Review: Over the course of her three year solo career, London-based Australian Carla Dal Forno has steadily moved from a dark, stylish and bleak all-electronic sound to something a little warmer and more organic in tone. On "Look Up Sharp", her third album, she continues this trend, complimenting her usual lo-fi drum machines and synths with low-slung post-punk bass and the kind of pastoral, traditional instrumentation more often associated with folk music (think flutes, recorders, clarinet etc.). It's a curious blend, but one that works wonderfully well throughout the album, and especially on those songs to which she adds evocative, often melancholic vocals.

Review: Take it from us - you want to get to know Denovali Germany on an intimate level. The label has been putting out tearjerking contemporary classical and far-reaching electronic compositions since 2005, lays claim to its own festival of forward thinking music and generally doesn't put a foot wrong. Review: Mark de Clive-Lowe, Shigeto and Melanie Charles build plenty of bridges between various different sound worlds on this new collaborative long player. de Clive-Lowe is a top-level composer and pianist, DJ and someone who himself joins the dots between jazz, hip-hop and dance. Charles is a jazz vocalist and flautist while Shigeto hails from Detroit and brings mad drumming and production skills. They came together in 2018 and have played all over the world and this album finds them reinterpreting works by the late great Pharoah Sanders including 'The Creator Has a Master Plan' (Part's 1 & 2) while laying down their versions of soulful house and hip hop in-between. Review: Five years after the second life of Death was started with the release of their revelatory 1976 album, "For The Whole World To See", "III" slams the door on the vault with a powerful set of songs that bring equal amounts of rock and ethereal soul-searching, in high-fidelity, rich bottomed, studio-grade sound. Alongside songs from 1975, 1976 and 1980, "III" contains two songs from 1992, as the Hackney brothers reconvened nearly a decade after they'd stopped playing together. The album serves as a companion piece of sorts to the "A Band Called Death" documentary, tracking the band's movement from spiritual young rockers to older and wiser, bruised-but-undefeated brothers, in pure musical terms. David Hackney's visual representation of Death was a triangle, where "spiritual", "mental" and "physical" formed the three angles. With this in mind, "For The Whole World To See" is clearly the physical corner, with its undeniable proto-punk power; "Spiritual-Mental-Physical" explores the mental axis, with Death working through some of their influences including The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and even ELO in their practice space. "III" is the spiritual end of the portrait, bookended by the dreamlike rock visions of David Hackney that created and propelled the band called Death.

Review: Jean Pierre Decerf's records have been sampled by top talent in the game (Wu-Tang Clan's RZA) and have also been massively inspirational to the likes of indie talent such as Air. However, the Parisian has always been something of a recluse and it's only now that his best moments have been collected into a definitive compilation by Born Bad Records. As both the cover and title suggest, this stuff is pure psychedelia from start to finish and tracks like "Like Flight" are simply stunning, where freaky guitar riffs meet with twisted synth patterns, funky percussion swings and seductive vocals. Not to exaggerate or anything but this LP might well be the best thing that's landed here at Juno HQ this week and you'd be silly not to pick it up. Essential electronic and discofied innovations.

Review: .Often considered to be one of the biggest commercial flops in music recording history, Standing In The Spotlight was the 1989 debut solo album from Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone. Released under his rap moniker Dee Dee King, the bizarre project served up an amalgam of old school hip-hop, late 50s garage rock and even doo-wop, all blended together in chaotic fashion, and led by Dee Dee's new gangster bravura. It's been noted that the hip-hop-centric attire seen on the cover was adorned by Dee Dee at his last few Ramones shows shortly before departing, which drew major ire from his bandmates. Tapping Marky Ramone to oversee percussion samples, and even enlisting Debbie Harry (Blondie) to provide backing vocals on 'Mashed Potato Time', and, 'German Kid', with the latter featuring vocals sung in both English and German (nodding to Dee Dee's growing up as an army brat), the album was crafted with every earnest intention of launching Dee Dee's solo career. Conceptually inspired whilst in rehab and used as a project of focus when embracing his newfound sobriety; the sheer enthusiasm and fearlessness of Standing In The Spotlight grants it a pass and a place as a truly absurd offshoot oddity from a vital member of the one of the defining punk bands.

It takes the form of an album by France's Deep Nalstrom who has established himself in Bristol with his tripped out and ethereal soundscapes. Review: Over his long and illustrious career, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane has made music in many complimentary styles, but it's been broken beat with which he's been associated with for the least two decades. Alongside his friend and regular studio partner Kaidi Tatham, he's developed a particular strain of "bruk" that incorporates elements of jazz, electrofunk, soul, boogie, jazz-funk and, more occasionally, hip-hop. Review: Former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe formed Demolition 23 in New York in 1993, and their sole album should be considered essential listening for any lover of that ramped up glam-punk sound. 'Nothin's Alright' was an absolute earworm of a lead single from the album, but throughout there's stomping, singalong anthems to get your strut on to. Shockingly, this is the first time the album has ever received an official vinyl pressing, so don't expect this one to hang around once the Hanoi faithful catch wind of it.

Review: It's 1990 and Depeche Mode couldn't really be riding much higher in the global music stakes. Having just released Violator, the band had finally debuted an album inside the Billboard Top 10 for the first time in their almost-decade-long history, and pretty much anyone who came into contact with the record was very quickly captivated by its sound. While definitely not a curveball, it marked an expansion of the group's existing style. Some have described it as synth-pop, others alternative rock. In many ways, it's a dance floor album, one that embraces goth and coldwave at its very core. Captured during their tour at that time, Set In Stone features landmark singles from the LP - 'Personal Jesus', of course, and 'World In My Eyes' - it also proves beyond any doubt that a Depeche Mode show is about more than simply playing the hits.

Review: Following on from their acclaimed genre-pioneering debut album Milo Goes To College in 1982, frontman Milo Aukerman of California punk heroes Descendents literally did just that, to pursue a career in biology of all things. With his bandmates touring the record without their titular vocalist and stretched between groups, especially drummer Bill Stevenson who wound up touring with Black Flag in the interim, the desire to craft a sophomore follow up was constantly at the back of their minds, and once Aukerman returned home to hear the more pop-centric direction of the new material Stevenson had been crafting, they jumped into the studio with little to no prep time to record what many regard as the first true pop-punk album - I Don't Want To Grow Up. With their earlier, raw sound slightly more polished and embracing hook-laden melodies at almost every sonic turn, mark our words when we say that there would be no Blink-182, no Millencolin and no persistent sub-genre squabbles if it wasn't for this potent and everlasting gem of a record, which also served as the first of two albums with guitarist Ray Cooper, while being their last with original bassist Tony Lombardo (who simply didn't want to tour).

Review: Alzheimer, the record, is a stranger everywhere on earth - that is to say, wherever you might be listening to it, it will always sound like it's from somewhere else. The product of a foreign culture, for even though it was created and recorded in Caracas, Venezuela between January 1997 and 9/9/99, it's the result of forgetting everything and recomposing a new Sound World from the faintest, blurriest recollections of musical culture. Its purpose is confusion, its uniqueness is creating it in the realm of Music; a clash of instruments and minds. Everything you hear on the record was performed by humans and insects, spoken and sung by living beings, roughly a decade before the smartphone. The Alzheimer ensemble still exists and fully supports this initiative of celebrating the 24th year of its first of two published albums on vinyl. The spirit of our group will never be captured by robotic 'intelligence'.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but finally Beatrice Dillon has delivered her debut album - and it's a peach. It sees her "Workaround" a set rhythmic idea - 150 BPM percussive polyrhythms influenced by various global drumming styles - to create a suite of tracks rooted in bass-heavy UK style "broken techno" but vastly different in tone and style. Review: Indie and alternative rock have changed a lot since the mighty Jr. first hit us with grizzly riffs and Gen X tones. Nevertheless, this is a band that helped change the face of the Western guitar scene back in the late-1980s, and their influence and impact is still felt today. The whole reason the sound of this three piece is so familiar is it helped pave the way for much that has come since.
Sweep It Into Space might be the best reminder of that. Originally pegged for release last year, with Kurt Vile involved, sadly he fell ill and was unable to offer his talent, leaving the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup to do their thing. And do their thing they did. It's lo-fi but powerful, romantic but broken, high-energy but cool, gritty rock music for streets, skateparks and late-night bars and bonfires, and we never want it to end.

Review: Malmo, Sweden-based Bolero Record store boss Dip Shim comes correct on his debut album with a sublime series of personal and storytelling cuts that find him digging deep into his reserves. The music is said to draw on his childhood in Spain and mixes up elements of downtempo, electro, techno and house. Review: Serial collaborator DJ Sotofett pops up on Honest Jon's with a typically excellent doublepack built around a quartet of studio hook-ups. Aside from Versatile boss Gilb'r (here lending a helping hand on some African-influenced ambient house), most of the collaborators are new additions to the eccentric Norwegian's out-there audio universe. The two tracks with Phillip Lauer and JKS - an intergalactic ambient affair and a chunk of early Fila Brazillia style deep house - are particularly potent, while there's something deliciously warm and evocative about the Norwegian's explorations with Finn Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Best of all, though, are the two tracks with African vocalists Karlolin Tampere and Maimouna Haugen; "Nondo Riddimix", which boasts deliciously dense drums and sparse, exotic melodies, is arguably the highlight.

Review: Leaving Records continues to gift us the most blissful sounds from parts unknown, or more specifically the LA underground, with this album from Fabiano Do Nascimento. The Brazil-born guitarist carries his roots through into his playing, gently folding samba and choro influences and a rich background in Brazilian classical into compositions embellished with the lightest touches of electronics. It's a resolutely soothing listen, as you would expect from Leaving, but it's not a static field of ambience. Rather, there are hidden treasures and intriguing pathways Nascimento leads us down, always finding a sense of resolution even the surroundings shift before our ears.

Review: By this point in time Dog Eat Dog had already said a fair bit. Throwing the Warrant EP at the world in 1993, marking the arrival of a hybrid music tour de force among the alternative and skate rock and punk community. Play Games was the band's second full length album, and while it perhaps didn't boast the kind of anthem 'No Fronts' became two years earlier, it still very much represented an act setting out their stall and winning. Albeit perhaps not in terms of chart impact.
Then again, that was never really the Dog Eat Dog way. This, after all, was one of the first outfits - in the US at least - to try and marry hardcore punk with hip hop, welding two distinctly counter-cultural but (at the time) disparate genres together. And for the most part they succeeded. This is one of those parts.

Review: Don Cherry's vast discography has got myriad highlights. Some are mad and hard to explain, some are trippy and immersive, and some are mystical. On The Eternal Now - one of two albums cut for Sonet - he was joined by Swedish players like Bernt Rosengren, Agneta Arnstrom, and Bengt Berger. The vibe is very much worldly jazz and it is layered with strange percussion, gongs, pianos, and other percussive instruments. Vocals from Cherry himself can also be found along the way and as such this is one of his most expansive works.

Review: Don Leisure's last album in 2017 was a real cult classic for hip hop and beat lovers. First World Records have finally got the follow up ready, and the much anticipated Shaboo Strikes Back does not leave anyone disappointed. It stretches out over 25 tracks and each one is a balmy and heady mix of fuzzy synths, wooden drum hits and smart samples that take in everything from serene strings to old soul vocals. It's a widescreen listen with loose tambourines dangled over gypsy funk synths on 'Shaboo Strikes Back' while 'Sugar Cane Juice' is a more edgy hip-hop cut. Super stuff.

This is a full-length project on which these two formidable Welsh artists have collaborated together. They spent plenty of time there soaking up its aura and also creating a club setting with smoke machine, lights and so on. Then they turned on their gear and got going, with the results of those sessions presented here. They are fluid, ever-evolving soundscapes of tastefully reduced techno, futurist scenes and gentle but potent rhythms that find a perfect home on Neel and Donato Dozzy's Spazio Disponibile label. It's music that moves your mind and body in the most subtle and subversive of ways.

It has now been re-used for the name of William Doyle's latest album in his post-East India Youth years, which have thus far been marked by a series of blissful instrumental LPs and the excellent, song-focussed Your Wilderness Revisited in 2017.
