Don't let the number of tracks deceive; the project clocks in at just under half an hour, in large part thanks to the long-form number 'Yield To Force', which pits strange distant alarm sounds against graveyard-shifting fingerstyle guitars, in what amounts to a night-drive around old town suited well to any atmospheric surrealist crime flick. Only your first and last tracks use vocals, and when they do, the combination of deeply high-and-low-end registers are great complements for the artists' lyrical musings on misery and wonderment.

David Vanian, splitting off from his role as the lead singer of the Damned, once made an effective detour known as David Vanian and the Phantom Chords. The Chords' self-titled debut from 1995, reissued here, is a fusion of rockabilly and gothic rock - often classified as gothabilly. Review: When Marie Davidson announced last year that she would be, "retiring from club music", many wondered what she'd do next. Renegade Breakdown, her first album recorded with a full band (L'Oeil Nu), answers that question. It sees the Canadian artist and her new collaborators deliver suitably arresting, personal and ear-catching songs built on mixing and matching a surprisingly wide variety of musical inspirations, from Blondie, classic disco and mutilated heavy metal guitars, to Kraftwerk, Billie Holiday, Fleetwood Mac and Daft Punk. It's a big shift for the previously highly experimental artist, but thanks to her skill as both a a producer and performer, one that works magnificently well.

Review: It's 1990 and Depeche Mode couldn't really be riding much higher in the global music stakes. Having just released Violator, the band had finally debuted an album inside the Billboard Top 10 for the first time in their almost-decade-long history, and pretty much anyone who came into contact with the record was very quickly captivated by its sound. While definitely not a curveball, it marked an expansion of the group's existing style. Some have described it as synth-pop, others alternative rock. In many ways, it's a dance floor album, one that embraces goth and coldwave at its very core. Captured during their tour at that time, Set In Stone features landmark singles from the LP - 'Personal Jesus', of course, and 'World In My Eyes' - it also proves beyond any doubt that a Depeche Mode show is about more than simply playing the hits.

Review: When vital bandmember Andrew Fletcher suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions for 'Memento Mori', even Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered aloud whether Depeche Mode would continue. Yet somehow, Gore and Gahan put their much-discussed differences aside, knuckled down and produced something fittingly special: an album that may well be the iconic outfit's most consistent and impressive body of work for decades. Review: Indie and alternative rock have changed a lot since the mighty Jr. first hit us with grizzly riffs and Gen X tones. Nevertheless, this is a band that helped change the face of the Western guitar scene back in the late-1980s, and their influence and impact is still felt today. The whole reason the sound of this three piece is so familiar is it helped pave the way for much that has come since.
Sweep It Into Space might be the best reminder of that. Originally pegged for release last year, with Kurt Vile involved, sadly he fell ill and was unable to offer his talent, leaving the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup to do their thing. And do their thing they did. It's lo-fi but powerful, romantic but broken, high-energy but cool, gritty rock music for streets, skateparks and late-night bars and bonfires, and we never want it to end.

It has now been re-used for the name of William Doyle's latest album in his post-East India Youth years, which have thus far been marked by a series of blissful instrumental LPs and the excellent, song-focussed Your Wilderness Revisited in 2017.
Things look to combine both here, with The Great Spans of Muddy Time an exceptional example of lo-fi folk-electronica, at times epic and monumental - huge, expansive synth builds - in other moods there's a Casiotone for the Painfully Alone quality to the more rhythmic tracks. An accomplished addition to an already exceptional oeuvre.

Review: Dredd Foole and the Din (the latter an alter-ego of a band called Mission of Burma) only recorded a handful of releases in the early to mid 1980s but are regarded in some quarters as one of that era's most underrated outfits. We Will Fall, the latest CD in Corbett vs Dempsey's dig through the short-lived band's archive, comprises music recorded - but never released - back in 1983. It offers a neat snapshot of their unique approach, in which pre-determined chords and lyrics provided a bed for all manner of improvisation. All of the material was recorded "live" from the sound desk with no post-production, much (though not all) at gigs within their home city of Boston. It's a gloriously freewheeling affair that joins the dots between heavy post-punk rock and more experimental, noise-influenced freeform workouts.

It was a broad stylistic work with a wide range of influences from pub rock to funk, disco and early rock and roll as well as British hall music. Most of the tunes are love songs with plenty of evocative character stories and tales of the working class folk of London's East End. It was often thought by fans to be the standout album of Dury's career.

Review: American rock band Duster aka multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber, and Jason Albertini return with a fourth full length album that across 13 intimate tunes explores interplanetary goth sounds. It is a heartbroken record weighed down by heavy emotions as the aching synths, nagging drums and unresolved guitars linger in the air. Though sad and melancholic on the surface, the delicate nature and softness of these tunes is also striking beautiful in many cases.
