time, but now it's getting a proper 12" release on Room Two with some heavyweight remixes. Taking a classic 90s vocal sample and giving it a thorough ruffing up, the original is hard to top, but Big Ang and Mani Festo turn in suitably rowdy versions which continue the theme of hardcore revivalism in fine style. Meanwhile bassline legend Paul Sirrell steps up for a flamboyant version which harks back to the original mid-90s cut that inspired 'Make Me' in the first place.

Distilled Noise - "Agape" (6:57)
Review: Prognose has sniffed out another collection of retro-future minimal tech house gems here with four artists offering up one track each for this third new outing. Boss Priester's 'Let The Kids Play' is a nice loopy opener with smooth drums and cool synths that have hints of cosmic magic. Jesse Jacob gets more unsigned with the surging 90s bassline and groggy chords of 'Time To Undust This Machine' then Garouda's' 'All The People' has a bit of a garage shuffle as it hurries on through the stars. Distilled Noise' 'Agape' does some freaky things with filtered vocals and skittish percussion.

Review: Young but already promising label Small Great Things serves up a third instalment in its Small Great Tunes series and once again it is true to its name. This one assembles a series of interesting artists starting with Marc Brauner & Luca Olivotto's far sighted deep house dreamer 'Hallo Hallo'. In solo mode, Brauner offers more uplifting house with a great r&b voice sample and Olivotto pumps the party with the US garage of 'Love Moves'. The flip side keeps the good times flowing with vocal house from David Silver, a deep and bubbly groove cruise from Nephews and more raw jam from DJ Merci.

His 'You're In My System' came initially back in 1982 then got some remixes from Dance Quin in Ibadan in 2019 and now the original extended club mix and one of those Quin dubs get pressed up to a vital white vinyl 12" on Kaoz Theory. Review: The recently formed Alienist Rec has done a fine job of setting out its sonic stall so far and now the label looks to a pair of artists to take care of one side each of their third 12". Starting things off is promising young Moroccan producer Chaou B with the twitchy disco-techno of 'Instinct' and its flashes of synth light. Review: Synkronized is just three releases deep now but is already an assured and reliable outlet for fresh house sounds. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. It's a silky one with balmy pads that encourage you to dive right in. It's a varied bag of artists at the controls with Michele Chiavarini going first with the throwback vocals and piano-laced house grooves of 'Let Me See You Clap Your Hands'. Emmaculate's 'Konga Madness' has stomping Afro vibes and big horn energy making for a big carnival vibe and then things get impossibly smooth and seductive on the flip with Terry Hunter, DJ Spen & Reelsoul combining to great effect on 'Warning' (feat Rona Ray. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Review: The present face of IDM is here heard occupied by dream duo D'Arcangelo and Karsten Plum, whose latest joint effort for Acid Avengers bowls us over with its acid tweezings, pangs, twingings, twangs, thrums and flits-past. The pH scale skyrockets to the point of insanity on Pflum's side, with 'Hornfish Acid' and 'Aroe Acid' jointly corroding the full length of the Earth's core with their snippy but incisive sizzles and 'ows, until we reach a forbidden underworld uncannily reminiscent of Oz - except the faces of the protagonists are horribly twisted into a yellow, illegal-raved rictuses. D'Arcangelo's 'Gawain' does equally as much with its eerie sprung-verbed chroma-chords and muted but moving melodies; so too does 'Walker Two' raise the tempo to silly speeds, coming as a veritable velociraptor of Druqks-y breaks and drill bits, all let loose from the barrel at a surely illegal rate of fire.

'Easy Tiger' takes on even more of a jazz mindset with its woozy sax and lavish brushed drum swings. Dreamy tackle. Perfect for the long dark nights ahead.

Dam Swindle - "Ballin" (6:30)
Ben Rau - "Be Who You Want To Be" (6:10)
Review: Kaoz Theory's Organized Kaos series exists for one reason: to collect together on vinyl previously digital-only gems buried in the label's ever-growing catalogue. Volume two naturally sticks rigidly to this script, first offering up a 2015 cut from Dam Swindle (from the time when they were known as Detroit Swindle) - the chunky, rhythmically elastic and insanely bass-heavy brilliance of soul-flecked gem 'Ballin'. Over on the reverse there's more previously digital-only gold in the shape of Ben Rau's 'Be Who You Want To Be', a driving, thickset and suitably heavy chunk of peak-time deep house heaviness smothered in spacey chords, cut-up vocal snippets and booming TB-303 bass. Two tried and tested cuts land on wax for the first time, what's not to like?

Review: Now that Heist Recordings is 10 years old, label bosses Dam Swindle have decided the time is right to launch a new series of EPs featuring big tunes and sought-after classics from the imprint's archive. Fittingly, volume one begins with the track that opened the label's debut release - the classic US deep house style bounce of Dam Swindle's 'The Breakup' - before we're offered the chance to savour the organ-rich, hands-in-the-air positivity of Scan 7's brilliant 'The Best Is Yet To Come'. Over on the B-side, Fouk's 'Kill Frenzy' is a dusty, jazz-sampling deep house treat, Demuir's 'Werq Feel Gruv Vogue' is a twinkling, loop-based dancefloor delight, and Adriano's 'Me & You & Her' is a sun-splashed, disco-flecked peak-time treat.

Review: Bristol-based band DAMEFRISOR is composed of vocalist Kazhi Jahfar, guitarists Garin Curtis and Jamie Brown, plus synths and keys from Sam Nobbs and Megan Jenkins on bass. They formed back in 2019 and craft wide open soundscapes imbued with industrial post-rock and electronic twists. Nyle Dowd's drums power each tune and there is always drama to be found in the pulsating beats. Passionate and empowered vocals touch on notions of loneliness and "the reality of feeling invisible in the modern world" while always offering moments of real dancefloor clout.

Review: Get ready for a rush-inducing dose of proper soulful vocal house from the mighty Dames Brown. On this record for Defected, Detroit's foremost trio of Athena Johnson, Lisa Cunningham and Teresa Marbury linked up with the mighty Amp Fiddler and Andres for a rip through house music as real as it gets. The original 12" mix of 'What Would You Do?' is hard to beat for raw, heavy-hitting groove and production, but there are some choice remixes included here for those who have different needs, whether it's the bouncy jazz funk of Two Soul Fusion's version or the smoother sound of Folamour creating a sleek disco house variation for the peak time crowd.

Review: When it comes to gospel-powered 21st century dance music, Detroit trio Dames Brown have been involved in many of the most memorable records - not least Sophie Lloyd anthem 'Calling Out' and Horse Meat Disco hook-up 'Message To The People'. Here they join forces with fellow Motor City musician Waajeed for another arms-aloft classic in the making. In its original form, 'Glory' blurs the boundaries between gospel disco and gospel house, with the trio's powerful vocals rising rubbery bass guitar, loose-limbed beats and riotous organ licks aplenty. It comes accompanied by two fine remixes: a stomping, piano riff-powered gospel house take from Rob and Lyric Hood's Floorplan project, and a stomping, thickset gospel disco 'dancing club dub' courtesy of Kelly G.

Review: Deep house doesn't get any better than when it's from scene-pioneer Chez Damier. The US legend has been finding the most sensuous and emotive sounds for decades, not only as a producer but also as a label boss. His House of Chez label cooks up some more goodness here with his own collab with H2H opening up with mystic Middle Eastern melodies drifting over smooth beats. Damian Rausch's remix then brings something more heavy and El Kazed heads off to the stars on waves of cosmic synth lushness. Last of all is Italo legend Giorgio Morderer with the gloriously soulful 'Engery.'

Fried All Day (Alex Arnout remix) (7:00)
Review: Dan Formless' "Fried All Day" is a minimalistic tech house track that becomes the second release for the upstart label Bank of Switches. The original track is characterized by its repetitive beat, sparse instrumentation, and hypnotic atmosphere. The title 'Fried All Day' evokes a sense of exhaustion and overindulgence, which is reflected in the track's strangely hypnotic rhythm and quirky sounds. The Alex Arnout remix takes a more driving approach, with a more upbeat and melodic approach. Overall, this record is essential for lovers of minimal tech house and techno. Showcasing Dan Formless' unique and uncompromising style he is bringing the fun back to dance music enthusiasts with this one.

Review: Operative since the early 1990s, Dan Piu is one of Switzerland's most storied deep house and futurist techno producers. His regular EPs are rarely less than excellent, and even those that slip under the radar tend to be solid if not spectacular. The good news is that Piu is in prize form on this Spacebased Recordings released five-tracker. Check first sumptuous, Needs (Not Wants)-influenced deep house number 'Times' - a masterclass in mood and melody - before admiring the bleeping, intergalactic excellence of spacey deep house gem 'Dorsey'. He opts for a more energetic, warehouse-ready early 90s house/techno sound on 'Monitor Body Process 101', doffs a cap to stargazing Motor City techno on 'Flying Dolphins', and showcases a spoken word vocal from Roger Versey on the atmospheric, turn-of-the-90s Nu Groove style brilliance of 'Another Day'.

On this release for High Fashion we get treated to two fierce and fabulous interpretations of the track from producers who know a thing or two about how to set the party alight. Review: Super janky and watery minimal from Chile's Ruta 5 label, helmed and regularly released-on by local mainstay Dandy Jack. Of course, Ricardo occupies a remix spot: who else? 'The Gay From Ipanema' is the minimal originals lover's choice, channelling a straight, Herbertized palette of found metallic sound. 'Labamola' nods more to bleep, while the remix credited to one mysterious 'R Villalobos' fearlessly ups the tempo to electro velocity, working in no end of sci-fi whooshes and burbles.

Review: The second release on the I Travel To You label is another delightful outing with plenty of character. It comes from Norwich-Manchester duo Dangerous Goods who manage to bottle up influences from the worlds of Detroit and jazzy house, disco, funk and more in the opening tune 'Special Love'. It is a bristling tune packed with musicality and old school synth sounds which continued through the stepping bass seances and snappy machine drum sounds of 'Breakout'. Last of all is the more horizontal and dubby sundown workout that is 'Theme.'

Review: The talented Greek duo Artificial DRM - already renowned for their contributions to Koslif, De Stijl and Semantica Records - come through for the sixth Alpengluhen release. 'Enigma' is a curious experimental, IDM and ambient release, neither settling for out-and-out categorisability nor giving up the danceable ends of things and happily resting in the crosstalk between genres. All circling around similar tempi but with some variation therein, these four unnamed tracks reveal themselves, together with their textural details, only as slowly as a desert landscape might reveal itself to a parched wanderer; only through somatic repetitions, such as endless walking, panting, and squinting - compare these to deep listening and/or uninterrupted turntable playing - might we make out the mirages or fata morgana through the horizontal heat haze.

Review: Having got the juices flowing via a split re-edit release with Jacques Renault earlier in the year, Cosmic Kids member Daniel T returns with his first full solo EP of floor-ready reworks. Arguably the most ear catching of the lot is "Trinidad Trouble", a fiendishly percussive, cowbell-laden tropical disco affair blessed with carnival-ready flute flourishes and heavily accented Trinidadian vocals. It sounds like a genuinely sweat-soaked peak-time treat. The hits keep coming elsewhere across the EP, from the "do the Bus-Stop" hustle of Blaxpolitation disco rework "Hit The Streets", which provides a seriously strong opening gambit, to the leisurely, laidback and sumptuous sounds of trumpet-sporting afternoon delight "Penguin Vacation".

And the new school talent doesn't disappoint with a selection of truly deep house sounds in a couple of different styles. The first is all bottomless depths, dreamy moods and escapist pads that are unhurried and mediative. The second, 'Jazzy Dummy' (feat Kems Kriol), is more party starting with its playful distant sax sounds, lively vocals and leggy drums, then the third, 'So Fruit,' is heavy, hard-hitting deep house with superb flute leads that echo the great St Germain track 'So Flute'.

Review: The latest on-point reissue from Italy's Groovin' label takes us back to 1993, and the Peter Daou/Danny Tenaglia-produced debut single from vocalist Daphne Rubin-Vega. It's a far breezier, groovier and sweeter record than many of Tenaglia's later productions (which tended towards the muscular), with Rubin-Vega's quietly soulful vocal seemingly drifting across a backing track rich in warm chords and baggy, breakbeat-driven house grooves. All of the various mixes hit the spot, with the trippy, dub-style Reconstruction Mix, vibraphone-laden Groove Instrumental and low-slung Never Do Dub standing out. The Acapella Reprise, which features rich chords and vocal snippets, is also rather good.

Das Komplex kicks off with a serious aqueous rhythm drenched in waves of synth with a pained vocal sample that really makes it stick in your mind. Tecwaa knocks it back even further to a slow motion underwater dub current that gently moves you to a state of bliss. 'Nebula' from Achim Maerz is more upright and upbeat, with bright chords shining through the vast groove caverns as neat chords dance up top. 'Sky Waves' closes out in warm, rough edged lo-fi deep house fashion.
