Review: For their second release, new French label Cosmocities welcome Active Ingredients aka golden era MC Stan Smith and Inkswel, the futuristic pair who blurs lines between hip hop, beats and house music. "The Middle" finds them come together in a real sweet spot, where smooth flows and lush beats sooth the soul and lyrical depth proved plenty of brain food. Broken beat maestro Kaidi Tatham also appears with a superb remix of the title track to close out a record that very much sums up the vibrant intersection between jazz, beats and hip hop that has been blowing up in 2019.

Review: Another arm of Chez Damier's multi-limbed Balance Alliance, Courtesy of Balance inaugurate a new series of 12" compilation releases with COB 3, arriving on limited edition transparent vinyl. Amir Alexander kicks things off following a crop of killer releases for Vanguard Sound and Hype LTD with "Dragon Fly!" featuring the subtly undulating bassline and fresh take on the deep house template he's known for, while City 2 City's "True People 88 89 90" comes true on the promise of its title, with a piece of vintage house that goes beyond the usual hollow revivalism. On the flip, Immer & Mr J's "Delta 23" offers a thick piece of mid-tempo house, with a piercing kick drum, offbeat dub chords and contained acid madness, while St Sene & Janeret's "Nightshifter" takes things down a notch with a late-night house track filled with swirling pads and diva vocals swelling on the midnight horizon.

Igino's vocal on the A-side track is undeniably catchy, and it sounds great both in the context of the original and simmering over Severino and Ray Mang's slow-burning gem of a remix. Review: Swiss label Idealistmusic return with another fine various artists EP: the first since 2015's edition which brought us great stuff from SCSI-9, Pablo Mateo and Idealist himself. For the label's ninth edition, they serve up some tough tribal deep house by fellow Swiss deepness purveyors Baaz of Office Recordings whose contribution "Burgundy" is emotive as ever. Thomas Wood's "Rough Road" is classic deep house informed by a healthy love of classic Chicago sounds by Larry Heard or Chris Gray. On the flip, Christoph Schindling's contribution "Most Important" is a summery and hypnotic groove awash in tape saturation and lo-fi aesthetics; its spanglish melodies working some real magic over its strict electro beat.

Review: Baaz's fledgling Office Recordings returns with its second release and a second edition of the What About Talk About series. "Owl's Theme" sees Baaz at the buttons, swiftly aligning to a vigorous bassline that provides the momentum whilst the Berliner shows his palette of classicist 909 rhythms and pumping piano chords. Complementing this, "Those Things" sounds more vibrant and colourful, with the drums less prominent amidst the magic inducing textures. On the flip Soulphiction turns in a wondrous remix of the Baaz and Iron Curtis track "K.M.S.", all glowering, emotive synth flourishes and subtle kicks, whilst "Whatabouttalkabout" showcases Baaz's talent for more esoteric sounds, eschewing the need for kicking drums to focus on a luscious electronic arrangement.

Review: Given their illustrious rise over the past twelve months, the appearance of Belfast duo Bicep on the latest Wolf Music release is quite the coup for the London label. Artist and label are of course no strangers, with a Bicep dub of Medlar appearing WOLFEP009, yet there's currently a Midas touch style momentum driving Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar that should ensure this 12" sells out even swifter than previous lupine plates. "Mixmaster 88" is an unadulterated party anthem and another ode to some of their heroes (spot the cheeky Armando usage) yet it's most memorable because it shows Bicep at their most confident. Further house music excellence is afforded with contributions from Casino Times, Medlar and newcomer Ishmael that ensure this is yet another all killer, no filler emission from the Wolf Music stable.

Review: For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint. The EP's four tracks offer a perfect blend of the former's groovy, chunky deep house sound and the sample-heavy, Chicago-inspired disco-house jams favoured by the latter. Highlights include "Black Soul", a funk-fuelled peak-time jam rich in Hamilton Bohannon style guitar loops and elastic bass guitar samples, the James Brown break-fired weightiness of "Bang the Dancefloor" and the squidgy deep house funk of "The Flame", which boasts a particularly rush-inducing breakdown.

Review: The EYA Records crew continues their trip into a new musical direction with the Lonewolf series, this time offering up a split 12" between two distinctive techno producers. Bladymore Galaxy, otherwise known as Riccardo Buccirossi, brings some effervescent synthscapes to bear on his side of the record. There's an old-skool sensibility to the production - all uptempo drums and layer upon layer of sparkling sci-fi melodics - but there's equally a welcome fresh energy and emotional honesty embedded in Buccirossi's style that makes it so joyous to listen to. Belgian producer Innershades brings a punchier style informed by electro and trance - the perfect sound to lose yourself to as the dry ice creeps around and the sun starts rising over the dancefloor.

Review: Ed Banger favourite and electro-synth-pop demi-god, Breakbot saw his "One Out Of Two" track remixed by a healthy squadron of electronic artist this year. First up it was Oliver, who painted a fascinating disco-not-disco portrait of the original. Sneak Dream went all ape shit on everyone, forming a solid and tenacious tech house groove with a thumping good kick! There's also the original of "Programe" included here, a summery pop track with subtle hints of electro; and finally, Get A Room plant a serious electro bomb, one that explodes and releases its ferocious synth on yo ass...!

Review: Australian synthesizer enthusiast, boogie revivalist and occasional house producer Inskwel dons his rarely used Cold Chillin' Inkswel alias for this outing on Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks in Hell outfit. While the Aussie producer's disco and boogie influences can be heard on Lemonade City, for the most part the EP is a house-centric affair. "Mercury Retrograde" melds a midtempo, head-nodding chugger out of backwards synth melodies and analogue sounding beats, while "Ompai" delivers his usual, soft-focus blend of vintage synths and warm, floor-friendly bottom-end. There's a chunkier feel about the heavily filtered disco bump of "Lemonade City", while "Degrees In The Shade" moves from metronomic house throbber to sparse P-funk jacker in the blink of an eye.
