  4. The Living Daylights (TJF bonus) (4:25)
Review: Leicestershire band In Embrace had a brief but productive run through the 80s that yielded a grip of albums and EPs, but Emotional Rescue have decided to focus on one track on particular. "The Living Daylights" originally came out in 1983, and here we get treated to two alternative mixes from a band who didn't take the transition from live band to studio project lightly. This is angular new wave with dubby undertones at its best. Timothy J Fairplay also steps up on the B side to deliver two choice remixes that vary the intensity from brooding disco dub to lysergic tripper without altering the groove.

Soul
  1. I Love You (3:02)
  2. What's Going On (4:37)
Review: One of America's undisputed kings of soul and songwriting Master Weldon gets an AOTN celebration of the highest order as his 1976 classic "I Love You" (written with and featuring Don Blackman) gets a welcome revisit. An ultimately dreamy number, file it alongside Faze O's "Riding High" for the quintessential end-of-night smooch sound. If that's not quite enough, the B is a delicate-yet-rich instrumental cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Stunning. There's really nothing not to like about this.

  1. Reality (3:36)
  2. Hey Hey (3:19)
Review: Previously spotted passing hands for over 5000 quid, this one-off 45" from North Carolina troupe Ice has enjoyed cult status over the years in both the deepfunk and northern soul scenes. Straight from 1980, there's a great balance of classic soul motifs and modern production as "Reality" swoons and sways unhurriedly but emphatically while "Hey Hey" ups the boogie ante with firm focus on the party, sharp switches on the chorus and some insane bass runs. Another ice cold reissue from AOTN.

  1. Queen Of My Universe (3:15)
  2. Up (3:59)
Review: The first of two major Infinity licences from AOTN this month, this is a significant excavation even by renowned digger label founder Fryer's standards. Usually seen passing hands for well over 500 quid, this second and last single from the relatively unknown troupe Infinity is a stone cold jam that's been sought after for many many years. Absolute rare groove sleaze on the bass and horns, "Queen Of My Universe" sparkles with soul in every element. Meanwhile "Up" strips things back even further with an uptempo disco twang and tight Q&A vocal play between the band. Infinite love for this one!

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. The One (5:56)
  2. Shout (5:44)
Review: Illyus & Barrientos are the rising Scottish tech-house duo that are staples of top labels DFTD and Glasgow Underground, and who had a breakthrough year in 2018. They kick start this year with a future anthem on the label they now call home: Toolroom. There is a couple of worthy new bangers here: from the exhilarating funky house explosion of "The One" and its infectious disco loops, to the fierce tech-house stomp of "Shout" named after the pitched-up diva vocals throughout - that will no doubt whip the crowd into a frenzy. This in combination with a tough rolling, bass-driven groove that is aimed squarely at peak time dancefloors in the main room and it's a hit prediction right here! Expect to be hearing it a lot in 2019 for sure.

  1. Holland Tunnel Dive
  2. On B'Way
Review: Ah, a real gem of the NYC No Wave era is the focus of Dark Entries attentions here as the stunning Holland Tunnel Dive by ImpLOG is given a more than timely reissue. For the uninitiated out there, ImpLOG were formed by The Contortions band members Don Christensen and Jody Harris under the name ImpLOG, after the former left the iconic No Wave act in 1979, and released just the two records together. The story goes that Christensen's recorded experiments with found sounds, and an array of instruments such as a Univox drum machine and Casio keyboards impressed Lust/Unlust Records founder Charles Ball sufficiently enough to issue two tracks from the submitted demo tape as the Holland Tunnel Dive 12? in 1980. It's remained a highly prized record ever since and this lovingly recreated edition from Dark Entries is a must!

Review: San Francisco trio INHALT burst onto the scene back at the turn of the decade, going on to release a trio of well-regarded EPs on [Emotional] Especial and Dark Entries. Here they return to the latter label with their first 12" for almost four years. As usual, their music is stylish, dark and clandestine, with wild-eyed German vocals riding brooding, John Carpenter-influenced arpeggio lines, creepy chords and bustling drum machine grooves. Our pick of the bunch is probably the up-tempo, triple time hustle of "Commerce", though the more polished and atmospheric opener "Alles" and EBM-minded bubbler "Schwarz" are also mighty fine.

Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

  1. Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
  2. Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

Review: German house abstractionist Isolee makes a welcome return, surfacing on Pampa with his first new material since dropping his album Well Spent Youth on Koze's label back in 2011. Creative batteries recharged, Isolee is in familiar form on the three track Allowance 12"; the title track adopts his trademark bare bone approach with soothing lines of melodic intoxicants gently pulsing with intent over the soft edged house groove. This hypnotic opener hogs the A Side, leaving the chiming minimalist rhythmics of "You Could Do Your Memories" to duel for your attentions with the far too playful "Wobble".

First spotted on the second edition of the series, it's now full length with the golden touch of Amp Fiddler. Review: Almost a quarter century into his recording career, Mousse T has not lost his ability to create party-starting anthems, even if he's consciously moved away from the heavily compressed, filter-happy disco-house sound of old. "Rock The Mic" - his first release for Defected's revivalist disco offshoot Glitterbox - sounds like an anthem in the making; a cheery disco beast built around live-sounding drums, simmering strings and Plantlife style, P-funk-inspired hip-house vocals. The accompanying remixes come from dusty-fingered crate digger turned disco don Kon. As well as a warm "Remix" rich in warm electric piano riffs and authentic disco instrumentation, the Brooklyn producer also serves up a fine Instrumental take and a handy Acapella.

Review: Ed Banger favourite and electro-synth-pop demi-god, Breakbot saw his "One Out Of Two" track remixed by a healthy squadron of electronic artist this year. First up it was Oliver, who painted a fascinating disco-not-disco portrait of the original. Sneak Dream went all ape shit on everyone, forming a solid and tenacious tech house groove with a thumping good kick! There's also the original of "Programe" included here, a summery pop track with subtle hints of electro; and finally, Get A Room plant a serious electro bomb, one that explodes and releases its ferocious synth on yo ass...!

  3. See Where You Are (7:16)
Review: Frankfurt institution Cocoon throws us a curveball in the form of this minimal pop ditty by local legend Markus Nikolai, one of the great minds behind the legendary Perlon imprint who is joined by Ole Schulte as International Anything. They return with their sophomore effort, following up their debut on Perlon earlier this year with another boompty lo-slung effort in the form of "Running In the Underwood" featuring some super catchy vocals. On the remix is one of Kompakt's main men, the inimitable Michael Mayer, who provides a stellar rework which goes for a frantic and adrenalised electro style. Second original offering "See Where You Are" similarly goes down a (proto) electro route in the vein of legends Kraftwerk for this robotic slice of heaven.

Review: Repress time: released last year on a limited run of 45s, Chet Ivey's double-A "Dose Of Soul" / "Get Down With Greater" returns to the relief of collectors and funk lovers who missed out. Two of many swelteringly funky gems on his Sylvia Funk Recordings album curated in 2017, "Dose Of Soul" has a raw edge and looseness that's held together with Ayers-style vibraphone chords, while "Get Down With Greater" is much more of a traditional funk jam, with the organ player and bassist playing at their fullest of flavours and Ivey leading in his inimitable 'poisonous' style. Don't sleep!

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.

Review: Music From Memory's first retrospective of obscure Brazilian electronic music, "Outro Tempo", was arguably one of the strongest compilations of 2017. There's a second volume on the way, with curator John Gomez this time focusing on music made between 1984 and '96. First, though, we get this taster EP featuring two previously cassette-only cuts. On the A-side you'll find Bruhaha Babelico's "Bruhaha II", a ghostly and mind-altering chunk of delay-laden new wave/industrial funk fusion full of fuzzy bass, echoing female vocals, dubbed-out electronics and psychedelic yelps. Turn to the flip and you're greeted by Individual Industry's off-kilter, outer-space synth-pop jam "Eyes". Like its predecessor, it's an unusual, intoxicating treat.

The former was once an integral part of Cazals whilst the latter has dabbled in all manner of East London scenes over the years. Arising on Crosstown Rebels as Infinity Ink is undoubtedly their most high profile release and they come sporting a new genre in cosmic garage, which sort of sounds like Art Department doing hip house on the basis of "Infinity". Label head Lazarus pulls out a top drawer (and quite appropriate) remixer in the shape of Todd The God Edwards, who drops a signature revision filled with stacatto swinging rhythms and vocal tweaks.

Review: Coming off the back of two albums for Japan's Mule Musiq, Petre Inspirescu drops a new single for the imprint, taking his iconic brand of dancefloor minimalism to a wider, perhaps less tech-savvy audience. That's not to say that Mule isn't a home to some of the most exciting electronic beats around, but Inspirescu's style takes the catalogue onto a much darker path. "Murgulll" is headstrong and groove-heavy, coming through with an interlocked cocktail of sounds that mould to create an endless atmosphere of euphoric doom; "Cumva" is the dubbier of the two, launching a deep-minded bass missile that morphs into something more improvisational and more akin to the previous material that has graced this sublime label.

While it shares its title with the name of a famed pasty manufacturer, there's nothing stodgy or calorific about the tasty material on offer. "Ginster" itself is hypnotic, wonky and stripped back, with delay-laden riffs and electronic pulses that recall some of the producer's most glorious moments (EG "Beau Mot Plage" for starters). Over on the flip, "Sudden Frost" sees him make merry with blissful sampled guitar passages, deep house style beats and evocative chords, while "Leap-Second" is altogether weirder, with odd noises riding a beat that's somewhere between glam-rock and the wonky world of Ricardo Villalobos.

With the release of "A Fine Mess" there's seems to be a new influx of energy dedicated to their 2019 world tour, laced with the group's unique tonic of melancholia, of course. This is undeniably heard on opener "Fine Mess", and at five tracks long it's something of a mini album. Recorded during their time spent in upstate New York with acclaimed producer Dave Fridmann (think Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips and Mogwai), the resulting collection of tracks delivers something of a fiery compliment to the deep and visceral energy heard on their sixth studio album "Marauder". Long live Interpol.

  2. Just An Illusion (John Morales M + M main mix edit)
  3. Flashback (Kon remix)
  4. In & Out Of Love (Errol Kennedy & Yam Who? mix)
Review: ISM's decision to commission a follow-up to Imagination's legendary 1983 remix set, Night Dubbing, was met in some quarters with a mixture of surprise and skepticism. In fact, the resultant album is something of a triumph, with a range of well-regarded modern disco and boogie producers delivering some superbly sympathetic remixes. Here, four of the strongest highlights from the album - including john Morales' epic re-rub of "Just An Illusion" (here in edited form) and Kon's wonderfully positive, musically rich reinterpretation of "Flashback" - are released on vinyl for the first time. While all good, its Late Night Tuff Guy's loopy, Tiger & Woods inspired rework of "Changes" that really stands out.

Review: Mutual Dreaming, the second album from Innergaze, casts its members Aurora Halal and Jason Letkiewicz as stateside contemporary versions of our own Chris & Cosey. The ideas shown in Innergaze's recording career to date seem more fully formed across the eight tracks on this album courtesy of Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. Mutual Dreaming is undeniably more coherent than the sugary hypno-disco of the duo's 100% Silk drop last year. It's possible to say Halal and Letkiewicz have gleaned more than titular influence from the Mutual Dreaming club night they run in Brooklyn, the various guests that have joined them freeing up their minds musically and allowing them to explore ideas new. There's a saturation of sound throughout that is as vivid as Halal's video work and from the opening, almost brutal synth and drum machine manipulation of the title track you can hear fully the fingers of Letkiewicz.

  2. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - Delvyn Groove mix) (6:57)
  3. Speak Your Word (feat Osunlade & Rasiyah) (5:58)
  4. On My Heart (feat Paul Randolph - KZR Blazed instrumental) (6:57)
Review: Having recently devoted more time to re-edits and compilation work, the DJ/producer known as Volcov re-launches his jazzy and soulful Isoul8 project. The producer's first single under the pseudonym for five years is little less than superb. The EP opens with the KZR Blazed Dub, a wonderfully deep and soulful treat where Paul Randolph's evocative vocal comes smothered in elongated, deep space chords and undulating jazz-house drums. The Delvyn Groove version, rich in jammed-out Fender Rhodes riffs and rubbery live bass, sounds a little like vintage Georg Levin cuts on Sonar Kollektiv, while "Speak Your Word", featuring the combined talents of Osunlade and Rasiyah, brilliantly joins the dots between jazz-funk, deep house and 2000 Black style broken beat.
