Lit Up (4:40)
Lit Up (The remix) (3:51)
Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

Roots/Lovers Rock
Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:07)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:18)
Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:10)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:23)
Review: On first spin, this 1968 rocksteady classic by Richard Ace, 'Hang 'Em High', instantly catches the ear. The electrifying combo of low-pedalled piano, bass bubble and monoized Hammond organ, all brought together under a dusty recording palette, wafts off a distinctly spaghetti-Western-dub aura. A Trojan Records favourite in its earliest heyday, it did well to launch the career of Ace, a lesser-cited Jamaican pianist whose talents nevertheless cropped up countless times across the catalogues of many of the nation's most esteemed dub imprints, including Studio One, Tiger and Coxsone. Just as it did on the original Trojan release, the song appears alongside the anthem 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black and George Ferris, also produced by Ace's confidant for 'Hang 'Em High', Harry J.

Mahmoud Ahmed - "Aynotche Terabu" (with Equators Band) (4:02)
Girma Beyene - "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" (2:24)
Review: The Afro 45's / Mr Bongo lineage has produced some of the hottest, most sizzling funk reissues from around the globe, and this tasty two-header from Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared heavily on Portland's monumental Mississippi label - and Girma Beyene, two greats of the African soul / funk heritage. Ahmed's "Aynotche Terabu" is backed by the Equators Band, and the man's voice rides like crispy waves over the dusty percussion and charging trumpets of the outfit; Beyene appears with a less moody but equally brilliant jazz-leaning piece named "Ene Negn Bay Manesh", bringing through the spirot of greats such as Mulatu and the rest of the African luminaries.

Review: Mexico-based duo Apocrifo serve up their debut single 'Indicut' with LA hip-hop and soul virtuoso Georgia Ann Muldrow on the vocal. This outfit is made up of producer Kefren Rivera and percussionist Carlos Huitro and they plenty of jazz, hip hop and electroacoustic elements into a unique sound that is exemplified here. The track is a broody, lo-fi world of sound with hip-hop beats and the yearning jazz vocals of Muldrow adding to the effect next to sombre piano chords. The instrumental strips everything back to the killer beats. This is a great first offering from this outfit who surely have plenty more to come.

Review: Blackstreet's "No Diggity" is a stone cold hip hop classic. From proper club plays to cheesy parochial nights out, it unites everyone on the dance floor and never fails to become a communal singalong. It sounds as hot now as it ever did and so makes sense for Home Hitters to serve up a new limited pressing. The b-side is from US giant Ginuwine. "Pony" was his debut single co written with Timbaland and Static Major, and it is a deep cut and libidinous tune with obvious sexual metaphors and vocodered vocal samples, a cartoon whistle slide and stop-start rhythm makes it all the more alluring.

This pair really come correct with their next-level jazz and lofi hip hop sounds, with dreamy and heady and stoned ambient pads. First up is 'How I Feel (feat Georgia Anne Muldrow)', a late night and hazy joint for smoking to, 'Babylon Rots' is another wispy, emotive and barely-there joint that makes an indelible mark and instrumentals of each are also included. Hopefully we will hear lots more from this outfit in future.

Derrick Carter - "Squaredancing" (DC Nu Vox dub) (4:59)
George Alexander - "Promised Land" (feat Big John Whitfield) (3:23)
Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

Hip Hop Saved My Life (4:01)
Hip Hop Saved My Life (Space remix) (4:25)
Review: Australia-based American Ivan "Choi" Khatchoyan made his name as the producer/arranger behind funk band The Traffic. Here he switches focus, joining forces with veteran mic man Guilty Simpson for a club-ready hip-hop outing that's every bit as good as his funk and soul productions. The A-side original version is hazy, hot and heavy, with Simpson's celebratory flows about hip-hop culture rising above a slick, '80s style backing track rich in fuzzy bass, vibrant synthesizer lines, organ stabs and some suitably tight scratches. Over on side B the "Space Remix" sees him re-invent the track as a head-nodding slab of boom-bap deepness for those who fancy lighting up and listening rather than dancing.

Review: There will always be a place for politically charged records, but lines like "The government man bring the working man down to his knees/It's time to take a stand against the government man" seem particularly relevant right now. It's the lead cry on the a-side of this new 7" from eight-piece band Christel & The Goldmaster AllStars who have a bold two piece horn section driving along this fusion of ska, reggae and rock which was first recorded in 1998 and has recently been unearthed. The flipside version has sci-fi studio effects and warped synths layered in for extra trippiness.

Funk
Christian Harmonizers - "Troubles Of The World" (3:02)
Gospel Travelers - "Jesus Is Watching You" (3:15)
Review: For those without an intimate knowledge of the private-press-dominated gospel scene of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, Greg Belson's forthcoming Divine Funk compilation of rare gospel-soul and gospel-funk offers a brilliant introduction to the sound - as does this sampler "45", one of a number being released ahead of the full collection. Christian Harmonizers' 'Troubles of the World', which sits on the A-side, is so rare and obscure that it has no Discogs entry. While that's no guarantee of quality, the track genuinely is sensational, sounding a lot like James Brown making gospel-funk rather than the sexually charged sweatiness he was known for. Turn to the B for another exceedingly hard-to-find treat: Gospel Travelers' more laidback, sweet, soulful and bluesy 'Jesus is Watching You'.

Review: Techno arriving on 7" is not an all too common sight, but why not? This release from the fledgling Dispari out of Germany suggests it works well. Cloud Management and Gavsborg take one side each, starting with the former. Their 'Tempentary Dance' pairs thudding and broken kick drum patterns with dreamy and rising synth sequences and spoken words. It's brilliantly beguiling. The flip then finds Gavsborg offering 'Did Not Make This For Jah_9' (feat Shanique Marie) which is dark and moody, dubbed out and dystopian deep techno.

That original has been sent over to Gary Davis - a long time friend of Adams - who then added his own unique stylings to it with some lush disco strings amongst other things. The stems of that version have now been sent to producer Knoe1 who flips it into two of his own new dubs which hare now served up here on a limited release in honour of the original artist. Two timeless and dubby disco gems worthy of inclusion in any proper collection.

Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's recent album, People Need People, was one of the warmest, soulful ad most accessible sets of the year, with the experienced Italian duo combining authentic jazz instrumentation and percussion with contemporary deep house and broken beat grooves. This superb seven0=-inch single showcases two of the album's undoubted gems: the impeccable deep house soul of 'People Need People' - a wonderfully sun-soaked affair in which Petrella's impassioned vocals and vibraphone solos stretch out across a tactile groove - and the downtempo, spoken word-laden hip-hop/jazz fusion of 'The Higher Love'. One of the most prolific band leaders of his time, the drum-heavy "Jive Samba" was originally released on Tico in 1968 on his Latin Percussion With Soul album. Cymande's chucklesomely titled "Bra" has been sampled by De La Soul, Raze, Chuck Chillout, Busy Bee and Rhythm Technicians, but it's Gang Starr who score the B-Side with their old school classic "Movin' On". Review: Two much over soul vocalist from the North Soul era step up on one mighty 7" here with Tyrone Davis' essential version of Clarence Carter's 'Slip Away' on the first side. It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible. Flip it over and drop that needle for a different but equal good sound, this time as Gene Chandler builds a high energy and intense vibe as he covers James Brown's huge 'There Was A Time'. They are being pressed up to 45rpm for the first time and the opening salvo is from Gianni Proia's Mondo Di Notte Oggi, a 1976 Mondo movie. Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (3:30)
Review: Fast-fingered mash-up merchant and lauded scalpel fiend DJ Soopasoul can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. In fact, we've yet to hear an edition of his "Soopastole Edits" series that doesn't include the kind of sure-fire, party-starting fare guaranteed to get any DJ out of a dancefloor hole of their own making. Review: Jalepeno Records regular DJ Soopasoul launched his amusingly titled Soopastole Edits series at the tail end of 2016, serving up a tasty seven-inch single that boasted rock solid re-rubs of a couple of party-starting classics. He's at it again on this follow-up. On the A-side, he takes his rusty scalpel to Kool & The Gang's meandering, 1970 instrumental cut "Give It Up", emphasizing the original's killer break and snaking saxophone lines. On the flip he takes a similar approach to reworking Aretha Franklin's peerless "Rock Steady", subtly tightening up the groove whilst emphasizing the bumping nature of the original beats.

Golden Flamingo Orchestra - "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" (feat Margo Williams) (4:51)
Review: This essential 45 from Japan's Octave Lab brings together two essential productions from legendary disco studio wizard Patrick Adams. On the A-side you'll find Four Below Zero's 1976 modern soul scene anthem 'My Baby's Got E.S.P' (originally simply titled 'E.S.P', fact fans), a sing-along treat that arguably counts as one of Adams' most accessible and straight-forward productions (this is not a criticism, by the way, just recognition that he made some seriously bonkers disco and boogie records over the years). Over on the flip it's all about the Peter Brown co-produced 'The Guardian Angel is Watching Over Us', a rare 1979 cut that features a sublime lead vocal from Margo Williams. While not as celebratory as the A-side, it's every bit as essential.

Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Autumn 2001 (3:38)
Review: It might be summer 2023 as we write this but it's Autumn 2021 for the Free Robots. This 7" is part of the Time Flies labels removed series where today's producers rework yesterday's classics from the world of Italian golden age soundtracks and library music. This focusses on music from a 1978 album Futuribile by Gianni Safred, a talented pianist and electronic producer. It is a woozy mix of jazz drums and hip hop rhythms with spaced out synth work and experimental effects. The flipside features the original version which is more retro-future and spaced out with less dynamic rhythms.

Love From Philly (feat Chuck Treece) (4:24)
Review: Brewerytown Records and 30amp circuit - a Philly-based not-for-profit - cues up its new Live From Philly series with a first taster from blue Philly soul maestros G.Love featuring gangster rap legend Schoolly D and punk rock and skateboard hero Chuck Treece. It is quite the line-up for one EP and the A-side here packs a punch: it's raw funk music that is run through with epic rock guitars, hard bars and plenty of dark soul. On the flip is a second version that is slightly more spacious and less densely packed but has just as much attitude and spirit.

Dare (4:09)
Review: Despite the not-so-subtle restyling of this artist's name to G'Z, it's fairly obvious to anyone with ears these tunes are by the Gorillaz. Not least because the track titles themselves remain unchanged, and so does the music. They are 'Feel Good Inc' and 'Dare' and they land on a limited edition 7" together probably for the first time. It's fair to say these are two of the most standout tunes this digital band ever put out. There is the laid-back funk of 'Dare' with a superb vocal from Shaun Ryder, and the more clipped and upbeat widescreen bounce of 'Feel Good Inc'.

Jolene (3:58)
Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Luv N Liv (Ming vs Subatomic Sound System remix)
Review: Highly limited and sonically stunning, this special 7" taken from Gabriel's Raggabass Resistance album, neither of these versions have seen the light of day before. And, according to the label, they're not likely to see it after this limited press. Gabriel's own version is authentic dub to the very core: rich organic instrumentation, a huge spacious bass and full emphasis on the groove. Dim Mak's Ming and Lee Perry's own Subatomic Sound System provide the contemporary version; squidgy, squelchy and full of surprises, it's a neat reminder of dubstep's innate funkiness. We're luvin' it!

Review: DJ and producer The Gaff hails from Canada and is well known for rocking parties around the world. He has played with Questlove, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and many more and now shows off his studio chops with two vital edits. The opener is a beautiful soul track with classic samples and carefully designed beats that suit the vibe and get you moving. Flip it over and you will find a jazzy tribute to one of hip-hop's finest from DJ Marvel. Bonus beats make it a real popper that is fun but functional and charming.

Run For My Honey (Lexx & Kejeblos remix) (3:08)
Review: For their latest trip into musical paradise, Zurich's Phantom Island crew has turned to debutants The Gagosians, a trio made up of former Soulphiction guest vocalist Suzana Rozkosny, A.C. Kupper (Guitar) and Kay-Zee (Synths). In its original form "Run For My Honey" is a slightly creepy but hugely enjoyable 4-minute chunk of no-wave wonkiness, with Rozkosny's strutting, post punk style vocals rising above lo-fi drum machine beats, surf-rock style guitar loops and elongated organ chords. On the B-side, Label co-founders Lexx and Kejeblos provide a stellar remix that drags the track further towards skewed, Balearic-minded electrofunk territory. While many of the original instrumentation remains, their body-popping beats and thickset synth bassline give the cut a whole new dancefloor dimension.

Cargo Culte (unreleased instrumental edit) (3:58)
Review: This rather tidy, limited-edition "45" offers up two previously unheard instrumental edits of stone cold classics from the bulging back catalogue of Chanson hero and sleazy but chic singer Serge Gainsbourg. Side A boasts a superb revision of "Melody Nelson", a sweeping, string-drenched affair underpinned by sweaty drumming that arguably benefits from the removal of Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin's vocals. Over on side B you'll find an equally evocative version of Beck favourite "Cargo Culte". Stripped of the original lead vocals, the track sounds like a lo-fi art-rock instrumental smothered in ghostly choral vocals and creepy, foreboding musical flourishes. Top stuff!

Sacred Love (feat Giulia La Rosa (Clapping version)) (4:19)
Review: As Galathea, Sicilian producer Massimo Napoli has been cooking up some outstanding cuts for the Italian Space Echo label over the past couple of years. Afro-Latin rhythms, soul jazz, dub and more besides all feed into his sound, which manifests perfectly on this new single fronted by vocalist Giulia La Rosa. 'Sacred Love' has a stripped-back, minimalist approach which makes it all the more potent, as Napoli exercises a restraint which creates drama and tension in the negative space around the groove. La Rosa's smouldering vocal is the icing on the cake for this deep, funky cut which will turn heads each and every time it gets dropped.

Who? (4:17)
Review: The Galaxy Sound Co's latest 7" kicks off with a remastered edit of 'Passion Play' by The Sugarhill Gang. It's a tune that was originally on their self-titled 1980 album and comes with background vocals from the superb funk and soul band Positive Force. Somehow the tune didn't make the charts at the time though it has been heavily referenced and sampled since, including by the likes of Kerri Chandler. The B-side is 'Who Is She (And What Is She to You)', a soul-jazz cover of a Bill Withers classic taken from Madelaine's only album, Who Is She, in 1978. It has a serious Chicago pedigree and great arrangements from Johnny Pate.

Review: Galaxy Sound Co. hits 40 releases deep with yet another buy-on-sight 7". This latest entry into the Sample Series kicks off with an edit of 'Lovely Is Today' by Eddie Harris from his 1968 album Plug Me In. It's steeped in delightfully conversational saxophone with rousing chords dancing beneath in a swinging 60s fashion. A real classy gem. On the flip, 'September 13' by Deodato gets reworked and is from his self-titled jazz-funk album. This one is more funky and it's led by some big, proud horn stabs and silky drum rumbles enriched with great synths. Another vital 45 from this fine label.

Searching For Soul (edit) (2:40)
Show-stopper (edit) (3:54)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co hit hard with two more edits. Both taking from triple figure sources; on the A we go back to 1968 for a chunky big funk fix on Jake Wade & The Soul Searcher's only known single "Searching For Soul" (which was famously sampled by Beyonce on "Suga Mama"). Bangini drums, horns, and a sweet bass line, the guys knew how to lay it down. Flip to the B we're blessed with the sweltering garage rock melter "Show-stopper". Powerful and sleazy; this packs a punch now more than ever, and just goes to show how much music was under the radar at that time.

Review: The long-running Galaxy Sound Co imprint has been responsible for some superb re-edits over the years, most of which are pleasingly purist in tone (I.E they're rearrangements with a few added effects but no needless new beats or cheap trickery). Their latest double-header of edits fits in this category and come courtesy of Thelonious Beats. A-side "The Vulture" is a fine chunk of string-laden Blaxploitation-era dancefloor soul that wisely loops up the drum breaks from their fine source track before introducing the music and vocals. Side B's "Get Together" is given a "Gospel Time Edit", with sweet group harmony vocals and an eyes-closed lead vocal rising above Billy Preston style organ and a jazzy funk-soul backing track.
