Review: Two titans of African music come together for a collaboration that will sadly never be repeated after the passing of the late Hugh Masekela. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way. Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field.

Review: Made up of seasoned veterans of the Washington D.C. scene, and fronted by Chris MacKaye (younger brother of Fugazi and Minor Threat mastermind, Ian, as well as the bowed head that adorns the latter's iconic album cover), Hammered Hulls are set to unveil their highly anticipated debut full-length, 'Careening'. Released through legendary MacKaye founded label, Dischord; the project is likely to be the final work recorded and mixed at famed studio, Inner Ear, which shut down at the end of last year. Engineered by studio owner Don Zientara, produced by Ian MacKaye, and sporting an overwhelming essay of praise from Rites Of Spring and Fugazi alumni, Guy Picciotto; it's hard to shake the sense of the punk stars aligning to offer a unique, timely project crafted by the hands that laid the integral foundations over four decades ago.

Review: A couple of years ago, Super Disco Edits released the debut single from Buddy Hank & The Shine Band, East Orange New Jersey-based band who were briefly active in the early 1980s. Here they go one step further, delivering a first full-length full of tracks recorded way back in 1981. Immaculately mastered from the original studio tapes, "Dust To Diamonds" is as good a boogie-era album as you're likely to hear. Rich in slap bass, soulful vocals, good-time grooves, jazz-funk flourishes and colourful synthesizer lines, the eight tracks flit between sugary warmth and effervescent dancefloor heat. In other words, this is genuine buried treasure for DJs who take disco and boogie seriously.

The Soulful Saints are a skilled bunch of musicians who have played live with some of the very best from the Wu Tang Clan to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and they are a perfect accompaniment to Bobby Harden's buttery vocals. Harden has earned his chops in The Blues Brothers since 2012, getting the nod from Stax legend Eddie Floyd who has passed the torch to this vital soul man. On this album Harden and his band run the gamut across an array of gorgeous soul sounds packed with love, big hooks and the sort of vocals that you will be singing along to for a long time. This is the coloured vinyl edition of this triumph of a record.

Review: French-German duo Nina Harker are made up of Apolline Schoser and Nocola Henry, who have been testing at the fringes of folk across intermittent albums with an introverted brilliance about them. Now they make a cosy home on Aguirre Records with this extended excursion into their strange sound world, where skewed finger picking and disembodied vocal snatches lope around in a distorted soup, only for Schoser's singing to cut through the mix and bring your focus into a re-calibrated present. It's considered chaos played out with patience, constantly delivering the unexpected and leaving a strong impression from its very first notes to the last.

Review: The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound, to give its full title, is one of the less talked-about Jon Hassell albums, but it's just as worthy of celebration. The Fourth World pioneer and raga trumpeter had established his fundamental sound by the late 80s, and this album works so brilliantly as a demonstration of that sound in action. Hassell's distinctive treated trumpet remains the central focus, while undulating rhythms and atmospheres unfurl around it as we're quickly buffeted away to strange and distant places. The mood Hassell captured on his finest works is a rare and unique thing - intense and subtle, ominous and calming, mysterious and yet so immediately appealing.

Review: San Antonio, Texas based blackened doom-death hybridizers, Haunter, return with their much anticipated, decimating third full-length, Discarnate Ails. The follow up to 2019's exceptional Sacramental Death Qualia, sees a further eschewing of their screamo origins in favour of gargantuan, esoteric, depressive opus-like pieces that transcend genre and spectacle in favour of cathartic bombast.

Review: In light of the first new Haxan Cloak material in a good ten years, we're being gifted the opportunity to comb back through Bobby Krlic's back catalogue and fill in any missing pieces. Krlic is reissuing his back catalogue on his own label, Archaic Devices, which is a fine reminder to drift into the poised majesty of his debut album. Building on the promise of the earlier EPs Observatory and the limited CDr from 2009, this was when we started to comprehend the full scope of Krlic's charged world building. Roundly defined by his tense violin and cello cast in solemn spatial chambers, this album has lost none of its power in the decade since its release.

Review: Ten years on, Excavation has lost none of its power. It's a fitting time to reflect on the last The Haxan Cloak album as we prepare to digest the first new material from Bobby Krlic since, and a return into the complex folds of this album are more than enough to get us excited. Originally released on Tri Angle, now Krlic is putting the album out on his own Archaic Devices and putting paid to some of the astronomical second hand prices. Draped in finely textured, gauzy atmospherics and deathly rhythm pulses, this is a journey into the depths of imagination, where industrial, ambient and the avant-garde collide and test your mettle, but with its clear-sighted intentions it's also an album you can latch onto and continually draw more understanding from. A modern masterpiece, to be sure.

Review: Composer and conductor Miho Hazama celebrates ten years of her respected M Unit project with an all new album performed by it. Beyond Orbits is a vibrant work that is also a fine testament to her endless creativity within the world of jazz. In the last decade she has played all over the world but the album was written in the confines of her flat during the pandemic in New York. But you wouldn't know it because like Afro-Futurists before her she looked outwards to the stars for inspiration. Effectually the album pays homage to the captivating wonders of the exoplanetary realm in majestic fashion.

Review: Vienna's Florian Stoffelbauer is the man behind the Heap alias. He uses it sporadically to drop cultured deep techno on labels like Mechatronica and Neubau and has done for around six years now. This new long player is the first we have heard from him in almost three years but it has been worth the wait. False Hope on Canadian label Isla is slow and snaking techno with icy atmospheres and a sleek sense of futurism. It's stylish in design and heady in mood with standouts like 'Inner Peace' drawing you into a world of intrigue and mystery. The title track brings lush cosmic melodies over gentle kick patterns and somehow soothes the mind, body and soul. Nice work indeed.

Review: Darryl Bunch Jnr has been operating in the Chicago footwork scene as Heavee for some time now, most notably collaborating with the legendary DJ Rashad as well as luminaries like Zora Jones and Sinjin Hawke. Following up on the promise of his Audio Assault EP for Hyperdub a couple of years ago, Bunch Jnr comes good with an album that broadens his palette without losing focus on the rhythmically intriguing, uptempo framework of footwork. Skittering beats and staggered vocal samples abound, but there's also some soulful synth work and artful sound design which nudge this work into its own sphere, upholding footwork's instinct for innovation and deepening the Heavee creative stamp in the process.

Review: Given the not-so-subtle reference to seminal 1960 French New Wave movie A Bout De Souffle (Breathless), you could be forgiven for thinking this retrospective compilation was from the Marseille power-metal outfit, Heavenly. It's not, and instead shines a light on the jangly indie pop of Oxfordshire, UK outfit, Heavenly.

Emerging from the ashes of Talulah Gosh, and eventually evolving into Marine Research following the death of Mathew Fletcher in 1996, for the uninitiated, think poetic lyrical delivery with punchy observational lines and stressed but harmonious guitar riffs that envelop the listener, combining to define a sonic space that's somewhere between Trash Kit, Garbage and Hinds, only with a thick sugar coating. Releasing just four albums in their time, what's here is a great insight into their catalogue and a good jumping off point for what happened before, and next.

Review: Moiety is a great example of what makes Helios so special as an artist. The ambient hero wrote at the time of its original release that he had made it "as a gift", explaining "it is my thanks to you for the support I've received over the years." That was 2012, and it's taken another decade for the producer to make what was a limited edition freebie more widely available, a decision that's more than understandable.

Having made ambient greatness since 2004, there's plenty in the Keith Kenniff back catalogue that we would recommended exploring, but this outing is easily up there with the most beautiful and emotive. Focusing on refrain-based tracks, it's a staggering example of how gradual developments of notes and tonality can be truly transportive. So sit back, close your eyes, and allow these eight pieces to take you where they want.

Released posthumously, this album offers a superb glimpse into his unparalleled talent and stage presence. From the iconic riff of 'Purple Haze' to the soulful improvisations elsewhere, each track showcases Hendrix's innovative guitar techniques and charismatic vocals. Review: Almost 20 years have passed since Australian duo's debut LP Alleys To Valleys landed in our collections. Now we see these valleys from the flip perspective as they creatively scale us to the very summit of Mirror Mountain, their most ambitious body of work so far. Sitting somewhere between Booka Shade, Four Tet and Chemical Brothers, there's a vibrancy and energy that they've only ever hinted at before. From the soaring euphoria of 'Promises' to the emotional, cinematic breaks of 'Golden Hour' and the gentle lament of 'Tides Of Time', the pair weave a beguiling narrative through their work that really brings the album to life. Stunning.

Review: When it comes to working with voice and voice alone there's few artists out there that can really dissociate speech and its connection with the brain. Proto is the third full-length album by composer and sound artist Holly Herndon, and it brings out on onslaught of sounds that will keep you rooted in your seat. Opener "Birth" for example sounds something like a poor soul struggling with the deepest of emotions and most spellbinding of speech impediments. The music embraces rave and extreme cut up techniques with bass music and a myriad of experimental beats, ideas and philosophy. Much like SOPHIE's music there are so many reference points to discover; with our best comparisons being Enya, Laurie Anderson's "O Superman" and the cluster of music coming out of experimental label PAN. The album also features a collaboration with Planet Mu's Jlin with the gnawing beatboxes of "Godmother". What a trip to redefine what we might one day call 'prototypical' - but for now, take a deep breath and dive into the multi-dimensional abyss.

And this is one such case as the project is centered around 99-year-old Iboja Wandall-Holm who sings about memories from her childhood growing up in Eastern Europe. The record plays out like a musical encounter where the songs are worked into magical forms by Danish musician Mikkel Hess and other members of his Hess Is More band with extra collaborative input from label head and producer Kenneth Bager.

It is the only album from this outfit and it was once reissued on CD in 2004 but never before on vinyl. Musically it blends reggae, soul and jazz-funk into gloriously musical tracks with lavish arrangements and a golden soul for late-night lounge spaces. At times romantic, at others playful, it's as likely to be heard at a sundown session on the beach in Ibiza as it is at a listening bar in London or a street party in Leeds.

Review: The spirit of ghetto tech looms large over this full length offering from duo Hi Tech, surfacing on Omar S' FXHE label. That said, the usual straight forward pumped up booty bouncing beats that the genre flaunts are left well behind by an eclectic and well constructed trip across the rhythmic spectrum. 'Milf Milo' is one of the more regular sounding jams, riding a relatively conventional house/garage production, but elsewhere elements of trap, hip-hop, techno, footwork and electro all influence the genuinely innovative and original frameworks. Even better, the cleverness of the arrangements doesn't lessen the alarmingly thuggish timestretched and over-autotuned vocals, giving us the best of both worlds.

Review: Is there a more vital label in all of underground electronic music than FXHE? It never ceases to amaze us how Omar S manages to put out so much music of such high quality, mostly of his own making, but also from plenty of satellite producers he lures under his wing. This time we're treated to a rare full-length from someone other than the boss as the Motor City's Hi Tech duo step up with a raw ghettotech workout. These are sleazy tracks with raw production, bumping basslines, high-speed rhythms and plenty of rapped vocals packed with juke and footwork attitude.

Review: Thievery Corporation co-founder Eric Hilton is adept at many different produciton styles and he calls on most of them on this new Present Past & Future EP for Montserrat House. First up is a future jazz and jungle fusion with steamy sax motifs drifting up high over the slick drums. The tempo drops to nothing on the lush downtempo sounds of 'Put Em' Down' and 'Something For Byrd' (feat Brian Jackson) is a star-gazing after dark masterclass with wispy synths and soulful vocals. There is squelchy synth funk on 'E Plays It Cool', blissed out trip hop on 'Cold Gemini' and another 90s era acid jazz and breaks fusion to finish with 'Mind Archelogy' (feat Brian Falkowski).

Review: Thievery Corporation veteran Eric Hilton is on a roll with his Montserrat House label, operating out of DC and adding new layers to his considerable legacy in downtempo sounds. As was teased by the 'Amor Astral' single from 2023, this new album finds Hilton working closely with long time Thievery collaborator, Argentinian singer Natalia Clavier. Her coolly soulful tone hovers over the buttery funk jams Hilton lays down, where the drums are tight and crisp and the basslines wrap themselves around the groove with snake-like grip, all the better to sink into when you need a little chill-out time from a certified master of the art.

Review: Bristol-based Hippo Sound System has a sound that draws on a wide sphere of reference from Afro to downtempo, tropicalia to dub. Origins in their debut album and comes deep in sound system culture but laden with evocative details that ate you away from the here and now to a humid jungle clearing full of ancestral rhythms, jazz freedom and contemporary bass music. It's a colourful and psychedelic listen that fuses the traditional and ritualistic with the futuristic and physical. Great drops, hooky melodies and a global feel make this one of the most unique albums you will have heard in some time.

Review: It's album number nine from The Hold Steady, who, as it happens, marked 20 years as a band with this release (or at least the anniversary roughly coincided with the LP landing in stores). During that time, these masters of rough and tumble, near-barroom rock for and by the people, have climbed the ladder of musical fame, enjoyed time in a well-deserved limelight, and then returned to the underground from whence they came.
Understanding that journey is important. Achieving heights of mainstream success a decade or so ago, it's not that the half-spoken word vocal delivery of frontman Craig Finn has waned in impact or emotional resonance. Nor has the timeless, brass and piano hued rock & roll instrumentation gone stale. Instead, their relentless consistency means we almost take the quality of every song and record for granted, leaving die hard fans to carry the torch. Perhaps now is the time to correct that.

Review: British ambient producer Jimmy Billingham aka HOLOVR has previously flaunted his wares on respected imprints such as Opal Tapes, Firecracker and Indole where he presented the brilliant Line Of Flight LP last year. "Into Light" or "Apparent Motion" could pass for The Orb or even CTI's early ambient electronica experiments, both awash in soothing analogue pads, hypnotic bleeps and faint 303 acid flourishes. On the flip, there's more quality to be found on the cosmic journey "Involution" that's full of vintage analogue synth flair, screeching and squealing all over the place; it's pure bliss.

Review: Legendary reggae vocalist John Holt was such a powerful and potent role on the mic that his 1000 Volts Of Holt album title is a perfect summation of what he brought. It is no wonder then that the Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter can be heard on tons of classic tunes and records across the seventies. For the fascinating Peacemaker, he worked with plenty of talented musicians (Sly and Robbie and Lindel Lewis were amongst them) and recorded across Jamaica and the UK. The results take in love-struck ballads, plenty of direct social commentaries and timeless reggae rollers.

Review: Austin-based psychedelic rockers Holy Wave are back with their sixth studio album following 2020's Interloper. If you're already hip to their sound you won't need any head re-adjustment to get into the opening title track on Five of Cups - it's a dreamy yet powerful suite of ascending riffs and hypnotic diversions shot through with wistful intrigue. The gauze maintains as the album unwinds, although there are hidden depths to be explored in the second half as Mexican psych duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete lend their touch to 'The Darkest Timeline' and Estrella Del Sol feeds into soaring closer 'Happier'.

Review: After the success of "Helium", 2019's long-form from Montreal singer, songwriter and multi-instrumental hypnagogic pop soloist Homeshake, we are now presented with a slew of top drawer remixes from a selection of unarguably varied producers. Opening with Ciel's Daylight Savings Mix of "All Night Long", the trippy, dreamy garage effort sets the bar high. Similar broken joys can be found in the bass-R&B hybrid "Like Mariah", as re-read by Jessy Lanza, not to mention Cecile Believe's take on "Another Thing", with its extended build and eventual release into rolling, acid euphoria. More subdued and scatty, "Other Than", reworked by TAYE/PAL, might invoke the likes of DNTEL to some, while disco don Project Pablo delivers the finest dancefloor moment with a two-stepping vocal anthem-in-the-making - that re-rub of "Just Like My".

Review: Two years on from the release of his brilliant third album "Parallels", dark-wave and synth-wave explorer Hord returns to Avant with an equally impressive sequel. Rich in "Bladerunner"-era Vangelis synth sounds, clandestine grooves, moody chords, distant vocals and druggy arpeggio lines, the album is an altogether more atmospheric, tuneful and ethereal affair than some of the producer's previous outings. The overall mood is bittersweet and melancholic, but that's no bad thing. To our ears, it's the most impressively emotive Hord release to date, and that's reason enough for further exploration.

Review: What's your favourite Whitney tune and why is it all of them? Famously known as The Voice for the incredible range and emotion she could deliver on the mic the late great Whitney was a pioneering artist who always wanted to do more than the pop hits her label often tried to push on her. That's evident when you look at how her sound changed over the years from album to album. I'm Your Baby Tonight came in the middle of her career in 1990 and has since been certified quadruple platinum in the US. It is packed with funk, dance-pop delights and emotive ballads plus a fine collar with Stevie Wonder.

Review: Cork based musician Elaine Howley is part of many locally successful bands including The Altered Hours and Crevice, but this is her debut solo venture. The Distance Between Heart And Mouth is the haunting final culmination of an audio diary first noted down on a four-track tape recorder, later translated into gorgeous musical form. Glitchy darkwave and boxy dream pop tempered by ghostly vestiges of goth are among its sonics, as the album slinks through nine synthy meditations on intimacy, communication and ritual.

It comes after she's been involved with several other projects and offers a fragile and delicate mix of subtle instrumentation and rich voice textures imbued with an array of lovely field recordings. These are superbly patient and slow-burn tracks that really have a cathartic effect as nature and natural sounds permeate each composition. The melodies take your mind away as the freely structured, minimal arrangements really make you take note.

These days he releases on iDEAL, Fit Sound, Borft and Klasse Wrecks, but he cut his techno teeth on labels like Hybrid, Svek and H. Productions. Clad in artwork details by Swedish graffiti legend Nug, Wormhole Of Time comprises unreleased cuts and long out-of-print jams spanning many of Huhta's aliases. The release also comes with a zine featuring photographs and an interview reflecting on Huhta's multifarious life in music.

Review: 30 years after ditching the Humanoid alias in order to form Future Sound Of London with Garry Cobain, Brian Dougans has decided to resurrect his rave-era solo project. The result is "Built By Humanoid", a delightfully skittish, off-kilter album of raw, ragged and mind-altering cuts whose wayward, out-there electronics were partially created using two custom-built synthesizers that Dougans co-designed. The resultant album is breathlessly brilliant and magnificently mind-mangling, with the veteran producer conjuring up cuts that giddily join the dots between Aphex Twin's most intense moments, the acid-fired "Braindance" of Ceephax Acid Crew, the doom-laden ambient and IDM oddness of Future Sound Of London and the sweaty breakbeat rush of early UK hardcore.

Plenty of the guests helped bring him rightful acclaim and this collection has all the rare highlights with Bonny Gayle, The Abyssinians, Junior Murvin, Max Romeo and more all making the cut. Hunt himself also appears in his 'Lizzard' persona and as the lead singer of the In Crowd and next to that gem the iconic falsetto of Junior Murvin will always standout in any reggae collection.

Review: Willie Hutch was just 25 years old when he recorded his debut album, Soul Portrait. While he would go on to greater commercial success later in his career, Hutch's first stab at soul success sold relatively poorly on its initial release. Ever since, the album has been in demand with collectors, so this licensed reissue is more than welcome. Sitting somewhere between the horn-heavy soul of Stax, punchy '60s funk and the Motor City stomp of Motown, the 11 featured songs put Hutch's evocative, passionate vocals and heart-felt lyrics at the centre of the action. The result is a classic soul album that has more than stood the test of time.

Review: When they brought back Tom Cruise's macho fighter pilot for Top Gun: Maverick, they were making no bones about the nostalgia trip. The original remains an endearingly ludicrous slice of 80s action with all the brawn necessary to make it an enduring hit, and the soundtrack more than matches up to that, going nine times platinum, no less. That's a lot of success to match up to, so Maverick pulls out the big guns by tapping up Lady Gaga for the hit-making and Hans Zimmer for the epic Hollywood score. It's tonnes of fun, and it even features Kenny Loggins' classic 'Danger Zone' from the original.

Second Circle is made from studio session that started back in 2018 and makes use of a number of homemade instruments. Plenty of overdubbing techniques have been sued to achieve the richly layered sound and each piece is an intoxicating and meditative study in otherworldly electronics and earthy percussion. A gloriously unique and original listen.
