Review: Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas and you'd be mad not to let her. It might be a bit late for this season but adding this one to your collection in good time for the festive fun of 2023 is a great move. Arguably one of the most iconic jazz vocalists ever, these tunes find her add plenty of swing time magic to a range of everyone's favourite and most classic Christmas cuts. From 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' to 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!' these are real winter warmers.

Review: It's been a long time since we'd heard about George Fitzgerald. Several years ago he was everywhere, appearing on all the top imprints at the time such as Hotflush, Hypercolour and Aus Music. After a long hiatus, Fitzgerald returns with his fourth full-length for Domino offshoot Double Six entitled Stellar Drifting. It's a wide selection of moods and grooves demonstrating the diversity within his sonic repertoire. The collaborations are particularly noteworthy, such as with Panda Bear on 'Passed Tense', with SOAK on 'Rainbows and Dreams' and teaming up with British outfit London Grammar on 'The Last Transmission'.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.

Review: Now this is exactly the sort of record we want to be hearing this summer. It's full of warmth, joy and soul from the New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier, who have already put out some well received 12"s on the Soundway Records label. As far as debuts go, it as good as they get with its majestic mix of big horns, deep house groves and euphoric disco vibes all finished with some super smooth vocals and the odd cheeky sax. Written in South Aukland during 2020 and capturing plenty of that spot's sun, the record brims with life affirming chords, bendy baselines and influences as broad and diverse as Roisin Murphy, Peven Everett and Tim Maia.

Review: Everyone has their favourite Fleetwood Mac jams and that's because the band had such great versatility. That is displayed on this collection of BBC2 Sessions which were recorded between 1968-9. The 14 tracks all take in a mix of R&B, electric blues, acoustic blues and more. The sessions were originally recorded for a variety of TV and radio programs and these versions have never made it onto any studio album. This collection is a sister release to the official Live At The BBC album and includes tracks that have guest spots from Christine Perfect, who as Christine McVie became a big part of the band going forwards.

Review: Cordial Recordings in partnership with Pilier Records are proud to announce the return of Philadelphia's legendary Mr Garfield Fleming, with this mini album of new productions. Fleming only released about three singles sporadically between 1981, 1984 and 1991 - but he's an incredibly under appreciated artist, we know that much. All female vocals are performed by fellow Pilier recording artist Mz. Nina. Featuring the sexy deep-funk of "Ain't Nothing Too Good For My Woman" - this one is a true diggers delight for those in the know! The late night boogie-down vibes of "Daddy's Home" or "Is That OK" takes things down slo-mo territory and of course we've just got to mention that terrific Daft Funk Funktion Creep Rub (yep!) of "Grass Ain't Greener".

Review: Besides a very limited edition version at the time, Flore's beguiling second album finally sees a full vinyl outing almost 18 months after its release. Forever weaving between the dots, French visionary Flore has always had a knack of mapping out whole musical universes ever since she emerged in the leftfield fringes of the breaks scene 20 years ago and Rituals is the best example of her widescreen vision so far. Eight tracks, eight explorations into the exciting hinterland between lofi, techno, beats and experimentalism, at points we're down in the gutter, slinking along to filthy distorted basslines ('Evidence'), the next we're spiralling away into the cosmos on a rocket fuelled by Weatherall ('You Were Here'), the next we're being slamdunked by rough, wonky techno ('Numen'), the next we're reloading and playing the whole darned thing again. And again. And again. Ritually.

Review: The aural aesthetics of Flying Lotus go hand-in-hand with film scores. There was the original music contributed to the Blade Runner 2049 anime prequel, tunes for Carole & Tuesday, and the small matter of his label Brainfeeder's new film division. Now we have Yasuke, his first full score.

If you're unaware, Yasuke is the Japanese animated series that's been a hit among fans of Far Eastern cartoons since arriving on Netflix. So far so factual, what about the actual tracks themselves? Well, this collection of arrangements is at once very FlyLo, and then not that FlyLo at all. Yes, there's plenty of deep genre diving going on, nodding to freewheeling jazz, prog rock, trap and more. But here it's much more minimalistic than many might be used to - resulting in a thoroughly original approach to soundtracking a samurai story, void of stereotypes, while never fully breaking from tradition.

Review: Some seven years after his last full-length excursion, Fort Romeau has finally got around to delivering a new album. Beings of Light is every bit as gorgeous and picturesque affair, with the Chester-born producer adding waves of attractive synthesizer sounds, colourful electronics, cascading guitars, dusty samples and loved-up riffs to sturdy deep house beats. The album's multitude of highlights include bluesy, post jazz-house number 'The Truth', the tech-tinged late-night wonkiness of 'Power of Grace', the sturdy and druggy after-hours chug of 'Ramona' and the dreamy lusciousness of title track 'Beings of Light'.

Review: London-based DIY label Fika are a trusted source of indie pop, and they're onto a winner presenting the first album from Fortitude Valley. They're fronted by Laura Kovic, who had served plenty of time in other East London bands like Tigercats before getting to steer the ship for this latest project. Although they're rooted in the UK and have a sound which nods to bands like The Beths and Lush, the name is actually a nod to the Brisbane music scene Kovic came up in. Whichever end of the earth you're listening from, the pop hooks come on fast in this irresistible album of jangly tunes with an indie bite.

Review: Here's something guaranteed to ensure a rush of excitement in deep house heads everywhere: a brand new album from much-loved U.S producer Fred P. It's the first under the previously unused F.P-Oner alias, and his first studio outing since 2013's Black Jazz Chronicles set, Codes & Metaphors. Unsurprisingly, the simply titled 5 is as inspired, sumptuous and melodious as you'd expect, with gentle dub house, jazz and - in the case of the wonderful "Infinite Love" - Detroit techno influences. While much of the album is slinky, sensual and ultra-deep (see the fabulous "Visions of You" and "Sleepless in Shibuku"), there are a couple of thrillingly percussive moments to get the pulse racing, including the African-influenced tribal workout "The Realm of Possibility".

Review: In 2009, longtime collaborators Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper made their production partnership official via the Director's Cut project. This epic retrospective gathers together the best tracks and remixes the duo completed prior to Knuckles' death in 2014. Disc one offers up original productions, including ear-catching re-makes of some of Knuckles' most famous early works (we're particularly fond of the versions of "The Whistle Song", "Your Love" and "I'll Take U There"). On the second disc you'll find the best of their remix work, with standouts including a sublime take on Candi Staton's "Hallelujah Anyway" and a storming, previously unreleased version of Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". As a bonus, the third disc mixes the best of the lot together in one suitably gorgeous, non-stop journey.

Review:
For the first time ever since the mid-80s, Robert Fripp's God Save The Queen is now avaialble on fresh vinyl once more. It was the second solo album from Fripp and is made up almost entirely of so-called 'Frippertronics,' which means much of the record was performed by improvisation. Under each track are solid drums and bass to get the grooves going and guitar loops for the five tracks were recorded live in concert during 1979. It's a real left turn of an album and one that can be as mesmerising as it can wild.

Review: Robert Fripp's pioneering work in electronic music reached its influential peak with the so-called Frippertronics tour of 1979. Creating compelling soundscapes out of tape loops might not seem revolutionary now, but it certainly was at the time, and out of the tour came this limited and highly prized album, perhaps the most sincere recorded document of Fripp's creative breakthrough. Now Let The Power Fall is being pressed on vinyl for the first time since its initial release on Editions EG in the 80s, and it comes with additional versions of '1984' never heard before.

Review: It's no surprise to see Amsterdam man Fritz Wentink issuing his debut album through Wolf Music, as the London label have been staunch supporters of his work with two 12" contributions over the past two years. The wonderfully named Rarely Pure, Never Simple adds to Wolf Music's growing artist album profile following long players from main men Medlar and Greymatter and further develops the all encompassing production style Wentink has displayed so eloquently for Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings and others. He seems most impressive on the more downbeat tracks done in collaboration with Loes Jongerling who possesses a quite astounding vocal delivery, though those craving some proper house will totally dig on cuts like "The Excitement Happens At Page 320".

Review: A work that surely needs little to no introduction, 'Repeater', was the seminal debut full-length from post-hardcore visionaries, Fugazi. From the demise of emo pioneers, Rites Of Spring, and hardcore punk godfathers, Minor Threat, came the enigmatic pairing of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye, with the latter's burgeoning artistry left fully untethered to conjure a work transcendent of post-hardcore or alternative rock. Mapping out the blueprint for punk and alternative music throughout the nineties, even predating the likes of Nirvana's 'Nevermind', or Pearl Jam's 'Ten'; few projects have stood the test of time or been cited as such an integral influence by a dynamic range of artists from Rage Against The Machine to The Dillinger Escape Plan to American Football. Aggressive, expansive and highly critical of issues still plaguing our world today, from drug abuse to greed and privatisation, the ethos of, 'Repeater', (quietly referencing The Beatles' 'Revolver') has only swollen with time.

Review: Needless to say, Fugazi were the kind of band whose first demo trounced most band's entire recording careers. Formed by four passionate musicians - from the ashes of Minor Threat, Embrace and Rites Of Spring - amidst a climate of idealistic fervour and youthful rage in Washington DC in the late '80s, this incendiary band took the energy and power of hardcore and broadened it out into a sound that was as expansive as it was incisive. This collection of ten songs, recorded incredibly at a point when the band had only played ten gigs, showcases an already unique and inspirational outfit creating a sound that would resonate around the hardcore scene of the world and way beyond.

Review: There's a saying. "If you bite it and you die, it's poison. If it bites you and you die, it's venom." Fusion Affair's latest album, Venom, is a modern homage to 1970 jazz-funk and fusion, looking back on the golden era of the sound. And by jove, it is venomous. But the kind of death this special venom introduces isn't just plain old death - it's ego death. That's the effect that mega-clean soulful, Moogy and synthy ensemble soul such as this has the power to induce. Seeping into our bloodstream comes the virtuosic drumming of Tao Ehrlich, the slick and understated basswork of Sofian El Mabrouk, and lead multi-instrumental brain Mathieu Guillot. This is a sonic snake you'll want to be bitten by.

Review: There is a great selection of reissues of Future Sound of London's back catalogue going on right now. It goes all the way back to 1988 when they first started chaining the game with their forward facing electronics and mix of rave, breaks, hardcore and ambient into something utterly fresh. It still resonates today, hence these reissues, and this one is a 25th Anniversary edition of Accelerator. This one was, at the time, seen as the group's most "commercially-minded" album but that takes nothing way from its visionary sonics and immersive sonic landscapes.

Review: The legendary Future Sound Of London have finally started dropping their Environments series on vinyl format, which will no doubt please the countless numbers of FSOL junkies out there! These sessions, the present title being the penultimate in a series of five, have been long sought after and they have been pivotal in shaping the sound of today's electronic dance music. Fifteen tracks in total here and the interesting thing about this album is the fact that it can be heard either as single tracks or as one developing and morphing wall of sound. All but one of these tracks, "Murmurations", are from way back and haven't seen the light of day, so get listening and indulge yourself in some pioneering sounds!

Review: Since the mid 2000s, veteran ambient duo Future Sound of London has been doing their own thing, occasionally dropping a new installment in their Environments series of albums. This edition - 6.5 - is their second of the year, and continues the pair's tradition of blending trippy elements to create soundscapes that veer from creepy iciness (the melancholic "Some Degree of Sanctuary"), to mystical ambient dub ("Something Approaching Happiness"), via deep space explorations ("Amplification of Intelligence"), and electronic psychedelia ("Halodule"). While they've arguably sanded down their rougher and weirder edges over the years, FSOL are still capable of crafting distinctive downtempo music that's as hallucinogenic as it comes.

Review: During the early-to-mid 1990s, Nurmad Jusat released a string of now sought-after singles on Likemind that showcased an emotive, far-sighted take on techno that still sounds timeless all these years on. This fine collection features various recordings he made - but never released - as Nuron and Fuge back in 1993 and '94. As inspired by the techno sounds of his native UK as the far-sighted brilliance of purist Detroit techno and the dreamy soundscapes of Larry Heard, it's a genuinely brilliant collection of long-lost gems. Our picks include the subtly clonk-influenced opener 'The Coded Message', the skewed deep electro shuffle of 'Another Way', the sci-fi techno brilliance of 'Contrapoin (First Version)' and the out-there ambient soundscape that is 'Dialectic Confusion'.

Review: FlySiifu is a new collaborative project by Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin that aims to reflect the musical community around them. This debut long player brings together the fine styles of two top rappers with extra guests including Liv.e, Foushee and $ILKMONEY backed by beats made from talents such as Madlib, Jay Versace, Ohbliv, Awhlee and Budgie. It makes for attention grabbing music that takes in raps which range from soul to punk, and at times will swell your heart with sweetness, at others get you on edge with their confrontational sound.
