Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Mahmoud Ahmed - "Aynotche Terabu" (with Equators Band) (4:02)
Girma Beyene - "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" (2:24)
Review: The Afro 45's / Mr Bongo lineage has produced some of the hottest, most sizzling funk reissues from around the globe, and this tasty two-header from Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared heavily on Portland's monumental Mississippi label - and Girma Beyene, two greats of the African soul / funk heritage. Ahmed's "Aynotche Terabu" is backed by the Equators Band, and the man's voice rides like crispy waves over the dusty percussion and charging trumpets of the outfit; Beyene appears with a less moody but equally brilliant jazz-leaning piece named "Ene Negn Bay Manesh", bringing through the spirot of greats such as Mulatu and the rest of the African luminaries.

Review: Mexico-based duo Apocrifo serve up their debut single 'Indicut' with LA hip-hop and soul virtuoso Georgia Ann Muldrow on the vocal. This outfit is made up of producer Kefren Rivera and percussionist Carlos Huitro and they plenty of jazz, hip hop and electroacoustic elements into a unique sound that is exemplified here. The track is a broody, lo-fi world of sound with hip-hop beats and the yearning jazz vocals of Muldrow adding to the effect next to sombre piano chords. The instrumental strips everything back to the killer beats. This is a great first offering from this outfit who surely have plenty more to come.

This pair really come correct with their next-level jazz and lofi hip hop sounds, with dreamy and heady and stoned ambient pads. First up is 'How I Feel (feat Georgia Anne Muldrow)', a late night and hazy joint for smoking to, 'Babylon Rots' is another wispy, emotive and barely-there joint that makes an indelible mark and instrumentals of each are also included. Love From Philly (feat Chuck Treece) (4:24)
Review: Brewerytown Records and 30amp circuit - a Philly-based not-for-profit - cues up its new Live From Philly series with a first taster from blue Philly soul maestros G.Love featuring gangster rap legend Schoolly D and punk rock and skateboard hero Chuck Treece. It is quite the line-up for one EP and the A-side here packs a punch: it's raw funk music that is run through with epic rock guitars, hard bars and plenty of dark soul. On the flip is a second version that is slightly more spacious and less densely packed but has just as much attitude and spirit.

Review: London-based G Markus' credentials include productions on Soul Clap Records, Exploited, Roots For Bloom, Music For Freaks and Monologues. This will be the sixth edition of his own G-Edits series, where he serves up a familiar stateside groove that has been respectfully respliced on "Red E" - think classic Strictly Rhythm or Catch from the early '90s. On the flip, it's more of a remix on the sexy late-night trip "Cum Thru" that will give y'all a nice fix of deepness with its bouncy bassline and soulful vocals. More surefire grooves from the lesser known alias of Ben Gomori.

Jolene (3:58)
Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Grandi Loba (Vahagn remix)
Review: For their latest vinyl release, the TINK! Music label looks to Lisbon and the enigmatic duo Gatupreto, whose Modo Di Trabadja 12" betrays all manner of influences that seep beyond the realm of house music. In their own words, "the art Gatupreto generates is simple, unpretentious and sincere, it owes to the classic rave vibe as much as to the rawness of hip hop as much to the sunset of Cape Verde as to the sunrise of the Lisbon riverside." This manifests itself in two understandably diverse productions from Gatupreto with the heavily percussive workout of Vahagn's closing remix of "Grandi Loba" of particular note.

Review: The first official LP from Geinst comes by way of a collaboration with lesser-known yet no less talented production god Inerit. Together, they bring generative techno pops and chops via modular ambient to the former's self-titled imprint. 3 years in the making, 'Geinst' is the result of frank conversations about how to effectively collaborate. A merger of hazy, breathily grand proportions, we're most taken by the cyberpunkish post-watery chords of 'Neocitizen' and the clicking factoryscapes of 'A(R)' - both of which sound like limitless traversals of dubious eco-cities.

Still as ahead of their time as they were almost 25 years ago, "The Beginning" is wildly off grid, loose and insanely funky while the rest of the EP gradually morphs into breath taking technoid experiments "Floating" takes a high NRG feel with its looping insistency "Klonopin" and its edited sibling "Klonopinless" offer a full physical sensation with their brazen hypnotic loopiness. Review: Fresh from 1968, this Dionne Warwick-affiliated double-sided one-off by The Gentlemen Four returns in its original glory courtesy of Soul 7 and Jazzman. "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" is a straight-up northern soul stomper with big drums, powerful momentum and emphatic harmonies. Looking for a more tender moment? Flip for the show-stopped ballad "It Won't Hurt" where the harmonies play an even more pivotal role in the dynamic. Nothing hurts with records like this.

Their eponymously titled sophomore effort here on The Trilogy Tapes features four experimental cuts, all said to be improvised live-to-tape. Easing (version) (6:49)
Review: George and Glen Miller are undoubtedly best known for their West End Records released 1982 boogie-soul classic "Touch Your Life". They released plenty of other records that flitted between soca, reggae, disco, and - in the latter stages of their career - electrofunk. "Easing", which appeared at some point at the turn of the '80s on London label Third World, remains one of their most potent releases - and, in its original form at least, formidably hard to find. This Soundway reissue wisely replicates the track list of the original release, beginning with the title track - a deliciously percussive, musically intricate chunk of peak-time disco smothered in sharp, Afro-funk style horns and George and Glen Miller's lilting reggae-soul style vocals. The flipside "Version" strips out the vocals, allowing listeners to hear in greater detail the pair's impeccable arrangements and instrumentations (particularly the fine orchestration and rich groove).

Now Thank You has put together this 12" package with three different versions of 'Don't Leave Me Alone.' The original dropped in 1987 and was an instant euro-pop classic. Review: Here's a cut which might well break out some misty-eyed reminiscence for those who were locked into the UK's rare groove and jazzdance scenes in the late 80s. Cheryl Glasgow's career was brief, but she gifted us two wonderful singles, and it's the second of those Numero have opted to reissue right here. 'Glued To The Spot' has that humid, rhythmic quality which would have gone down a storm with the Balearic set, not least with the attendant club and instrumental mixes on the original 12", but for our money it's Glasgow's understated voice, which lands somewhere between Shara Nelson and Sade, which gives the track its magic.

Review: Also known as the 313 Acid Queen, Rebecca Goldberg has been firing out some seriously feisty, hard-edged techno in the past five years. Most of it has come out on her hometown label Detroit Underground, but now she links up with Dutch label PHOQ U PROGRAMMEN to offer her gnarly take on acid techno for all those who can't get enough of the 303. 'Automated' is slamming in its original version, matching jackhammer beats with trippy synth strafing, but Mark Broom is on hand to simmer it into a lean and mean wormhole cut in his inimitable style. 'Elevated' whips up an acid storm, 'Staying On' heads into tensely psychoactive territory and 'Linear Motion' drops down into a more rubbery kind of squelch 'n' jack for the experimental crowd.

On the A-side you'll find Golden Boys' 1975 gem 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)', an irresistible slab of full-throttle, orchestra-sporting, Hammond-heavy samba-funk marked out by strong group vocals and some superb musical arrangements. Review: Sleeper man Alex Fox debuted the GRAMZ alias earlier in the year via a two-track 12" on Sentry Records built around paranoid sonic textures, serious bass-weight and rolling 140 BPM beats. For this 10" outing on Crucial, Fox has taken a deeper approach, ratcheting up the smoky atmosphere while retaining sizeable low-end pressure. "Joken" and flipside "Get Them Bags" are hazy, ultra-deep dubstep workouts, with both doffing a cap towards hip-hop and grime (check out the manipulated MC vocal samples on the latter, in particular), as well as the crackling sonic textures of Burial. "Joken" rolls along nicely while remaining pleasingly subdued, while "Get Them Bags" has a little more sonic strut. Both, though, are excellent.

When The Morning Comes has done a quick job of turning heads by setting out a nice atmospheric deep house sound with its first EP, and now a second effort does the same. This one comes from Grant who lays out an elegant vision across four cuts. 'Opportunity' kicks off with analogue grooves laid down beneath warming pads and loose piano chords. 'Tangible Steps' picks up the pace with a more bristling mix of drums, perc and raw Chicago claps and onto the flip, things get deep once more with the horizontal vibes of 'Golden Wisdom' and more wispy cosmic pads of 'Foward Motion Dub.' Brashly titled "Don't Mess with GR" may be, but this Russian quartet always prefer to let their musicianship do the talking and you can't fault the Great Revivers funk here as three odd minutes of prime dirtiness unfolds driven by a killer drum beat. It's complemented well by the more uptempo jam that is "Hard Way To Go" and lays down a marker for what to expect from the Great Revivers forthcoming album.

Pain In My Heart (Meridian Brothers remix) (4:12)
Review: After four years away from the label, Tomasz Guiddo returns to Compost Disco with a cut that defies easy categorization. It features lead vocals from Louie Austin, a classic, 'Rat Pack' style crooner who first collaborated with Guiddo back in 2016. 'Pain My Heart' combines squelchy, slow-motion grooves (complete with lo-fi, Latin-tinged drum machine beats), undeniably Balearic musical flourishes (including Spanish guitar solos and dreamy chords), and Austin's classy, emotive lead vocals. Quite where it sits is open to debate, but it's an immaculately executed and memorable song. Soundway sorts Meridian Brothers provide a suitably humid remix, adding Austin's weary vocals to loose-limbed Latin beats, deep bass and suitably tropical guitar licks. It's a revelatory revision and one of the strongest remixes we've heard so far this year.

Guux naturally takes centre stage on vocal opener 'African Blood Defender', a jaunty and attractive number in which stirring synth strings and jangling piano stabs rise above a sturdy riddim. Mr Ites delivers two heavier, echo-laden dub revisions, with the weighty-but-melodious 'Afrikan Raw Defender' being our pick of the pair. Over on the flip, legendary Jamaican toaster Junior Dread lends a hand on 'This Road', which is then stripped-back and beefed up for the dance by Mr Ites on the equally impressive 'Dub Road' and 'Raw Road' versions.

"Everything You Do, You Do For Yourself" is a driving Highlife rhythm and his only song having a phrase in English. "Estre" features one of the leading voices of Frafra-Gospel named Florence Adooni. She interweaves perfectly with the horn arrangements by Weissenfeldt and the drummer. Washington's Hailu Mergia, San Francisco's Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids and the legendary Scandinavian producer Jimi Tenor have also released on the label over the last year too.

Review: Big Crown does it again here with another magical 7" this time from Dave Guy, who has contributed to plenty of this label but only now makes his solo debut. It finds him working with label regulars Homer Steinweiss & Nick Movshon, who take care of production and play on the recordings. 'Footwork' is a vibrant fusion of soul, funk, and jazz that, as a trumpeter for the renowned band The Dap-Kings, brings his distinctive style to the forefront and infuses each track with infectious energy and groove. Dynamic horn arrangements, tight rhythms, and soulful melodies all make this one special and show just how skilled a musician Guy is, and apparently, there is plenty more to come.

Review: A new label out of Mexico, Short Attention Records launches its second release with a five track offering of proper melodic house & techno from Hector Ram with the word 'quality' stamped large upon them. 'Midnight Sounds' starts things off with the grand rhythmically-building 'Midnight Sounds', almost New Order-esque at times. 'For Our Small Parties' follows, old skool again in flavour, blending subtly employed breaks and a sturdy house framework, then 'Dear Dancefloor', probably the gentlest and most fragile effort here, opens side two. 'On The Road' boasts a more electro feel and Orbital-esque synths, and is deemed worthy of a second airing via a nicely throbbing remix from Detroit's Generation Next closing proceedings.

Review: Dobro is a house and disco edits label run by Belarusian DJ/producer Iner out of St Petersburg. For its fifth release, it's another various artists affair featuring a whopping six tracks with appearances from I Gemin on the dusty, boompty and off-kilter 'I Like 2 Party', Paul Rudder & OUI go ultra deep in the tradition of the Three Chairs sound on the emotive 'In The Sky For Our Love', while Bendrik serves up the mandatory late night mood music vibes on 'Chat House' and Swales provides the banger on the funky and tough rolling 'Blue Skies'.

Rex Ilusivii & Goran Vejvoda & Milan Mladenovic - "Track 1" (3:40)
CHBB - "NBKE" (4:45)
Review: Versatile's new Uprooted project, masterminded by serial curator and long-time label contributor Vidal Benjamin, has an intriguing concept. It focuses on the 'duality' of musicians who grow up in one place, then move to another and absorb that culture. The two tracks on release number one were picked by Vladimir Ikovic, who has selected a track a piece from Belgrade, the city of his birth, and Dusseldorf, his current home. On the Serbian side, he offers up 'Track 1' by Rex Ilusivii, Goran Vejvoda and Milan Mladenovic, a trippy, slow-motion slab of dubbed-out, Eno-influenced slab of post-punk experimentalism from 1984. Flip for some rough, powerful, mind-mangling proto-techno from 1981: the stylish, lo-fi and pleasingly intense 'NBKE' by CHBB. Inspired obscurities that are well worth a listen.

Review: Luv Shack is a little old place where good-time disco sounds never stop flowing. The Disco Biscuits series from the label is now up to the third volume and it's as crucial as the first two. Lee Stevens gets it going with 'Theme For Disco Biscuits' which is a contemporary take on a classic Italo stomper. Endrik Schroder's 'Infinity' is a glossy synth-heavy disco made with 80s hi-energy in mind. 'One Of A Kind' on the flip then slows down with a warm house chug and Golden Boogie Connection keeps it horizontal with 'Dull Grey', topped off with some nice acid.

Review: Ghetts is undoubtedly amongst the top tier of British MCs - a grime legend famed for being a genuinely dextrous lyricist. As On Purpose, With Purpose proves, he's also an artist whose output has evolved considerably since he emerged in the late 2000s. While his raps and rhymes are as sharp as ever, the beats he's working with are far more diverse, polished and - whisper it quietly - deeper than many may expect. For proof, check the r&b and hip-hop-soul influenced of 'Double Standards (featuring Sampha)', the sub-heavy punchiness of 'Laps (featuring Moonchild Sanelly), and the jazzy, head-nodding hip-hop warmth of 'Twin Sisters (featuring Skrapz)'. Throw in nods to Afrobeats and Amapiano, and you've got a set that will surely feature in many 'best of 2024' lists later in the year.

Review: Now happily back in business following drummer Joe Seward's long recovery from a near-fatal accident in 2018, Oxford four-piece Glass Animals return with what could be their most colourful, vibrant and ear-catching album to date. Musically, it's all effervescent, synthesizer-driven production, dreamy vocal arrangements, neon-lit R&B sounds and hip-hop inspired beats, yet the songs are deeply personal, with front man Dave Bayley (assisted on standout "Tokyo Drifting" by rapper Denzel Curry) offering autobiographical lyrics for the very first time. It's a great combination, all told, and one that makes "Dreamland" really sparkle.

Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

Review: Rubicon marks the first physical edition of Galcher Lustwerk's driving-themed alias, Road Hog. Collecting tracks from seven releases spanning from 2014 to 2021, Rubicon serves as the project's Greatest Hits (for now). Including tracks from the Cleveland-dedicated album 'Tour De Hog' as well as the sharp toothed 'Spares' and 'More Spares' the pithy 'Haul Ass' plus some cinematic favorites from 'DWB' and 'On The Lam'. Originally meant to be digital only and listened to while driving, demand for certain tunes to be pressed to vinyl has risen with each release. From the Road to the Club, Lustwerk's got you covered.
