Minimal House/Tech House
  1. MOOV!
  2. Keek Iz
  3. 42195 Beatz
  4. Ingi Visions - "Tekniq"
Review: The SlapFunk crew have been enjoying plenty of attention lately, and quite rightly. Their pumped up house sound is hard to refute, taking the heads down trippiness of minimal house and beefing it up with classic jacking sounds for an infectious party mixture. Samuel Deep gets the message, bringing just the right kind of swing to "MOOV!" to get bodies popping all over the joint, while "Keek Iz" rides the same beat but in a lower register. "42915 Beatz" is just as drum led, but there's a little more fidgety sonic interplay popping off around the drums. Ingi Visions pops up on the B2 for the distinctly more eerie "Tekniq", placing an icy string synth refrain at the heart of the track with chilling results.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. It Was A Good Day (4:25)
  2. You Can Do It (feat Mack 10 & Ms Toi) (4:24)
Review: The first missive from the reissue-focused Throwdown imprint takes a deep dive into the bulging back catalogue of West Coast hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Side A offers us another chance to own 1992 hit "It Was A Good Day" a languid, sun-kissed Golden Era jam crafted from elements of a familiar slab of laidback jazz-funk. Over on side B you'll find 1999's "You Can Do It", another once high-profile single featuring additional verses and vocal contributions from Mack 10 and Ms Toi. For those who've forgotten it, the track is a punchier and heavy club cut that utilizes all three rappers' distinctive flows to ratchet up the intensity throughout.

Review: The second vinyl sampler to accompany BBE's hook-up with disco legend John Morales is just as delicious as the first, with essential takes on classics from Teddy Pendergrass, Candi Staton, Loletta Holloway and Inner Life all worth investigating. If this isn't enough for you, be sure to check the comprehensive 18 track double CD compilation, also out this week.

  1. Footsteps In The Dark (Parts 1 & 2) (5:04)
  2. Between The Sheets (4:53)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Immortalised, slowed down funk from The Isley Brothers, an American R&B/soul group from Cincinnati, Ohio, established in the early 1950s. This 7" houses the much loved and often sampled in the hip hop world, "Footsteps In The Dark" (Parts 1 & 2) and "Between The Sheets". The latter is a silky smooth R&B classic whilst the arguably more well-known "Footsteps In The Dark" is an arrestingly beautiful, hood classic/soul masterpiece. The bassy but laid-back harmonious ballad with delicious percussion and Ronald Isley crooning an uneasy lyric on maintaining "a love that lasted for so long" amid the constant temptation of infidelity, makes it worth the entry price on its own.

  2. You Could Do Your Memories
  3. Wobble
Review: German house abstractionist Isolee makes a welcome return, surfacing on Pampa with his first new material since dropping his album Well Spent Youth on Koze's label back in 2011. Creative batteries recharged, Isolee is in familiar form on the three track Allowance 12"; the title track adopts his trademark bare bone approach with soothing lines of melodic intoxicants gently pulsing with intent over the soft edged house groove. This hypnotic opener hogs the A Side, leaving the chiming minimalist rhythmics of "You Could Do Your Memories" to duel for your attentions with the far too playful "Wobble".

  1. I Love You (3:02)
  2. What's Going On (4:37)
Review: One of America's undisputed kings of soul and songwriting Master Weldon gets an AOTN celebration of the highest order as his 1976 classic "I Love You" (written with and featuring Don Blackman) gets a welcome revisit. An ultimately dreamy number, file it alongside Faze O's "Riding High" for the quintessential end-of-night smooch sound. If that's not quite enough, the B is a delicate-yet-rich instrumental cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Stunning. There's really nothing not to like about this.

  4. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - KZR Blazed instrumental) (6:57)
Review: Having recently devoted more time to re-edits and compilation work, the DJ/producer known as Volcov re-launches his jazzy and soulful Isoul8 project. The producer's first single under the pseudonym for five years is little less than superb. The EP opens with the KZR Blazed Dub, a wonderfully deep and soulful treat where Paul Randolph's evocative vocal comes smothered in elongated, deep space chords and undulating jazz-house drums. The Delvyn Groove version, rich in jammed-out Fender Rhodes riffs and rubbery live bass, sounds a little like vintage Georg Levin cuts on Sonar Kollektiv, while "Speak Your Word", featuring the combined talents of Osunlade and Rasiyah, brilliantly joins the dots between jazz-funk, deep house and 2000 Black style broken beat.

Deep House
  1. Track 1 (7:24)
  2. Track 2 (6:49)
Review: Italojohnson has clearly decided that less is more, having limited their output to one self-released 12" a year since 2013. Volume 10 in the mysterious threesome's self-titled series predictably contains more twisted, tried-and-tested material. The untitled A-side sounds like a modern update of a breakbeat-boasting Frankie Bones classic, with hectic bursts of percussion, surging sub and a classic riff taking it in turns to impress. There's more of an acid house feel to the similarly untitled flipside workout, with booming, mangled vocal snippets and sharp electronic stabs riding a thunderous groove, '80s electro hits and a classic Chicago bassline. There's little subtle about either track, but they sound like guaranteed floorfillers.

Review: A seminal slab of tribal house in its truest form, massive at nights like Body & Soul and consistently drawn for ever since; Joe Claussell's rare remix of his own group Instant House's 92 cult cut "Awade" gets a limited treatment on the Jungle Sounds reissue series. Still just as humid, sexy and bewildering with its rattling percussion, powerful vocal textures and rolling bassline, all laced together with Joe's perennial spiritual signature, this still sounds incredible 27 years down the line. And it comes complete with the previously unreleased "Drum Box Demo" and a selection creative mix tools. An incredible 45, grab it while you can.

Review: The Not An Animal crew follows up excellent releases from Man Power, James Hadfield and Ian Blevins last year with this 12" of soaring 80s-inflected dancefloor boogie In:State & Giuli. It's actually a dreamy remix of "Vizitoz" from Lauer that opens up the 12" before the pulsing, wavey throb of the original kicks in. "Plus One" on the B side chops up the beat a little, but the same fulsome synth lines shape out the track. That leaves it to Lizards to wrap the record up with their own version of "Vizitoz", bringing a motorik thrum to the track that should nudge it into the bags of all manner of DJs from the cosmic warm-up crew to the EBM-favouring techno peak timers.

Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

Review: Iron Blu, UK producer and broadcaster on the mighty Intergalactic FM, has releases on Biotech, Rothmans, Plastic Fantastic, Out Of Bounds, Endless Illusion, Vivod and pending on new imprint LBL. His production career has spanned krautrock/cosmic, post-punk, electrofunk to what he does today. In past lives he has released on Blubber Lips, Some Bizzare, Hardware, Full Circle, HOS, Quad Communications, Coded, Global Underground and Morgan Khan's Streetsounds. Flight Recorder has been releasing a steady stream of 12" EPs and one CD album since Feb 2012 from Cottam, Kid Machine, Casionova to Antoni Maiovvi, Perseus Traxx, Alessandro Parisi and Emile Strunz amongst others.
Stepping aside from managing and A&R for Flight Recorder, Iron Blu releases his second offering for the label. "Science Probe Vessel" is 12 inches of jackbeat and Detroit techno. A1 is a dub-tinged organ driven 909 jack. A2 is a bass-heavy 909 jack cut through with glacial strings. B1 is heavy Detroit techno. B2 is a deep groovin' house workout fused with wobbly seesawing strings.

Review: Perpetual Rhythms is already well-regarded as a bastion of quality amongst contemporary Chicago house labels, and now they've downright sealed the deal with this mammoth compilation from a stellar cast of local cats. There's too many to all list in detail here, so focusing on the highlights, Dcee leads things in with the tumbling cosmic jazz leanings of "Suavecito," Hakim Murphy teases with a spacious and daring exploration in the liminal zone between ambient and house, and Obsolete Music Technology gets invigorating with the bouncy "High Top Fade." Those tracks alone are enough to deserve your hard earned, but there's reams of other excellent forward-facing Windy City jams to sink your teeth into.

Review: Ikeaboy is the intermittent project from Damian Tubbritt, who first debuted the moniker more than ten years ago. It's been a long while since any fresh material from this deep cover curio of oddball techno hit wax, but now Wicked Bass have done the honourable thing and gathered up this excellent trio of tracks. "Shape Memory" plies a funky line in squelchy bass and jangling delay trills, while "Living In The Future" opts for a more mysterious, pad soaked trip into spooked out electro. On the B-side "Dayna" sports some forthright drum machine beats and epic sweeps of synths that only serve to confound any expectations you might have about the sound of Ikeaboy.

He's a regular on Bliq, and steps up under his own name with seriously on-point club tackle for those who like their hybrid sounds. "Singers" straps some breakbeat choppage to a mellow deep techno stomp, while "Evil Flower" unfurls in a fit of edgy electro before "Adidas People" cools things down with a focused trip into straight up psych-out techno. "Hackney Tower" finishes the EP off on a wonderfully creepy tip, all skin-crawling acidic gurgles and unsettling voices to inspire paranoid glances in the club.

  4. Spherical (7:15)
Review: Romanian producer Iuly.B has been turning out his wares on all the right labels, from Visionquest and Claque Musique to Memoria and Fuse London, and now he's been tapped up by Burnski's Constant Sound label to unfurl a vision of minimal house in 2018. At this stage the influence of early deep techno is as powerful as any kind of modern stripped down house sound, and that comes through in abundance on the shimmering, ambient-tinged "Spaceport". "Dynamics" maintains the celestial trajectory of the record, but with a more looped up, bleep-led approach, while "Meditate" draws upon some of the more familiar tropes of minimal house. "Spherical" finishes the EP off with another set of ethereal pad tones and a crisp, snaking beat for adventurous dancefloor trippers.

Straight from 1980, there's a great balance of classic soul motifs and modern production as "Reality" swoons and sways unhurriedly but emphatically while "Hey Hey" ups the boogie ante with firm focus on the party, sharp switches on the chorus and some insane bass runs. Review: Fans of mechanical techno-not-techno sounds will be all over Minimal Wave's latest transmission from 80s French underground heroes In Aeternam Vale. Having reissued several essential lost works from the outfit last year, most notably the proto-Sandwell sound of "Highway Dark Veins", Veronica Vasicka delivers another two tracks from the vault. Stylistically mirroring that previous two track release the title track is an equally brilliant synth-techno beast which could easily pass for a Function track today, while B-side "Calling Somewhere" sounds like a cold wave version of proto-halfstep. Needless to say, the fact that these tracks are 22 years old literally left us speechless.

Review: Ah, a real gem of the NYC No Wave era is the focus of Dark Entries attentions here as the stunning Holland Tunnel Dive by ImpLOG is given a more than timely reissue. For the uninitiated out there, ImpLOG were formed by The Contortions band members Don Christensen and Jody Harris under the name ImpLOG, after the former left the iconic No Wave act in 1979, and released just the two records together. The story goes that Christensen's recorded experiments with found sounds, and an array of instruments such as a Univox drum machine and Casio keyboards impressed Lust/Unlust Records founder Charles Ball sufficiently enough to issue two tracks from the submitted demo tape as the Holland Tunnel Dive 12? in 1980. It's remained a highly prized record ever since and this lovingly recreated edition from Dark Entries is a must!

Review: Following an excellent EP from Memphis, Animals On Psychedelics returns with more weird and wonderful party fare from the outer reaches. This time it's a various artists release that brings together all the producers involved in the label so far, while also introducing BPMF to the fold with the woozy, rubbery synth shapes of "Liza On Clouds." Jane Fitz and Dom Ahtuam's Invisible Menders project presents the rolling, psyched out melodics of "Three On Three," while Memphis pushes further into experimental territory with the wonderfully fractured "Altered States." That leaves it to Miro SundayMusiq to complete the EP with the wave-meets-Italo tones of "From Behind The Corner," a perfectly noirish flourish to finish a sterling record.

There's naturally plenty of playable material to be found on this fourth Instinct EP. First turn your attention to A-side "Renaissance", where slowly rising, progressive house style orchestration and dreamy deep house pads cluster around punchy two-step beats and starburst electronics. Turn to the flipside and you'll find the swinging but driving tech-house chunkiness of "Universal", as well as the sub-heavy trip that is two-step tech-house cut "Phantom". Each of the tracks features the breathy, stylish vocals of Madrid-based Belarusian, Anneq. Her sleazy, whispered refrain is the headline attraction on the throbbing, industrial pop-meets-techno hustle of "Je Ai Dissous", while she also chats seductively over the undulating arpeggio lines, restless drums and dystopian atmospheres of "Tendencia (About Blank Version"). The ambient-leaning "V6" take of that cut is also hugely inspiring, while the Page R version of "Je Ai Dissous" is a dark, atmospheric and intoxicating celebration of legendary '80s "computer musical instrument", the Fairlight CMI.

Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.

Deep House
  1. Tangerines (7:26)
  2. Tungsten (5:33)
Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Infinity
  2. Infinity (Todd Edwards remix)
  3. House Of Infinity
Review: Those with a cursory grasp of recent shifts in niche dance music will be fully aware of Luca C and Ali Love, the duo behind Infinity Ink. The former was once an integral part of Cazals whilst the latter has dabbled in all manner of East London scenes over the years. Arising on Crosstown Rebels as Infinity Ink is undoubtedly their most high profile release and they come sporting a new genre in cosmic garage, which sort of sounds like Art Department doing hip house on the basis of "Infinity". Label head Lazarus pulls out a top drawer (and quite appropriate) remixer in the shape of Todd The God Edwards, who drops a signature revision filled with stacatto swinging rhythms and vocal tweaks.

  9. Ivan Lopez - "Mentalspace"
Review: Steadily building up a prominent identity in the bustling minimal house and techno thoroughfare, The Untold Stories return with one of their signature various artist compilations to present some lesser known practitioners of the hypnotic groove. Jerome C gets a rugged angle on the swing to his beats on "An Intelligible Scrawl", while Volta Cab nods to a classic Tobias jam with "Street Knowledge". MD Wallholz's "Ein Bisschen Ruhe" is a shivering slice of experimental electro, and Jonas Sella brings an unhinged French flavour to proceedings, but truthfully every jam on this solidly packed release has its own distinct character that fits into the meandering tale the label is unfurling.

  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Review: Almost a quarter century into his recording career, Mousse T has not lost his ability to create party-starting anthems, even if he's consciously moved away from the heavily compressed, filter-happy disco-house sound of old. "Rock The Mic" - his first release for Defected's revivalist disco offshoot Glitterbox - sounds like an anthem in the making; a cheery disco beast built around live-sounding drums, simmering strings and Plantlife style, P-funk-inspired hip-house vocals. The accompanying remixes come from dusty-fingered crate digger turned disco don Kon. As well as a warm "Remix" rich in warm electric piano riffs and authentic disco instrumentation, the Brooklyn producer also serves up a fine Instrumental take and a handy Acapella.

  1. Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit) (3:43)
  2. I Love You Viata Mea (Lema) (4:40)
Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

Review: Spanish electronic music sculptor IMP comes through with his second release to date, and it's on the Titan's Halo label, an imprint reserved strictly for the moodiest of electronica experimentations. "Rain Over Orion" would be the perfect companion to an 80's Manga flick, where distant melodic sequences flutter among watery atmospherics and meditative pads; the remix jobs come from Boris Divider, who chucks in a half-time beat and a flurry of machine-like noises, and Brain Machine who delivers the techno makeover in fine style.

  1. Bruhaha Babelico - "Bruhaha II" (10:10)
  2. Individual Industry - "Eyes" (3:54)
Review: Music From Memory's first retrospective of obscure Brazilian electronic music, "Outro Tempo", was arguably one of the strongest compilations of 2017. There's a second volume on the way, with curator John Gomez this time focusing on music made between 1984 and '96. First, though, we get this taster EP featuring two previously cassette-only cuts. On the A-side you'll find Bruhaha Babelico's "Bruhaha II", a ghostly and mind-altering chunk of delay-laden new wave/industrial funk fusion full of fuzzy bass, echoing female vocals, dubbed-out electronics and psychedelic yelps. Turn to the flip and you're greeted by Individual Industry's off-kilter, outer-space synth-pop jam "Eyes". Like its predecessor, it's an unusual, intoxicating treat.

Review: Following their surprise reunion and Strut-release album We Be All Africans last year, Idris and The Pyramids return... This time on Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon imprint. Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

  4. Obscene (6:48)
Review: After a short break Sheffield based Moment Cinetique return in 2019 with their first vinyl release, with an EP from fast-rising Icelandic producer Intr0beatz including a remix from London's House prodigy Cody Currie. Intr0beatz experienced a quick rise to the forefront of House music through 2018 with releases on labels including fellow Icelandic natives Lagaffe Tales gaining support from DJs such as XXXY, Black Loops, Carlo and more. The Kusk EP displays his trademark sound of deep grooves punctuated by disco highlights and rich synths, with all three three original tracks combining lush pads, intricate keys, energetic grooves and analogue synth work to create an infectious, high-quality release. Cody Currie also enjoyed a huge 2018 with releases on Classic, Southern Fried and many more. Cody uses the loop and groove bass of Intr0's 'Mandolinio' then adds jazz keys and stabs to twist the track into his own unique style.
