Review: It was in 1990 that Bill Laswell and Richard Horowitz joined forces to take care of the production of local Gnawa musicians for this Nigh Spirits Masters album. It was recorded in the medina of Marrakesh and is an absolutely essential listen for anyone with an interest in African and Middle Eastern music. The Gnawa, if you don't know, are an ethnic group in what is today called Morocco. They are descendants of West African slaves who arrived in the 16th century and were converted to Islam but still kept with them remnants of their animistic practices. They perform a complex and long ceremony to recreate the genesis of the universe and this music is a large part of it.

Review: Roger Gerressen's previous album, 2017's Sushitech-released "Monoaware", did a fine job in delivering atmospheric slabs of dancefloor hypnotism that were variously inspired by tech-house, dub techno and the deeper end of the European techno sound. "Heading In A Backwards Direction" feels like a more open and expansive take on the same basic blueprint, with Gerressen quietly slipping between beat-free dub techno soundscapes (blissful opener "Fragil (Dub)"), sun-kissed tech-house/dub techno fusion (the ear-pleasing "Draxis"), deep house inspired dancefloor warmth ("Cerendipity"), heavier peak-time workouts (bass-heavy tech-house jack track "Don't Be Neutron"), crackling minimalism ("Continued Momentum") and hushed, sub-heavy goodness (closing cut "Holding Thoughts"). It all adds up to another impressively atmospheric excursion.

Review: Marie Ulven finally unveils her debut album, five years after she first won us over with 'I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend', an introverted slice of indie pop that rode the wave of deeply personal and quirky coming-of-age artists at the time. Since then, asking 'do you like Girl In Red' became a kind of code for 'are you gay?', with subsequent songs tackling issues around sexuality, gender and identity head on.
So this long form outing comes with weighty expectations, and it doesn't disappoint. With lyrics that hold little back, from accusing a partner of cheating by asking if they, and their infidel mate, came, through to 'Serotonin''s focus on the numbness and emptiness that can swallow us whole, there is plenty that will resonate irrespective of your age. Review: Felipe Gordon kicks off the new Wide Awake album with Errare Humanum Est, a second conceptual album that runs a gamut of deep house sounds. The title comes from the Latin proverb 'To err is human' which is an inspiration for Gordon who leaves the mistakes in his music. It was written in his home studio in Bogota at the end of 2022 and the start of 2023 and finds him re-visit some forgotten musical sketches to rework them and cook up a long and absorbing listen that really makes use of the long player format.

Review: Legendary jazz man and truly free spirited musical maestro Don Cherry joined up with Swiss pianist and composer George Gruntz and his group in Tunisia and Germany in May and September 1969 to record this. Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.

Review: Brion Gysin was a true original who left his mark on modern culture when he introduced William Burroughs to the cut-up technique, but he also recorded a swathe of experimental, funk-fuelled releases including the 1983 single 'Kick/Junk'. That single has been expanded into this album for Wewantsounds, which features Don Cherry's trumpet work on 'Kick' amongst many other talented players. It's a freewheeling listen which takes its inspiration from many places, finding space for tender folk experimentation with an African twist on 'All Those Years' and embraces jazz as a vessel for sonic and rhythmic exploration when the moment calls for it.

Review: The Warm World Of Joao Gilberto from 1963 welcomes you deep into the iconic sounds of the so-called Godfather of bossa nova. Brazilian legend Joao pretty much invented the sound and this collection is a comprehensive selection of some of his most pivotal works from 1958 to 1961. While listening you can hear a nascent bossa sound emerging from the speakers as the formerly rare unknown and then late 20-something explored new rhythms and rich harmonies that make for mesmerising and addictive listening. The album is something of a grail so snap up this reissue while you can.
