Spectro 017 (heavyweight vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SPEC 017. Rel: 26 Feb 20
Electro
  1. Arsonist Recorder - "React" (6:18)
  2. Sound Synthesis - "60 Minute Bleeps" (5:38)
  3. Francois Dillinger - "Humans Among Us" (5:31)
  4. Datawave - "Genotype 1" (4:02)
Review: London-based Specimen Records presents a limited edition vinyl release, showcasing some distinct and refined electro producers. Belgium's Arsonist Recorder (ZwaarteKracht) serves up some dark electro bass in the most fierce and futuristic style on opener "React", while the daunting dystopia of Sound Synthesis' "60 Minute Bleeps" will now doubt bear comparisons to Offenbach legend Anthony Rother. On the flip, Francois Dillinger goes for a more off-kilter and experimental vibe on his fascinating contribution "Humans Among Us" and the ever impressive Gaetan V. aka Datawave lunges straight for the jugular on the nefarious beats of "Genotype 1".

Various EP (Part 2) (140 gram vinyl 12" + sticker & insert)
Cat: WSR VA2. Rel: 16 Mar 20
Techno
  1. Box 5ive - "Silicate" (6:39)
  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

  2. HMR - "Prophecy" (version) (5:55)
  3. DDOG - "A New Sound" (4:56)
  4. Infader - "Marble Madness" (6:07)
Review: Finland Freshness! Straight Up Breakbeat celebrate the heaviest of homeland hurters with this collection taken from their full compilation. All national badmen, all remarkably forward thinking in their dynamics and uncompromised weight, label boss and Finnish jungle OG Fanu takes the lead with a smoky, slower jazzy cut "Aura Eleven", newcomer HMR keeps the spacious mood going with "Prophecy" where more tidal wave breaks are soften by smoky horns and sci-fi soul. Flip for the ruffage as the mysterious DDOG gets wild on the clattering breakbeats and Infader closes with the most militant track of the record "Marble Madness". What a celebration of homegrown talent. Let's hope this becomes a series.

Deep House
  1. Ojibwa (8:37)
  2. Namid (7:11)
  3. Ojibwa (Lost Tribe dub version) (6:08)
Review: Fabrizio Fattore made a big debut on Gigi Testa's World Peace Music label and now follows it up in fine fashion. The Naples producer is part of the NEUHM camp/family/club and oversees the 30th release from Visions Recordings. He serves up two gems with "Ojibwa" being the first and making something of a deep space opus. It's widescreen, filled with evocative sci-fi imagery and channels plenty of early Detroit majesty. On "Namid", the pads disappear to infinity, the synths sing and the beats stay deep before closing things out in more tribal fashion with a "Lost Tribe Dub" of "Ojibwa".

  6. The Mouth From The South (4:52)
Review: "Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place" is the debut Dark Entries release from Fear-E aka Glasgow's Scott McKay. It comes after 10 years of hard hitting DJ sets and productions on labels like Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and is packed from to back with rib-rattling, foundation-shaking techno. There are raw jack tracks like "Acid Conversion 5", deep but frenzied bangers like "Craig's Wee Sweet Shop" and mechanical melodic explorations like "Approach It Like A '90s DnB Banger". There's even a bit of hyper speed electro in closer "The Mouth From The South" that shows another equally effective side to McKay's sound.

Review: FFF is back one again with the renegade jungle beats on 7th Storey Projects. The self-styled breakcore DJ, producer and live act from the Netherlands has been hard at it since the 90s and continues to find interesting new styles within his own sound. This latest EP will twist you inside out right from the off. Opener "Alert & Waiting" is a real synapse twitching affair that never sits still, "They Know" settles into a smoother and fluid groove while "The Way" is a busy, throwback jam with stoner chords and a hefty bottom end. Closer "So Good" is an all out assault drenched in reverb.

  4. DJ Life - "Butterfly" (5:39)
Review: 767139-01 Launching the new year with a split EP that continues the label's theme of 'Biophilia', the crew from down under Potatoheadz pursue the same vein of Aussie larrikinism as labels like THUG, Ken Oath and Nerang, while 'packing the kind of dancefloor punch that only the heart of nature can supply.' Fibre Optixxx makes his debut and takes care of the A side with the hyperaware electro breaks of "Hive Activity" and "Hibiscus", while on the flip DJ Life, who clearly has a taste for the 'acid' life: as displayed on the mind altering "Lightning Ridge" or his homage to early '90s UK IDM on "Butterfly".

  4. Displaced (5:34)
Review: The Craigie Knowes catalogue is full of mighty fine machine music, though it's only in recent times that the Scottish imprint has embraced electro. This 12" comes from one of electro's longest-serving talents, British scene stalwart Carl Finlow. As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, with Finlow breakdancing between deep, poignant electro/synth-pop fusion ("Descent"), starburst, ultra-melodious electronic bliss (the body-popping flex of "Undertones"), hard-wired mutant funk ("Cascade") and stretched-out electronic soundscapes that sit somewhere between pitched-down electro and evocative ambient techno. Finlow is a master at squeezing every last drop of emotion from his machines so it's no surprise that this EP is another emotive, mood enhancing treat.

Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Review: New York house don Fred P is back after serving up some sumptuous album sounds under his Black Jazz Consortium alias. This time he has both feet firmly in the club, rooted to the floor, and his head is lost in the groove. As ever these are chunky, hypnotic affairs with real bass weight and just enough detail to keep your mind occupied as you travel ever further down the rabbit hole. There's glitchiness in "For The Dome" and soul in "Construction", while "Alphabet City" is a real bumper and "Turn Up" brings the darkness. High quality stuff, as always.

  1. Jigoo (with Peggy Gou) (6:31)
  2. Not Sure How I Would (6:05)
  3. One Itself (5:23)
Review: Here's something of a surprise: an EP from perennial deep house and disco eccentric Maurice Fulton on Peggy Gou's hyped Gudu imprint. The Sheffield-based American joins forces with Gou on A-side "Jigoo", with the pair peppering a squelchy synth bassline and Chicago house style drums with smile-inducing piano riffs and swirling electronics. Fulton reverts to weirdo disco mode on B-side opener "Not Sure I Would", a hard-to-describe number that contains many of his usual aural flourishes (live-sounding drums, bonkers bass, Clavinets, spiraling synth sounds etc), before flitting between African style hand percussion and taut machine drums on fine percussion workout "One Itself".

  1. Funky Bijou - "Come On & Get Down" (4:49)
  2. Baker Brothers - "Snap Back" (Funky Bijou remix) (5:07)
Review: The latest missive from France's Stereophonk imprint is a heavy double header focused on the production and remix work of cut-and-paste funk and soul heroes Funky Bijou. On side A you'll find a fresh slab of P-funk flavoured B-Boy breaks from the Gallic production twosome that wraps classic early '80s rap samples and excitable synth solos around punchy electro beats and a squidgy synthesizer bassline. On the flip they give their interpretation of the Baker Brothers' 2011 track "Snap Back", re-imagining it as a Clavinet-heavy slab of hazy soul rich in blue-eyed vocals, Funkadelic style synth stabs, squelchy bass and crunchy machine drums.

  1. Gremlinz & Jesta & Kalu - "Monolith" (5:23)
  2. Friske - "City Limits" (6:04)
Review: Last year the Droogs label released a sole EP of "hard hitters for wild dancefloors" - a split 12" featuring quality cuts by Holsten and Artilect. They've repeated the trick here, offering up a pair of slammers featuring contributions from four artists. Jesta and Kalu join Gremlinz on formidably heavy A-side "Monolith", a thrusting, mind-mangling fusion of crunchy jungle breaks, warped sub-bass pulses, scattergun percussion fills and creepy sonic textures. In comparison, Friske's flipside cut "City Limits" is positively laidback, though the creepy blend of sustained chords, short vocal samples, fizzing electronic flashes, raw bass and hot-stepping D&B drums are still formidably floor-friendly.

This beefy edition packs a punch across 10 new cuts from new faces TC80, Robbenspierre, Seqta, Steve Marie, FRNK and Chaou.b, while mainstays Manipulate (aka Welwert), Bejenec, HDV & Mmmh also contribute. As ever the sounds are future fusions of breaks, electro and techno with big basslines and plenty of alien imagery. Robbenspierre's "Back To The Beat" is a particular standout with its all consuming sub bass and bumping drums, and Steve Marie's "NBT" is a throwback jam that will get hands in the air.

  1. Mighty Ryeders - "Evil Vibrations" (3:48)
  2. Family Tree - "Family Tree" (4:39)
Review: Those who've studied the history of hip-hop will know the crucial role these two tracks played in the early Bronx block party scene. Later down the line, golden era hip-hop artists extensively sampled both records, making their breaks amongst the most recognizable in rap. On the A-side you'll find The Mighty Ryeders hazy, glassy-eyed 1970s soul classic "Evil Vibrations", a cut that many will recognize from its use in De La Soul's "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays". Over on side B there's a chance to savour Family Tree's disco-funk era workout "Family Tree", a heavier affair that remains as fresh in 2020 as it did when it was first released in 1975.
