Review: Polly Jean Harvey is currently midway through an epic reissue series, delivering freshly re-mastered versions of numerous albums across a multitude of formats. The latest set to get a new vinyl pressing is 1993's "Rid of Me", which saw the celebrated singer-songwriter make her major label bow after years spent operating on small indie imprints. Widely considered one of Harvey's finest moments, the set was far more raw and aggressive than her previous work - despite using the same stripped-back line-up of musicians as its predecessor - with producer Steve Albini, famed for his work with the Pixies, conjuring a particularly "psychotic" sound (as its main protagonist has since called the album in interviews).

Much like another icon known to not take himself too seriously while also still being deadly, deadly serious - Chilly Gonzales - Sean Tillmann, AKA Har Mar Superstar, AKA Calvin Krime, AKA Sean Na Na, this is a guy who doesn't fit the typically smooth and polished aesthetics of US R&B chart toppers, is happy to be professionally photographed in his y-fronts, but makes music that can compete with the genre's finest. Review: Since the release of the singles 'I'm Alive' and 'Good Samaritan' in 2019, fans have been foaming at the mouth for confirmation of a new full-length from acclaimed Swedish garage-punk superstars The Hives. Well, since the start of this year, eccentric frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist has been spotted numerous times on the Hollywood Boulevard holding up "protest" signs with slogans such as "The Hives Must Album Now!" and "Honk If You Want a New The Hives Album". This guerilla marketing has all been for a truly righteous cause as the group have finally put listener anxiety at ease with confirmation of The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons; their sixth album and first since 2012's Lex Hives, due out in August of this year. The unhinged, bangeriffic lead cut 'Bogus Operandi' also marks their first piece of new material since those previously mentioned singles from four years ago. Dancing shoes? Check? Uniformed suit? Check. First Hives record in a decade? Inbound.

Review: Over the last 12 months, Polly Jean Harvey has delivered remastered versions of many of her most acclaimed albums, while also releasing collections of demo recordings for each set. The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

Review: You can never really understate the impact Polly Jean Harvey had when she landed on the UK music scene, and the radars of tastemakers like John Peel, in the early-1990s. Guitar tracks at the time were usually split into unashamedly lager-soaked upfront Britpop, or nihilistic and self-sabotaging grunge and metal from the US. PJ Harvey was neither, and on 'To Bring You My Love' she perfected a particularly UK take on heavy, darkroom rock.
Pressing play means stepping into a world where the blues can either be a sparse, pitch black tome ('To Bring You My Love') or stomping and sweat-soaked juggernaut ('Meet Ze Monsta'), and that's just referencing the first two songs. Compare either to the trip-hop infused downtempo melancholia of 'The Dancer', and it's pretty clear why this was one of the albums of its decade.

Review: After the success of "Helium", 2019's long-form from Montreal singer, songwriter and multi-instrumental hypnagogic pop soloist Homeshake, we are now presented with a slew of top drawer remixes from a selection of unarguably varied producers. Opening with Ciel's Daylight Savings Mix of "All Night Long", the trippy, dreamy garage effort sets the bar high. Similar broken joys can be found in the bass-R&B hybrid "Like Mariah", as re-read by Jessy Lanza, not to mention Cecile Believe's take on "Another Thing", with its extended build and eventual release into rolling, acid euphoria. More subdued and scatty, "Other Than", reworked by TAYE/PAL, might invoke the likes of DNTEL to some, while disco don Project Pablo delivers the finest dancefloor moment with a two-stepping vocal anthem-in-the-making - that re-rub of "Just Like My".

Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.
Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. And all this is before we start banging on about the musicality, from title track's subtle, hushed baritone blues to the garage rock-out of 'A Perfect Day Elise'.
